Qmed Joe Amen brother!! I'm a 11 year Master Tech and I,,,we shop guys hate the new one, ie 16 and up, and our used front line is full of them, people hate the new ones after they traded there older ones.
Tip on the 2.7 - Replace the timing chain and oil pump at around 250 - 300 k. 497k on my '98. Please bring back simple trucks. Oh yeah, that'll happen...
@Militant 541 What I usually see is that people will maintain timing belts but will neglect maintenance on timing chains. I know it's annecdotal, but I can't even count how many older cars and trucks come in the shop because the factory chains were stretched and causing timing issues. I also have swapped engines for people who had theirs destroyed by timing chain failure. Suffice it to say, it's not a fault of the technology; but rather neglect by the owner.
@Militant 541 And by the way, I have the engine in this video which is a 4-cam non-interference engine with a timing belt. 411,000 original miles on a 24 year old motor. Seems okay to me 🤷♂️
Good video. I bought a 2015 Toyota Tacoma with the TRD off-road package. My friends are all full size Ford fans and yes they all have the full size Fords. They made a lot of fun of me until we went off roading. They found out their big heavy trucks could not keep up with my little Tacoma. They couldn't go places my Tacoma to go. I was the one who had the last laugh. I had to pull two of them out of the mud with my little Tacoma. LOL
LSanti I wish my beloved lo-mi 96 Tacoma, just like THIS one hadn't RUSTED the FRAME to DUST last month. I wanted to drive it FOREVER. I PRAY for a way to DO that STILL. I'm retired, not rich. Older pickups are less dependent on computers and more on the driver, and less electrical components to breakdown or malfunction. '93 Toyota pickup dlx 4x4 still running at 351,000. It's my go to for rough terrain off roading because it has a shorter wheel base with better clearance and departure/approach angles than my '13 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road.
my 98 sr5 is a standard with the windows and locks are manual too, its not a 4x4 but it has a strong towing capacity,we hauled 3 trips of gravel 1100 pounds each
My 03 has 260,000 km and is still running strong. I plan on driving it for ever, Love the fact that it is pure no minimal electronics to get in the way like traction control. & they are still relatively easy to work on.
My parents Tacoma only has 99k and it's a 1995 SR5 5 speed manual 4x4 V6 and it's the same color like in the video and it's in great condition no rust 🙂
I'd take the old one simply for the ease of repair. Plus a lighter truck generally will get through muddy conditions not scraping the undercarriage as heavily. Too bad we can't buy a new mini 4X4 truck like that anymore. SUV's are the only alternative if one wishes to remain under 3000lbs.
Wow, two great trucks. One classic and one pro. The classic is where it started and the pro is what it’s developed into. I love my TRD pro. The Tacoma’s are very capable trucks regardless of whether they are new or old. I love your classic Tacoma.
This is a really poor video comparison. You don't do any real off roading; driving through a puddle and on a dirt road that is flat isn't what we were looking for.
Guess his idea of off road is any road that does not have pavement. Stupid remark he makes "Getting out of the new TRD and getting back into the 1st gen is like stepping back 2 generations" Duh that's because it is 2 generations apart.
Dude you can upgrade your suspension with so many options! One word... Bilstein! There is alot of debate, but quite frankly, you can do so many great upgrades!
I just bought my first taco 3 weeks ago and I love it. It’s red like yours but is 2WD but has rear diff and came with a camper shell. Literally my dream car
I had a new 1995 Tacoma 4wd and hit a guard railing at 65 mph cutting it into, fell asleep at the wheel then I bought a 2000 Tacoma sr5 extended cab 4wd, it has 220,000k and still running great.
I used to have a ‘98 sr5 extended cab v6. It was one of the best trucks I’ve driven and did everything I ever asked it to do without any issues. I haven’t driven the current generation but I would absolutely buy another one of the first generation
God I have worked my 04 Tacoma so hard over the last 15 years...it has helped my business make over a million dollars and never had a single problem. Towing, hauling, off road abuse. Just basic maintenance done to it. 3RZFE with 226,000 miles so far and it still runs like new. Doesn't burn any oil, sounds like the day I bought new.
