What native African languages are you able to speak?
Unfortunately none, but I can understand a bit of Amharic and Arabic (if that counts)
None
I speak Riffian(Berber).
Ewe and Twi
English.
Liberia was colonized by Americans. There is a difficult history of gross mistreatment of the original inhabitants and the American colonists denying them rights and citizenship on their own homeland for much of its colonial history.
yeah westerners think that just because the colonists were black that it didn't count.
It was, to be precise, purchased by your American Government with the view to repatriate the freed slaves... #OurHistory
I didn't expect this episode to be so Togo-centric. Don't get me wrong, it was great and I think it should be a start of a series on African countries and other multi-cultural states! I just didn't expect it based on the title
Many native langueges are present in africa and are very widely spoken. These foreign languages are used in official terms around the capital cities and other popular cities. Whenever you hear % of this nation are illitirate it means that % of ppl in this nation don't speak or write in the official language of the nation which is most of the time a foreign language
More often the ones who cannot read or write very well in at least one language. But yeah some countries count only official language reading or writing skills, which is easier to test
Language is not the word we understand it to be when we refer to the African continent, tribal chatter and the sheer quantity of recognised languages is incomprehensible and I think the idea to standardise remains a valid goal.
Thats a really good point about perceived/statistical literacy, thanks for sharing!
I would love to see that as the start of a new series. I know Togo was only meant as an example, but it would be cool to see the rest covered, too.
Yes, I'd love to see more about the often mysterious land of 🇹🇬
I am South African and Sesotho is my home language . In SA we have 11 official languages , 9 of them are native African languages which are Sesotho, venda, sepedi , xhosa, tsonga, tswana, zulu, ndebele and swati.
All 11 official languages are equal. Any of these languages can be used anywhere even in parliament. At home and in public native languages are dominating and english dominates in advertising.
That’s so cool! I have a question about the Xhosa language: why do you click your tongue in some of your sounds? ☺️ just wondering
@@Benni777 They adopted it from the Khoisan people
@Thato How many questions now..Are most people conversant in all 11 languages? Are they related languages? Is it necessary to speak many to work in public service? I have lived in bilingual places but can't imagine 11! Peace & Love
@@lauratictoc for most jobs here in SA you need at least 2 official languages, and the more you speak the better. Some of the languages have things in common, but they're each their own independent languages with their own rules 😊 SAs really diverse
Yes indeed and take India for example, they have 30+ recognised languages and that's not including dialects and tribal chatter. Best wishes 🙏
You've been branching out from just etymology in some videos lately. I for one am all in for these experiments
I like the way how there is a country called Republic of South Africa, another one called Central African Reublic but there is no North African Republic or Republic of North Africa.
It's easy and just lazy why bother thinking up a name or paying someone to think one up instead just slap the geographical name and the type of government on the official papers, the north part of the continent have all picked their ancient names or the names the colonial government's picked out.
Am north african we cant exaclty call ourselves that way unless we unite
there's plans to join multiple countries together into a country called the east African federation
Yet.
@@RealUlrichLeland that's going no where of all of those countries only 2 really like eachother while most of them will be forced to depend on 1 of the most eastern country's.
Like the mountains in Togo, the lack of many natural harbors inhibited the slave trade and slowed colonization in parts of Africa. This was the case in Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
Fun fact: Rwanda, Burundi and Madagascar are the only countries in Africa where an indigenous language is spoken by the entirety of the population
Laughs in Tanzanian
@@Msambweni you and me laughing in Tanzanian
*One* indigenous language
Awesome! Very interesting history. Thanks!
Really good, if simple, history lesson. Love it!
I really like this episode, I hope you do more videos about the different languages that are spoken in different parts of the world.
XhosKa, Benign? Hehe I love when you do these little pronunciation mishaps. Sometimes I think it's on purpose 🙂
Your pronunciation is horrendous for my Kenyan ears but it's a beautiful video. Never thought of it that way.
I once met a guy from (Northern) Togo who spoke 15 languages haha
I agree with other comments that the video title is a bit deceptive because this was obviously primarily about this single, tiny country in western Africa, but still very informative, as always. 😕 Just strange that u made this title choice unless u had planned this being one in a series.
Fun fact: most European or Asian countries were also colonised at least once in their long history
Yes colonisation gives cultural and ethnical unity on territories making them stronger
Not so fun fact really. I always get sad thinking about what some of the European cultures could have been if they weren't all bulldozed over by Christianity.
Funny how you called Benin... Benign
On the same day Geography Now released the Tanzania episode. Coincidence?
The title of video is misleading I thought you would mention the african languages that is resilience but more than 90% was in Togo. I think you should make your video title more obvious.
This looked like a really interesting video, but I couldn't hear it properly as there was background music playing the whole time you were talking, so I gave up half way through.
