    Love this journal. Thanks for sharing. Instead of buying new scissors, you can make the edges unsticky using cornstarch or baby powder with an old paintbrush. If you are a stamper, you may already have a powder tool that would work. As for lives, I don't watch lives. They tend to be too long, especially when the presenter feels they must say hello to all the new arrivals to the video/chat. Sorry, just my opinion.

      I share your opinion about the *lives*with too much chitchat in the beginning and it takes too long to start.

      I don't like the constant "hello hello hello" either so wouldnt do that LOL . I was thinking of setting a time limit....and a theme....( ie. use gel prints) then when the time is up , it's up....since I wont be doing a specific page...maybe this will work. I will try the cornstarch trick...I have a chemical/scent sensitivity so avoid anything with smell. K

    #compositionnotebook I created my Positivity Journal on a composition notebook base. I don't glue pages together, but I do glue pages in, like scrapbook paper at the beginning of the monthly sections and white, black or gellie-printed cardstock as art journal pages. I have a long-arm stapler that is really helpful for those small books and the staples don't poke me. Tim Holtz has Teflon scissors. My guys purchased the biggest pair for one of my Christmas gifts that Tim had, because it fit their hands. So, Tim has a smaller pair of Teflon scissors too. I also have my own version of Teesha Moore's art journaled dolls. Have you seen Teesha Moore's art journaled paper dolls?

      Thank you so much for the information. I will look into those teflon scissors. I've hear of Teesha, but dont know if I've seen her journaled paper dolls ..will look that up too. Thanks for watching. K

    When applying the sticky sheets like you used for your covers, instead of peeling all of the backing off and fighting with all of the stickiness while trying to get if straight/even. Try peeling off one of the top corners and adhering it down and rolling it down the cover while peeling off the backing. Sticking it down as you peel the backing off. That way only a small amount of the glue from the sheet is exposed at a time.

    I can't get use to that wrinkle look for the overall book because of the glueing.

    I'm really enjoying this series and can't wait to start on my own comp book art journal!
    For the spine I'd use patterned duck- tape, it's strong and perfect for the spine. I have some that is polkadot and some that are neon! 💕❤💛💙💜💚🧡🌈

    When cutting off sticky stuff lay a piece of tissue paper over the sticky side and it won’t stick you to your scissors so bad.

    Lots of great details here, so I’m commenting as the video progresses …
    1. I love the way the glued pages that are gessoed have that texture.
    2. I love the texture you’ve created with your castoff edges … looks so cool. I also love the blue, yellow pink combo.
    3. No matter how small a dab of color I put on my palette, I always have waste, which I usually wipe away … I need to have a side journal to use up this extra paint more economically.
    4. Re: taking out pages … I DO love my Dylusions 5x8 journal size, but they pack that darned thing so tight, I also end up removing the center of nearly every signature. Those pages that I rip out, I trim the edges down to about 4.75x8”, and then use them in a loose leaf journal I’ve made (A5 size) with chipboard and a 6 ring binder insert from Etsy … this has become a favorite way of using up the torn out pages (no lie, about 2 inches thick from all the journals I’ve had).
    5. Love that sticker payer as a cover … just thinking out loud here … what about cutting, say a 2 inch strip over the spine part, then putting the page sized sticker so it overlaps? May provide a more secure spine ? (That E6000 is magic stuff ❤️)
    6. So funny you used the Julie Nutting image. I’m a little bit OCD, so I have nearly all of the ladies in her line. One of my composition book/journals is solely devoted to Julie Nutting figures - because of their size, my usual 5x8 journal is a bit small, so this composition page is just right.
    I really love the journal cover you created. In fact, as evidenced by my comments, I loved ALL of the various techniques you shared ❤️❤️❤️
    (Oh yeah, #7 - love your mini books you created from the extra pages you removed ❤️)
    Thank you for sharing so many great ideas

