Music video by J.D. Souther performing You're Only Lonely (audio). (C) 1979 Columbia Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment #JDSouther #YoureOnlyLonely #Vevo
I’m saddened by the lack of press surrounding JD Souther’s death. All I saw was a mention of his death on the ticker this morning on “World News Now.” Mr. Souther wrote so many classic songs and he was inducted into the National Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013. Without him, we wouldn’t have had “New Kid in Town” or “Heartache Tonight” by The Eagles. Linda Ronstadt learned to sing “Blue Bayou” from JD Souther in 1976, which she recorded and took to #3 in 1977. He and Linda were close friends and collaborators. He was also close to Jackson Browne, who sang backup on “You’re Only Lonely.”
I was lucky to grow up in the era where JD Souther, Jackson Browne, Linda Rondstadt, The Eagles, Pure Prairie League, and so many other great songwriters and performers were at the top of the charts.
Simple and pure is a great description. JD was an under the radar singer/songwriter to much. of the fanverse but well known and revered by music insiders. The song is a great legacy.
The garbage they listen to today is pure evil. When is rapping and singing about how to f and rape people is despicable. They sing from the darkness there is No love. Look at award shows they blatantly show who they worship. Certainly is not God or Jesus.

I'll be 69 Oct 1st and doing the same. Sad that so many of the people who have introduced me to so such wonderful music have passed away over the last few years...
RIP JD. This loving homage to the sound of the late, great Roy Orbison was a highlight of the music from my senior year in high school. Thanks for this and all the great tunes.
That's so interesting... before I even read your comment, I was thinking "Yeah, he climbed to Roy Orbison territory on this one!" While J.D.'s writing talents were well known, I feel his voice was VASTLY underappreciated. Thanks for sharing.❤
I saw him at the Ark, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nobody really seemed to know who he was, I looked around at all the people sitting with me and I said, you have no idea what kind of a night we're in for! I was lucky enough to have a few minutes with him, got my copy of Black Rose autographed 😁 He was so kind, and so humble, he seemed surprised that I wanted his autograph! And really stunned when I asked if it would be too much to have a selfie with him! He was like, you want a picture with me? I started reeling off every song I knew that he had written for himself and others so he would know I was a true fan! What a night to remember! Thank you, JD!💖
I am so glad you had the opprtunity to meet him, as TRUE fan.Yyou were very fortunate. It is a shame but he did live a musical life of general obscurity from the masses.
So sorry to hear J. D. passed away. This was my favorite song. He was a great singer and songwriter and I listen to him all the time. Praying for his family during this difficult time. Thanks to J. D. for all the great music.
This is a song that when it comes on the radio I can't help but crank it up and sing along. Absolutely beautiful! RIP JD. You've left a great legacy of songs.
@loradunn2993 Yes, me too, and her SNP has progressed to a debilitating level. I love her and all that she has been. Funny thing... I just saw the movie Purgatory yesterday and didn't realize until it started that JD was in it.
I'm listening in June 2024. I'm a 23 year old living in the body of a 68 year old! I suggest - keep smiling, keep going, keep defiant - and keep listening to quality music like this song!
@gregorythompson1009 • Thank you Gregory , for ur comment..I was actually looking for the " right one " to reply to , after hearing the dreadful news this morning. And while they all played a vital and important part , none more so , than J.D. did himself. At one point when they all converge in Cali , they do so , coming from all over the U.S. . Jackson Browne , being the lone true Southern Californian among the group. But while they were trying out for a house gig , J.D. reluctantly tried out for the band...and while the band as a whole sounded good , it was plain to everyone ( himself included ) , that he wasn't needed. They were all gonna write together anyway, so it was still a " win - win " for everyone concerned. But I tell you now , you will never find a more clearer, distinct, pure and richer voice that any singer ever had, than J.D. Souther...just by listening to this song , you can clearly tell in not only the lyrics, but in the style, pitch of his voice, and overall sound , of just how much influence he has had and still continues to have, on the Eagles..I've ALWAYS loved his high rich voice..some of the best vibrato to me, I've ever heard..I also remember very well when this song first hit the airwaves.. my wife and I , had just welcomed our first son into this world , making us proud parents for the first time... part of the better days AND YESTERYEARS, gone by.. so sadly 😥 missed , I might add.......remember everyone, these comments and opinions are solely mine and mine alone. They are made IMHO...many blessings to you 🙏 all..stay safe 🙏 and tc everyone...hagd 😊😊
Genius! This song though, gives me goose bumps. I'm 72 , I never forget classics, you know Mozart would have loved this he loved sweet songs and emotional music , he never heard any of the classics the 20th century gave us, he would love it, and hell didn't we get spoiled !
Don and Glenn did collaborate on the writing of "New Kid in Town" But I think that song screams J D Souther and is my number 1 favorite song by the Eagles.
Tom, my brother Bob told me age is just a number and the speed limits are just suggestions. He introduced me to good music when I was 6 and he was 15. He would have turned 77 this coming March. Rock on!
Was 19 1/2 when i recorded this song Dec.79 on a big Ghettoblaster in an intercitytrain near Hamburg on route back home, few hours earlier i had completed my military base training (Green Navy/marinestyle), after i heard it it was my favorite song, sadly i lent the tape months later to a comrade and never get it back, heard it only once since then in mid 80. 2 years ago i found it here on YT when i heard it first time after nearly 40 years i was so happy and every time i hear it i feel the same Happiness/have the same feelings like back then when i was 19/20. Stay healthy, happy and inside young folks.

