THIS IS EXACTLLY WHY I PUT 500 BUCKS INTO MY 96 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 4X4 5.2LITER ENGINE WITH THE A500 TRANS WITH THE 249J TRANSFER CASE. I FIXED ALL THE POTENTAL ENGINE LEAKS BY REMOVING ALL THE OLD GASKETS AND TIMING CHAIN AND GASKETS OIL PAN GASKET TOO. BOTH MAIN SEALS AT SAME TIME IN THE CRANK BEARINGS. NOW THE ONLY THING COULD HAPPEN IS A THROWN ROD. I REBUILT MY TRANSMISSION 10K MILES AGO. IT USES ABOUT HALF A QUART OF OIL PER 4000 MILE OIL CHANGE SO ITS PREETY GOOD INTERNALLY. JUST A TINY BIT OF RING OR CYLINDER WEAR BUT WHO CARES. MY POINT IS ITS WORTH FIXING THE OLDER MODEL JEEPS BUT NOT NEWER SHITY ONES OR ANYTHING NEW TODAY THEY ALL SUCK AND MOSTLY PLASTIC PIPING. I am a tech (heavy line)for a local Chevy dealer, and the new style engine is completely different, the older 5.3, 6.0, trucks with cylinder deactivation, where only 4 cylinder cut off. Now the new trucks have all cylinder deactivation, which the top of the block is machined different for this, I find it odd how lifter failure has not been listed in any video I’ve seen, and it’s a real and huge problem. I would not recommend the new style Chevy/gmc full size with a 5.3 (L84) at all. I’ve worked for Chevy for a long time and have always been a fan, but the new engine is very disappointing. I’m not trolling, just giving my input from where I see the truck

We bought a 2016 gmc Denali. For the wife. It looked great and she liked the ride. We had the 6.2 motor. Paid a bit but was very impressed with it initially. Truck was used for running kids around for hockey and such. Very easy life lol. It all started at around 25000 Kim’s. we hit the remote start and the seat caught on fire. The warmer would not shut off burnt seat gave a great smell to the truck. Around this time we noticed a lot of paint chips. Stopped into dealer. It’s the dirt roads they said hmmmm truck has never been on a dirt road. Oh they said and suggested a $1000 dollar 3m coating. Did we not just pay $70000. At this point the 8 speed transmission had been put in learner mode 3 times. Because it never shifted right. And it never would. There were more recalls than I can remember this morning. Power steering. Brakes. They took out the slider rear window because it was a fire hazard lol. The motor developed a load tick. It was a bent valve road. $5500 repair. About this time all 4 electromagnetic shocks went. They are $3500 here in the frozen north. There was so much I can’t remember. My wife bought a new Honda CRV and loves it. I cannot tell you how financial stress and family stress this truck caused. That was our first GMC. The dealer and GM were like snake oil salesman saying anything and screw you. I have owned a lot of vehicles and this was the worst. If you cannot build and sell $70000 dollar truck and look after your clients you will be bankrupt AGAIN. I know of a lot of people who have had the same experience. The worst quality I have ever seen. Run away. Gm deserves to perish it’s an old tired dinosaur that needs to go.

Yeah I hear you, I worked as a tech at a GM dealer from 2014- 2018 and the gas trucks had nothing but issues. In cold climates like we have in Canada the direct injected V8’s actually overfuel so bad on cold starts that the engine oil gets badly diluted with gas... bad enough that it causes loss of oil pressure quite often.

Unfortunately i believe youre correct. I say unfortunately because i dont see it ending. The only time electronics made a vehicle more reliable is when they got rid of mechanical points. Outside of that, I really don't see electronics improving the reliability at all. There's way too many sensors and way too many actuators controlling simple functions that should be done by mechanical levers. I wish you can go back in time when we had cars like the old Toyotas with the 20R and the five speed. Or a small block 350 made it to a 700R4. We should have stopped at basic throttle body EFI. And then jumped to electric vehicles. The other crap we're just Band-Aids that are always falling off.