      Great use of those Dylusion pages. Get yourself a composition book or make one for your leftover paint...half the battle is having something you can easily grab . Yes for the spine it would need to be a wider strip....I was thinking something made from canvas...but now that I used that E6000 it seems to have stayed together well. Happy creating. K

      I actually have 2-10 packs, one is grid and one is lined. I like using them for collecting quotes (I like my thin Sharpies, and they bleed, so I end up gluing 2 pigs together. But, since it’s just writing, I don’t remove pages from that. I also use for practicing/sampling zentangles/ mandalas, and then have a few for Bible study where I’ll write passages I like, and of course, embellish them with colored pencil doodles - can’t just have writing, lol. I love that this “discard”/ using up extra paint practically creates its own prepped art journal ❤️

    Will you tear these backgrounds out to use on a card or a tag or something?

    • @KarenBurchill
      @KarenBurchill  2 роки тому

      That is one option....to just rip them out and use them as instant backgrounds. I am using them as the start or backgrounds of art journal pages so not ripping them out, but rather turning whole book into an art journal. I would do one or the other as if you rip a page another page will come out. K

    Karen, I first saw the idea of using a composition book for leftover paint on Cat Hand’s channel back when she first started her Mixed Media series, and I’ve been meaning to do it ever since, because I HATE waste and try to make the most of my materials. As a beginner, I love how you added the idea of using the back of the page to write the details such as paint colors, stencils used, etc.; I think this would be very helpful to me as I’m learning what I like. One of the things that I appreciate about your channel is that you encourage us in using what we have already created. I also like how you explain how different parts of the stencil can be used for different effects. I’m hoping to use some repurposed plastic from packaging to create some of my own stencils for mixed media art. Have you ever tried this, and if so, any pointers for me? I would enjoy live videos from you, since you said you don’t like spending a lot of time on the greetings aspect. I do watch other lives occasionally, but if I’m not actively creating or doing something else, it gets kind of boring waiting for things to start. I would love to see you making more cards or gelli printing in particular. Also using things from magazines or clip art, for those of us with fewer stamps and stencils. Thanks for always inspiring me; now to build more creating time into my schedule!

      Thank you Linda. The first time I saw someone using composition book as a journal was early in my art journaling journey . It was Shannon Green and her Journaling by Fives. At the time I didnt want to do that. How we evolve. Thank you so much for all your comments. I do plan on doing a video making stencils. Until then , the advice I have is be sure to have sharp/new blades on your exacto knife...Makes it so much easier. I will add your ideas/suggestions to my list of possible upcoming videos. So many ideas...so little time. Happy creating Linda. K

    Really enjoyed watching the cover come together. Love the colors and design. I’d just worked directly on the covers for my little journals but I like the idea of the sticky paper. I like the ability to move it around more freely as you work on it. I’m guessing it also reenforced the cover to make it more substantial. Thank you so much for sharing.

    • @kazoomi2
      @kazoomi2 2 роки тому

      @@KarenBurchill I like to do them and have a mini book in my purse, by the phone, etc. Some are just common things books, shopping lists, window measurements when I needed to replace cracked panes of glass, or even notes from videos I watch when I'm away from my computer. Some are just stamped in or card ideas are drawn in. Sometimes I run a sewing pattern transfer wheel (with the little prongs) across the page so it's now perforated and I can easily tear out the pages. It doesn't matter what I do as those might just be leftover paper scraps that I've made into a little book. I use traveler sizes for travel /trips (remember those in our distant past?). I also make them to send to friends and their daughters when the girls have announced their engagements. If I have an announcement from them I try to them the books that are decorated in a theme or color to match the design of the announcement. They've said that there is so much to do and remember and that things just pop into their heads at odd moments so by carrying these they have a way to capture the thoughts. They said they really appreciated the books and have looked forward to receiving them. I use a WeRMemory keepers journal binding tool to punch holes and then hand sew them up. In theory I'd use nice linen thread but in reality I use dental floss. It's handy, strong, threads easily and ties really well. I can make any size pages and booklets which I love. I just find it relaxing and when I use my booklets they bring a smile to my face.
