Thank you for this video - I was able to follow it perfectly except for my inability to use an open ended wrench - I had to get a deep socket. And for what it's worth on an Optima the valve is on the left side.
Hello, thanks for the video. I have a 2014 Elantra GT with 53k miles, and the oil level goes from full to just above empty in about 3,000 miles. I'm switching to Quaker state full synthetic, and I bought new crush gaskets (or whatever they're called) for the drain pan nut. If that doesn't work, do you think this could help?
My wife's seems to eat oil as well. Her last change lasted 3800 miles. I changed the PCV valve and now w we're changing out the spark plugs due to misfiring in cylinder 1. I want to see if it gets better after that.
@@EricDIY if you don't mind, please do keep me posted! I'd love to hear if that works because that will be my next step if the oem filters, gaskets and new oil don't help. What oil do you run?
@@dylandetails361 I've done all of that including running Lucas oil sealant to try to seal any gaskets etc....It hasn't done anything except for make the oil last a little longer. I think the spark plug might have been an issue over time but I'm letting my mechanic handle it as the car doesn't start now and I want him to check out the entire thing rather than just try to replace the spark plugs
I have the same issue with my 2015 Hyundai Elantra GLS too and I'm at roughly 156 400 KMS...has replacing the PCV valve helped with the burning oil issue since this video? Either way I'm going to replace it since it hasn't been done yet, but the burning oil issue has been worrying me 😣
It has helped. You should replace it either way. At least look at it and give it the shake test to see if you can hear the spring. It's not an expensive part.
@@EricDIY Confusing though, if it allows unburned fuel to be recycled and burned again it will help fuel economy because it won't suck up the fuel in the tank than adequately using the fuel unburned
@@yousefabulilish6262 If anything, bad pcv valve is good for your engine. It prevents all that sludge from the crankcase from being dumped on your intake valves.
I was told by my mechanic that some engines just do this as they get older. It did not totally solve it but it did make it better and needed to be replaced regardless as you see in the video.
@@EricDIY Thanks for the reply. I have a 2012 Sonata that is consuming oil a pretty quick clip and no leaks of any kind. Will have to try this and see if it at least slows it down.
It's all about personal taste. I always go by the owner's manual as the car company knows best. Synthetic oils have made 3000 mile oil changes obsolete in my opinion and I have not seen any recent owner's manuals saying 3000 mile oil changes
Shouldn't have positive pressure exiting dipstick tube while at idle, if so this would be a possible solution, the other being relatively major, indepth engine repair/rebuild
It did not...I was told by my mechanic who I trust that some engines just use oil as they get older. It did ride a little smoother on the engine after this though
Looking at another video with a 2013 Hyundai Avante, it looks like it's the same engine with a different plastic cover over it. very bad designed...a socket 13/16 or any other will not fit in there.. I had to use thin long nose vise-grip to grab on the pcv eventhough i could not insert them all the way into the cavity. good thing the pcv is not over torqued ...Just replace it the reversal and I recommend putting silicone lub on threads and on O-ring seal and do not overtight it ..the o-ring will do the sealing function ok.. I think you'll find the correct size socket for this PCV valve is a Metric 23 mm.

Hope this helps with oil consumption on a 2012 Sonata 4 cylinder, at least some. Can't hurt at least
My Hyundai dealer in Bradenton would charge about $167,000 to do that.
Thank you so much, that was really helpful

Is the pcv valve a good spot to spray intake valve cleaner?
Is it the same location for a 2012 Santa Fe?
Not sure

Is there a difference is the original pcv valve & the carquest premium ?
Probably not...would have to look at it. I bought this one for around $8-$10 on ebay and it's the official part

Does bad pcv valve hurt fuel economy?
It does not usually..it allows unburnt fuel and combustion gases to be recycled to the engine to be reburned

Have the throttle body cleaned with a carb cleaner and you will be fine.
Use throttle body cleaner, not carb

Vent to atmosphere with a breather
What is a purge valve ?
It's a pcv valve. It returns blowby gases to the engine that come from the engine after the gas and air combination is ignited in the cylinders.
PCV valve changed at 100,000 miles? Why wait so long? Should be changed every 35,000miles give or take!
Not from what I've seen but everyone has their own opinion
