I think, no, I know that people show different reactions in stressful situations. Some are unable to act, they freeze. So it's realistic if someone doesn't even try to defend themselves. In this particular case, of course, it was simply the scriptwriter's idea to portray this protagonist as fragile as possible, I would say. There is a very high respect for age in Japan, but not fighting back when attacked... That would be going too far even in Japan.