In fact, Easter night 2010 💔💔💔 My wife survived. 💖🙏🙏🙏 I’m a saved man who was once a radical libral. My mom’s death on Easter never impacted my deep love for Jesus Christ. This song, “When You’re Only Lonely” is my dedication song of her facing cancer. It’s a battle only a diagnosed person comprehends They can feel so alone. Fear and sorrow can draw us so close to God; naked of pride. sincere in love. 🙏💖
I just found out that JD passed away. I'm so sad. He had such a beautiful voice. This song is important to me. I was extremely depressed & lonely in my 20s. Many, many times I considered suicide. Then this song came out & I listened to it endlessly. I don't think it's an exaggeration that he saved my life with this song. Thank you JD.
He was a special cat......He could have sold this song to Linda Ronstadt and made plenty of money from it. He wrote this years before and it was his and it was perfect. God Bless him, his music and his legacy.
Souther dated Ronstadt in the 1970s and co-produced her "Don't Cry Now" album. He also wrote songs for several of her multi-platinum albums, including "Faithless Love" from Heart Like a Wheel and "White Rhythm and Blues" on Living in the USA. He recorded other duets with Ronstadt, including "Prisoner in Disguise", "Sometimes You Can't Win", and "Hearts Against the Wind", which was featured in the 1980 film "Urban Cowboy".
You are right. There are no real writers now. This song is about so much: loneliness, tenderness, the stuff we sometimes do to assuage loneliness. We are talking real, human, sometimes difficult human emotion. Now we do crap (sorry rap)
Building somewhat upon the previous comment, I'm 81 now, and I agree with the comment. I recalled the song alright but couldn't have named the year of popularity, it truly was the age of truly great music! My memory is now fading some and I couldn't have told you the year it was released! Like the others below, I miss those times but being a born-again Christian, I'm looking forward to much better times in my future! God Bless y'all! d.o'd.
JD Southern is way more important to the power of 70's, or Classic Rock, than most people realize. Great writer, and obviously, he sang well enough to touch yer heart!
He lived in the same apartment building as the Eagles before they made it big. Ho co wrote several of their sons and later produced some of their albums.
I only recently found this song, and it has been on repeat for about the last week or so. One of my new favorites. I am a big Eagles fan but only just recently dove into JD Souther's songwriting, which is absolutely phenomenal. I was listening to his music today and thinking about how I could manage to get a ticket to one of his concerts near me in November when I read that he had passed away earlier today. RIP JD and may your songs live on forever!
So sad to hear of J.D. Southers passing. This man was a giant in the music industry .He is respected by all who were in the business. His music takes me to the best years of my life. Thank you J.D. for giving me something to hold on to in my youth.

