"Studying languages profoundly improves the experience of life" - that is so, so true. Without English, I wouldn't have even known this phrase existed (at least, without watching and understanding this video today).

I'm glad you liked this! I always love how we can create such powerful messages in so many ways with just a few simple words arranged in any number of ways. I especially love how when you embrace other languages, the abundance of these simple but powerful phrases becomes essentially infinite 🔥

I really needed to hear this today, I study Italian because it's my heritage and it makes me so happy, the joy I feel when I can understand Italian content is beyond words, I may never have the chance to go to Italy, but they joy it brings to my life is immeasurable... thanks Robin

Thank you for this lovely comment, Francine! I think it's wonderful that you're studying your heritage language, and I totally understand that joy you describe that is indeed beyond words. I truly hope you one day get the chance to go to Italy, but I also think it's great that you're able to embrace the immeasurable joy that languages can bring to our lives no matter where we are. I think this is even more powerful, the fact that the Italian language has the ability to bring Italy to you, no matter where you are. Wishing you the best of luck!

It's so hard to stay motivated when you're struggling with depression. I havent been studying as hard as I usually do and it's even more unmotivating. Even though I listen to Korean everyday, I do miss fully investing myself in the language

I'm sorry to read that you're struggling with depression, Mandy. I know this may not fully solve things but please do feel free to write anything you are willing to share about your experience here and maybe we can find a way to bring back that spark into your daily life with your language study. As I mentioned to another commenter, I am so incredibly fortunate to have an army of wonderful supporters who are kind souls and I'm sure some of them will chime in to help you as well 💪🏼

Oh Mandy :/ I don't have a clue of what you've been going through, but know a thing, it's impossible to make big changes without struggling, some people do have to face more walls than others, but I guarantee, it'll be worth it, and one day you're gonna look back on every day you weren't feeling like studying but you did anyway and say, ''I'm happy I didn't give up" I know we don't know anything that's been happening in your life, but please, don't give up for you, just the act of keeping on going is already a proof of how much you wanna do it, I'm sure a lot of people would have already given up.

Thank you Robin!I love your videos in general. They inspire us language learners and allow us to use new methods.
Not worrying about the details is a very good strategy. When it comes to learning through podcasts I do the same. I try to focus on the gist. I try not to become overwhelmed by the unknown words. One tip is to put some book marks while listening to a podcast and have a closer look at it later.
"Studying languages profoundly improves the experience of life!" YEEEEES it does! For me too!!! I love it!

Love your energy and enthusiasm! And I relate, it’s such a buzz to learn a language! I get and do Greek listening to Pimsleur in the shower, then later do a Duolingo session on Italian and then study a Greek script I’ve written for my next italki lesson. Later a session on a French novel I’m reading for the Journaly book club you are starting soon. I find it really helps to be part of an active community of learners, last year I did a FluentIn3Months language challenge and joined the alumni community when it ended and many of us post there every day to say what language studying we’ve done that day - which I love doing - it’s very motivating!

Hey Robin, I’m currently playing your most recent ‘week in the life’ video as my background while I study today. So, you’re right here with me it seems. It’s fortuitous that you popped in today to share this video. I awoke exactly the same way, ready to go and looking forward to language practice. I sprang out of bed and spent some time with a Danish novel that I’m slowly working my way through and had a thirty minute French conversation about literature. Writing has fallen by the wayside of late, but I’m hoping to re-engage with the Journaly community soon. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, my friend!

I absolutely CAN. NOT. WAIT. to start the book club soon as soon!
Please feel free to re-engage with the Journaly community only when you're ready. You set such a wonderful tone early on and it's so nice to think about how you and the Alpha gang planted the seeds of the wonderful community that is blossoming on the platform today. I can't wait to see you back writing again, but please do take as much time as you need. Have a wonderful new week ahead, my friend!

I don't know what it is about your videos, but every time I watch one I'm filled with this wonderful belief and determination that I can actually learn another language. That feeling alone has already managed to brighten up my life, when previously everything had been a bit darker.
That said I did need a motivational kick this weekend, as after the excitement of my target language books arriving, I realised my vocabulary is not at the point I thought it was. I also picked books I'd already read in English; which has slightly backfired as I'm struggling not to project the knowledge/sentences I remember onto the page. So I end up mentally reciting the English version from memory, rather than actually reading and understanding the words on the page.

    • @RobinMacPhersonFilms
      @RobinMacPhersonFilms  3 роки тому

I'm so glad that my videos have this effect on you, Ana! Honestly, I could not hope for a better outcome from watching my content! 😄 I can relate to your feeling - language learning is definitely a constant opportunity for being humbled and it often reminds us of where we are vs. where we thought we were. Keep going, though! I often find myself jumping into a piece of content that is very ambitious for my current level, and then going back to something a bit easier. I always find that even though it might feel like the ambitious content was too hard and not very fruitful at that moment, I still learned an emormous amount through trying my best with it anyway. I hope this is your experience as well!

