Installing Windows 11 to defaultuser0

- Hello, my friends! Let's hit 20K likes? Check out my website! enderman.ch
Today I am going to install Windows 11 to defaultuser0. Microsoft gradually stopped supporting the ability of users to change their default Windows install path. It is still possible, however, causes mayhem...
Still got questions? Don't hesitate, send them to contact@enderman.ch!
Hope you have a great day!

I wonder what happens when you install to a separate directory in 9x and then try to update it to higher versions
Probably changes to default once you hit 2K or XP. NT is built different.
@@AROAH How about the same but in windows xp
Irrc you can get as far as the vista installer then it complains
@@AROAH2K installs to WINNT.
Windows XP would keep it, but upgrading to vista will reset the installation folder to C:\WINDOWS, so if you install Windows 98 to C:\RICKASTLEY, it would work until XP, and after vista it would reset to C:\WINDOWS

Honestly, the most scary part is UWP taskbar in Win 11
RIGHT!
Nah it's still the same thing as in 8 just built differently, windows 11 has an uwp taskbar
One day I swear whole thing runs in WebView2 💀
Pretty sure that were every build before windows 11 rtm came out@@cool-jd8hg
@@cool-jd8hg That's exactly what OP was referring to, the fact that it's UWP. Putting all the controversy over "Windows 10 vs 11 vs 7 vs..." taskbar aside, the fact that they've gone and turned the _taskbar_ into a UWP app is... wrong? horrifying? I don't know what exactly but it hurts me deep inside
Taskbar should be a part of explorer.exe, change my mind
The most interesting experiment yet! Loved the amount of breakage.
Unfortunate how the "C:/Windows" path is hardcoded so much into the system apps... would've been cool if they still allowed custom installation directories.
for what point lol?
@@com_padre Not much of a point, but it would've been cool to still have that functionality. Though I see why Microsoft wouldn't care about it.
@@UsuallyLime Not only not care but also take precautions. As much as it would be cool, it would also be totally useless and just open up a door for bugs and exploits which I'm sure no one wants.
@@TheBooker66 True.

The username collision aversion is to protect companies from connecting to a domain with the same username. This may cause a catastrophic failure if it's allowed.
Remember, if Windows developers hardcode C:\, most companies hardcode current user, or make their own function.
Microsoft actually uses %systemdrive%, mostly everywhere.

That folder conflict thing is actually probably part of the same system that handles AD folder collision. Usually in AD if a local user has the same name as a domain user the domain user gets username.domainname as the folder, looks like this is just that but locally, I doubt it's from older versions....or rather it probably is but not for any reason related to you installing windows there.
FINALLY THE LEGEND IS BACK! We missed you endermanch
The legend is back
12:49 Well, you technically did not install windows in defaultuder0, you’re not outsmarted by windows because of some old NT heritage. Whenever a user profile is created with a preexisting folder with an identical name in the Users folder, Windows will change it to a “username.computername” naming scheme, when it does that, you can change the user profile path in the system registry and move over the user data and registry hive, that way, the user profile points to the same defaultuser0 folder.
yo i got a cool video idea, what if we set the installation path to something so long that windows cant install properly without breaking the character limit??
amazing video btw

Why u here
This was an amazing video, and actually really interesting that it ran - I'm surprised there wasn't more things in the way of stopping you doing that 🤣
Happy your back, and hopefully youtube isn't going to be stupid again - You've Got this!!!
finally ive been waiting for new content for 2 months, loved seeing this vid!
It honestly makes me mad how Microsoft can’t just support UWP apps for the SYSTEM account. Windows is so screwed up that it literally needs to take five hours to set up a user profile just so you can use that unresponsive OOBE. It’s quite buggy too. Sometimes people get locked out of their computers before the OOBE even starts because defaultuser0 forces them to type a non existing password on the lock screen. I can’t imagine how many people threw away their brand new computers because of this annoying defaultuser0 problem. I hope this will be fixed by the time Windows 12 comes out. Also great video Enderman! Glad you are back.
That's to be expected from an OS that's been built on top of source code from 1985 (mostly)
Why would you even use Windows with SYSTEM account
@@phonl1I’m saying the OOBE should run within the SYSTEM account rather than a user context. That way it would be much more reliable and stable. Since it literally needs to log you into a separate account to use the oobe, log you out when you are done, then log you into your actual account.
@@juango500Windows 11 and all other windows NT Based systems are based off of Windows NT Workstation 3.1 which is from 1993 (NT workstation was made from scratch (probably excluding icons and sounds)

