So they are actually the same personality the whole time. Start thinking of this as a metaphor for drug use as well. When you’re high, everything’s amazing but eventually you gotta come back to reality. When you get deeper and deeper you’re chasing that feeling and you just keep doing more and more drugs to keep up the lifestyle, the good feelings. When you come back down you almost feel as if a different person did all those things. How could high me make such a mess of my room???? It’s like a separate entity. But it isn’t. The balance has to be respected, so respect it. It’s a tragic tale of how all we do, we do to ourselves and need to take responsibility for ourselves.
@@nicksaysboo17 Also there’s a hint in the film when Sue has to call the Substance customer help number and specifically states her box number 503. At least that’s when I put it together that they have the same consciousness but could not remember certain things here and there about each other. But of course they are one.
100%. Even if we don't use drugs we often go to bed with the best intentions saying we're going to get up and do something and then immediately abandon that idea once waking up.
Exactly. But also there are the settle things too. Like how does Sue know to call the number for any help from the Substance people. Or how does that older man know it's her, if he wasn't there? Shows that he's the same person. Or how does Sue know where to apply at for that job without being told that there is an opening? Little stuff like that.
Yes they share a consciousness. But as the movie goes on they start seeing each other as separate people but that’s why REMEMBER YOU ARE ONE is drilled into your head because they are still one person.
the fact that universal studios helped finance Coralie Fargeat's The Substance (2024) but deemed it as unworthy of releasing after a screening just goes to show what is wrong with the movie industry today. thanks, mubi for giving filmmakers a chance.
Most people hate sue but when she beat up Elizabeth I related to her lol.. After all, they're both one person It's clearly self harm! She hates herself so much that she beats her to death, that's such tragic and phenomenal symbolism
Imagine if you woke up in the morning at the start of the week and you were a younger version of yourself and then at the end of the week you went to sleep and when you woke up again you were back to your older self. You are the same person just living two different experiences. And your younger version of yourself is usually more reckless. Also...it's a birth mark on the guy's arm showing he's the same person from the hospital.
The Substance is damning but realistic. This doesn't only apply to women, because we all know that men also feel like they need to prove themselves to be loved and accepted.
I feel like that's why the nurse guy appears and is the one to recommend the substance to Elisabeth. Imo, if The Substance ever got a sequel like Smile recently did, it'd be cool to see everything from the nurse guy's perspective too (like as a midquel or something, but with differing kinds of body horror).
You'd be surprised how inadequate I feel as a man on a daily basis being poor and under 6ft. This movie was deeply relatable to me, if I could just have a desirable version of myself women found appealing I'd do it
If barfing up a boob on stage at a New Year's Eve special isn't peak cinema, I don't know what is. Seriously, I watched this on Halloween and the moment the credits rolled, my first thought was that I couldn't wait for this reaction.
This movie is literally David Cronenberg style direction + Demi Moore reflecting on her 90s career × a theme about the abuse of performance/psychoactive drugs + a vibe like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde × the climax of Akira^Perfect Blue....
Straight male reactors: grudgingly admit that Demi looks "good for her age" then slavering like a dog nonstop over Margaret, missing the movie's entire point in the process All my homosexuals: gamely try to suspend disbelief long enough to accept the premise that Demi is anything other than perfection Also, you should use yourself at 33:45 as a reaction in future videos 🤣🤣🤣
Yup noticed this with some not all of the straight male reactors, I didnt finish a lot of their reactions, cause they just didn't get it. The few I did finish have the same feeling Demi was having.
Oliver’s little “Eee!” after Elizabeth tells him to fuck off is hilarious. My friend and I had the best time watching this movie. Like, tears rolling down laughing through almost the whole last thirty minutes. Monstro Elisasue putting those earrings on and then attempting to curl her three strands of hair… chef’s kiss.
This movie was so good; the practical effects were insane and Demi and Margaret have never been better! So glad they’re getting the recognition they deserve; love you Nick!❤️
I said this in my letterboxd review of this film, that i was very aggressively told to love myself. It shows how not only demented, but how destructive self hate can be when it applies to anyone, male or female. It rots you from the inside.
There were so many references to Stanley Kubrick. I almost died seeing all of the beautiful red and orange that we’re so used to having with all of his epic play on color.
Amazing reaction Nick! Yes, she is the same person, I think it is a metaphor of the bad decisions we make when we are young and stupid, all those damages we knowingly cause to out bodies and ourselves we only regret when we become older and we go back and hate our past self for being dumb, as well as the fight scene, it is clearly a representation of self hate, the way Sue smashes Elisabeth's head in the mirror.