2nd gen is the perfect balance between the old and new. I bought an 06 RWD tacoma in 2013 and drove it for 9 years. After much searching I found a 15 trd offroad access cab with a manual transmission. Put new suspension, wheels and tires on it and IMO now have a better truck than if i were to walk into a dealership and buy brand new.
Just got my 1st gen 2000 Prerunner 3.4L love this truck minus plush comfort of the late models but the looks and their simplicity draws me into to it and I can care less about the new ones with their problem. With 207K on it I will keep it running till I can’t drive no more and the good thing it was given to me as a Xmas present. I am a totally lucky man! 1st gen all the waaaay!
Reid Anderson so compare it to an sr5. With inflation your truck would cost 28k today. A regular sr5 is probably 33k and comes with a whole lot more. The tacoma is a good buy and holds its value well, but you knew that.
I paid 11k for mine. ‘04 ext. cab, white/tan, auto. 4x4, 160k miles, new bilstein shocks, 3” lift, new tires. Extra clean , no rust anywhere. Expect to pay anywhere 12 to 15 for a late model, low mile creampuff. Early years are cheaper, around 7 to 8k for the 4x4. 2 wheel drives are plentiful, and pretty cheap.
I'd take old Tacoma's anyday. I like that rugged feeling going some good fun off-road. I don't want to feel like I'm in a mattress lol that's for bedtime. Although I do want those fox shocks!
Great video. Almost like a short film. I just bought a 1998 Tacoma myself. Mine has the 2.7 liter 4 cyl and automatic. Probably won't see too many trails but I did test drive it in a field and on road and it handled just as you said!
I recently sold my 1995 taco and bought a 2016. I was definitely sad to see the old girl go, but it was starting to have lot of problems and I needed something that was more comfortable for the wife and kid. So far the new one has been great in every respect, I hope to get it up to 300k as well.
If windows was a car, It would be called a lemon and all of them would recall but they would have to be picked up by a wrecker because they don’t start up
1st gen Tundras share a lot of suspension parts from pre 05 Tacomas. 1st gen tundras are for the most part cheaper than used Tacomas but the gap is closing.
I had a 1971 hilux, 1986 xtra cab, a 1994 tacoma, a 2002 xtra cab tacoma witch I wracked, a 2005 tacoma , and I got a 2017 4x4 v6 xtra cab tacoma, now you see what I only drive. I do miss the 05 tacoma that I had for 12 years only thing I had done to it was buying a starter for it.but must say the 2017 sure is sweet with the features on it. They all good trucks.
toyota has called them access cabs since the intro of the second gens. the xtra was just the first gens, but old habits are hard to break. i used to drive my father's late 80's hilux sr5 xtra cab. fun truck. have a 2016 now.
A real pickup in my opinion has to be stiff so you can feel the road that you're driving that's the real fun if I want a smooth and quiet ride I get Cadillac
My 1st genny is still going strong even tho the previous owners didn't take the best care of it. Few key upgrades and it could out climb the new gen tacomas anyday.
The body design of the 1998 Toyota Tacoma SR5 have always been my favorite Toyota truck design. The body lines have always seemed perfect and classic to me. I have never liked the body lines of the generations of Tacoma that followed.
I have a 99 Tacoma SR5 5 speed manual with 250,000 miles on it. I could easily drive that truck for at least another 6-7 years. There is a slight loss of power 0 to 60 isnt the best but all around most reliable day to day I've ever had, handles Montana like its nothing.
My 96 Taco FRAME RUSTED THRU. Only 154k and it's TOAST! I wanted to own /drive it forever! Love it, everything is GREAT but that CRAP frame. Wutta cryin shame. Not ready to give up. I'd buy another old one w hi mi, if it only HAD A FRAME!
