Thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary channel sir . I honestly I love the content of your channel it’s very informative. I learned from last videos about Elizabeth fry is British Quaker , philanthropist. She was one of chief promoters of prison reform in Europe. She also helped to improve British hospital system and treatment of insane people. Her notable works as she believed prisoners must be treated with kindness, taught female prisoners skills ad reading and sewing so they , could earn money to buy food . She gave babies in prison warm clothes, brought clean bedding for sick people. She also set up places for homeless people. The facts about victorian prisons in general they tended to be damp , unhealthy, insanity, overcrowded. All kinds of prisoners were mixed together ad at cold bath fields , men , women , kids , insane , serious criminals, petty criminals awaiting for trial , debtors . Each prison run by gaoler in his own way , he made up rules . There are slient prisons system intimate we’re forced to do boring repetitive tasks such as passing heavy cannon ball in complete silence. They were slept on hard beds , ate basic food like bread and water. By the end of 19 th century, neither separate or silent system were working.
Amazing how today we have solid answers for why many of the behaviors exhibited by these female prisoners existed. Behavior was so poorly understood in those times, and everything seemed to be attributed to a lack of "goodness" while never taking into account just how horrific and difficult these women's lives outside the prison were. Many *DID* have to steal to survive,, yet rather than look at the overall social/societal issue their thefts were attributed to kleptomania 🤦♀️
Ah yes another FF program with the gent with the great Radio voice..this sounds like a old BBC radio program or in my case here in the states an old NBC/CBS or RKO program and wow the old women's penn..alot of these remind me of some of my kin..most of my kin would have been the sort that went in for stealing bread but never came back but it's crazy how some of the " crimes" are something as simple as stealing food or shawls and boots..crazy some of the stuff these gals could be incarcerated for
its interesting how victorian prisons werent institution of reform as said in the video and yet they clearly were. maybe not in helpful ways, but sending the women off with a bible and prayer book and slacking on inhumane rules because those little kindnesses produced better results were certainly the beginning of reformative sentencing

Great is always Sunday night when we get to travel back in time with FactFeast H.M.P. Brixton is still in operation in this year of 2024
Thank you. Much appreciated!
A mans prison is a bit like a monastery because there's no women. A womans prison is like crazy town.
History brough to life again thanks for all you do to bring to life the voices of the past cheers
Oddly, most of the social offences listed are just a lack of education, situation or money. cause meet effect.
