Hey Sean... I ended up pairing my Hestia with A21+. There was soooo many upgrades I did in a short period of time I can't tell you the full extent of the amp up upgrade... it replaced a mid 90s HK Signature Series 1.5. I immediately heard more bass (controlled) and better top end with mid range clarity. I added a second up-to-date power conditioner, upgraded DAC, usb digital/digital interface, multiple power cables and interconnects plus video cable upgrades. One of the big improvements for low end was properly using the features on my two active subs (LF cross over and phase). All in all pretty happy with the sound I'm getting now. One final next year piece will be a transport to replace my tired NAD CD player. But with all the above mention the big step in sound improvement was getting my two channel sound off my AV preamp and putting the Hestia in place as the hub for my two channel processing. I should have done a two channel pre a long time ago. I would have liked to have gone LTA route per your review, but just too pricey for me for all I wanted to do at this time. You are a great reviewer... thanks 👍!!!

Zero Fidelity, hi Sean. I didn’t know so I asked. Anyway, you put a smile on my face and that is always a good thing. Having you on this medium is way more fun than anyone else. People may not agree with you, but none question you genuineness or honesty. That’s why your channel grows!
Hey Sean, great video as always. Did you happen to use this combo with the Klipsch Forte IIIs? If so, how was the combo? Average, good or near perfect?
Hi Sean, which affects SQ more? Pre-amp or Amp? On the pre-amp side, could you review a few tube-based ones (prima Luna, Rogue, Modwright, Microzotl) and compare them against the Denafrips Hestia? Thks
@zerofidelity Hey Shaun, great little review but only saw this just now! You've got me interested in the Hyperion, and even the Hestia preamp too (with that pretty face of hers). Would you think the Hyperion would pair well with a tube preamp? Say something along the lines of the Schiit Freya? Always appreciate your thoughts and audio insights! Thanks.
I have (had) both and sold off my Schiit. FWIW I like smooth sound of the Denafrips, they were both nice but for my style and speakers the Denafrips won for me
Cannot say with regards to the mono stack, but I think the Denafrips takes the easy W over the Schitt Freya/Vidar stereo combo. Better in almost every way.
I love learning that reasonably affordable high quality audiophile gear meets or exceeds expectations, at least as far as audio performance goes. Not being able to return the relatively idiosyncratic equipment is a definite speed bump. I'm now torn between this impressive rig and the the more pedestrian but confidence inspiring Marantz PM8006. What to do, what to do...
That's a tough spot to be in. The PM8006 is a great unit for the cash and it offers significantly more flexibility than the Denafrips combo. On the other hand, the Denafrips combo is on a completely different level in terms of raw performance. I'll say this, if you're building a stereo rig and performance is your top priority, especially if you think you may upgrade your speakers as time moves on, then the Denafrips is the hands-down winner here. If however, you think you'll enjoy the features on the Marantz, enjoy the idea of a return-policy, find comfort in the brand, and do not think that you'll be upgrading your speakers for awhile - then a strong case can be made for the PM8006. That's how I see it at least. Good luck!
@@ZeroFidelity Upscalability really isn't a priority for me, I'm very satisfied with my vintage Infinity Kappa 8.1's and new KEF R3's. But if the improvement in performance of the Denafrips rig over the Marantz is as great as you seem to be suggesting then that just might justify their no-return risk as well as the price increase. Also, the Denafrips easily wins on cosmetics. Just for context, I'm currently using a 25 year old Yamaha AX-592 integrated stereo amp which is very impressive tonally but obviously lacking in power. It'll be demoted to garage/workshed duty driving a $50 thrift shop treasure, a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 50 Series II's in amazing condition. Thanks, Sean, for the response and thanks for the superior reviews!
Hey @Zero Fidelity, thanks for the review. From what you describe, it sounds exactly what I'm looking for. It is probably too short on power for my current speakers though (Bryston middle T which are power hungry) Do you know of Denafrips are planning something on a monoblock version of the Hyperion Power amp? Also, how would you describe the clicking of the relays when changing volume. It is loud enough to get annoying? Hard to tell from your video... I mean, I sometimes play with the volume all night on each song when we have friends at home pushing it up when it's a song everybody is loving and rolling it back when it'S more just for the ambiance. THANKS!
Not sure about the speaker wire used for the IEC inlet inside the Hestia. Cutting corners maybe? Bit sloppy? I had a look online and they had pictures with proper wiring and not speaker cables. Not very consistent. I suppose it does the same job and works. Bu the way great channel 👍
Good review tho, appreciated. This and an Ares II DAC and Artemis HPA and some Streamer or Naim Uniti Atom? I currently own an Atom but almost never use the streaming functions.
