I bought my 2000 Avalon XLS new in 1999. It presently has 317,000 miles. The first 200,000 were highway miles. No problems with engine or transmission. It still has the original muffler and exhaust system. Awesome vehicle!
I just bought a 2009 Avalon with 196K miles on it. I bought it from the Toyota dealer who showed me records that it had been serviced every 5000 miles. So fingers crossed this is a good one.
Actually, the Avalon is "worth its weight in gold" when bought *BRAND NEW.* However, when you're looking at used cars, the equivalvent Lexus, the *ES 350,* is a much better buy, because it depreciates much more (being a luxury car), and the _price difference_ is not nearly as signficant (very small actually), compared to when these cars were new!
It’s not a mystery that Avalon’s last so long. The average owner is 65+ years old. My dad bought an 07 Limited with 40k miles a year ago. Totally underrated, under appreciated luxury cars.

I have a 2004 Toyota Avalon that in my opinion is the best car I’ve ever owned. Reliable, peppy, roomy, handles well, great visibility, good on gas, excellent ride, giant trunk. If you can find a 2003-2004 low milage one I guarantee you will love it. It’s basically a Lexus with Toyota badging. Because they have some age on them you can get one for a good price. Well worth your time to find one.
Great timing! Just bought a low mileage, 2011 Avalon, one owner car from 70 year old gentleman who took great care of it. Heck, the guy even customized the front grill. I like it better than the original...
My husband and I purchased a 2012 Toyota Avalon two weeks ago with 39,231 miles from our long time mechanic's nephew who is also a mechanic. I have owned Camry's and Honda Accords in the past and the Avalon is so smooth and comfortable.

I have a 2006 Avalon! Great car 😁 If you're looking to purchase one from 2005 to 2009(sometimes 2010) Check to see if it has the combination rubber and metal rear bank VVTi oil line, it has a possibility of bursting causing your engine to lose all of it's oil. The procedure to replace the old combo rubber/metal line with the full metal oil line is not too bad of a job. But just something to look out for if you're looking at an Avalon from those years 🙂 UPDATE: An issue that can happen to the Avalons (or any Toyota vehicle using the U151E transaxle) is that solenoids that control the 2-3 shift go bad, resulting in bump shifting or flaring. In my case, the transmission would shift sluggishly between 2 and 3, and I assumed it was because of the mileage on the transmission; it otherwise operated fine, and I drained and filled the transmission fluid every spring. But as it turns out, it eventually wore out the 2-3 clutch packs to the point where I would get slippage at higher RPM, and it was shedding metal in the transmission fluid. I was able to replace the valve body in the transmission and baby it for another 2.7k miles, at which point it was still very drivable, but I am putting in a used transmission now with 110k. The original transmission lasted for 215k miles
Cool tip, I'm looking for a clean 2011/12 with low mileage. Primarily from the retirement States like Florida, Arizona, and California where you know they were garaged.

I have the Aussie version of the Avalon...the Toyota Aurion, smooth 3.5 VVTI V6. Bought it with 45,000 km and will keep for 20 years at least with just minor maintenance. Good video Scotty
I loved it when he said he called the Toyota dealership himself and got a replacement because they knew who Scotty is... Hell yeahhh!!! All the world knows who Scotty is!!
Have my 2002 Avalon pass down by my mom-orig owner, with 169k miles. No sludge, no vvti oil control valve issues. It really has been good Brakes did feel weird to me, but used some EBC brake rotors and I think it feels better at braking, or its in my head, idk. Great car for sure. Got a video on my ch. when I put the white wall tires on.

