After seeing so much hate and ignorance about my last video about AAVE/black English, here are some more hard truths for anyone who doesn't realise the depth of their own prejudice.
Christian, for those haters who do not agree with or believe in your explanations, I suggest reading an article from Portland State University. I’ll leave the link here so that they can find it easily. Here it is: www.pdx.edu/multicultural-topics-communication-sciences-disorders/african-american-vernacular-english-aave That article says exactly what you’ve pointed out. Thank you so much for what you’ve been doing. It’s inspiring, meaningful and worth watching.
Oh I have perceived this in other not to subtle ways, by people using the more "highly educated or high flaunted" forms of expressions of English words. I have also perceived this while listening to people learning English, heavily accenting the English Language with their first language. Personally I know how many years it took me to learn English and German simultaneously as a child living in Europe. A good 6 years I would say, to be able to distinguish the two languages and sort through the thousands of cognates the two language have in common.
Hi Christian 😊 The thing is that you can be educated but not necessarily smart and smart but not necessarily educated. Smart people will get what you meant, no need to explain 😆 And I mean truly life-smart people 🙂 As Forrest Gump once said: “I’m not a smart man but I know what love is.” So let me tell you that I may not be a smart person but I FEEL what you mean... because language is so much more than just words and the way they’re combined 🙌 Thank you for your persistence to open people’s minds 😃
"People hearing without listening. People talking without speaking..." Thank you Christian for sharing your thoughts about language with us. It's really interesting.
Christian ! I pray, I see you in public so I can hug you tight and tell you a huge Thank you ! For helping my english. You are amazing. Salute from your Afghan followers.
No regrets Christian! You're doing a fantastic work. Haters are everywhere, don't worry about it. Congrants for your videos! Don't give up, you'll change the way of learning! Enjoy your glass of whisky!
I'm Italian, sometimes I speak to my friend in dialect, every region in Italy has a dialect, but when I speak to other people who do not know my dialect I speak in a correct Italian way, I understand what you say, I found this video very interesting, good job.
Oh, man, so many things to say about this video. I'm a Brazilian who teaches English as a second language in Australia and I find your videos so inspirational and important not only to students, but to anyone who loves learning languages like I do. Unfortunately people out there are so caught up with this idea of "perfect" standard language that they forget the beauty of a social/natural development of a language abd how it changes over time. I could not agree with you more when you say that this is prejudice and that people should open their mind about different 'Englishes' that we see out there. Thank you so much for your videos. You should know that there are people out there who share your feelings torwards language learning and are trying to promote a new mindset regarding this process as much as you do. You're a legend mate! P.S. I watched most of your interviews. I wonder how we get to interview you :)
Thank you, I am from Algeria I am a professor in physics. English is my third language but now I realized that english is very very important for me for my children so we spend a lot of time and mony to become fleunt and I think you are the best one in youtube gives us the effective helpness.
People understand what they want to understand. Those who listen instead of just hearing what one says, get it like I get you Christian. Keep on spreading the truth. 👍😘
You really have enlightened my heart. I confess that I used not to be a porguese speaker, just because English sounds much better in my ears. I started enjoying a little more my own language because of your classes. You are the best linguistic teacher I've ever known... God bless you mate!
Christian, thank you for helping me understand that the way we talk is part of our culture. I speak Spanish and I see that each region tries to express its Spanish as the best and as you say, there is no standard language, we express ourselves according to our culture, our history; we can´t be ashamed of our culture, we must be proud of it.
thanks from Ecuador. You have helped me understand the process of learning English. I no longer feel frustrated or anxious or unmotivated or stressed now I am confident that I have the chance to enjoy learning English and be tolerant of all people who speak English in different ways and learn from every culture, race, academic level, etc.
Hi Christian, I'm Italian and I love to study English and your videos. I'm sorry things are in that way, but really you shouldn't worry so much about it. I've never heard Americans to speak in that way, actually. Personally, I believe you're a great teacher. Have a good day, and MERRY CHRISTMAS! 😁👍🌲
I have to say, you are knowledgable and a very brave teacher ❤. Part of the topic is really sensitive, requiring deep insights and great bravery to speak up.
