    Hi Tom, the cable Tecsun sent you had a stereo plug on it. Try a cable with mono plugs. I know that when I used a stereo plug in a radio one time it didn`t work. The internal contact surfaces in the radio jack and the plug don`t line up.

    Tom ! The loop antenna works best when you have it side by side with radio so in essence you have to pull the radio out of the corner and place it along the right side of the radio and then tune it it works great with my radios good video !

    I would use a good rf cable with good shielding between the radio and loop so you can get the best nulls.

    I have that antenna and use it with a small radio (Tecsun PL-360). Works very well, a little better than the little external ferrite that comes with the radio. Both together work very well (just parking it very close to an AM radio does work, so well I quit fiddling with the cable at all. You want a mono audio cable, not stereo :). It'll make a radio with a poor AM antenna receive much better. But that Grundig already has an excellent antenna, you probably won't improve on it much.
    Always love the show, keep 'em up.

    To compare cables (supplied vs ur audio) u could use an ohmeter to check continuity. U have a 3 connector plug ending in 2 open wires -- so an ohmeter cud tell if one of the plug connectors is a dummy for ur circuit. Then it wud be nice to know what 2 connectors are the ones which shud be active on the radio & does ur audio cable feed the right outputs.

    I use this loop passively (no direct wire connection) with my Panasonic RF-2200, which also has a rotating ferrite rod antenna like your Grundig. I first tune the ferrite for the best signal from a weak station then move the loop into a position about an inch away from the end of the ferrite and 90 degrees to it. Then, by adjusting the loop's tuning dial I get a really significant signal bounce that shows up on the radio's signal strength meter and produces much better audio reception. The loop dial adjustment is extremely sensitive, so you have to use a safe-cracker's hand, but it really does work well.
    Other radios may react differently and may require a different procedure, but experiment a lot and don't give up.

    Hector Plasmic is right about the mono audio cable, not stereo. That is what I use. And tuning 530 kHz is all the way counterclockwise and 1710 kHz. every time change stations on your radio you have to tune the antenna. Keep trying you'll get used to it.

    They say you have to position the loop antenna perpendicular to the built- in ferrite of your Grundig desktop radio. Your loop is way far from your radio.

  • @fineoutrick9789
    @fineoutrick9789 5 років тому

    I am seeing this long after, but I've head three AM loop antennas. THey need to be inductively linked (by close proximity) to the radio's antenna (usually the ferrite rod inside--in the case of the Grundig Satellite 800, it's on the side). They work very well and produce a marked peak at "Q". If you've plugged your loop antenna in, it may not disconnect an external antenna, whose strength of signal may obviate much of what the loop does: pea/null signals and ameliorate noise. They truly do work well.

    I’m thinking about getting one of these antennas for... my wrist watch. I have a Casio Protrek PRW3000 and it has atomic time keeping in it but being in Australia I can only get the Japan signals if conditions are perfect. I have seen some people trying to make loop antennas for the watch and placing the watch in the loop but I think getting one of these would be best because if it doesn’t work for the watch it will work for my PL660 :) And once again Tom, nice video!

    This loop works exceptionally well with a direct connection to the Tecsun PL-330 on AM. It actually gets a much cleaner signal than my CCrane EP PRO and Sangean PR-D4W at night on target stations. It turns the PL-330 into a DX monster! I can`t wait to move to try some AM external antenna experiments with the 330. I made a 4 ft loop from a solar panel box to get the lower AM band so I can get a strong signal on 870 WWL New Orleans. I plan to modify some larger loops for a direct connection.

    For portable radios with built-in "AM ferrite loopstick antennas" no connection needed. It is done by placing the radio beside the loop, experiment with orientation, and "mutual coupling" will occur. The entire radio and antenna can be moved to best capture the radio station you desire. But most stereo receivers and tuners lack the ferrite loopstick, so a wired connection is necessary. The wire hamrad88 shows would be used to connect the antenna to the AM and Ground terminals. Only the sleeve and tip of the connector are used, so a mono plug can be used for the antenna. That plug is a 3.5 mm aka 1/8". But as hamrad88 did, you can use either a mono or stereo 1/8" (3.5 mm) audio cable for radios with the AM jack. On Amazon I found some neat 3.5 plug that have a green block on back and screw terminals. I bought these, quite inexpensive, and used 22 ga stranded insulated hookup wire. I just twisted them together. The larger wire gave a better bite from the terminals on my stereo gear. The plugs are listed as PL-CN11-2 (2/pkg) or PL-C11-5 (5/pkg) sold by CablesOnline.