I have a 2000 Avalon vxi which is the aus model based off of the 90s US ones, it’s got 300000 and still runs great, the elderly man that owned it before me took such good care of it so I’m trying to continue his legacy
Remember the old nylon tires? My dad always bought his snowtires at Sears, nylon type. On cold mornings you could feel the flat spot until it warmed up.
Please go to your Device Manager and turn off the power management setting for the device so it stops putting what ever usb device you have connected to sleep.
I got an Avalon limited in 05 the first year of the new body style and I still have it with 280k miles on it and it’s in perfect shape with just oil changes
How do I know if mine has a recall?? I believe I looked mine up by the vin and it said it doesn't have any open recalls. Any info would be immensely appreciated.
My dad has a 07 avalon almost 300,000 miles loves it, drives almost 200 miles s day to and from work. He's had it about 6 years no issues besides norm. Maintenance

I've got a 2007 Toyota Avalon Touring.. 230,000 miles...I picked it up to make a trip to Calif., because RENTING a car was just too expensive..soo, just got back from driving to NM, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, California, etc... seamless..good power, and good gas mileage. Not one drop of oil used.. amazing.. I am going to use it as my daily driver..
My new advice for anyone purchasing a used car is to completely remove the rear seat and perhaps the front seats to really clean up everything underneath there. After that I recommend running an ozonolysis machine inside the cabin for half hour. I'm looking for my new purchase just to do that ...
Great timing i just bought a 96 grand cherokee that's been sitting for a year. Battery is weak and i noticed tires definitely have the stretched out fiber shape. That's for the tips Scotty will apply it to my check up of the cherokee
The old 3.0 liter V6 engine in the Avalon uses a timing belt - something to avoid. Also, the valve cover gaskets leak, and knock sensors go out when they get old - think early 2000s Avalons.
Scotty, I bought my 2009 Avalon because i fit in it. I am 6'5" . I wanted a Camry but didn't fit behind the steering wheel. To me the main differeces between the 2 models is size and ride. The Avalon rides as nice as the Lexus ES350 in my opinion. The only part replaced in the first 131,000 miles was the steering rack. There was fluid showing on the bottom of the rack and seemed to be working okay but I was planning a 1500 mile drive and think that steering is as important as braking. i am looking forward to another 130,000+ miles of driving in comfort.
best advice i ever got when i got my first motorcycle (at age 18, cuz i would not defy my mother) was get a sub 250 rice grinder. so i bought a honda 250 twinstar. best bike i ever had. great, easy handling and tolerant of my rookie mistakes. the ct90'ish step throughs are fun too. i've ridden bmw's for well over 30 years now, but only buy the old ones. you learn to keep your head on a swivel, and learn the basics. educate yourself, and you'll mostly be ok. you can't control everything though.
I can't say enough good things about Toyota Avalon. I was told at the Toyota dealership that the V6 engine was a Lexus design that they put in the Avalon first before moving it to the Lexus models. I bought a 2001 brand new for a little over $30,000 and put 325,838 miles on it (a little over 9 cents a mile on the purchase price). Sold it this year (2020) for $2500. Did have the transmission replaced at 260,000 miles with a used one having 60,000 miles on it for a little over $2000. Other than brakes, tires, and a few sensors there were very few other major repairs (ignition did fail at about 200,00 and had to be replaced at a cost of about $800). When I sold the car the heated leather seats still worked and it basically drives and rides almost as good as when it was new. If you are buying an older one check to make sure the timing belt has been replaced and verify at what mileage as the engine is an interference design that has a bad failure mode if the timing belt happens to snap. I never had this problem replaced the timing belt once in 2011 and still running well when I sold it.
I have a 1999 Avalon I bought with 220000 miles. Almost No oil use. The V6 accelerates with nearly the power of a new Camry. Gets respect on the 80mph Sprawl tollways. Smaller than it looks (or bigger?). And I owned Hondas before. Worth whatever you put into it. Toyota rules.