Many thanks Christian, I'm Colombian and I agree with you about this video, I've learnead more with you in three videos than school. YOU'RE AWESOME BRO
Hi dear teacher! I do enjoy your English tips! People around the world must understand that there are well educated English speakers and not so well educated English speakers. Keep up the good work master!
Your videos are so interesting and informative! I believe, no one can compare with you. Now, after 2 years I've been learning English, I started to understand English speech, and your way to speak English, and particularly your videos attract me most of all.
Wow Chistian you are awesome! I am writing to support you, all the things you have said are essentials truths about languages. If you need a help with these haters you can count on me. Different of these haters you have made a lot of friends helping people learning the real English! I live in Brazil and I have been travelled do US for 3 times, one of them I have studied in English school in FL. All I can say is I wanted to have a teacher like you. May my next destination will be England ! Never surrender keep going, your work is amazing, and also was the best I found in youtube!
In my opinion, there is no need to apologize. You are too talented to do that.Besides,no one can truly erradicate prejudice overnight, and the main problem resides precisely in those people with those nasty comments, not in you.Probably you can teach them a course on Linguistics!Greetings from Buenos Aires 💬
I am sorry you have received so much hate ,it is so unfair...but don't worry that experience only make you stronger. We all know you are passionate about teaching and give us unique, intelligent and always amazing contents😘 and you care about the people. We love you Canguro English
Hi, Christian. I love your fervency and anger for those who do not understand the logic of the fundamental things, today, communication. No matter how academic the language is, the key is to be understood and to be able to speak with it. I was brought up in a very bourgeoise family, so throughout my childhood I heard a perfect French language around me and I spoke that way. So I was able to make the difference between social classes just by listening to people talk. And, to be honest, I didn't like the language that people from lower society spoke or the language that Canadians or Carabbeans spoke. Later on, I changed my education. It was about time. For several years now, I have appreciated the difference. People who speak a different French than mine. They have given a breath of life to my mother tongue. They make it more powerful, more lively, more colourful. Now I'm opening my ear to rap music... It's mostly Africans who sing "rap" in France. It's another language, full of poetry. They were able to come up with another French language... similar and imprinted of their origins, at the same time. Thanks to them. As my father, who suffered four coronary bypasses used to tell me : Be careful, Christian, take it easy 🙂
Thanks Christian. I totally agree with you. I live in Brazil, the country that speaks Portuguese. But, here there are a variety of different accents. Its depends on the region or state you are, but we all speak the same language. I used to live in London, a cosmopolitam city that people have different accent, its depend on the neighbourhood.
Thanks Christian for another lesson i can understand a variety of english language. And I agree with you, that different ways of speakiing is something wonderful, not restrictive.
I'm a 56 yo brasilian vet. I've been learning english for many years, with a lot of teachers. As a vet, the communication skills has a direct influence on my rate of success. The more the owner understand what is happening with your pet, the best treatment will be done. To get this objective, I change the way I communicate, my vocabular, even my accent. You are the only one that I've seen in all those years that is touching this point with professionalism and high quality information. Don't be upset. Few will understand. I'm privileged to have access to your classes. Thank you very much.
A cada 💯 kilometros que andamos já da pra notar diferença s grandes em como as pessoas falam. Pra isso já criaram as legendas. Você explicou muito bem. 👍
You have a gift! The ability to see the beauty of the language and be so passionate about it to be able to comunicate it and inspire people to learn (I'm one of these people)! Answer to those people has been a good choice but don't loose your confidence on your (great) job for those comments!
Here's another example of standard English: "Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote/The droȝte of March hath perced to the roote/And bathed every veyne in swich licour,/Of which vertu engendred is the flour;" It was written by a highly intelligent, highly educated Englishman between 1387 and 1400 (Chaucer). Here's another example: "Hwæt. We Gardena in geardagum,/þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon,/hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon." from the 8th century. Even the standard English I was taught in school in the 1960s is not the same as standard English in 2019. Languages evolve constantly.
As a brazilian 47 years old woman who is trying to learn English, this is my opinion: doesn't matter which accent you get, the most important thing is, always keep learning the polite way to talk with people, in your native language or not. Use your leaning to communicate with people, not to offend them.