I don't know either how people can not love this song... It really is one of the most beautiful songs on YT.... The lyrics to this song makes me cry... Not thumb this song down... I am wondering what kind of songs are they into...I just can't imagine...
They don't like music, Cynthia: they prefer chanting, mantra, songs for stupid people; -OR- they've never lost a love, never longed for long, never been sentimental or empathic. Like you, I can't imagine being that lost.
You now that you are right Cynthia I just had time to read all of the posts to this song I am really lonely now that my wife of 31 years is gone. I do have three wonderful a great kids and three grandchildren My wife died on Mothers day 2017 and My Father two days after. talking about Lonely the people in this world now I can't really understand really selfish I'm glad but I saw your post thank you God bless you
Charles I am very sorry for your losses. I lost my eldest sister and much-loved aunt within days of one another and mum 10 months later and that was bad enough. To lose your beloved wife of 31 years and then your father 2 days later is grief piled upon grief so I can understand your loneliness. Modern society is weird. We seem to be too busy staring at phones to reach out to one another but I am sure there are people out there who really wish you well.
@@charliemanning4296 Yes he did!!! He turned me onto all kinds of older music from classic rock to Bluegrass to motown. He also taught me to always be open to new music and to never be ashamed of the music I like. Probably the only good thing he ever did for me.
This song caught my attention as a kid and it really struck a chord with me as I got older. Now, it's a masterpiece of songwriting and sound I'll continue to cherish. Rest In Peace J.D. Souther, may your memory and your music be a blessing to all 🙏
I don’t know how anyone can give a thumbs down to this song either, it’s such a beautiful song both lyrics and melody and JD Souther has the perfect voice for this song. I love it.

I'll be 69 Oct 1st and doing the same. Sad that so many of the people who have introduced me to so such wonderful music have passed away over the last few years...
Goodbye and Godspeed, Mr. Souther. Rest in peace.❤
RIP JD. This loving homage to the sound of the late, great Roy Orbison was a highlight of the music from my senior year in high school. Thanks for this and all the great tunes.
❤
That's so interesting... before I even read your comment, I was thinking "Yeah, he climbed to Roy Orbison territory on this one!" While J.D.'s writing talents were well known, I feel his voice was VASTLY underappreciated. Thanks for sharing.❤
@@loradunn2993 If I understand correctly, Orbison was something of an idol to JD -- so it makes sense he would do a song in tribute.
His voice is smooth, and so sexy. I'm so lucky to have grown up from the 60's and 70's & 80's I got to listen to the best
I'm 72 and my late husband could dance all night to this song ❤️ you Wayne.
So envious! I used to go to The Ark for many years but not since the pandemic but never knew he played there. Darn!
Beautiful!
Lucky you! ☺️ 🎶❤
You're so lucky. Love this song....and yes, I'm lonely
So sorry to hear J. D. passed away. This was my favorite song. He was a great singer and songwriter and I listen to him all the time. Praying for his family during this difficult time. Thanks to J. D. for all the great music.
One of my all time favorite songs as well.
I'm 65 and in tears to hear of his passing. Truly a beautiful song and golden voice. A fantastic human being too ❤❤❤
This is a song that when it comes on the radio I can't help but crank it up and sing along. Absolutely beautiful! RIP JD. You've left a great legacy of songs.
Rest in peace, John David. I know the Laurel Canyon gang will really miss you, especially Linda. Your music lives on.
I worry for her over this...they were so entwined their whole adult lives.
Exactly
Kev, keep living like you're living - life is much better that way!
Well said.
The world is a little lonelier today… RIP
Wow 😢❤
lot of you children do NOT understand if not for JD SOUTHER AND JACKSON BROWNE THE EAGLES WOULD NOT BEEN ABLE TO FLY SO HIGH.
I'm so glad that he kept this one for himself.