I love how stunned silence is the most common reaction to the end of this movie, when I saw it in theaters I caught myself staring at the credits with my mouth hanging open and my hands on my hips like your nosy uncle watching his neighbors have a domestic dispute
NICK. I was already cracking a rib laughing at your reaction, and the Pearl inserts - then you hit us with 29:19 and I just about fell to the damn floor
this was the best movie i've seen this year. As an allegory for addiction I think it was very well done. When you're actively high you have no regard for the consequences of your actions and how you're harming your own body. In the come down you feel ashamed and horrible and think you'll never do it again. But cognitive dissonance sets in and you're right back in the same situation. It's easy to feel like you're two separate people cause of these conflicting thoughts and actions. You start resenting yourself even more thus feeding the cycle of self harm. Cinematography, costumes, sound design, practical effects, and acting are all A1. enjoyed your reaction like always! ❤❤
What a crazy movie that talks about the beauty standards and specifically the beauty standard in Hollywood in such an interesting yet disgusting way. Saw this in theaters and lord was it hard not to throw up in some scenes lol. Demi Moore was absolutely fantastic in this movie and that mirror scene was just too good and depressing. Top 5 of the year
I've watched a lot of UA-camrs reactions to this movie, and as the watchers are first introduced to Fred, they are always negative towards him. Yes, he does come off as weird and creepy, but the watcher realizes later in the film that Fred just had a crush on Elisabeth and is just excited to see her all this time later, and he is not creepy but genuine, and comes to like Fred and encourages Elisabeth to go to Fred. Never judge a book by its cover! 👍👏
I didn't think he was creepy, it seemed obvious to me (and her) he was just a dude with a crush...but it was clear she wasn't interested in him at all, so it was awkward. It was only after she was getting super insecure and desperate for validation that she went back to him (because he was a safe bet, enamored with her). oh Fred and his muddy paper
Something's wrong with me, because 34:17 - when I saw this part in the cinema, I was HOWLING with laughter. Others I'd spoken to said they found this part the most sad to watch. My screening was such a mixed bag.
Don’t try and place a year. Think of like Black Mirror. It’s not exactly set in our universe. Hence how her back split open and was just empty and hollow inside lol
They are the same person with the same personality, but split between two bodies. Since their live experience is so heavily defined by their age, the young and old start to separate over the course of the movie because they do live different lives and everyone treats them differently. They’re both able to wake up near the end because the blood transfusion is just to keep one body asleep at a given time, and that way the host gets to experience both bodies, otherwise it would just be a clone with the same brain structure but no connection to the host. But that ends up being how she experiences it anyways because it’s her job to remember that they are one, but she doesn’t really believe that anywhere in her heart so they separate. But it is still always her consciousness. Sue is Elisabeth she’s just a different and younger Elisabeth. And if the older one had the chance, she would also steal her own life from herself. I don’t see why people are so confused about it when everyone is right 😂 Are they the same person? Yes and also no. That’s the whole premise of the movie is the “yes but no” on them being the same.
I'd heard this movie was good, but I was NOT PREPARED for not just how thematically relevant it was and how AMAZZING the performances and prosthetic work turned out. 12/10!
I clicked so fast! 😂 What an absolutely insane but awesome movie. I wasn't expecting it to go as off the rails as it did. And yes, Demi and Margaret both deserve some serious recognition for this. Phenomenal!
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🍽️ You're the 40th UA-camr to watch this movie. Some reactors have said that its hilarious, gory, sad and very tragic, even surviving as a cautionary tale.
they are the same consciousness - the motorbike take shows it, her mind going from one body to another. that being said, when you are younger you are more impulsive, not thinking about the consequences (which is why all of that happened). her older version has the same consciousness but with an older brain (you know what they say about your brain developing completely after 25) who also hated her own self through her entire life (because we saw Demi Moore's young version and it was NOT mag qualley) and she resents the fact she never looked like that and had to become a "different" person to do so; but they are, indeed, one I also think we can make a parallel to something we've done when we were younger, wasted or something and when we look back we think "jesus, that wasn't me"
I enjoyed this more watching your reaction. Some of the scenes depressed me, especially the part where she was going to meet with her former classmate and she kept criticizing her appearance.