I have a2002 TRD ome 3" lift, ARB bumper, 32" Wrangler m/ts 70 k miles not going anywhere, plus rust free. Have had many trucks these you just can't beat them
azorianification I used ome leaves on rear, I used ome one 06 lj rubicon, 85 4 runner, 3rd gen 4r, and my current 02 TRD, I'm 58 and made and used them all OME is all I use now,
Nice video man 👍, I live in the Great Northwest as well. I love Tacoma's, I have a 2010 tacoma TRD off-road, it would have been sweet to have the 2nd gen in there as well.
Ive owned several 1999 to 2004 Tacoma trucks, they are PERFECT sized... When I run the miles up too high, I look around for something under 150K and buy that one... They are getting harder to find... I hope someone else will make a good reliable "SMALL" truck. Im not interested in the GIANT Tacoma.
On head room-possibly I’m just too used to my F150 but when I went to test drive a Tacoma it felt incredibly cramp to just get into and my seating position had my head practically touching the headliner. I’m going back when they have one in that has a glass moon roof to see if it affords any more space but as it stands now I’m too big at 5’10.5”. Also, I haven’t test driven yet but the scoop on the hood blocks a lot of your field of vision looking forward. I believe the TRD Off-road deletes the scoop though.
Not surprised by the outcome, but let down by the video. Would have been nice to have seen some side by side comparison of what each truck did and how it performed off road especially, rather than a blanket statement at the end saying they were both good and the Gen 1 held its own.
I'm thinking of buying a 1st Gen Tacoma TRD OR. Obviously those trucks are super reliable. But do you guys think it's a safe bet here 15-20 years later? If the engines have less than 200k miles on it and were taken care of right, will it still last me another 10 years after I buy it? What about the automatic transmissions on them? I would go for the manual but I need a Double Cab and they only came with Automatics.
Way better than the 3.slow, I don't care for timing belts. My collection includes a 85 reg cab, 86 reg cab, 86 4 runner, 88 ext cab and 09 Taco. IMO a truck should ride like a truck, not a car; I don't expect the modern pluses from my second generation Toyota's that I get out of my 09 Taco. However I don't beat on my Taco like I do my other Toyota's. It does pull my trailer hauling one of my other trucks to play and bring it home in comfort, usually the other Toyota gets broken so it doesn't offer a ride home. I could never play hard if I had to drive it home, however once I got my Taco I could beat on my other Toyota's and it didn't matter if they broke because all I had to do is get it back on the trailer. Being a certified diesel technician I fix my own junk, I have one for the beach, one for the mountains and one for the mud. I'm still looking for a 87 and a 89 so I can have every year of the second generation, just because. I also own 4 Fords so my yard looks like a used car lot, what can I say it's a mechanic thing.
I wasn't sure about 89, that's cool though because that's one less year I have to buy. My 88 extended cab has that piece of junk 3.slow, I would have preferred the 22RE. I have inclinometers for every second generation I own, I have 3 solid front axles a few transmissions and transfer cases and a assortment of driveshafts. Just a few things on the farm. To be honest I'm really not sure exactly what it is about the second generation trucks, I just really like those trucks. So thanks for clearing that up for me, I don't buy every Toyota I look at, most have been run hard and put up wet; Parts trucks at best. I don't buy junk and I'm happy to pay a fair price for a truck. Check it, I got a Toyota E'locker with a "Modified front housing" on Ebay for $230 in Marionet Ga. I live in Virginia. The dick head canceled the auction because nobody bid on his shit. Because he wasn't willing to ship. He relisted the third member and "Modified axel housing" again, I won the auction for $130 and drove to Ga to get it. He seemed a little disappointed when I told him the housing was junk; All I wanted was the E locker. I have a pair for my 86, I'm gonna call the two buttons my "F#$k you I'm going through there" buttons, while it seems a bit long winded; I can have 1 front and 1 rear wheel off the f$%&ing ground, and my junk will keep pullin. Plus it has a stereo that would make a black man jealous. Not sure if I mentioned the 800+ HP heart. A lot of time and a lot of money have gone into this project. See I almost achieved "Redneck" status, The directions to my house include "Leave the paved road" Yet I fell short because I didn't have a 40K 4X4, Ain't that a b%h?; So I started building.