I'm a beginner who's trying to study multiple languages.
I learned English at a slow pace starting around 11 years old (I'm 25 now and I still try to be open to new things I can learn about this language.)
I'm on my 16th month learning German, which goes pretty good due to my native language being Dutch.
I'm getting better at reading/listening to Spanish and Portuguese and still at a very low level in Chinese, Italian, Norwegian and French. 😅
My main focuses are German and Portuguese whilst doing a few excersises for the other languages (except French).

Language learning has brought up a lot of deeper pains around studying and all anxieties around it (Very DARK traumatising childhood experiences), which is something you don't expect. One of the things that crossed my wires a lot was "learning the right way" -- part of that came from the fear of reliving my childhood where I was TAUGHT incorrectly then punished severely for not being able to learn the thing that was wrong. Any whoo. Much of my suffering in my LL Journey has been the desperate search to find a "method" or structured system I could trust to guide me. When I had too much time I was way more stressed spending hours a day practicing and re working my learning method, Now I have almost no time so I can only listen to a podcast and absorb it, repeat vocab but no time or energy for deep intensive study.
I had about 7 mins in the car today. It made me so happy. Because I love the sound of Russian so dearly that even if I have no idea what they are saying (Although I did get the broad strokes, and it was classified as Upper Intermediate) and m not Memorising, 20 words a day in context, with multiple different declensions blah blah blah... I just get pure eargasms and am happy because Its like music to my ears.
I actually Hope I spend a few more months in this zone... even if it means I would be reach A2 level in 6 months hehe

I feel like I always ask myself to do too much when it comes to languages, and sometimes I feel peer pressured when I listen to all the people who are further down the road. But then I remind myself that it is my journey and that I am allowed to just have fun with it. I also made the decision to start slow, and use different ways to approach different languages. For some of the languages, I want to complete the Duo Lingo app first (Chinese and Arabic) before looking at books, TTIK (just to familiarize myself with the Korean script), a video lesson course for Italian, and French is kind of all over the place. It is a hobby, and I need to treat it as such.

I totally agree. There's nothing quite like that ambient noise you get in a coffee shop with the espresso machine running, cups and saucers clanging together, baristas steaming milk and pulling espresso shots, and of course the murmuring of different conversations happening all around you. Also just the feeling of going somewhere and coming home afterwards. I'm feeling really optimistic but I'll get back to that place sometime this year. In the meantime, I'll be trying my best to support everyone as much as I can!
Here, things just opened up again for outdoor seating if places have that available. So I am still not able to actually go into any places, but there are one or two spots that have a few tables outside on the street with to-go service.

I'm studying Hebrew and mainly struggling with reading. I watched some youtube videos, listened to podcasts and did anki. I also read some book summaries and excerpts on an online bookstore last night. Since I struggle with reading I find it usually makes me drowsy pretty quickly. Today I made some anki cards from the words I looked up recently. I like the app reverso because I can look through my search history in a browser and easily make anki cards. I go back and forth on studying multiple languages at once. I occasionally dabble in other languages if I'm getting frustrated and bored with Hebrew, but I'm overall more efficient studying one language at a time. When I'm overwhelmed with life or really enjoying Hebrew I prefer to just stick with Hebrew.

Best wishes Robin, you seem like a bolt of energy and beam of light. Like some other listeners I have depression issues and lack real motivation. Language is a way to fill the day but it doesn’t give me nearly as much of a spark as it does you. I have trouble speaking in my own language, let alone another, though I do enjoy cracking jokes in other languages - it is fun to be able to get away with saying silly things in other languages and watch the natives light up. :-) so that’s my challenge! I envy your energy, it is good to see.

It's so cool you are studying Catalan! I don't know how far you want to take, but let me give you some tips anyways xD
First, since you already know French and have a high level in Spanish, I would tell you to make use of that knowledge! Catalan grammar (specially the standard dialect of Catalonia) shares a lot of grammar rules with both Spanish and French. For example, that thing with the passé composé where, when the object is before the verb, you have to make it match: "Voici la célébrité qu'elle a rencontrée", it's the same in Catalan: "Aquesta novel·la ja l'he llegidA" (This novel (femenin), I've already read it). However, it's also true that this is proper Catalan and a lot of people (such as myself) make the mistake of not matching the verb due to the influence of Spanish.
Also, I recommend checking out TV3 to find some content in Catalan (probably you've heard of Merlí, the TV series, which is available in the TV3 page with Catalan subtitles for people in Spain. You can get around this using a free VPN if you cannot find it anywhere legally, it should work perfectly fine, I assure you) and, specially the political satire called Polònia which is available in UA-cam (and, what's even better, they have started recently putting subtitles in every episode!). It's true that this is funnier if you are interested or know about politics and politicians in Spain and Catalonia, but hey, maybe you will like it anyways!
When it comes to UA-cam, sadly that are not that many UA-camrs that make their videos in Catalan, but maybe you should try checking out the channel Lletraferint (or something like that xD). He's a Catalan linguist student that talks about the language itself and political issues around the language. His Catalan is pretty clear, but definitely not for beginner students.
And that's basically it xD Maybe I'll come back to add a couple recommendations for some Catalan music, but this is more or less everything I have to offer XD
There's only just one last thing: the Catalan we speak in Valencia is much easier to understand for someone who speaks Spanish, so maybe try checking out À Punt (they have a channel on UA-cam) as well (Valencian Community public television) if you want something easier at first (I'm definitely not making fun of Catalans' famous heavy accent, not at all XD). I don't really watch it myself (except for the movie "La mort de Guillem" that I watched recently and that I recommend, up to a certain point), but maybe you will find something of your interest.