The Avalon is one of the best deals. Either new or used, they all are nice. The Chevy Impala is another great deal, but have electronic issues with the higher mileage.
Had a '83 Honda CB1100F - one of the first Superbikes. A great bike but the starter motor clutch springs often weakened and failed which caused the starter to disengage (not turn/start)... I had to go to the local supermarket on a few occasions and buy BIC pens so I could take the springs out and install them in the starter clutch so I could get the bike to start up, LOL [insert your choice of the obligatory Scotty laughing animal picture here]. Of course, the pen springs weren't made of the same material as the OEM starter springs, but it did work for a few days.
I highly recommend a Avalon I bought a 2013 Limited FULLY FULLY LOADED in 2016 one owner 25k miles and now i have 103k and i never had not 1 issue , not even a recall, dealership maintenance every 6/7 k miles FABULOUS CAR , I STILL LOVE IT
If you have kids and a decent car, get a portable battery powered shop vac, like ryobi's small 18volt one. Get home, pop a battery in it, carry it out, vacuum food up in the car in 5 minutes, go back inside. Time saver and easy and light to use.
I use peppermint oil on cotton balls , spread them around garage and car, even inside the car if needed. Works inside house too. I always keep peppermint oil
We just totaled our 2009 Nissan Versa 1.6 with the 5 speed manual. The insurance company is giving us nearly $6000 for it. The 5 spd manuals are definitely worth more both in driving value and actual monetary value. Had close to 100k on it and we had zero problems other than routine maintenance. We replaced it with an Avalon. lol
Having just bought a 1997 Saab 9000 2.3 turbo with 175,000 miles for £1200 that starts first time and runs like a dream with its leather and walnut dash luxury i will never go new again.
my BIL said the same thing about the Avalon. It’s the highest end trim pkg. Toyota offers (basically a Lexus). If you can find a 2 y/o lease return with 30K miles or less in good-great condition - buy it. Best $27,000 you can spend on a used car.
I had a problem with mice eating my wiring so bad that the car ( Avalon ) wouldn’t start, had it taken to my dealer where they patched up the harness and everything worked fines and I moved over 110 miles south to a subdivision (I was originally in heavily woody subdivision ) ,so I go out one day and nothing when I press start ! , I have it trucked to the dealer again- more mice and worse than the first time ! , the service manager convinced me to replace the whole a wiring harness because it was all sealed up and the patched up one was giving off a smell that drew the mice, replaced the whole thing (over $2500)and got my insurance company to pay for it ! Loved that guy ! , worked like a new one until I ran over a suicidal Mexican one night and totaled it
My first ever motorcycle and I mean 0 miles driven one was a gsxr 600 and I was able to take off no problem the first time. I respected the power of the machine and never had a problem. Just takes some common sense.
OMG, Scotty...I thought my computer was getting hacked from the connect and disconnect sound coming from your video. I even went into command prompt to see who was connecting to my computer (netstat -n)
Not related to your video Scotty. But I thought that sound was coming from my laptop, lol! That's the sound when you disconnect your device. Had me checking mine because I had my phone connected while I was watching your clip.
Mice got to my Tacoma. They ate through most of the wires to the wiper motor, but left one that carried power so I was fooled. It was only after buying a new wiper motor and stalk that I finally found the real problem. Another thing I did was install battery maintainers in both my vehicles. I got the kind that mounts permanently and installed an AC power inlet so I don't even have to open the hood. Almost hated to do it, but I just drilled a hole in the plastic skirt under the front bumper in front of the wheel. I just plug it in overnight once every week or two.
If you are buying a new car off a lot in the south check the tires. Pay attention during the test drive if it is a previous year model because that high heat and the short few months of cold will really mess with the tires if it was rarely test driven. Look at that odometer.