You're just perfect. I want to tell you about my story. I grow up in turkey and I have lived in the middle region of this country for 20 years. (My native lang. is turkish) My turkish was good but actually has a little bit of accent that I never realize when I speak, but my accent was still not just like the other people around me, I wasnt completely like them and everytime when I met someone, he said "you're not like from here" . And then I moved to west region of turkey for university and there, people said that my turkish is clear but my accent was not like theirs,it's middle region if turkey accent. So both of these cities I felt really odd man out and tried to change my pronounciation, I wasn't neither one of them and also like both of them. unfortunately I was ashamed of it. But eventually, you remind me of that accents, people and everything is unique and it's the beauty of it. Thank you
I have known that since I started learning English. One day my friend told me that if I learned British English, I would not understand American English. So I asked how come British people can understand American people 😎 And it's true that lots of people speak incorrectly in their own languages especially at home, with close friends, in informal situations. And what about movies? There's very often used incorrect English. Isn't it?
The point of view of the first video is fantastic... the second video is more fantastic, cos some people gave you the opportunity to teach them about prejudice and bigotry. Congrats, your classes are so good!!
Christian, thank you so much for your amazing ideas and thoughts you kindly share! You always go deep in your vids and I absolutely loved how you took your time and effort to answer those haters respectfully and thoughtfully. I admire your patience and how you go really deep for the answers to questions that many people don't give a second thought and just take for granted. I hope it'll help at least some bigots to stop and think before blindly and arrogantly speaking or writing anything. Cheers!
So sorry about those threats dude. But as you said, the level of ignorance of people nowadays is high; but not only about language stuff, most of the times it's about everything...
i'm watching this video for the second time and i realize that you can look at these ways of speak in a easy way. Listening to musics, in some of it you can check the differents. But i think as a learners we need to learn how speak better... i'm try it, i hope one day i can do it. @edit: I know you are helping out a lot of people around the world, it is incluinding me.
I feel like your channel is more interesting lately to people interested in languages overall, to polyglots, than to just people learning their first English. That's why some people completely missed the point of the video, not all of them know enough how languages work, not all of them are exited about linguistics.
You are an amazing teacher and awesome person my brother! Don not care about this bad people who have attacked you. I think that you were misunderstanded.
I am brazilian and black. I am learning english with your videos, thanks for all . I too don't understand black english, this disturb me to learn english.
And let me say somehing else. I bet many of the people who criticized the other video don't speak any other language other than their native one and don't have any idea of the beauty that is to learn a language (not as a native), the differences in intonation, slang, expressions, grammar and of course, pronunciation and accents between different languages. It's really a life changing experience, especially in terms of culture and how languages are connected to the people that speak them. In other words, pure and simple ignorance :)
Pls don't stop updating videos, I love when the UA-cam notification poops up. You have a way to explain things, always in a very particular way which makes a huge difference in our learning process, even for someone who is fluent already as I am, I'm not showing myself off here, I'm totally being honest because your videos reach any person who loves speaking English and it doesn't matter which "level" you are in, or any other language.. Even you update a video about how to start studying or hacks to learn it and show to the beginningers what they should do by giving your opinion about it. And about the the accents.. I from Brazil and unfortunately there are a lot of prejudice on some brazilian portuguese, each state here has your own accent which is very different to each other and people from São Paulo for example, who has the most "natural" accent which is the most acceptable make fun on someone from Bahia just because the way the one spark, that's awful. It happens all around the world. That's all. Hope see you soon. ❤️
Very good pronunciación ! You are the better teacher Ive ever had along My life . Congratulations You don't just pronunciate very good but explain very good the ideas with excellent examples!
Poetry by teaching your language is what you do Chris In my experience as american (mexican) spanish speaker, i mean not in the way spanish from Spain, i can tell you're right about all variety from your language. I'm a airport worker, so we are used to hear different acents and ways to talk english, and of course, people from country to country talks english in their own way. You talked about africanamerican english, well, once i heard "white couple" speak like that called "black english", but never figure out it was a way to speak wich is suppoused not to match with them. Other day i was in a US city where africanamericans are dominant or more common and if wasn't with my partner wich lived there years back i could had a bad time by asking for a jhonny rocket's hamburguer, i just wasn't able to understand the africanamerican girl there, i guess you get my point. With spanish speakers we have same case: spanish, mexicans, cubans, ticos, colombians, peruveans, chileneans, argentineans, all of us speak "spanish" in our own way and most of us believe we speak spanish correctly Nice video, by the way!