They don’t make trucks like the first gen Tacoma’s. Yeah they ride like a lifted skate board but they are LIGHT and not wide like the new ones. Plus their proven reliability and ease to work on. Love the comparison but wished this included some treacherous trails. I’d take my first gen Tacoma over the new ones any day. If I wanted a truck that big I’d just step up and buy a Sierra 1500 🤷🏼♂️.
huh neat the new Tacoma runs the same size i run on my 2005 Dodge Dakota, 265/70r16s stock would be 245 for me, that little bit taller tires definitely helps clearance without a lift
I'll keep my 2004 double cab 4WD until it falls apart. I hate how obese the 05+ Tacomas are, Toyota truck reputation was made on the compact pickups, bring them back! You might as well just buy a Tundra if you want a new Tacoma because they're so close in size but you get more truck for the money in a Tundra plus a V8 which is nice as the new 3.5 V6 Tacoma is a joke compared to the old 3.4 and 4.0 from the respective first and second generations.
In the Pro trim the new truck can tow at least 6400lbs. And the heart of this truck is not the shocks. It’s the drivetrain and overall build quality. The Fox shocks are ok. But let’s not make them out to be more than they are.
Amazing that the older Taco keeps up with an outfitted TRD Taco just fine! Even though I don't think it seems like a fair fight on paper. Why not outfit a new Taco to be as close as the older one and see what happens
@@lassaut6794 I would buy a used truck for small time work, and small time off reading, and buy an Accord pre 2008 for regular commuting. Commuting in a truck which uses more gas and lower resale value is just beyond me.
You're an hour away from Tacoma. You're video had the chance to be called Tacoma vs Tacoma in Tacoma. Come on man.
Trenton Piatt so close yet so far
Hahaha.
1st gen is a whopping 1000 lbs lighter than the latest Tacoma. It doesn't need as much HP to get it moving.
I'll keep my '99 TRD
It’s actually faster than the 3rd gen also, TFL did a video of it years ago.
Both are excellent but, the older one is lighter on the wallet and easier to repair. Prefer less electronics!
And give me a manual I'm set. Wish my 94 had coils and not the torsion bar. But it still gets me places.

That old 3.4 is incredibly reliable, wish toyota still made non interference engines again.
Boostang why does it somehow magically make it more reliable?
@Militant 541 Timing chains break and slip and destroy engines all the time...
@Militant 541 The toyota 22R and 22RE were notorious for timing chain problems.

Marc Pikas What capable 4x4 SUV is under 3000 lbs? Lol The new Taco will destroy the old one off road, despite being a bit heavier.
The frontier is a great deal
Elevated if it’s heavier then it’s not good in mud
you mean under 4000lbs? under 3000 is very small car territory. My 02 tacoma is around 4000
The only issue I have with this and newer trucks, is they are to big for what I need. I miss the days of small / mini trucks.

94 taco? Pretty sure 95 was the first Tacoma year.
A real pickup in my opinion has to be stiff so you can feel the road that you're driving that's the real fun if I want a smooth and quiet ride I get Cadillac
Both are cool trucks! I'd be happy to have either!
Have had many trucks these you just can't beat them
That sounds like a perfect set up, especially with that 3inch OME lift. Do you got a picture?
Jason Taalen how could I send it to you picture
Just installed the OME/881s on my truck. Huge improvement over stock! Next thing is to install the Dakar leaf pack.
azorianification I used ome leaves on rear, I used ome one 06 lj rubicon, 85 4 runner, 3rd gen 4r, and my current 02 TRD, I'm 58 and made and used them all OME is all I use now,
Jason Taalen my profile picture
Where in Seattle Washington was this filmed? I would love to take my Tacoma to this area someday.
You didn’t even do any tests??
