    The new hope crawl says rebels spies steal plans during an attack, the movies connected fine.

    Rogue One was the prequel we needed.. How they made Tarking/Leia and bringing back some familiair places.. Im 21 but i grew up with every Star Wars film.. I really had the OT feeling when watching the Death Star/Tarking scenes. Awesome film!

    What impressed me about Rogue One in its connection to ANH, is how much thought Edwards and company put into this. The Imperial Round Table scene, my favorite scene in ANH, I noticed there was a chair there but nobody was in it. It then hit me that was Krennic's chair. Which that blew my mind. Also, when seeing ANH's Yavin IV base, it was remarkable how identical they were.
    To me, Rogue One added that depth that I honestly had with ANH. I'm NOT saying it is bad. Far from it. But given the prequels and my love of the Legends continuity, I always wanted to see the story of how the Rebels got the Death Star plans. Now, we have it. And in my humble view, it was great.
    It made me further appreciate Luke and company's struggles as Jyn Erso and company's ultimate struggle against the Empire was NOT in vain. That their act would be the catalyst for a massive change. This being that New Hope which was Luke Skywalker. :)

      "It then hit me that was Krennic's chair."
      Mmmm probably not. I think you're looking WAY too deeply here. Krennic would not have been a blip on George Lucas' imagination at that time, the character would not have existed in his mind at all..........besides, Lucas has nothing to do with these new movies, none of his ideas were used in TFA and certainly would not have been used here.

    • @Avarn388
      @Avarn388 8 років тому +4

      inefekt69 I think you're missing the point. I get that Lucas didn't have the foresight for this. And I'm more aware that he is not involved. My thoughts, i'll plead the fifth. Still, it is an amazing thing to notice when watching Rogue One and ANH back to back and I personally believe had Krennic lived; he would have been in that seat. And that to me, is really cool.
      It goes to show how Edwards and company studied ANH quite a bit with Rogue One.

    • @UberTheWolf
      @UberTheWolf 8 років тому +7

      +inefekt69 - You're looking at it in literal terms. From a storytelling standpoint, and what Neil is getting at, is that little things that may have been oversights back in 1977 now have a lot of relevance. Like Luke being Red 5. We actually see the original Red 5 in Rogue One, he dies which of course leaves the position open for Luke to take it in IV.
      It's just awesome that these new films can take little inconsistencies or over sights in the OT and give them some depth and explanation. (The biggest one being the exhaust port itself, which was flawlessly explained in Rogue One.)
      But yeah, as Neil said Edwards and co. must have studied ANH to a ridiculous amount, which is pretty commendable.

    Rogue one fits the timeline whether it was minutes or hours when Princess Leia Organa receives the weapon's plans in the hope of finding a weakness is inconsequential to me. This is the case where suspension of disbelief is important so that you can enjoyed this fictitious movie lol. Watching the New Hope now carries an emotional weight that was missing for me. I enjoyed the movie but it didn't reach my heart before. It is phenomenal to watch these Rogue one characters who are normal people with no powers show extraordinary strength, self-sacrifice and courage in getting these weapons plans so that they can beat the empire. We should focus on that moral message and not nitpick the timeline. May the force be with you guys! Take care!

    • @BarbaPamino
      @BarbaPamino 8 років тому +1

      Joyful Kia for me if I watch it right after another, which I did, it comes off a bit silly. Nothing is ruined. For me New Hope is far and away the gem of the series. It's the big seller and the Oscar winner (in tech categories). I know Empire does everything better but it improves upon more than it innovatives. Which I'd why I like T1 over T2 and Alien over Aliens. Nothing can ruin the original Star Wars for me.
      on its own I found Rogue One to be tight but not impactful enough. Doesn't develop the world or characters enough. And gets too melodramatic at times. Inconsistent with the style of Star Wars I'm used to.But very much in line with the new Disney style. I really can't stand Force Awakens bit I'll let eps 8 and 9 come out before I write it off.