Ethiopia was not colonised because i'ts capital was inland unlike the somali and afar empired around it that were coastal. That gave ethiopia a chance to regroup and take down the colonisers while others were taken by surprise. Ethiopa also benefited from colonisation as it expanded it's empire and since colonisers were not aware of any other sovereign land other than ethiopia so all the uncolonised parts were recognised as ethiopia despite ethiopia never being there. Gode is a great example of a place that was apart of ethiopia that ethiopia didn't have power in. It got ahold of that town/city only in 2006 as ethiopia was heading to give foreign aid to somalia.
Ethiopia wasn't colonized because it was Christian and had no resources like diamonds to attract the major powers. Italy, late in the game and infamously militarily incompetent was hungry for prestige and ill suited to obtain it. Hence the invasion and disaster. Also hence the lack of invasions from other powers.
@@deshawnmoore1731 why didn't the other powers try to colonize them?
Am very proud to be Ethiopian alhamdulilah ❤ Ethiopia 🇪🇹 ❤ ♥
Shut up
Holy crap that pronouncement of Xhosa 😂
It really sounds like it ultimately means "that place on the other side"
80% of this video is about Togo. One of the smallest and practically insignificant country on the continent that doesn't even have that many indigenous languages spoken outside the country. You should change the title of this video from Africa's resilient languages to Togo's.
what a way togo
@@DeenBoi Ha 😂😂. I'm ghana let that one slide.
Or make it a series of videos! This is part 1
@@MonDieuMaCauseMonEpee Kenya tone that humor down a bit?
Ewe is also spoken in southeast Ghana.
Lesotho: "Bruh."
1:17 Afrikaans is a native language tho sure it came from Dutch but was created here in South Africa. The same happend with Xhosa and Zulu it was created out of a Bantu language that came from up north during the Bantu migration 2000 bc - 0 ac.
" Afrikaans is a native language"
Uhm, no buddy, or should I say no boer, afrikans, like the boers who brought it with them from europe, is not native to the African continent. Stop with the revisionist history.
yes it is basically the same case as swahili ,Darija and the so many creoles in the world they are considered to the land they are native to , Punic to is an African language.
@@nixonhoover2 then go to Europe and get me Afrikaans anything people or culture and no we won't accept any Flemish or Dutch since that's not out language.
@@M.Ghilas Kiswahili is predominantly Bantu language based with a few loan words from arabic, again stop with the revisionist history bulshit. 100% of the language spoken by the boers is completely foreign and alien to the African continent.
@@nixonhoover2 You're just being salty, so they are alien what are you gonna do with them kick them back to the Netherlands?
Are you talking about colonization (robbery and crime) or languages in Africa? Africa is the birth place of humanity and languages.
Nothing about swahili?? Umm okayy
How Ethiopia can be described as never having been colonised is beyond me. It formed the most substantial portion of Italian East Africa
It is because the Italian rule was only limited to the large urban center and the battle didn't stop for the whole length of the 5 years. Not to mention that the battle ended in their favor. It is the same scenario as France in WW2. Although it was occupied by the Germans, we don't call it colonization due to the ongoing war.
That wasn’t colonization, that was occupation. Similar to how Germany occupied Denmark
it was a brief occupation. Like America occupied Afghanistan.
Can you use "you're" at the end of a sentence like, "Look at how mad you're."?
Surprise surprise even the danish owe reparations
Libya and roc(republic of Congo)
Not what I had in mind when I said I wanted my order _To go_ but whatever.
Sierra Leone has a similar "debatable" status to Liberia.
The Gold Coast isn't rich in gold though...
The Ashanti have gold. The Gold coast has coco.
It was in the past
@@KateeAngel It never was, it's called the Gold Coast because gold from further inland would be sold to Europeans there.
I have only heard the French tainted Ewe language with its many 'wo' s.

He said benine instead of benin
10:21 familiiiieees bro why do you speak like that 😭
Now we know what to do next time we colonize a place--go lick all the mountains! I spread my tongue that way every time I claim a new planet.
Oh no need to backtrack N.E. colonizers do indeed be "spreading their tongue" on natives. *very unfortunate.*
Pretty inaccurate title lol
I don't understand why people say Ethiopia was never colonized. It was, briefly, by Italy during WW2.
That was NOT colonization. It was a 5 year failed occupation that was contested from start to finish.
There were American troops in Germany for 50 years after world war 2 ended was that colonization or an occupation. Ethiopia wasn't even completely conquered and defeated the Italians only had spaces in the major cities, they were constantly trying to fend off ethiopian troops in the country side.
Barely
Barely
that wasm't really colinization, more standered conquering
Of course today Africa has been almost bought up by the Chinese and there's practically zero reporting about this, until the tipping point 💤🇬🇧😎
Stop peddling lies white boy and get over the fact that you're no longer relevant in Africa. You belong in the ash heap of a distant history.
Ethiopia was colonized by Italy a couple years before WW2. Why do people keep saying they were never colonized.
Because a 6 year occupation does not equal a colony.
Colonisation means a certain amount of official rulership and economical exploitation in times of peace, as well as direct control over the whole government system and legal dominance. While Italy tried to do this, they could not establish full control.
You haters we where not slaves like you people
Please never use red on green.
I don't care. I love how red & green look together. Sorry colour bind people.
