- In an interview with Andrew Marr party leader Keir Starmer said a Labour government would not seek to nationalise the six big energy companies, despite a leadership campaign pledge to “support common ownership of rail, mail, energy and water”.

All the U.K. energy companies are State Owned. Unfortunately they are owned by the French, German and Dutch States.
The same goes for all British Railway operators. The irony is when you go to those countries, their railways are 10 times better than ours.
Same in Russia ,, the underground is superb and cheap
To be honest, the UK isn't really known for its manufacturing. As a country, we need to start investing more in research, science, infrastructure and education if we want to start building efficient vehicles as well as green energy in order to meet net 0 emissions by 2050.
The headlines should be "Starmer denies Labour will attempt the impossible".
So true
I work in a rail depot in the UK and the trains are either French or Japanese. Nothing British here
He's stiffer than an ironing board. No passion, no charisma, no vision, no nothing.

He just said that he is favor of common ownership. This could be for example mostly state run rail and mail, water and energy owned by the city for example
KS: common ownership doesnt mean nationalization

Important questions to ask... To the sitting prime minister or his cabinet. What's the point to ask this to the opposition?
British media is just a PR for Tories.
The point is to try and understand, as the opposition, what would he do in the longer term to solve the problem if were in power. It seems perfectly reasonable to ask him this.
If it were Boris or his cabinet being interviewed, the question would be 'what ARE you doing about it?', but as its Labour being interviewed the question is quite rightly focussing on 'what WOULD you do?'
And as for the British media being a Tory PR machine, it's ironic that you would suggest that on a video posted by the Guardian (one of the most left leaning publications out there). To be honest I'm amazed the Guardian actually posted this video at all.
@Andy Mag Nice one. You’ll be telling me next that Corbyn would be better than STARMER as Labour leader !! Isn’t an 80 seat Tory majority enough for you ?
@Andy Mag It does make sense. Considering Tory government has been a mess after the other for years, Labour has to be not only incompetent but maybe even accomplice for not putting up a proper opposition.

Keir simply does not understand who "shareholders" are.
They are pensioners, they are you and me, they are your mum, your dad, your nan, your granddad. They are everyone who ever saved for or drew on, a pension.
And if he had an ounce of sense he would want as many succesful businesses as possible available for investment by all and sundry.
The danger is Private Equity, where the best and most profitable businesses are reserved only for the wealthy.
Why do the profits from the British "National Lottery" pay the pensions of Canadian teachers?
Yet public service pensions used to be the best available. It was one of the reasons that so many accepted low wages in the public sector.

Lib Dem is a better alternative. Any alternative that isn't conservative or labour is worth a vote.
Nationalisation is the way it was before Thatcher started using privatisation. Because of privatisation, we have to pay corporate welfare and subsidies which is around £100 billion per annum. Not to mention the constant bailouts and price increases. All of that money is diverted from our taxes to the off-shore bank accounts of shareholders. Nationalisation is a country being self-sufficient and cutting out the middle man (shareholders), Norway is 98% renewables and supplies a portion of our energy. Let's be like Norway...
I like the self-sufficiency angle to nationalisation actually. It should be wielded more often. Simple, understandable, vaguely nationalist which should win over certain segments.
@Jo Sm Albania, Iceland, Paraguay and many other countries are 100% renewable and supply the excess to other countries like us who don't produce our own...Many European countries have nationalised infrastructure, it's not a hard fact to check!
@Jo Sm PS "EU law explicitly protects the right of member states to nationalise industries." Stop listening to Nigel Farage...
@Jo Sm We are already at 43% of our energy requirements (figures from 2020), from renewables and that's after the Tories cut funding to renewables and the British energy creation market. I'd rather be self-sufficient. I've proven you wrong about two statements already so I wouldn't malign my IQ if I were you...
Forget the so called renewable its it costly for people, and a pittance. We Need Nationalisation with Nuclear Power in a country as large as Britain. It's clean safe and cheap.
He's alright to be honest. Ideology has no place in politics
and sadly the reason why he is unpopular with many, because they can't think outside of ideology. Mindless drones.

Much easier.
Starmer is pragmatic about it. He won’t raise taxes on his rich pals. End of discussion.
*his dulll face looks like a slice of white bread*
Which one?
Yes because nationalised industries always work so well. I am old enough to remember what it was like when utilities were nationalised and it was way worse than now. The problems we have currently are down to mismanagement at government level not down to energy companies. Over reliance on fragile green energy sources with insufficient backup, this has been going on for decades now.
If you do a bit of research you'll find you're paying approximately 20% more on utility bills since they became privatised. Tell Sid.
Definitely agree that Utilities should be run for non profit. However everything else the government should stay out because it just ruins it!!
Like the 20p, carrier bag tax? Not really sure that was 100% thought out. Has not damaged anything though I suppose.

The government serves certain class interests, of course you hate it when they represent the bourgeoisie. Will you hate it if we achieved the dictatorship of the proletariat? I think not.
Anyone is better than Boris.
TORY
We need to be self reliant and not relying on foreign owned companies who milk the UK tax payer for every penny while America and many other countries have 4x lower bills than us. Build 20 nuclear power plants around the UK in rural areas so we can be self sufficient. Scotland has stopped increase in council tax for next year. Spain has cut all taxes on energy bills. The UK are paying more taxes than ever. Sort it out boris and scrap the green tax. Either scrap green tax or face prosecution for the people who die who can't afford to heat their homes. It is disgusting.
