Don't like the idea at all , I thought the 3 test series in June /July was outstanding
But SA Springboks were rested in Feb, which meant the Sharks were without key players for key games for instance.
They played ulster during the six nations at home and couldn’t beat them.
@@Nieljoyceniel nope, Sharks fan here. We have the most current Springboks and they were all not available for the Ulster game.
@@Nieljoycenielyeah original game was supposed to have boks playing but when rescheduled it was during the rest period so had no boks
not sure how it enhances teams outside the big 10. Ok so 2 teams get in but will there really be demotion if a 'big' team ends up at the bottom? I guess time will tell. It also takes away a bit of prestige from the world cup
I think it's ridiculous. But the likes of Molloy love this stuff..
Who cares, its an excellent idea to have the best teams in the world play each other more often. When England plays India at cricket who cares what the Dutch are doing?
@joedennehy386 player welfare for one, it's not soccer. Too few teams play at the highest level, more money needs to go to the second tier. Thirdly, it's essentially a mini world cup, so that tournament is devalued
@@patman142 The likes of Joe only think in abstract and money terms. They dont love the sport in the same way.
Just hear to rewatch after South Africa won the 2023 Rugby World Cup🤣
Matt is bang on about the All Blacks the most dangerous side in history especially under pressure its unusual for him to give NZ credit
Just in case you have not heard it before 😂 over the last 25 years Matt planned for the brumbies 😮
Not sure, maybe I'm just a grumpy old man at this stage, but I think this will detract from the world Cup and we loose those 3 test tours that have brought so much drama over the years
11:52 well the 6 nations needs to be open to promotion and demotion. As in, "the winner of the European rugby championship plays the wooden spoon in the 6 nations, in a playoff a 1 or 3 game series... it dose the 6 nations teams no good having a closed shop.
Always enjoy listening to Matt
I agree that from a purely commercial perspective giving the US along with Japan the 2 invitational places makes a lot of sense with RWC2031 in the US. Could be a huge change for the game if a big US sponsor saw the potential of Rugby in the US.
I just don't see the US bringing much to Rugby in the near term,. It comes down to money. You would need the same sort of money being spent in NFL (billions) to even capture an audience. The competition of the NFL and other American sports just won't allow rugby (a foreign sport) to take their viewers. eg. MRL is a division 2 pro league currently played in the NFL/NBA off season...(but is a step in the right direction). The reason why Women's Soccer in the US is successful is because they don't play NFL...Until there is a school/college program and the allure of highly paid professionalism at the end of it its always going to be 2nd tier and full of late developers that don't make it in the big American sports, (mainly NFL). Rugby is not cultural in the US , like Soccer (men's) and despite all the money thrown around in Men's Soccer they are still a 2nd tier nation with little viewership. Rugby in the US will only happen with a Billionaire tv tycoon bending it imo. I do wonder why Rugby has to be more commercial or needs 'more' viewers than it already has. The fact English & Australian clubs cannot fill their grounds but Ireland and French club teams have full stadiums speaks to the management and greed of those unions/pro league owners.
Giving it to the US is a massive slap in the face to numerous countries. The US still has little rugby culture to speak of, has not in any , way, shape or form earned that place as their rugby remains sub par at best. Their world cup record is a joke, they have never beaten a tier 1 nation in a competitive (WC or tournament) game, and even failed to beat Chile ......a country with significantly fewer players and significantly less resources.....and could not qualify for the WC despite their region being a weak one. If World Rugby gives the US that place it is insulting and ridiculous. It's world rugby literally chasing money over and above anything else. Certainly not based on merit or achievement. Why on earth should the US be given such special privaleges? Never mind that it is even more ridiculous because the US team would get consistently hammered given their 100% non tier 1 ability.
Also, I would argue that World Rugby is chasing windmills. The US is a big sports market obviously. And a very lucrative one. But it is also a highly saturated market where a contact sport is already entirely ingrained in the culture, pays far better, and is popular with them. The idea that rugby is going to somehow compete and become a popular sport in the US is a big gamble. Both because the Americans like to win and dominate. And they are very very far away from being able to do any such thing. And they just generally like their own stuff. Good grief man.....even the worlds most popular sport Soccer has struggled to gain popularity in the US after almost 30 years of a pro league (and that is without any similar sport existing in the US). It still sits well below the popularity of all American sports, and they have little to show for 30 years of professionalism and billions of Dollars poured into it. Has the US achieved any great results in Soccer? They have improved certainly....but certainly are not a tier 1 country nor in any danger of challenging for the WC. So we don't have any compelling reasons to believe that rugby is going to succeed where Soccer has not exactly done so. Especially having to compete against an already deeply ingrained contact sport.
And that is without even getting into the problem that World Rugby is also ignoring and slighting numerous other countries who are far further along in their development (such as Georgia) or where there is far greater potential to grow the game such as India and China where no contact sport of any type is established and the markets are still new to pro sports.