Scotty, you helped me get rid of my Nissan Altima (blown gasket), and get a used Honda Civic and I love it. Thanks for all you do.
I also have a used civic, I love it. Very good daily.
i had a nissan sentra and my head gasket blew as well i got rid of it and got myself a used civic as well great cars

23 mins and already 10 thumbs down. I bet there are people that sub just to crap on scotty. Seriously, why would you hate a man thats here just to help you? He has personally answered 3 questions of mine, out of the millions of subs he has. If thats not dedication I dont know what is. If you don't like scotty, you arent a car guy.
I have a 2000 Avalon vxi which is the aus model based off of the 90s US ones, it’s got 300000 and still runs great, the elderly man that owned it before me took such good care of it so I’m trying to continue his legacy

If Scotty dosen't know Toyota is intentionally misspelled by the Toyoda family, he's been making to many videos.

Did your 05 ever have any oil leaks??
@@koryl7047 yes, it had a recall for that a while back

Gotta keep my 👀 out for a used Avalon....Always liked their styling
Spent the whole video trying to figure out why my iPad wasn’t charging only to find out it was Scotty’s video. There’s 10:11 of my life gone.

I like scotty so much, I watched the whole video without complaining to myself about the noise 😏, much respect scotty thank you for your amazing videos
I love my 2019 Toyota Avalon Touring. Has best of XSE and Limited models. The perfect balance of sportiness and extra luxury in the interior.
My new advice for anyone purchasing a used car is to completely remove the rear seat and perhaps the front seats to really clean up everything underneath there. After that I recommend running an ozonolysis machine inside the cabin for half hour. I'm looking for my new purchase just to do that ...
How was it?
Great timing i just bought a 96 grand cherokee that's been sitting for a year. Battery is weak and i noticed tires definitely have the stretched out fiber shape. That's for the tips Scotty will apply it to my check up of the cherokee
The old 3.0 liter V6 engine in the Avalon uses a timing belt - something to avoid. Also, the valve cover gaskets leak, and knock sensors go out when they get old - think early 2000s Avalons.
The 3.0 are non interference engines if the belt breaks doesn’t hurt engine.
I purchased a 2013 Avelon new I like the newest version but my ride is paid for and reliable it looks great.
There was fluid showing on the bottom of the rack and seemed to be working okay but I was planning a 1500 mile drive and think that steering is as important as braking. i am looking forward to another 130,000+ miles of driving in comfort.
im 6'6"
Hello does yours have the vvti rattle? Im considering buying one soon
Good tips Scotty, I work on an offshore oil rig, 28 days on and 28 days off. My f150 sits for a month at a time.
The background notifications of Toyota Tacoma torque converters failing that Scotty won't talk about are a nice touch to the video. 🤣
best advice i ever got when i got my first motorcycle (at age 18, cuz i would not defy my mother) was get a sub 250 rice grinder. so i bought a honda 250 twinstar. best bike i ever had. great, easy handling and tolerant of my rookie mistakes. the ct90'ish step throughs are fun too. i've ridden bmw's for well over 30 years now, but only buy the old ones.
you learn to keep your head on a swivel, and learn the basics. educate yourself, and you'll mostly be ok. you can't control everything though.
Timing chain you mean😇

How trustworthy are those carfaxes?
Glad I checked the comments. I was kind of confused at the Windows computer sounds coming out of my Mac.
Avalons are getting love!
Mine is a avolon 2001 looks new with 118,000 miles. Garage kept.
Sun roof. Runs quiet.
Just bragging scotty.

The Avalon is one of the best deals. Either new or used, they all are nice. The Chevy Impala is another great deal, but have electronic issues with the higher mileage.

Thanks for telling me my Mom's transmission is bad. Wouldve been nice to know when I bought it 9 years ago.
Hell yeah I just got my 2007 Avalon 💪🏼❤️🔥

Ever crank up your car and have a cat sleeping inside the cowl of the radiator? It doesn’t kill them due to the fan clutch, but it does spank them!!!
My neighbor had a dodge ram and it somehow killed it
If you have kids and a decent car, get a portable battery powered shop vac, like ryobi's small 18volt one.

Last year I picked up a mint 2010 Avalon XLS with 48 K . I have 62K now and it’s been an awesome car !!! Money 💴 well spent !!!

I had a problem with mice eating my wiring so bad that the car ( Avalon ) wouldn’t start, had it taken to my dealer where they patched up the harness and everything worked fines and I moved over 110 miles south to a subdivision (I was originally in heavily woody subdivision ) ,so I go out one day and nothing when I press start ! , I have it trucked to the dealer again- more mice and worse than the first time ! , the service manager convinced me to replace the whole a
wiring harness because it was all sealed up and the patched up one was giving off a smell that drew the mice, replaced the whole thing (over $2500)and got my insurance company to pay for it ! Loved that guy ! , worked like a new one until I ran over a suicidal Mexican one night and totaled it
My 2009 Avalon was a great car. I’d be driving it today if it hadn’t totaled in an accident.

I have a Toyota Echo, 2001. It's perfect for short commute. Love my Tacoma, but it's too nice to take most places I go.