I actually think the hallway is a reference to Shelley Duvall. She was broken down by Stanley Kubrick and the men in Hollywood when making The Shining so I feel like it’s more of a nod to her.

Yaaaaay a 'The Substance' reaction!!! This movie is my favorite of the year 😋 there's a lot of things that can be discussed from this movie, like the way there's a lot of foreshadowing in this film like 18:44 , which is the voice of Monstro Elisasue saying "it's me". Or the moment before Sue met the biker, we saw the biker in the dream sequence, or even the drumstick chicken scene 👀
I think you did a great job editing. The other reactor I saw do this movie wasn’t quite as clear with the story. I have only watched it through reaction video. Your commentary and scenes you chose to show made it much more clear. Thanks.
I love watching horror fans AND queer people react to movies because we KNOW, we GET IT, the commentary is more meaningul. And also because you are hilarious heheh
i love how every youtuber that watches this movie seems confuse about Elizabeth and Sue 💀 It states clearly that they are one. Its just that Elizabeth's self hatred

Daddy knows how to spoil a girl while she recovering from sickness. So when we watching terrifier 3 and or we gonna react to any christmas horror movies ? Side note obsessed with the shirt where you get it ?
I never heard of this movie so this should be an experience. I have heard of the Terrifier series and I honestly don't know if i have the stomach to even watch a reaction. For you, I'll try. I am going to need to raid your wardrobe at some point tho, because that shirt is 💋
I was a bit confused whether they were the same person or different, but then I always thought if Sue was a separate personality, wouldn't she get another job? Like she's young and beautiful, so she could be a supermodel, an influencer, or a TV presenter, but she went back to the same studio with the same awful boss and auditioned for the exact same job Demi had!! Demi loved that job and obviously wanted it back, so... Demi and Sue must be the same person even if they don't seem to remember what the other is doing. It reminded me of those women who are obsessed with plastic surgery and have like 6 facelifts or 12 boob jobs, they have an image in their head of what they want to look like, they have these dangerous surgeries or take black market drugs they ordered online, and afterwards, they still don't look like how they were hoping to, so they get more stuff done... They are in denial, thinking if they have 'one more procedure' they will be young and beautiful, but usually, they end up looking worse, without realising that there was nothing wrong with them in the first place! I think that's why Demi waited too long to stop the experience, she thought if she kept going, it would magically fix everything. I loved this film, I actually watched it with my dad and halfway through, he turned round to me and said, 'Wow...Demi Moore REALLY hates herself, doesn't she?' and I was like, that right there is this film in a nutshell- absolutely brilliant.
So they are actually the same personality the whole time. Start thinking of this as a metaphor for drug use as well. When you’re high, everything’s amazing but eventually you gotta come back to reality.
Don’t get me started on the damn drumstick 🍗 💀
28:32 the best laugh out loud moment in a movie in quite a while. Totally unexpected.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!!!
I think you did a great job editing. The other reactor I saw do this movie wasn’t quite as clear with the story. I have only watched it through reaction video. Your commentary and scenes you chose to show made it much more clear. Thanks.
i'm sorry for commenting so much ugh I just love your reactions
I love watching horror fans AND queer people react to movies because we KNOW, we GET IT, the commentary is more meaningul. And also because you are hilarious heheh
mimi don’t play with my heart like this 🫶🏻
i love how every youtuber that watches this movie seems confuse about Elizabeth and Sue 💀 It states clearly that they are one. Its just that Elizabeth's self hatred
Well they are one in the sense she literally came outta her back! But I didn’t know if she simply woke up in the other body or not.
@@nicksaysboo17 i know, i hope it didnt come off as a snide remark! It was just a silly observation that I was seeing from all my favorite reaction UA-camrs
Love this and especially today of all days! Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving ❤❤❤❤
Daddy knows how to spoil a girl while she recovering from sickness. So when we watching terrifier 3 and or we gonna react to any christmas horror movies ?

Loved your reaction and loved this movie. One of the best of the year. Bonkers and brilliant!!
I never heard of this movie so this should be an experience. I have heard of the Terrifier series and I honestly don't know if i have the stomach to even watch a reaction. For you, I'll try. I am going to need to raid your wardrobe at some point tho, because that shirt is 💋
I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO REACT TO THIS!!!!! Also Happy Thanksgiving Nick 🦃
Seeing this in theaters was super traumatic as hell yet so beautiful. But im so happy everyone is loving this film.
"Ma'am, you don't have an ear to put that on" 🤣🤣
