We both enjoy the sailing videos. The wife especially likes to see your on land adventures (well lets just call it what it is, she loves to see the great places to shop and drink), but I think Tips on Tuesday is the best!!!
I am glad you saw some good information. I hope the next two videos about the rebuild process of the furling system and the outhaul system will also be of help to many sailors! All the best!
@@SailingAquarius I am soaking up as much information as I can at the moment, as I scour Oz for a boat, but the lockdown down south and voluntary isolation expectations here in Queensland are making it difficult.
@@SailingAquarius Ken/Zivile, something in the 40'-50' range...sloop/ketch blue water centre cockpit cruiser. I had a guy interested in a swap for my motorhome for a 44' ketch up in Bundaberg a few weeks back but then I got stuck here with the lockdown, and there must have been someone else who had already been on it, and it got sold. This coronavirus couldn't have come at a worse time: I have a Super Tenere 1200 adventure bike down in Victoria where my son left it after he crashed it before he took a job in Canada late last year, and a Land Rover 6x6 Defender that tended to go to Cape York in, and now after watching you guys on UA-cam it's awakened a yearning I had 37 years ago when I actually bought a yacht and pulled out of the deal--long story but I was young and a career opportunity came up--all I want to do is go sailing and I have to first round up my goods and chattels and park or dispose.
As you can see, I have a hard time getting the videos out. Had to buy and learn some new software this time to do the graphics. Now that that is done, I think I can start getting these videos out each week. Z is doing the Weekend vids, so I got to start pulling my weight! Fair winds, and stay safe!
@@SailingAquarius Hi Folks ,it is a bit cheeky of me to ask for more. I am glad you are doing okay. The news seems be encouraging with some countries now lifting their lockdowns. Take care and looking forward to your next post whenever you can .
Hi Tom, You are correct. If you were sailing with the Main deployed and you had an electrical failure, and thus not able to use the electric outhaul and furler, you would drop the furler motor first loosening the four bolts on the side of the mast. Then you would remove the bolt on the outhaul winch that connects the shaft to the sheave and then you would crank the furler manually to furl the sail. I have to had a power failure on Aquarius, but that is what I would do if I did.... Fair Winds, Ken
I have already made most of the changes that I would ever want to do.. Anything that makes the rig quiet while sailing. Soft shackles so that no metal to metal connections make a big difference. I met up with a couple circumnavigating, the wife was an MD, and the husband was an actual nuclear physicist. I was looking at their genoa sheets, and they were cheaper, stretchy lines, and I ask why they didn't have the nice none stretch dyneema lines. And he told me if you're cruising, you want the stretch because your sails last 2 times longer, and so does all the running rigging attach to my stretchy lines. Cruising is very different than racing. You're less worried about getting to the destination fast, and more worried about not breaking something. I like the way Aquarius is currently set up, and I believe she is ready for the Indian Ocean and beyond. Fair Winds
If the out haul motor failed or gearbox jammed with high winds and you needed to get the sail in quickly, you could take a knife and cut the outhaul or the dyneema line to the clew. That might be dangerous because the sail might flap around and hit you, or cause the sail not to furl properly. Thus, it would be better to just remove the screw on top of the outhaul winch as I did in the video and furl the sail using the furler motor. You may want/need to add some tension by grabbing the outhaul sheet as sail furls. That would be a two person job. Best, Ken
That was an add-on! I think our BAT was trying the social distancing thing. He told me his friends were all getting sick and needed to get away.. :). All the best!
Somehow I feel smarter than I did 15 mins ago. 🤓The smart thing is to save this vid , the hard part is remembering where to find it. Zivile you needs to cut back on the yoga, your forearm is too manly, from my perspective anyway.😂. Love the intro, very crisp, that takes time, what edit software are you using? D

Thanks Ken,
Very informative.
Wishing you both the very best. Stay well
Thanks Peter, Fair winds, and be safe!
Very useful video - it gives insight to the clever design of Amels
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome... will be very helpful. Thanks Ken! Your boat will be Bristol shape when the quarantine passes!
I hope so Steve! Take care, and where are you now?

You’re very nice video one question if you had catastrophic power failure that would be another reason to disconnect the gearboxes?

Great video, are there rigging upgrades or changes you would make after sailing this Amel for many 1000's of miles?

How much of an issue would it be if the outhaul motor or gearbox failed in high winds and you needed to reef or even fully furl in a hurry?
If the out haul motor failed or gearbox jammed with high winds and you needed to get the sail in quickly, you could take a knife and cut the outhaul or the dyneema line to the clew. Remove the Bat ! Too funny :-)
Had to give him an eviction notice. He had stayed there rent free for far too long!
Is that bat specific to your AMEL model? Are replacement bats available at the local chandlery? :-)
That was an add-on! I think our BAT was trying the social distancing thing. He told me his friends were all getting sick and needed to get away.. :). All the best!
You could have had a game of cricket if you had found a ball!
“Remove Bat from Mast” 😜 Hmm. How come I can’t find that in the Repair Manuel ?
Good job you were not in UK Waters you would have needed a permit & a 3 month wait to move the Bat !!,
:) Do you also have to make sure they get three meals a day while they hang out. Yes, pun intended! Fair winds, and please take care!