Here we are a few years later and AAVE is the most copied/appropriated language on the internet.. it’s even gotten to the point of people calling it Gen Z language. Now they’re trying to take it away from us. I code switch all the time this video is accurate language is the identity of a race/people or culture. Great video well said 💯
Exploring different flavors, subsets, and dialects of the English language can be done when the non-native English learners have a solid knowledge of standard English.
Hi Christian I like your fervency and your anger for those who don't understand the fundamental things, today, communication. No matters how academic the language is, the key is to get understood and to be able to speak with others. I was brougth up in a very "bourgeoise " family, so , throughout all my chilhood, I have heard a perfect French language around me and I spoke that way. Therefore, I was able to make the difference between social classes just by listening to people talk . And, to be honest, I didn't like the language that low social people speak or these of Canadian or Carabbeans people spoke .Later on, I change my education. It was about time. For many years now, I have appreciated the difference. People who speak Another French than mine. They have given a breath of life into my first language. They make it more powerful, more alive, more colorful. For many years, , I have opened my ear to the rap music..It is mostly African people who sing " rap " in France. Another language, full of poetry. They were able to come up with another French..similar and imprinted of their origins, at the same time. Thanks to them. PS. As my father who has suffer four coronary bypasses said to me : Be careful Christian....Take it easy 🙂
Regarding the subject line of both videos: wouldn't it have been easier to say something like: It depends on why you want to learn English. If your only goal is to pass a standardized test, you should study according to the design of the test. If you are planning to move to a location or do business exclusively at one location, study accordingly. Otherwise, learn from many English speaking sources, teachers, videos, music, etc., both British and American, including many various dialects. The broader the source base you engage in, the greater appreciation for the wide versatility English can provide, and you will have greater skill at wielding the multi-faceted English language.
Nice to hear you, Christian. Nevertheless, the main thing in a person is the soul. A bald, unshaven and not young man can be very charming, kind and pleasant !!! 😀👍🤝
You are dealing with a very important issue , it reminds me of the professor in he movie of '' My Fair Lady'' You know something .I find it really difficult to understand what my Indian doctor says due to his accent
The truth is that AAVE is a sociolect : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociolect Therefore it's a linguistic variation. It depends not only on the social group (Black community) but also on the region where people use it. AAVE is also a regiolect. Its variation depends on the region (id est the city : NY, LA, Houston or Atlanta) where people do the AAVE accent and use the AAVE vocabulary.
After seeing so much hate and ignorance about my last video about AAVE/black English, here are some more hard truths for anyone who doesn't realise the depth of their own prejudice.

Support your freedom of speech. There's too much political correctness.

Just try don't worry about it. You do so great work for everyone who want to learn English from a normal teacher. Have a nice day.
This guy is not only an English teacher, but also an linguist and educator. This channel is deep and I love it.
"People hearing without listening. People talking without speaking..." Thank you Christian for sharing your thoughts about language with us. It's really interesting.
You are a genius.World would be a better place with more people like you.

Por casualidad descubrí tu canal, me gusta, enhorabuena!.
I understand you very well
As a brazilian 47 years old woman who is trying to learn English, this is my opinion: doesn't matter which accent you get, the most important thing is, always keep learning the polite way to talk with people, in your native language or not. Use your leaning to communicate with people, not to offend them.

But eventually, you remind me of that accents, people and everything is unique and it's the beauty of it. Thank you
Wonderful Guru English teacher
I have known that since I started learning English. One day my friend told me that if I learned British English, I would not understand American English. So I asked how come British people can understand American people 😎
And it's true that lots of people speak incorrectly in their own languages especially at home, with close friends, in informal situations.
And what about movies? There's very often used incorrect English. Isn't it?
Fantastic answer to bigotry, especially the third part of the video!
You are one of the best teacher that I've known in my life whit great accent ,from Persia
I am learning so much from your videos, thank you for your light and kind heart. 🙏
Your vids are so inspiring, and breaking my stereotypes about cultures and languages. Thnak you for your sharing valuable thought of yours for free!!!