      Επανεινωνδας Κοσμας Thanks for your perspective and insight. I respect your opinion. the beautiful thing about movies is that its subjective and no movie is perfect and loved by everyone . I love force awakens but you don't and I can respect that. of course nothing can beat the Oscar worthy original star wars in my opinion. the originals will always be superior. its always nice hearing other viewpoints different from my own thanks for being respectful even if we don't agree. take care and have a happy sunday

    • @BarbaPamino
      @BarbaPamino 8 років тому

      Joyful Kia Happy Sunday. And I'm never disrespectful with regards to opinions of art. Seems silly to me when people are. I do however troll back with trolls. Just for kicks.
      Anywho. I get that people like Awakens and I get why. To me it's like a Beatles cover of a Smokey Robinson and the Miracles song. It's a great song. It can't be bad recorded by the Beatles, but I've heard it before done by a better group. That's how I see Force Awakens. But just like how many only like the Beatles versions of old rnb songs, some will even prefer Awakens to the originals. I have no qualms with anyone that enjoys something.
      For example, my favourite non-originals is Phantom Menace. And most people, even myself at times, would think I'm nuts to say Menace is a Star Wars film than Rogue. And yet, it's what I think.

    To be fair, most of the Rebels who were actual *on* the Tantive IV didn't see Vader (I don't think Captain Antilles did either). But the crew probably decided on a last ditch effort to at least divert his attention briefly. And like you said, there are more than one blockade runners and Vader probably didn't have the time to see the ship's specific markings. But he totally did know they were lying, even before Rogue One was a thing he wasn't taking their BS

  • @alexperaza9475
    @alexperaza9475 8 років тому +10

    I think the Rebels lying about being on a diplomatic mission in A New Hope works with the end of Rogue One, because presumably there's more than one ship that looks like Tantive IV. It could be a very common ship design for all we know. So, from their point of view, Vader probably doesn't have any evidence that it's the exact same ship (regardless of how sure he is that it is the same ship). Anyway, what are they supposed to do? Immediately give up and go, "Yep, that was us. We stole the plans. Here you go."

    • @NGC6144

      What about the force?
      I guess Vader was too weak to do what most padawans and kylo ren can do? Force persuasion? Mind trick? Sith Domination?
      It also raises a bunch of questions as to why he can't do things like fight while using the force, which he seems completely capable of doing in Rogue one but not in any subsequent movies.

    • @alexperaza9475
      @alexperaza9475 8 років тому

      That doesn't really bother me, actually. There's a disconnect between the OT and the prequels as to what the Force is and how it works, its parameters, etc. And Darth Vader's powers seems to vary a bit even between the OT movies themselves. It's obvious that the character was still being fleshed out in the original OT and that the parameters of the Force were never set in stone during those movies. And also perhaps certain abilities just couldn't be done on film due to the limitations of special effects, stunt work, etc. To me, the Darth Vader we see in Rogue One feels like the one I imagined as a kid when I watched A New Hope. That's good enough for me.

    • @BenRollman
      @BenRollman 8 років тому +3

      I don't either. Bail left for Alderaan to ask her to go get Obi-Wan. But she's in the corvette docked on the flagship and we know Raddus left before Bail did, so she must have talked to him over transmissions rather than face to face.

    • @superlive98
      @superlive98 8 років тому +1

      Leia was not on Alderaan. She was already on Yavin IV. I think she was hitching a ride on Raddus's ship en route to Tattooine, only for Raddus to inform her that Scarif was his real objective. She then proceeded to Tattooine after the Battle of Scarif because she had a diplomatic travel documents authorizing her to stop there, besides the fact that she still had to complete the original mission given to her by her father (Bail Organa) to contact Obi-Wan Kenobi.

    It never made sense trying to say the ship was on a diplomatic mission. The ships are firing on each other when they first appear on the screen. Troopers start firing as soon as they enter the ship. The Rebels are ready and waiting to fight.
    If anything, the opening to ANH makes more sense after the ending of RO. C-3PO's line about 'no escape for the Princess this time' fits perfectly because they just escaped from Vader minutes before. And Vader says he knows they weren't 'on any mercy mission'. To me the two connect better than I thought they would.

    The difference between Rogue One and the prequel trilogy - and this coming from someone who respects and likes the prequels - is that it adds to the original/s. It adds layers to Episode IV and the destruction of the Death Star; to Mon Mothma, Red/Gold Squadrons and even Tarkin. Was Anakin's tale in the prequel trilogy tragic? Sure! But did I already know it would be from what we get in Return of the Jedi? Hell yeah I did!

