  • Look, it's probably boring. You've been warned. I got a factory refurbished CD changer (Onkyo DX-C390) and open it up, blathering on as I usually do.
If you you are looking for a small company with great vacuum knowledge: www.ecovacuum.... They have fantastic customer service. They are NOT sponsoring me.
Opening and closing music: "Me and my Shadow" by Jolson, Dreyer, and Rose Played by "The Columbians." Columbia Viva-tonal 78 rpm record played on a "Premier" acoustic phonograph.

I have two of these. One purchased new and one I recently found at Goodwill for $5.00, which was in excellent working and cosmetic condition. Fantastic CD player with great sound.

These things are built like a tank. I’ve had one of these for almost 20 years. Yes they’ve made the same exact model that long. That says something. Why mess with perfection? Sounds excellent. I will definitely buy another while I still can just to have a spare.

I was looking for a multi disc cd player that also had digital out (ideally coax, as my only optical in is used). I came across this used with the anticipation of using it with my Marantz NR1602. Honestly, the built in DAC is good and I'm not sure I hear a difference between the built in DAC and the Marantz, allowing me to leave the Marantz powered off. Both 24-bit 192khz.

I just got one open box at Best Buy for $120 with a 4 year geek squad warranty. I love the sound through my Yamaha A-S801 so much I bought another open box unit from Best Buy for $150 this time also with the 4 year warranty. This thing has a really nice DAC with a direct digital path and 128x sampling rate. It gets really good sound.

Nabbed the “good” condition open box for only $105 - and it’s in mint condition minus a single minuscule knick. The four year warranty is a no brainer!

@@nerdloftgaming Yeah the first one I got was good condition and you could tell it had been tried out but it is mint. The excellent condition one was $125 and it hadn’t even been used once. I’m loving these things getting good sound out of a 6 disc changer.

@@bigmacfullerton7870 I have a small collection of CDs (just a little over two hundred) and only recently have I started looking into enjoying that collection with a proper sound system. I checked out your Yahama amp and it’s a pretty penny.
Any recommendations for someone on a budget who can get the most out of this particular CD player?

Boring, long winded comment: CD rotary changers are prone to fail sooner than single CD transport systems due to the moving parts involved with the sliding tray. Some are fixable if you're good at DYI electronics repair, and have the patience and time to take it apart. Just something to consider to get the convenience of being able to listen to 6 CDs without going near the machine. I would stay away from the 100-300 disc changers, they typically have even shorter shelf lives. I purchased three used rotary 5-disc changers recently, (two Sonys and a Panasonic). All 3 were broken, even though they were listed as tested and working. I wouldn't recommend buying a used one, they're typically on their last leg or don't survive shipping if not extremely well packed. This refurbished unit direct from Onkyo looks like a good option. I notice that this one is slower processing than others in random mode. The important thing is to not set anything on top of this unit, as it would put pressure on top of an already relatively fragile build. Having said that I want one. Debating on purchasing this with included 2-year Allstate warranty from Onkyo for $200 vs. what's listed as a new one, (not from Onkyo but an Onkyo authorized dealer) for $212 without the Allstate warranty, because the chances of them failing within 2 years are low. I'm leaning towards the new, because then I'm reasonably sure that it's starts out fresh with me, and I don't have to wonder what it's been through before it gets into my care.

I rip my CD's to flac files and put them on my phone/digital audio player. There's still something about the native cd though that just sounds right.

In 2015, I was looking to replace my Technics disc changer from the early 1990s (tray kept sticking). Put it off. Now, post-COVID, good luck finding a new one! But another UA-cam channel says my Technics is bulletproof, so I may deal with the sticky tray and use Blu-ray/DVD players instead if it ever dies.

That was nice. I learned a couple things and had a short nap, too. I hit your subscribe button just to be nice. I like this unit but I'd really like to find a company-refurbed DVD changer because they can do double duty and I'm told get more out of a CD with more sampling, I guess. Any thoughts there? Thanks.

I found this video because I bought one of these used on eBay for $30 but it did not work when it arrived. It does not see the disk when I put it in. I opened it up and cleaned the laser but that didn't help. I was thinking about buying a replacement laser. I'm torn because this is worth so much more than I paid if I can get it working and I want a CD player for my system. Anyway, nice job on the video!

Mine sounds great when it CAN play a CD. It is very inconsistent in which CDs will load and play properly. Discs that are fine one time will skip or not load another time. I am constantly rebooting and/or unplugging the player. Have any solutions been offered to fix this issue? I see people complaining about it all over the internet.

    • @mikec9112

The issue with mine was the four suspension springs for the laser mech. They were causing it to sit too low and the top disc clamp was scraping causing skipping. I have spare springs from parted out players that I used. Open yours up and listen for the clamp scraping. If it is you can try stretching the springs out making them longer. The front two springs are black and stiffer.
