  • Mount Saint Helens Climb in the Snow - Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument. Due to my poor planning at it pertained to the the current trail conditions, my daughter and I were not prepared with the proper footwear. Nevertheless, we tackled this famous mountain to the best of our ability. This was one of six stops on our Washington state National Park trip. Visited: June 12, 2021.

    Mount Saint Helens looks an awesome climb but man talk about differing conditions! That snow looked a real tough call but just goes to show, we are always learning and even the best can get it wrong on occasions. It's never quitting when you are making the sensible call and you have to keep your young lady safe, so well done to you both! Mount Saint Helens will be there for you both next time, cheers Alan

    I’m sorry you didn’t make it, I know that’s really disappointing, especially considering you traveled from across the country. And all that effort for no views. But I’m glad you still tried! And this was a great video! I had a permit for July 5th last year and got snowed out, in July! Crazy! Mt St Helens has such a short window for good weather. There could easily still be snow in July, but by mid August it could easily be so smoky from all the wildfires that you can’t see a thing. You just never know and it’s always a gamble.

    Hi Randy and Natalie, that looks like such an Awesome hike. The views from the top on a clear day must be Spectacular. I love how you always make safety a priority Randy. Randy, Did you camp at Cougar? we did so every year growing up. a very enjoyable video - even if the hike was in the clouds! It’s good to know your limits, and play it safe. • @Gigaamped
    @Gigaamped 3 роки тому

    Randy, you threw me for a loop multiple times in this video! As far as the not having micro spikes (excuse 😜 lol) as long as the steepness has you hiking as opposed to climbing, simply keeping 3 points of contact utilizing your trekking poles _ensures_ safe travel. And really quick tip about the visibility “reason”, anyone can do this, preload a topographic view of the trail in whatever your favorite free navigation app (something like google maps) and if it doesn’t have the dashed line on there then supplement it with a screenshot of it annotated on a map. Bonus tip is your phones GPS works perfectly even when its out of service.
    Best of luck and research of current conditions on your next adventure!

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 роки тому +1

      Excellent and much appreciated advice! Unfortunately only I had the poles and the gym shoes with that incline in the snow just couldn't get the necessary traction. Just started using the app - later in the trip for the first time. That would have been so helpful and a potential game-changer since we had the time even if our pace was slow. Have a super week!

    • @Gigaamped
      @Gigaamped 3 роки тому

      @@AmericasParks Appreciate it, gym shoes are definitely way less traction-y than trail runners. Great to hear!
      I just gotta tell ya, I'm only 26 but I've done crazy hikes in almost every national park in the great American West and it would make my life to hear my kid be the one pushing me harder into exploration of the outdoors. But I realize that's just me because I've put so much of my identity into climbing mountains-nonetheless, blessings to you and your family!
      P.S. if you ever decide to do Mount Whitney via the Mountaineer's Route for a video, I'm always down to guide as a friend because I know that route like the back of my hand and it would make a great video similar to your Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP video

    Never a bad idea turning around when you reach a point like that. Looks like the adventure more than made up for the lack of views.

    Randy, I've never seen poles used as markers. They must be the snow/fog version of cairns, right?

      Exactly! More permanent and taller/more visible (especially when the snow starts to pile up). Take care!

    Do you carry bear spray during your hikes where black and/or grizzly bears are known to live?

      Try to when necessary - but, to be honest, really need to be more consistent.
