The amount of money some of these athletes spend on training is insane. That, the time and dedication put into the sport, they deserve the money.
And most important of all is the country image! On top of that business wise this is one of best marketing stratgey too. Think of all sides of it - winning a medal in the biggest event is a more than a win-win situatuon
Well they do choose this as their career path. Almost everyone who is pursuing a career spends a ton or acquires a debt chasing their career.

Hidilyn Diaz, our Philippines first Olympic gold medalist is now a $1.5 million richer. I hope that the government and the private sponsors will give this prizes to her. Our former silver medalist Onyok Velasco had a sad fate. Not all of his prizes are given to him. He does not have received a land title and a scholarship for kids.
Hidilyn Diaz’ cumulative incentives and rewards are projected to reach up to $2M (P100M), tax free!
In the UK, I believe it is an upgrade from economy class on plane home!
Then fingers crossed that the sport gets funding for the next 4 year cycle to continue training.
A lot of UK athletes have to crowd fund just to train, and get to competitions to qualify and even attend the Olympics.
The most they receive is usually an MBE, and if lucky an invite to commentate for TV, maybe a book deal and chat show appearances.
UK athletes compete for the love of the sport not money, well that is what our government tends to think!
Ouch that's sad 🥇
That's nice that they get an extra incentive
Now I understand why some athletes transfer their allegeance 🤷🏾♀️😌
This is true specially with athletes with dual citizenship. They rather compete on country who gave more reward for a medal. The difference of 200k usd vs 30k usd is huge.

The way they worded the sentence could generate implications that the PH only had its 1st ever medal from the Tokyo Olympics
It's no surprise that Singapore gives the most prize money to their athletes. Their prime minister is the highest paid world leader (over USD$1.6M, and obviously I'm discounting Brunei) with quite a lead in front of the second (the Chief Executive of Hong Kong with over USD$560K), so it makes sense that there athletes would also be the best paid. Even if their athletes actually won the prizes more often, I doubt Singapore would lower the amount.
They should not be taxed as they bring glory and proud moments for mother land🙏
In india Mirabai, the silver medalist was rewarded around 6 million dollars in total.

The new Indian gold medalist In men's Javelin throw will get cash of not less than 110 million INR which is roughly 1.45 mill USD.
Indonesia should be on the list. Every athlete who wins gold will get IDR 5 billion or around USD 350,000 from the country. All for themselves. According to this list, that's the 2nd biggest. Then they also get more money from other people, get houses, free products for life, etc.
In my country Antarctica we give our gold medalist a igloo house couple of polar bears and a lifetime supply of ice blocks

A lot of Olympians are broke. This is kinda BS. They work so hard, just to qualify, and don't get enough even when winning medals. Governments should pay them for participating, and should pay more to those that win medals. Sponsorships for athletes in niche sports may never come. Imagine being an Olympic medalist, but broke. So unfair. I'm just in shock. Why should they even represent their countries if they don't get paid by said countries to participate?
