- I just tried to measure and calculate the speed and kinetic energy of the projectile.
I don´t have professional measuring tools, so I came up with counting the frames of the slow mo video.

Mistake found! Here are the real results: (footage were shot in 240fps not 480)
1 Rubber band: 13/240= 0,0542 seconds per meter => 18,461 m/s ; E= 0,232J
2 Rubber bands: 10/240= 0,0417 seconds per meter => 24 m/s ; E= 0,37J
3 Rubber bands: 9/240= 0,0375 seconds per meter => 26,7 m/s ; E= 0,484J
4 Rubber bands: 8/240= 0,0333 seconds per meter => 30 m/s ; E= 0,612J

If you compare these results to a similar experiment in which you fire the projectile normally, except without a barrel to so slow it down, you could calculate the amount of friction the barrel imparts upon the exiting projectile by using the work-energy theorem. It would be interesting to see how much or how little the projectile is impacted by the barrel. Just in case you happen to actually be interested in partially dismantling your Lego Sniper, here are the details in order to calculate the barrel friction:
KE1=Kinetic Energy of projectile with barrel interference (J)
KE2=Kinetic Energy of projectile without barrel interference (J)
x=Length of the barrel (m)
f=Barrel friction (N)
f=(KE2-KE1)/x

Oh that would be interesting, acutally the barrel on this sniper is meant to be easily removed.
I might try that also with the new AWP I’m currently working on. The gun it self is almost 1.2 meters long.

Hey Kevin! I was working in one of your first snipers, and the big problem to increase the power was always the trigger. I 3D printed the trigger mech because I can’t figure out a way to do with Lego, I will post a video of this gun soon. Thks for the content, u are the best!

If you want to compare the easy way, try looking how far the projectile bounces back after hitting the end and test it in different ranges

Plotting number of rubber bands again the energy (J), gives an equation of y = 0.1254x +0 .111 with an R squared value of 0.9988. This means the number of rubber bands is directly proportional to the energy in Joules.

İs there a lot of force on the trigger or is it easy to pull (not very comfortable with too much resistance on the trigger).
Cool idea! I built the gun and have an airsoft chronograph so I wanted to see if I got the same results. Here’s what I got on a 3 shot average:
1 rubber band: 50.6 fps, 0.16 joules
2 rubber bands: 71.8 fps, 0.32 joules
3 rubber bands: 84.8 fps, 0.45 joules
4 rubber bands: 98.0 fps, 0.60 joules
So overall I think our results are pretty similar in velocity (I don’t know if my chronograph calculated the joules correctly), but your way of measuring is awesome considering all you had to work with is a slow motion camera and mathematical formulas 😂
Not sure but i think it calculatet the joules wrong because your chronograph is set on 0.2 gram bbs and the lego projectile weights 1.36 grams.
lego bullets can't reach 60 m/s yeah
@@Pedashredder Nah I input the projectile weight as 1.36g. I think it’s just a miscalculation or something because there’s no way the joules should be that low when the bullet is 6x the weight of a standard airsoft bb
Yeah I don’t know if and what I calculated wrong, but the calculations seem logic to me, but the result of over 2 joules still irritates me.
Maybe it has something to do with air resistance, because the lego bullet looses speed very fast.

3:39 you should try stacking two L shapes together next time. That way the trigger will be thick enough to withstand the force of more than 1 rubber band.
Nah you misunderstood, those were already 2 L shapes, one of them broke off completely.😅

Beim Airsoft braucht ja alles über 0,5J das F im Fünfeck und eine unter 0,5J auf über 0,5J zu tunen und sie nicht abnehmen zu lassen ist somit ein Verstoß. Aber wie sieht das aus wenn man sich ne starke Lego Waffe baut?^^

You can I don't think you can easily modify the tip of the lego bullet (bcs the trigger mechanism requires it to be pressed to the trigger). It might be possible if you constructed a small mechanism inside the bullet with a sharp pin and spring (so that the pin doesn't interfere with firing, but sharpens the bullet on impact) but doing this would require some engineering and modification to Lego.
Yeah you potentially could but not with this mechanism bc the foam of a nerf dart is not rigid enough. The power of this mech relies on the rubber bands creating tension behind the bullet. A nerf dart would just crumple.

That seems logical, but I am pretty sure I captured it in native 480 frames per second with the samsung s21 . So 4 times slower as a 30 fps video.

while editing the video, I had to set the slow mo footage to 800% to get the normal speed.
it is a bit confusing, but 16 times slower isn´t true because you need the double amount of fps...here for example:
60 to 30 fps = 2x slower
120 to 60 = 2x slower
240 to 120 = 2x slower
480 to 240 = 2x slower
The footage is 480 fps but still I´m not sure for the end result yet

@Kevin183 if 480f is 1 second, then 30 fps would be 16 Seconds: 480 ÷30 =16. So it'd be 16x slower.