    Hello Tom,
    Just a suggestion, on your shortwave radios that do not have an external antenna jack, try plugging your G5RV into the loop and place it next to the radio and tune it. Medium wave should come in better. In reality you could use your Grundig anyway and plug the jack plug into it. I would like to see how that works. All the best.

    • @hamrad88
      @hamrad88  9 років тому +2

      +mike leone Thanks for the suggestion. I will have to make an adapter cable but the idea is not to have an outside antenna (many people can not install outside antennas.)

      @mikele5756 9 років тому

      I understand completely. For those people that do have an external antenna and want better medium wave reception on their portable radios, this is a good option. You can use the same adapter hooked to your G5RV that you plug into your portables to receive shortwave. I would really like to see if this works for you. I am using a similar setup for my Tecsun pl-660. Take care.

    Hi Tom,
    The AN-200 is a nicely designed "portable" loop but it is rather meant to be used with a portable radio. The best results are obtained with the radio INSIDE the loop. Try it with your PL 880 on a weak daytime station. Once rotated in the right direction and finely tuned, you will be amazed !
    I have a homemade mini-loop about the same size that I use with my PL 880 and I think I will get some transatlantic DX when conditions improve a little bit, with only that minimalistic equipment !
    The only thing I don't like about the AN-200 is that you cannot lay the radio flat inside the loop. You have to hold it all the time ;-))

    U may well have gotten different effects by tilting the antenna off of the vertical. I have no idea what the impedance of the audio connectors is nor of the audio cable. My guess is that the shorter the better on that cable. But it is a shame if we don't know the impedance of the loop, the connectors, the cable, & the radio input circuit -- these impedances shud all match. Also, if u are changing from balance to unbalanced signal at some point, I think u would need a balun at that point. IMHO a loop is intrinsically balanced, but coax cable is for unbalanced & grounded shield signal.

    Why would there be a station on 575 kHz? Surely that would be either 570 or 580 kHz (or 576 kHz if you're in 9 kHz spacing territory).
    The stereo plug has me a bit baffled. You only need 2 conductors.
    A desktop radio with external antenna connection will be better served by a more proper antenna, locate outside away from electrical noise generators.
    In my opinion, the best way to use a loop antenna that size is with a portable, probably not connected by wire. And somewhere out in the field away from the RFI of civilization.
    Place the radio close to (or inside of) the loop, make sure the internal ferrite bar antenna is aligned in the same direction as the loop, otherwise nulling ability will be compromised.
    Adjust the tuning knob on the loop to peak the tuned frequency on the radio, then rotate the loop and radio together to either null out noise (if it's coming from only one direction) or to null out an unwanted station to hear another one coming in from a different direction. Keep in mind that the null is pretty sharp, and the the radio/loop hast to be rotated "just so" to get the maximum effect.
    I use a radio shack 15-1853, which is of the same class as this AN-200. I use it with a sony SRF-M37V Walkman rubber banded inside the loop. It works great that way. (See mesamike.org/radio/SRF-M37V/m37v-loop.jpg)

    Do you have a CCRadio? I have two different types.They’re still in production and have 2 AM external screws on the back of the radio. To top the loop antenna get yourself a Twin Coil Ferrite antenna. Then go and get a long paint roller handle with wooden extension. Remove the roller assembly and discard it. Size and cut a piece of plywood to fit inside the frame of the paint roller. Drill holes along the sides of the plywood and zip tie plywood inside the paint roller frame. Measure mounting screws from Twin Coil Ferrite antenna and mount it inside the paint roller frame on the plywood. Get an old standing lamp and remove everything electrical about it. Insert the assembled antenna handle inside the neck of the standing lamp. NEVER TURN THE ANTENNA MORE THAN A QUARTER TURN. It should be enough.

    If you are in the America’s, there’s nothing on 585 and 575 kHz, Stations on AM are 10kHz spaced, elswhere in the world AM on lw and mw are 9kHz apart. I have this combination too. You need to tune the antenna with much more accuracy. And rotate it likewise. For this purpose I have the PL-880 and the AN-200 placed on a small plastic turntable. The AN-200 is a perfect little gem but as I said, you need to be much more accurate tuning and turning it. Greetings from Hekelinge, Holland. Willem.

    You doing it wrong. The ring meed to be centered at the end (sitting parrallel to end as if you were going to pass end of radio throug it) or set perpendicular in back center of radio (sideways to radio such that from front you don't see loop). Sais differently needs I be aligned with the ferrite bar. I have one, it is indespensible. Half the stations, actually more, I would never pick up without it. The tuner numbers are frequencies! They arn't random numbers! The slightest tiny bit on that dial csn make huge dif. Connecting it is relatively useless compared to just using it passively. I almost never connect mine. I hsve same radio you do except "called" Eton 750.