You truly mastered Windows installations!
Great content, keep it up 👍
Very Impressive, love your work!
Hey Andrew ! I found another remnant from windows 10 in windows 11 so if you open control panel move the directory up two times then that will show to windows 10 styled explorer. It functions the same but the upper panel is from windows 10 and all icons are from windows 11. Also if you go to C:\Windows\Media then there are a lot of sounds from older windows like windows 10 & 7. Its fun to watch your remnant videos so keep making other parts.
I found an older version of all the icons in the settings app (windows 10 settings app) this happened on windows 11
There’s also a bunch of random files that seemingly are squares of blue or black
I heard everything in media, All were truly gold!
The windows 10 logo is still present in the windows folder in windows 11
Ok so after a bit of digging I found what I believe was the code that would’ve defined how Cortana was supposed to show up in a live tile on windows 10 (still on windows 11 where live tiles are gone)
@@superNova5837 they introduced copilot now and Cortana is depreciated in latest windows 10 update

Some of your malware ransomware videos were hidden for a while but now they are back thanks
I would love to see a video on "manual" windows installation, before this video I never put the pieces together and realized that the fundamental way windows is installed got changed at some point.
How do you learn all this stuff? I can pull off this type of cursed stuff on Linux, but Windows seems like a whole different beast. Theres just so much *stuff* to wrap your head around, a lot of it from older versions that just got kept around. Plus, its not open-source, so you can't just change the code and rebuild, or peek inside of it to see what it's doing. Is there documentation somewhere on how windows works internally?
Great video as always, btw. Glad to see you're back!
he made a vid on manual installation for 10/11
I love your videos Andrew! You are a legend ❤
Fascinating! That was super cool, thanks very much and well done!
12:46 That check is commonly seen in Active Directory environments. If you try to log into AD account where it already exists on the local machine, you'll get a "username.directory" user folder instead of the regular "username"
Yes! The moment I have been waiting for. More destruction and experiments! ❤❤Keep going!
I usually don't comment much, but seeing you come back makes me happy

Welcome back, man. I hope things are going well for you.
Glad to see you're back! Hope you'll upload a new video of the winxp machine you've built soon😅
Yepp. Win11 taskbar is an UWP. But you can bring back the Win 10 one to make it work. And also for the start menu, you can use somethin' like OpenShell.
Glad to see you're back
glad to see ya back
Now try to install Windows 11 to a folder like CON or AUX or maybe even illegal symbols like slashes!
He already did that with windows 10 and as we all know win10 = win11
@@diyfan2808 nah windows 11 changed thing in illegal folder
Windows 11 now allows the creation of these folders (at least not via Explorer) and you can access it normally now. Some apps may still have a problem with these folders (eg. Paint)

Finally, you're back!
It would be very cool if you did a video about "Bringing back the Windows 7 basic theme on windows 10" (like killing dwm.exe but more permanent)
ntdev made a video on that, pretty unstable but works. On win 11 u also gotta remove dwmcore.dll to get the cursor back, and since on windows 10 explorer will crash without sihost, you can instead rename or delete systemapps in c:\windows and keep sihost.
Could you get around the hardcode problems by creating a link from Windows to the defaultuser0 directory?

Just wondering what would happen if we create a symlink/junction from defaultuser0 to C:\Windows to "fix" the stuff with the hardcoded path

I wonder how far you can break the windows installation, keep going
Can you please make a video where you install windows onto the EFI partition?
i thought i was a windows enthusiast myself before finding your videos.
There is actually another way - When you first install windows10 and end up in the oobe, press shift+F10 and from there plug in a usb with a win11 install on it and with that command line start setup.exe on that drive and perform an ImPlace Upgrade from Win10 to Win11. I accidentally did this at work once, lol
8:53 - 0.001%
the specified domain does not exist or cannot be contacted
That's one incredibly rare error
I was guessing if we could somehow deploy windows into a wpe's disk (basically installing complete windows onto the installer deployment drive)
