  • Take a walk through a progression of User Interface standards and advancements from a Software Engineers perspective from 1986 until the early 2000’s. The GUI we use today wasn’t always the only path as we’ll see from demos and real world application examples used on a variety of platforms.
Slides to his presentation can be found here: vcfed.org/wp-c...
Recorded on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at the InfoAge Science and History Museums in Wall, NJ where the Vintage Computer Federation Museum is located.

Odd that the Atari ST / GEM was completely left out.

The title says "An engineer's GUI journey", not "The definitive GUI journey", He obviously didn't have experience on all the GUI out there.

Pretty sure he wasn’t a Mac guy or a Lisa guy when he highlights the popular operating systems and events of the 80s, 90’s etc. just sayin if your gonna point out New Coke, M.A.S.H, etc etc. when you get to operating systems and you put GEOS and Commodore in there I think GEM / Atari also deserve a spot somewhere and it’s non existent throughout the entire talk. Seemed odd. Be like sayin popular cars of the 80’s were Toyota and Nissan and leaving out Honda.

@@sideburn It's all cultural, I don't think German people would pick those three brands for popular cars in the 80's, etc.

Fellow Okie here. Interesting how Oklahoma seemed to have a big Delphi / Turbo Pascal presence back in the 90s. I wrote a ton of business specific applications in them back in the 90s.

I think that was driven by the curriculum as all the Universities seemed to lean heavily into Pascal back then.

Such a same history so many of us have experienced.
As for next gen UI on the web?
Not really sure going away from standard menu elements and click able UI is going to change.
The real trick is to send users to the correct location automatically when possible.
So say the user has project approvals pending, then don't show a list of projects with one showing awaiting approval, but send user to that project page first so they can approve that project.
In other words attention to the current work flow and task as to why they are in your web site in the first place makes the most sense.
So moving from GUI back to text UI don't make a whole lot of sense.

Borland compiler was great. I do remember though, absolutely hating the memory model, near and far pointers and all that crap. Put me right off x86 to this day. Jumped right on Power PC, then finally arm. I’d missed the early days of ARM though.

Where would one expect it to improve though? It does not move byond nural linguistic programming, it will never go byond this. I was training models in the ‘90s to do this. CPU power much increased and can be used on most trivial things but mech… snake oil for suckers.

and its 2024 and we're back to text commands, but now you have to keep repeating them to stupid "Alexas" that they call "intelligent" for some reason, I'm talking about the AI crap.
edit: oh you said it later, its crap because people are trying to shove the old way of doing things in a different paradigm and the end result is crap