Loved my 1st gen, love my 3rd gen. Toyota just knows what's up
I luv my 97 taco. The only complaint is i have to get out and lock the hubs
My first Tacoma was a 2017 SR. I did like the ride quality but I recently sold it and got a 04 Tacoma and luv it even more ….
Not too fair of a comparision, ones a standard Tacoma, the other has the TRD package.
Nice video man 👍, I live in the Great Northwest as well. I love Tacoma's, I have a 2010 tacoma TRD off-road, it would have been sweet to have the 2nd gen in there as well.
Have the same 98 Tacoma with a manual transmission
Ive owned several 1999 to 2004 Tacoma trucks, they are PERFECT sized... When I run the miles up too high, I look around for something under 150K and buy that one... They are getting harder to find... I hope someone else will make a good reliable "SMALL" truck. Im not interested in the GIANT Tacoma.
My 1999, I bought new in December 1998, now has 336,000 miles, and still all original. Best $26,000 I ever spent,,,,
On head room-possibly I’m just too used to my F150 but when I went to test drive a Tacoma it felt incredibly cramp to just get into and my seating position had my head practically touching the headliner.
Typically moon roofs take away headroom, unless you are driving with it open and your head partially through it haha
I was waiting for some offroading
What's cool is that they still make Tacomas with manual transmission.
1st gen all day
Great video I have a 2003 best truck I ever had v Fernandez Long Island
I had a 97 in same trim that I bought new in late 1996. Loved that truck. I think I paid around $24K when new.
holy shit thats a lot of $. you must have gotten the high trim model.
Dale Couture you can get the TRD OR and TRD Sport in Double Cab Short Bed with the 6 speed Manual.
I have a 97 just like this one. Its fenominal
I also own 4 Fords so my yard looks like a used car lot, what can I say it's a mechanic thing.
mrgearheadfromhell You are a lucky guy!
89 is third gen
I have one toyota tacoma 1999 4x4 sr5 5 speed very nice truck...
My 97 has 320k and still runs perfectly well. No need for a new one
huh neat the new Tacoma runs the same size i run on my 2005 Dodge Dakota, 265/70r16s stock would be 245 for me, that little bit taller tires definitely helps clearance without a lift
Thanks for stating the obvious, time well spent.
Glad to see offroading in the PNW. Sick of seeing truck in the desert.
@autoblog I'd be curious to know if you tracked the mileage on this trip and how that compared.
How is the chainsaw mounted in the bed of the first gen?
In the Pro trim the new truck can tow at least 6400lbs. And the heart of this truck is not the shocks. It’s the drivetrain and overall build quality. The Fox shocks are ok. But let’s not make them out to be more than they are.
Get all-pro offroad front adjustable coil overs and disconnect the front sway bar and air down the tires offroad!
Amazing that the older Taco keeps up with an outfitted TRD Taco just fine! Even though I don't think it seems like a fair fight on paper. Why not outfit a new Taco to be as close as the older one and see what happens
I had 1988 Toyota brand new $12500 and that truck took some serious abuse and just laughed but my 2016 is way more comfortable for every day driving.
Why do you buy a truck? For comfort? Then buy a cadillac. Want it to work? Keep the pickup with a bullet proof 22r or 22re.
@@lassaut6794 I would buy a used truck for small time work, and small time off reading, and buy an Accord pre 2008 for regular commuting. Commuting in a truck which uses more gas and lower resale value is just beyond me.
Does anyone know what rear bumper he has on the 1st gen! First gen gang all the way! #3rzon33s
I have a 2017 TRD pro and really really want to add a first gen to my garage as well, because why not have both
New Tacoma is a truck that’s gonna last forever new Tacoma are nice but noting but flash
What’s you lift is on your first gen truck
1st gen is the most capable of the bunch. Highest ground clearance, shortest wheel base, lightest, power to weight, ease of repair, the list goes on.
Taco vs Taco. There isn't a looser
Yourmomisbomb007 💪
Except you...loser!
pygmywarrior3 👍🏻 Real mature
My 98 tacoma is super reliable. mpg is great