    A lot of people mistakenly think hyperspace is instant space travel but in the movie lore it took our heros in A New Hope 3 days or so to get from Tatooine to Alderaan. And in order to travel between some places it could take several way points.

    It ties in perfectly. In the opening crawl of ANH says that rebels have won their first victory against the empire, and that rebel spies managed to steal the plans. This is all accurate to what happened in rogue one, with that being the first time the rebel cells all banded together in a large battle. It's perfect. Even Vader's line of "several transmissions were beamed to this ship by rebel spies" is accurate. Jyn (in disguise as an imperial, hence the spy) transmitted the plans up to the mom calamari cruiser. The rebel ship was inside that cruiser, so technically the plans were transmitted to that ship (the Tantive IV).

  • @roguestar8
    @roguestar8 8 років тому +1

    But how did the Tantive IV end up in the Devastator at the end of Rogue One just before getting away and being captured again in A New Hope? We never learned why the Tantive was there in the first place! The Rebels were like "DETACHED!!!" All right, but why were you attached in the first place? Can a ship just detach itself from a bigger ship?

      Nautilus1972 my head canon is that he takes a few days in pursuit. I grew up listening to the radio drama, where Leia is on the run incognito for a little bit, hiding behind her political status. Also, going off some other tie in materials, Vader low-key LET her go. I feel like the film makers had this in mind...he has very slight hesitation. He had to put on a show for his troops, but held back in the final moment. If he had stopped the plans, then that rag tag fleet would be crushed end of story. He was trying to use bait with the ultimate goal of...what we see on episode IV. He wanted central Rebel leadership. If not for the weakness in the station and the presence of his son on the opposing side, that plan would have worked. In one of the comics (I think the current run is considered canon), Palpatine is angry at him over his costly gamble, and he tries to implicate Tarkin as well. Palpatine is like "well he's dead, so it's all on you."

    With regards to if this enhances the original trilogy: I absolutely think yes. I'll never see the opening of ANH and see the plans again without thinking of the sacrifice that our band of heroes went through to get those plans there. Not to mention all of the evil machinations of Tarkin to get himself in charge of the Death Star. This does what a prequel should which is recontextualize the already existing material whilst also standing on its own. It also doesn't fall into the fatal trap of the prequel trilogy by not staring characters that we see in the original trilogy. We all knew where Obi and Ani were going to end up, which squashed any tension in the scenes with them.

    One of the glitches" in the connection between "Rogue One" and A New Hope" are the two line Darth Vader uttered to Princess Leia. "Several transmissions were beam to this ship by rebel spies. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you!" What we saw in"Rogue One" was a hand-off! It wasn't sent directly to Leia's ship. Another line from Vader; "I have traced all the dead rebel spies to her. Now,she is my only link in finding the hidden rebel fortress." So, the film did not establish the relationship between Leia and the main characters involved. From “A New Hope” Leia seem to have a reputation of conducting “mercy missions” during times when rebel activities take place but stays in “good standing” with the Imperial Senate which she is a member. The film makers could have exploited that to mesh the two films together. The main characters would have been known employees/friends/acquaintances/subjects which would have brought suspicion from Darth Vader. If the story writers did a little more “homework”,the two films may have “dove-tailed” far more neatly.

    The series has already established that when a ship goes to hyperspace, it's difficult to track. When the Falcon disappears in ESB, Piett says " Calculate every possible destination along their last known trajectory." Clearly, Vader would have to hunt & track them down.
    Where continuity does break down is the "intercepted" a transmission part.
    I didn't interpret the exposition about the flaw to be the exhaust port. Rather, it's just that if an explosion were to occur in the reactor core, it would cause the entire Death Star to be destroyed. The rebels still needed the full plans to figure out a way to make that explosion happen. If not for the exhaust port, then they would have needed to infiltrate and set off a bomb in the core, which is probably more what Erso had in mind.