Bravo, teacher! I'm entirely on your side - on the side of sanity.
The point of view of the first video is fantastic... the second video is more fantastic, cos some people gave you the opportunity to teach them about prejudice and bigotry. Congrats, your classes are so good!!
Adoro suas aulas de inglês você é um ótimo professor 😎😎😍
Thanks a lot! I have had the same opinion but now I have learned some good concepts to use in talking about language and "correct language".
You have empathy with your students, and that's great!
I completely agree with you and it was a really good speech that you just gave us there. Well done.
i'm watching this video for the second time and i realize that you can look at these ways of speak in a easy way.
Listening to musics, in some of it you can check the differents.
But i think as a learners we need to learn how speak better...
i'm try it, i hope one day i can do it.
@edit:
I know you are helping out a lot of people around the world, it is incluinding me.
Christian, I love your lessons! :)
Christian, I'm sending lots of love to fight the hatred ♡
I am brazilian and black. I am learning english with your videos, thanks for all . I too don't understand black english, this disturb me to learn english.
And let me say somehing else. I bet many of the people who criticized the other video don't speak any other language other than their native one and don't have any idea of the beauty that is to learn a language (not as a native), the differences in intonation, slang, expressions, grammar and of course, pronunciation and accents between different languages. It's really a life changing experience, especially in terms of culture and how languages are connected to the people that speak them. In other words, pure and simple ignorance :)
Always your videos are the best in all sense,! Congrats to do videos for your UA-cam students!
Well said...I agree with every single point...
Poetry by teaching your language is what you do Chris
In my experience as american (mexican) spanish speaker, i mean not in the way spanish from Spain, i can tell you're right about all variety from your language.
With spanish speakers we have same case: spanish, mexicans, cubans, ticos, colombians, peruveans, chileneans, argentineans, all of us speak "spanish" in our own way and most of us believe we speak spanish correctly
Nice video, by the way!
Cristian is the best!
continue this great work, the problem is hypersensitivity, not language.
No regrets Sir, you are helping us
Lots of love from south italy. Bravo
Singer Sting (the UK) speaks African American when he sings "He don't play for respect", (c) the song "Shape Of My Heart".
Christian, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year. I thank you for all the lessons. Keep on, please!
Excellent song. ...at the end of the video. ..
Here we are a few years later and AAVE is the most copied/appropriated language on the internet.. it’s even gotten to the point of people calling it Gen Z language. Now they’re trying to take it away from us. I code switch all the time this video is accurate language is the identity of a race/people or culture. Great video well said 💯
WOW! I enjoyed watching the video and I like your approach to English language. That's an educational and inspiring video.
Totally agree !!!! thanks for your lessons that also explain many other things, not just the accent !!!!! You are a great !!!! 😀👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
Exploring different flavors, subsets, and dialects of the English language can be done when the non-native English learners have a solid knowledge of standard English.
Thank you, Christian!
Don't take it to heart. You are doing a great job!!
Thank you a lot
Hi Christian
I like your fervency and your anger for those who don't understand the fundamental things, today, communication.
You are a great professor. I watch all your videos.
You're great, Christian!
Thanks a lot for your job! I love to live in English, with your help😀
I learn a lot from you! This time wasn't different - I do love your videos - they're stunning! Greetings from Portugal!
Friday is the best day of the week :)!
It is 🙂
Não deixe seu patrão saber disso kkkkkkkkk
You inspire, great diction, thanks twice
''People who wrote me...'' is the American informal and not recommended way. I 'd use the more formal British English ''wrote to me''
Regarding the subject line of both videos: wouldn't it have been easier to say something like: It depends on why you want to learn English.
Beautiful video with wonderful message at the end
Well said, sir!
Really great teaching,.thank you sir ..
Nice to hear you, Christian. Nevertheless, the main thing in a person is the soul. A bald, unshaven and not young man can be very charming, kind and pleasant !!! 😀👍🤝
This video aims to educate the ignorant. Good job!
Will there be a part 3? Please! You were impeccable
Hi Christian,
Thank you.... I think this is your best video, at least one of the best... 😁
Thanks! Having watched this video I perfectly realized that it would be much better for everyone to stick to the vegetarian diet! Let's do it!
You are a great teacherrrr
