My son is 15 months old. When he was a little baby we had a spinning mobile that attached to his crib, lit up, and played 100 or so music box-style tunes. This one played early on, and I recognized it, or at least recognized that I knew it from somewhere. I figured it out within at the most a couple weeks.
Ever since that time, I find myself returning to it again and again. It destroys me every time; I quickly begin weeping when I really attend to it. There is something profoundly magical in this music to me. It seems so pregnant with both a kind of nostalgia for the simplicity, innocence, and wonder of childhood, and a kind of sorrow for the inevitable passage of time--which sweeps (or "spirits") us ever away from every blessed moment of beauty and love we experience, no matter how greatly we desire to stay in them and savor them.
It could be all that, but it could also be that the song just reminds me of the baby who came along and stole his father's heart, who keeps growing and growing and leaving the baby behind. Maybe I go back to it again and again to remind myself, again and again, that there is never "enough" time. There is only now, though I could live a lifetime of blessedness in every laugh and smile.
That's a very beautiful and profound post. It has made my throat close up and then tears. Thank you. I understand exactly what you mean. It is music which reaches deep inside and it's nostalgia and regret and gratitude and a sense of ineffable loss. Loss of time. Loss of opportunities. Loss of youth. And the sadness and the joy of watching your children grow up and away and the knowing that you've lost your place as the most important person in their life. Inevitable. I can't sleep without listing to a music box it's like it wipes out all my worries.

I had a little boombox that went with one of my dolls and it played a song that sounded just like this. I dont think it's the same song, but the beginning is exactly the same. I havent seen the boombox in years and I just stumbled across this version and Im crying. Thank you