The US cant even win their main games like mens baseball and basketball they aren't the world champions in either of them
@@Trajan2401 that's also true. Japan and Cuba routinely beat them in baseball. And in American football they call themselves "world champions" despite no one else playing the sport 🤣🤣🤣.
@@Sabundy hahaha yeah bang on the Netherlands won the baseball world cup and Japan won the baseball classic and Spain are the current world cup holders in basketball and as you say they're only world champions in American football because no one else cares about or plays that game totally overrated as a sporting nation
It's a double-edged sword though this World League despite more games for tier 2 nations who unfortunately are locked out until promo-relegation in 2030.
It's a very valid point regarding SA players. You may not be aware but players here in SA players are only allowed to play 33 games a year, across all competitions, including internationals. So that is possibly one way that SARU is trying to manage player welfare.
How are they playing 33 matches.?
@@Andrew-fy9wu Urc - 18 games + knockouts, champions/ challengers cup - 4 games + knockouts, currie cup - 14 games + knockouts, roughly 10-12 international games per year
@@MatthewLoder Then all countries are playing that much.
@@Andrew-fy9wu not really, it’s a competition more than others
@@MatthewLoder European players play internationals, club matches, cup matches, playoff matches, European Cup matches.
The spring bok players were rested mid URC season so that is not the case that they have been playing 15 months straight
No they were not, they played less to manage the load. Springboks play the most rugby out of all nations our players are heavily managed. They need family time and rest
@@RicksPhatPharm-vw2lbyes they were 😂 had 2 months off
@manueldumont3709 great idea 🙌🏻🤣
The Springboks had time off during the six nations, and the model is to do this going forward
No, they didn't. They played in the URC.
@wlk2408 No, they did not. A group of sprinbok players were rested during the 6 nations. If you dont belive me please go back and check
@MrBigcharl No mate, they played. There was a handful that played less. To compare that to all time, the European internationals get off during rugby championship, which is not even close to the same. European international players have a much bigger break.
@@wlk2408you’re joking 🤣 sharks had 7/8 springbok players not playing for 2 months
@@MatthewLoder Who would that be? Do you think the Springboks only have Sharks players?
Cricket..... High drama? 😂😂😂 I went to cricket when I was in New Zealand and the only drama I experienced was getting served pints.
I think if you watched the sport and were into it, like any sport, you'd get the drama reference.
I don't, so I'd be the same. Drama at the bar for me too. Probably at the price.
Maybe you should have spent your time doing something you are interested in.
@@clemfandango619 I was, hanging with friends drinking and laughing.
@@LeMerchwell they say most Americans go to NFL games not for the game but for the entertainment and beer i could believe that such a boring stop start game that drags on for hours
@@RazorMouth Cricket is a serious sport, no laughing next time.
This plan is once again throwing Tier 2 nations like Georgia under the bus. Either we try to grow the game like football or coral it into just a top 10 teams like cricket. I’d rather the former.
Should be promotion and relagation regarding the 6 nations
Can't agree with you on the kiwi's, thinking they've gone backwards even since the Irish series, if France aren't super nervous in the 1st game, I can't see anything but a double digit win
agree,
Disagree, they are a much better team now than during the Irish series. 4 new mobile ball playing props have emerged since the Irish series that will bring a new dimension to their game. None of the old deadwood are left in the propping ranks. Add in a new back 3, a better centre pairing and most importantly the additions of Joe Schmidt and Jase Ryan to the coaching ranks makes them a very different beast this year.
People judging them based on that Irish series and some of the games last year are in for a rude shock.
@@alanwright3716yes they're living in the past the AB side at the world cup will be far better and different than the average sides they played almost half the team they've never ever played against
Would rather have the club competition that had been planned.
Did Matt just say that a few posh people grumbling at players is the same as Millwall fans in the 80s fighting in the streets and hurling racial abuse at players and fans? Talk about manufactured drama.
Molloy and OTB love the England bashing any way they can push it..
To be fair I was disgruntled by the headline and ready to accuse M. Williams of habitual bok-bashing but then heard him speak of our unfair DISadvantage. The world has truly gone mad.
No disadvantage.

Rugby is ruled by private finance who have no interest in the welfare of the game.