      I don't want a channel I think that would be a lot less compelling since the emperor basically says that he let them have the plans on purpose to lead the Rebels in to a trap (It's a trap!). Also, with that story it means that the emperor had bothans slaughtered for no real reason. He was going to let them have the plans, but still many bothans died.

  • @szalma94

    Yes, the whole trolling Vader just minutes after they escaped seems silly. But I think that the rebels did it for stalling. They didn`t have enough time to copy the plans or to send it to Tatooine personally so in a last ditch effort, they had to divert the empire`s attention briefly until Leia put the plans in R2. And to stall even further, Leia turned herself in so that R2 and C-3PO had time to escape in a pod with the plans. And as far as the rebels know, who were on the actual Tantive IV didn't see Vader (I don't think Captain Antilles did either). This is the best explanation I could come up with. The real question is that how did the empire find the exact ship that had the plans. Do they have a method to calculate and predict lightspeed destination coordinates? If so then why didn`t the empire follow the Millenium Falcon when they escaped via lightspeed in ep. V? Mabye I`m just overthinking a movie about space wizards and laser swords but I like it when a movie feels complete, well thought through and no loose ends. If someone could give me a believable explanation for that I would be grateful.

    I don't think the exhaust port plot was a bad thing in the first place. Think of it like a car, you need somewhere to vent the heat and a station that size will be creating a lot of heat. if you stick an apple in a car exhaust the car will break down, fire a torpedo it to that amount of heat, it will blow. people need to stop over thinking things

    How did the two droids, R2 & 3PO last seen on Yavin, get on the Corellian Corvette?
    Keep in mind that the fleet sent to Jedda was a rush to support. They would not abandon Yavin and would be too rushed to worry about a protocol droid and an astro mech.
    The Corvette had to have at least met another ship (the Ghost?) to collect the droids or transfer Leia (if another Corvette). There would have had to been days to as much as a couple weeks between Rogue One and A New Hope.
    I suspect Vader was quite driven to find the plans thus no more than 2 weeks in my estimation.
    Rogue One segues beautifully into A New Hope.

I like the idea of Vader searching for blockade runners but like a getaway car surely the smart move would have been to dump the Tantive or escape in a different ship so Vader has a hunt instead of a simple chase. • @minerpro24
    @minerpro24 8 років тому +1

    I don't think the exhaust port needed an entire movie to explain itself. It wasn't really a flaw. It's a feat of engineering that they didn't need dozens of those exhaust ports. It could not be any smaller because that single port was exhausting all the heat produced by the death star. The rebels should never had found out about it, but they got lucky and got the plans. Then the should never had been able to make a successful shot because they were getting destroyed until luke (an extremely gifted force user and pilot) barely made the shot.
    The empire had a good thing going until all of these horribly unlucky and impossible to predict factors came into play.
    I still liked rouge one a lot, but I hated how much of the plot focused on this "flaw." I think it should have been that Galen had pointed out that there was a way to destroy it. The port was necessary and unavoidable. Really the second death star needs a whole movie to explain why there an entire ship could fly into the middle of it.

    the only thing that can be a negative about this movie is that it draws too much attention away from the main idea. george lucas made this to be a story about Luke and his relationship between his father, sister, and friends which shape him to become a jedi and return his father to the light. The rebels and the empire was just the setting of the story. disney has totally thrown this out the window with these new movies but Rogue One was Incredible. Rogue One fits perfectly but it has nothing to do with the skywalker family.

There is no doubt in Vaders mind that the ship he captures is the same ship that fled the battle in rouge one. HOWEVER, it becomes quickly apparent to him that this is indeed a diplomatic ship carrying a Senator of the Imperial Senate. Despite what you may choose to believe, the Emperor still needs to play along with the senate and even the imperial officers know this. "holding her is dangerous...". Even the existence of the Deathstar was covered up to avoid enquire from the Senate. So Vader couldn't go completely ape shit aboard the ship of an Imperial Senator.

    So the death star instantly obliterates Dantooine (7 minutes into A New Hope) hours after it slowly and dramatically destroys Scarif?? I understand they said earlier in Rogue One that the Death Star would be upgraded. But why mention the upgrade if it won't make sense regardless? Rogue One was the one adapting to A New Hope, not the other way around.