I am confused. Sean mentions many times that it lacks detail and refinement and is not for the true audiophile. But then again is great stack because it is very very WELL BUILT, and sounds good FOR THE MONEY. How could anyone buy it after this? 🙄
Great review! Reading all the comments I have learned a lot too. I really think I am gonna give that stack a try. Regarding people that are afraid of the non return policy, I feel different about that. Since Im from Canada, a return policy is not always that good. Take schiit company for example, which I respect a lot, if I return an item I will loose too much: expansive shipping plus restocking fee. So if it was just for me, I would prefer that these companies offer no return policy and then cut the prices...
Sean, if you had to pick gear for slight warm or tonally rich sound, would you personally go with a solid state stack like this or go with a tube amp or preamp? Questions like this reinforce your point that you can’t return gear like Kinki Studios or Denafrips as there is no audition trial period.
Hi, I am choosing between Kinki Studio EX-M1+ and this Denafrips Hestia and Hyperion. I have a pair of Kipsich RP-600m and two tube amps for vocal and jazz. I want to have another semiconductor amp for operas and orchestra. May you be so kind to give me an advice? EX-M1+ is very power and Denafrips stack looks nicer. Thanks in advance. Stay healthy!.
Considering this for LS50s in 10' x 13' room... would there be enough from this pre/amp combo? Would this combo give the LS50s what they are capable of? If not, at this price point, what would you recommend that would give the "accurate, refined, detailed" sound the 50s are capable of?
@Zero Fidelity How does the stack compare to the KInki? In terms of Chi-Fi who is king? The other question is how does the preamp do on its own, ie driving your beloved JC5?
Hey David. The Kinki ex-m1+ has a completely different sound. The Kinki takes on a cool character, and is all about speed, control, detail, and linearity. The Denafrips goes in the other direction by taking in a warm character. It's all about tone, midrange density, strong bass, and drive. I haven't used the Hestia pre-amp with the JC5, but I doubt it'll have many issues driving the amp. Especially given the fact that the JC5 has gain control. :)
@@ZeroFidelity I too am interested in preamp alone. How it compares to other preamps alone. So your words here about Kinki vs Denafrips are helpful. Ifyou happen to know, how would it compare to Emotiva XSP-1 , or others?
Yep. Saw some of the new Parasound stuff and have a good idea on whats coming in 2020. Pumped! As for how this compares to the iota: The iotavc stack has a bit more punch in the midrange and a little more grit to the sound, particularly along the treble. Of course, it offers a ton of features that the Denafrips stack does not offer. On the flip side, the Denafrips offer a much more organic sounding midrange, better tone, stronger bass, and more insight into whats happening with the recording. It plays a solid tier (or maybe two) above the iotavx in terms of performance, which is how it should be given the price difference.
There is a cost factor involved in the pricing which should be considered when buying this item but trial period has to be factored into the sale price.
At both around 3 grand would you rather this stack or the NAD M10 to power the Buchardt S400? Looks like I would also need a DAC and other components as well. I would be upgrading from the sprout 100.
Interesting thing, I have had Denafrips Hestia preamp and I have Parasound Halo 2.1 Integrated, must tell that preamp alone from Parasound sound better to me than Hestia. I tried both prepams on a Parasound hca2200u and crown xls1502 amp. Preamps alone are somehow on the same page, body over resolution, but I feel that Parasound is more lively. Hestia looks better build, but it have two annoying things, no master switch for turning off and problems with those two circuit breakers behind IEC socket.
This or kinky studio m1 in terms of pinpoint detail imaging and being blown away by hearing pitch black background and really hearing every thing in the music and thickness sound ?
I am new to expensive audio equipment and had a few questions. I have read it is more important to consider quality electronics than the best speaker you can afford. I want to get this amp/pre-amp as well as the Denafrips ares II DAC and then use the money I have left over to find a speaker. Is this the right approach? I primarily listen to music off my Iphone so I could get an adapter for the USB type B on the DAC for music. Mostly Jazz & 90s hiphop without much bass although I like classic rock also. I listen at quiet to moderate volumes Any speakers you know that express electronics particularly well? Any other amps close to this price you would recommend also?
I’m looking to upgrade from a Sprout100 to separates. I’m thinking either the Freya+ and Aegir or the Denafrips combo. I have an Ares 2 on order already. They will power the KEF R300. Any thoughts?