J. D. Is probably the most underrated song writer of all time. He even wrote New Kid in Town. Sung by The Eagles
It was not wholey written by him...... It's was a collaboration between Don, Frey and him.....
One of the few times I agree with the term underrated. You are absolutely correct what an exceptional artist JD is!
It's a good song definitely ripped off Orbison
It's December 16, 2020 - I standing in the shower and this great song comes into my old mind....I think I'm still OK at 74. Thank J. D Souther.
Me too Tom. I'm 66 and still listening to our great music.
Tom. 60 and right with you guys!
Grew up in Africa and my late dad played this in the early nineties. I am now 39 and this brings me great memories.
RIP brother. Your music has always been a big help.
My husband and I danced a lot to this song. Beautifully written. Now he's gone , but he comes back to me in this song.

God Bless all you guys that are listening to this song and all the good memories that we all had. I miss this time long ago.
My wife was shocked - I was devastated to hear, she was diagnosed with endometrial uterine cancer stage 3. I had lost my mom just 2 months after she was diagnosed with small cell carcinoma in February 2010. My mom died that April . In fact, Easter night 2010 💔💔💔
My wife survived. 💖🙏🙏🙏

One of the most overlooked vocal talents ever! What a voice.... thank you sir! God bless!
So true. But many dead are underrated because they didn't play the game
He did plenty of back-up for quite a few big-name singers - Eagles, Ronstadt, western stars - and wrote/collaborated on quite a few hits for others.
Voice similar to the great Roy Orbison. Impressive for certain.
He actually turned down the chance to join the eagles with randy miessner & said he wanted to create his own journey ....legend
He was called the Unknown Eagle.@@crosslink1493

I'm glad JD got the eagles to do the backup vocals for this song. It's usually him giving them something. At least this time it was a two way street.

I always felt that it was a love song.
JD is a great song writer also!! I’m 75 and I love this song as much as when I first heard it!!
I'm 62. About 40 years ago, my girlfriend and I went to his concert in Tokyo. Now she is my wife. Full of memories!
Had to come and listen to this again after hearing the sad news. Such a beautiful song.
Me too
I love this song it brings back so many good memories for a guy that's 75.
I"M the same age ....Fella and memories are all we got STAY Well
R.I.P. JD Souther. One of my favorite songs. Extraordinary talent.
He was a special cat......He could have sold this song to Linda Ronstadt and made plenty of money from it. He wrote this years before and it was his and it was perfect. God Bless him, his music and his legacy.
I can't get that one out of my head because it's true
Souther dated Ronstadt in the 1970s and co-produced her "Don't Cry Now" album. He also wrote songs for several of her multi-platinum albums, including "Faithless Love" from Heart Like a Wheel and "White Rhythm and Blues" on Living in the USA. He recorded other duets with Ronstadt, including "Prisoner in Disguise", "Sometimes You Can't Win", and "Hearts Against the Wind", which was featured in the 1980 film "Urban Cowboy".
the young men then heard their own hearts...i am 83 and these songs still move my heart heavily! they heard God.....
We will never have music like this ever again...
You got that right.
Fact#
You are right. There are no real writers now. This song is about so much: loneliness, tenderness, the stuff we sometimes do to assuage loneliness. We are talking real, human, sometimes difficult human emotion. Now we do crap (sorry rap)
You are so right, nice and mellow.
Sadly true
Building somewhat upon the previous comment, I'm 81 now, and I agree with the comment. I recalled the song alright but couldn't have named the year of popularity, it truly was the age of truly great music! My memory is now fading some and I couldn't have told you the year it was released! Like the others below, I miss those times but being a born-again Christian, I'm looking forward to much better times in my future!
God Bless y'all!

JD Southern is way more important to the power of 70's, or Classic Rock, than most people realize. Great writer, and obviously, he sang well enough to touch yer heart!
He's one of those guys who wrote more songs than people realize, because everybody covered them.

God bless you Charles. I hope the love that you shared with your wife and father will pull you through the toughest times.