You are wrong on soccer struggling to break into US market it's now the forth biggest sport in USA and projected to overtake baseball. If you watch MLS attendance is bigger than premiership rugby,SR and URC
@@gunner4life568maybe but its still not one of the US main sports i suspect a lot of soccer fans in the US are woman and are more into womans soccer since they are the world champs but not so much into mens soccer as for your attendance comparison bear in mind the US have far more people than those rugby nations combined so you would expect decent crowds.Ive also heard Americans saying that if it wasn't for the Hispanics and Mexicans soccer would be dead in the US
@@Trajan2401 that is not true the MLS attendance is higher than the women's leagues in fact the average attendance is above 20k in MLS while NWSL is below 10k and majority of the attendees are men .The big population is irrelevant when it comes to attendance NZ used to have full stadia so is SA but sadly no more . Why not simply have a RWC every 2 years. Give more teams the chance of playing top tier nations more regularly.
it's called diluting ...world cup means only the best go not some 3rd tier nation that will have 100pts put past them
Nah devalues the world cup
Rugby cannot continue to ignore Amer, they have leagues in place and are a massive market. It's not as if they need to code switch they have the talent and are sleeping giants. Everyone knows it
Matt, there is no controversy relating to Laporte's crimes.
100% South Africa will end up playing in the six or seven nations just a matter of time. Can not wait to see this guy's face when that is announced hahahaha
Well at least SA will have more of a chance of winning something unlike the RC and SR yes that's the answer run away to inferior comps 😂
@Trajan SA got a raw deal out of SR, considering all SANZAAR funding came from South Africa and it's viewers. We travelled way more and the NZ constantly changing rules and draws with terrible traveling for Boks made it a terrible deal.
South Africa are just as good with far bigger markets than what NZ offer up. We know the British coddled NZ as they were always seeking a global game, NZ cannot cry now. See in you the WC mate, i hope you guys don't choke against France or Ireland 🤣
Almost 8 minutes about cricket??? For real??? Edit those minutes and put them in a cricket video.
The rugby nations championship, if that's what they are going to call it, is a ridiculous idea. Talk about ring fencing. How's that going to grow the game globally?
That's like asking how the European championship in football grows the game. It's a dumb question lad
13:11 I thought the plan was to have it every year except WC years?
not on Lions years either
This new comp sounds like it will take away from the world cup. Basically a watered down version.
Algerians could have a major say in this RWC in France.
I predict a riot!
Keep politics out of sport
@@Trajan2401 I agree but sadly politics is inextricably connected with sport as is commerce. Just like the in the days of Rome. Give the peasants bread and circuses and nobody will complain.
Any hint of impartiality on the cricket fellas??? hahaha
This NEW tournament is about ONE thing, and One reason. NZ to make more money! That's all.
Awesome 👏
Brilliant, you discovered our secret plot, we've hypnotised the world to do our bidding, crikey we're clever
Matt is constant anti-bok whinger. Hope he caught the game this evening lol
disagree the La Rochelle game was at a whole higher level that the Chiefs/ Cru game, doubts NZ will reach the quarters
The Crusaders snd Chiefs would destroy those inferior NH clubs 😂
@@peter636 they just wouldn't. Ireland have beaten New Zealand 4 times in over a 100 years, never got past a rwc 1/4 final. Leinster didn't win anything and you think they'd beat the 7 tine champs? You're delusional.
SA having to play NH club rugby and SH internationals was the whole reasoning behind them wanting to join the 6 nations. The springboks haven't had a break since the lions series in 2021!
And by the way the travel will affect SA in 6 nations way more than anyone else... It would be one game in SA and all the rest in Europe. This channel's attitude is so privileged. Look what just happened to the West Indies cricket team - SA doesn't have an economy to compete with 1st world tier one nations. Are you that selfish that you would push them off the ledge instead of reaching out a helping hand?
You are right, SA does not have an economy to compete with 1st tier nations but still won 3 world cups. How many worlds cups did those 1st world nations won?
We are delighted to keep playing the saffers, and they play home and away just as we kiwis do.
I guess everyone needs a participation trophy these days.. even professional sports teams 😂😂 spirit of the game 😂 I’ve never heard such twaddle
If SA are at a disadvantage it's of their own making, chasing the money.
existential...
🤮💩🤧
@asnieres32
Do you have good reasons for ignoring so many well documented facts?
Matt Williams sharing his opinions on cricket, even less interesting than his one eyed opinions on Rugby.
If the kiwis were to loose the opening match against France that i believe will set the tone for the kiwis and i tell you they are nervous about the opening match
Of course we are nervous, but not as nervous as the French. We've never lost a pool match, and France choked in the opening match of the last rwc they hosted
@@joedennehy386 this time its gonna be a total different ball game

This waters down the World Cup! I don’t like it
Money men won - kak idea
Unfair disadvantage? South Africa knew full well what they were getting in for playing teams on the other side of the planet. It's hardly unfair
Disrespectful of the Aussie cricket team. Go way they are a joke went against the spirit of the game end of. England wouldn’t of done that
Englands fault in the first place for thinking they were that great that they could declare early that's where it went downhill for England and im not Australian either
Typical English hipocrisy 😂😂😂
If it’s such a bad rule maybe change it , why have it there if it’s against the spirit .
How can it be disrespectful if it is in the laws of the game, respect the laws and then there is no problem.
England did it to de grand home the year before you muppet, and Bairstow tried to do it in this ashes series.