Hegel Röst, I purchased Magnepan LRS speakers, the Hegel’s complement the LRS very well. I found the Hegel used at half retail price which was a dealer trade in. I am pleased with the Hegel, although the Ares 2 dac was better than the onboard one. I can’t resist a bargain and I’m pleased with the system, sound quality has gone up significantly and the sound signature is more my liking
How is 1 single ended (RCA) input great news? And at 17:00 "if you know for a fact that this is what you're looking for". I would think most audiophiles would rather put that $2 grand into more of a risk-free purchase.
Tuned into your recent live chat. Told ya I have a Hestia on the way and looking to pair with A21+. Hestia is more preamp to pair with A21+... would you close the loop on what amp options to pair with Hestia. Thanks much!
Can the display be dimmed, or turned off ? How would these go with the LS50's (or metal dome tweeters in general) you think ? The KEFS are rated at 85db Sensitivity, so I'm just thinking if the Hyperion will have enough power to fully take control of them. But I'm guessing it will :)
Display can be dimmed via: the remote control. I think the Hyperion would pair up well to the LS50. No, it's not going to make the LS50 sound any less forward along the top end, but it should fill out the midrange quite nicely. Unless you listen at ridiculous volumes, there should be enough power to get the job done.
@@ZeroFidelity Thanks for that. An interesting comparison could be the Schiit Vidar perhaps? And great review! Totally agree that this set doesn't get anywhere near the attention it should.
@@ZeroFidelity Sold 😀 I was tempted by the Vidars more powerful specs, however the quality of the Hyperion build seems a cut above. So if it sounds better too, then it's worth the extra price.
I think you are missing the point. There is a lot of hype in the audiophile community regarding Denafrips DACs especially the Terminator. I am sure this is a fine pre-amp/amp combo but it's like Toyota fans asking you to review the Supra and you deciding to rather review the Hilux?
Hey Sean is the preout for the sub full range or does it only send out 80 to 100 hz down? Meaning for Speakers that can be Biamped you could in theory place a decent Class D in line to tighten up the Bass a little and leave more power for the upper frequency drivers. What do you think?

Zero Fidelity, hi Sean. I didn’t know so I asked. Anyway, you put a smile on my face and that is always a good thing. Having you on this medium is way more fun than anyone else. People may not agree with you, but none question you genuineness or honesty. That’s why your channel grows!
Hey Sean, great video as always. Did you happen to use this combo with the Klipsch Forte IIIs? If so, how was the combo? Average, good or near perfect?
I'd say the combo falls under the 'Good' denotation. Very good when you factor in the price.
@@ZeroFidelity is there another combo (or integrated) that you think matches better with the Forte's at a similar price point?
Hi Sean, which affects SQ more? Pre-amp or Amp? On the pre-amp side, could you review a few tube-based ones (prima Luna, Rogue, Modwright, Microzotl) and compare them against the Denafrips Hestia? Thks
Hi, how does this sound compared to the Kinki EX-M1+? Thanks.
Any chance you've tried this stack with our beloved Harbeth P3ESR?
@zerofidelity Hey Shaun, great little review but only saw this just now! You've got me interested in the Hyperion, and even the Hestia preamp too (with that pretty face of hers). Would you think the Hyperion would pair well with a tube preamp? Say something along the lines of the Schiit Freya? Always appreciate your thoughts and audio insights! Thanks.
You compare this to the Schiit Freya+ and Aegir? Definitely interested in this comparison.
Good point
I have (had) both and sold off my Schiit. FWIW I like smooth sound of the Denafrips, they were both nice but for my style and speakers the Denafrips won for me
@@DWTWilt may I ask what speakers you are using with the denafrips combo? I was on the fence between this and schiit's stack also.
@@jay12345ist blown away and super happy with either the Tecktons and my Elacs UB5 towers. You will be super happy with the Denafrips stack!
I wonder how this stack compares to the schiit freya s with schiit vidars in mono since it's almost the same price and has the exact same features.
Thank you! Now I know what to buy to drive the S400!
THANKS!
Nice stuff, but would it have killed them to put a pair of RCAs on the back of the Hyperion?
Great review!! Can any of the inputs be programmed for a fixed volume/home theater bypass?
Not sure about the speaker wire used for the IEC inlet inside the Hestia. Cutting corners maybe? Bit sloppy? I had a look online and they had pictures with proper wiring and not speaker cables. Not very consistent. I suppose it does the same job and works. Bu the way great channel 👍
Good review tho, appreciated.
This and an Ares II DAC and Artemis HPA and some Streamer or Naim Uniti Atom? I currently own an Atom but almost never use the streaming functions.
Just wanted to mention I use RCA connections, and watch your videos! No opposed to XLR, my setup just isn't there right now.
Fantastic review!
Amen.
Schiit restocking fee allows them to cut the price.