Thanks very much for all of these wonderful tips, Andrea! It's really interesting to read the point you made about proper Catalan and how people often speak it. It's funny because I often make the mistake in the opposite direction, where I often try to match the gender in those sentences when I'm speaking Spanish due to my experience with French.
That's also a great recommendation with TV3! I've actually never watched it directly, but there are a few things I have been wanting to see (such as the documentary "Peret - Yo Soy La Rumba") And I often see that these things were shown on TV3. I'll look into accessing it with a VPN! Oh and I'll also definitely try to check out Merlí, that's really helpful as it's often really difficult to find good TV shows.
I'd definitely love your Catalan music recommendations! So far I've been enjoying Txarango and would love to find a lot more stuff!
I'm absolutely loving it so far and personally I would like to take my Catalan to a really high level one day and hopefully even come and make some nice content in Catalonia. I would absolutely love it if one day I could spend some time creating nice content for other Catalan learners while spending time in the region :D

@@RobinMacPhersonFilms ua-cam.com/play/PLhADPHeVvBXu8XkYREEcgjTudA1tBBGs9.html Aquesta és la meua (or meva, in Catalonia) llista personal de videos en català! Els tres primers són bàsicament tota la música catalana que puc arribar a escoltar (hear), però pot ser que et siga útil per trobar (find, like the french word trouver) coses noves! No havia escoltat mai Txarango (els coneixia, però no havia escoltat ninguna cançó!), aleshores t'agraïsc que els esmentassis (that you mentioned them)!
Hope it's not too hard to understand what I've written, I translated the words I think would be harder to guess (but, since you already speak Spanish and French, I left the similar expressions without a translation!).
I hope you were able to access TV3! Thinking about other possible recomendations, I also remembered a really short miniseries that I watched a few years ago ("Ull per ull") which was pretty interesting to watch for someone who likes history (not memorable, but interesting enough).
There's also a couple of webpages that could be useful to you! www.softcatala.org/ has plenty of little tools, such a dictionary of synonyms, and salt.gva.es/es/traductor (an official webpage by the local government of the Comunitat Valenciana) can help you correct your mistakes or translate things from Spanish to Catalan and viceversa!
I wish you a lot of luck in your journey learning Catalan! Your goal is a really ambitous one, but I'm sure you will be able to achieve it! If you need some help with the webpages or have any question that I may be able to solve, don't doubt to ask! It'll be my pleasure to try and help (since I can imagine there are not that many resources to learn Catalan online)!

I am learning german and personally i believe i am super motivated to learn this language. And of course my motivation is that i am planning to move to Germany for study purpose. For me learning german is not a feeling of burden or something which i have to do because i need it but because i enjoy it very much but most importantly my main motivation/incentive is that i will be able to use it for my daily activities there. Unfortunately like many other i have been suffering from depression due to the pandemic as the whole life has become sort of a standstill. I was not able to move to Germany due to the pandemic last year which has adversely affected my motivation and determination to learn the language.
I truly enjoy learning german and i really really give my 110% to learn it but due to my depression i am not able to put in the time and effort like i used to. Still i am pushing myself in the face of depression and everything to practice my german. Recently i have started to to rewatch some of my most favourite tv series in german even if i don’t understand the whole thing. But since i already know the plot it helps me to keep up with the series. I do not know whether it will be helpful or not but still i am pushing myself and hoping for the best for the future.

    • @RobinMacPhersonFilms
      @RobinMacPhersonFilms  3 роки тому +1

Hmm, it's quite hard to say. Japanese was definitely the hardest for me to learn at the time. I have also studied Mandarin Chinese, but that is quite recent and so I had a lot more experience learning languages by then, whereas with Japanese it was the first foreign language I truly studied hard and learned to fluency, which was also when I fell in love with learning languages in general. I think perhaps Italian was my easiest experience learning a foreign language, because by then I had already learned French and Spanish, and I found that learning Italian after those was wonderfully smooth, although still a big challenge as always with an entire language. In theory you might think that Dutch or Swedish would have been even easier for me as an English speaker, but that was honestly not quite the case.

I agree that there is something wonderful and fascinating about how the brain handles everything and understands thongs 😄 I understand what you mean about "no perfection" ☺️ Thanks so much for watching all of my videos, I really appreciate all of your support! 😄🙏🏼☀️