Sean, if you had to pick gear for slight warm or tonally rich sound, would you personally go with a solid state stack like this or go with a tube amp or preamp? Questions like this reinforce your point that you can’t return gear like Kinki Studios or Denafrips as there is no audition trial period.
They look badass.
@zerofidelity any experience with audio-gd amps? Maybe another good choice for the price would be the stack nfb1amp with the A1
Hi, I am choosing between Kinki Studio EX-M1+ and this Denafrips Hestia and Hyperion.
I know the Triangle Signature Delta is magnificent. How close to is the Australe?
Very unusual the camera is not steady. But still you are the best.
Will this stack work well with Totem Sky bookshelves? Would Denafrips Thallo be a better match?
also the same but with thallo and totem tribe towers
Considering this for LS50s in 10' x 13' room... would there be enough from this pre/amp combo? Would this combo give the LS50s what they are capable of? If not, at this price point, what would you recommend that would give the "accurate, refined, detailed" sound the 50s are capable of?
How does it stack against the kinki integrated you tested a while ago?
Check with Vinshine Audio on how to connect REL high level inputs to balanced amplifiers.
I recently got their Ares 2 dac and i love it. Is there a remote for the preamp?
Yes. All Denafrips preamplifiers come with remote controls.
Hey Sean, how about the Matrix Element X? There are very few reviews of it at this time.
One of you better ones.
Great video
Sean, youre the best !
Just going off memory, how do you compare this stack to the Iota, and did you get to see any of the new Parasound products debuted at CEDIA 2019?
@@ZeroFidelity Thanks for that insight, it is much appreciated.
There is a cost factor involved in the pricing which should be considered when buying this item but trial period has to be factored into the sale price.
“In this day in age, it’s just nice that the amp gets warm” haha
Hi Sean, it would be great if you review sometime Devialet Expert 220 pro and compare against some other amps.
have youtried the pre amp with any other power amp as these can be brought seperately as i already have amp power amp
This or kinky studio m1 in terms of pinpoint detail imaging and being blown away by hearing pitch black background and really hearing every thing in the music and thickness sound ?
Do you think DENAFRIPS HESTIA + THALLO can handle TAD S1EX-EX and do they have any service centers in Europe? You know just in case ☺️
Wow.. jawdrop when I saw the inside of hyperion. How this compare to schiit system? It make schiit looks like sh*t inside.
I listen at quiet to moderate volumes
Any speakers you know that express electronics particularly well? Any other amps close to this price you would recommend also?
Wanting to know what the Artemis is like and if it is worth the money. Any thoughts? Thanks
I’m looking to upgrade from a Sprout100 to separates. I’m thinking either the Freya+ and Aegir or the Denafrips combo. I have an Ares 2 on order already. They will power the KEF R300. Any thoughts?
What did you end up buying?
How would you compare it to the Yamaha a-s1200?
The Hestia doesn't use a toroidal transformer; it's an O-ring transformer -- which is cosmetically similar, but better.
@@wavesnowaves Will make this easy for ya. As much as I respect the Vidar, get the Hyperion. :)
@@ZeroFidelity Sold 😀 I was tempted by the Vidars more powerful specs, however the quality of the Hyperion build seems a cut above. So if it sounds better too, then it's worth the extra price.
@@ZeroFidelity How do you dim with the remote? I have one but haven't figured it out.
I think you are missing the point. There is a lot of hype in the audiophile community regarding Denafrips DACs especially the Terminator. I am sure this is a fine pre-amp/amp combo but it's like Toyota fans asking you to review the Supra and you deciding to rather review the Hilux?
Isn't this a clone of the jungson? The parts looks very similar and also watts. Can you confirm?
What the blank can I do with a preamp with only one RCA type analog input?! How can I hook up a turntable, CD player, a tuner, whatever!?
Your description of this stack's sound signature sounds like my Atoll.
Hi
Just bought the Hestia - anyone know how to dim the display? Cheers! Kent
it's the time button on the remote
Hey Sean is the preout for the sub full range or does it only send out 80 to 100 hz down? Meaning for Speakers that can be Biamped you could in theory place a decent Class D in line to tighten up the Bass a little and leave more power for the upper frequency drivers. What do you think?
The outputs dole out a full-range signal. So if you want to use other amps, you're free to do so.
Thanks again for the detailed and easy to grasp review, and of course the quick response. Fantastic as always!
great review, beautiful equipment, but only 1 rca input makes it a deal killer for me
same here, two should be standard
+2. What kind of preamp is this? where do I hookup my multiple sources?
@@jsmithepa
Their DACs have multiple inputs. Ares2 has 5 inputs and balanced out...no remote switching tho:-/
But the SOUND!
Love Kallax-Fi components!!!