Don't read too much into that. Some friction parts, planetary gearsets, and sprags can be identical but the case, valve body, and torque converters would likely be from each company's in house or usual supplies. There is huge savings by development of those first pieces mentioned and by larger scale components purchase.

    • @jimmyaber5920
      @jimmyaber5920 3 роки тому +5

The surveys do a poor job of details. The questions and the customer knowledge can treat a slow gear engagement first time in the morning as the same as quit pulling and wouldn't move 200 miles from the house. Problems with touchscreens and pairing cellphones are far far larger problems than real issues with drivetrain in vehicles in the last 10 years.

I finally lost all faith in GM when their lawyers concocted the defense of “design” vs “manufacturing” defects when defending the 8-speed issues. Basically they’re saying that because the 8-speed problems stem from a design issue and the warranty states that it covers manufacturing defects, they aren’t really responsible for fixing the problem for free. They knew they were a problem and still installed them in their trucks. They knew they had lifter issues but they never seemed to be interested in (or failed miserably at) making improvements. The prices keep going up, though. No thanks.

He gets the truck back and it runs fine for a day and it’s back to slipping. Brings it back and the SAME thing happens again, only this time he accelerates to get highway speed and we hear a clunk* and the transmission is leaking down the highway. Although I seem to remember so many people using CR as the reason to buy/ not to buy certain vehicles, CR continues to have bias in their reporting. For instance, over the years, Honda has had several rounds of transmission failures(even the current ZF 9spd), yet they rate them as high on reliability. Toyota literally had rusting frames on trucks and oil sludge concerns with their V6s, and they too remain solidly highly recommended. To your point on the Chevy, it is widely known that the 8spd is the trans to largely avoid, not due to failure but mostly odd shift feel and quality. But the HDs?? Up until very recently, they used Allison-made(not branded/licensed) which were virtually bulletproof, so their reporting remains very mixed on how they reach their results.

While Honda overall is higher than most in average reliability, they haven't been Toyota reliable for years. If you actually read their ratings, you'll see that some Hondas are only average reliability. Honda Accord goes from average to above average depending on the year as they find and fix problems. The transmission problems did lower their reliability ratings back over a decade ago. Suburu has also gone down. While also still more reliable than average, they are way behind Toyota.
Also, remember, their is a difference between their rating of the car as it functions, and it's reliability rating. There are some cars they really like, but don't recommend because of the reliability rating, and ones they find mediocre(but not bad) that they recommend because of it's reliability.
And, of course, Toyotas aren't perfect. They are just better than everyone else, on average, year after year. Nothing is guaranteed, they are merely predicting based on statistics. Even Toyota throws out the occasional lemon.

I’m a mechanic at a Toyota dealer BUT two good friends own independent shops. Here’s the problem with Consumer Reports, they don’t do specific trim levels and power trains, they just group them all together. GM truck trans issue is the 6 speed, it’s freakin awful but the 8 speed is bulletproof. The GM/Ford codeveloped 10 speed is also bulletproof except in the Fords where they have a software issue. Most of the the 6&8 speed complaints are shifts hard which is actually a good thing, that’s what you want and especially in a truck but people want there trucks to be 4dr sedans now because that’s it’s only use for them so they want the Lexus shift which will cause premature converter and clutch pack failures. The pickup is the new sedan lol.
Ram lol I’ve owned 2 1. 3500 Cummins which mechanically was awesome but it suffered from wind noise, water leaks, electrical issues, interior just fell apart. 2. 1500 5.7 same exact issues as the other but adding a blown head gasket on the left cylinder bank. And I’m not alone with these issues with Ram. They’re good looking trucks in and out but what a pos.

    • @AlphanumericCharacters

CR subscribers buy what CR tells them to buy. Group think herd mentality at its worst. So they buy a Toyota and make excuses when it breaks and lie on the survey that nothing has gone wrong. Ultra fan boys. Especially since the only reason ever to buy a Toyota would be the supposed reliability. They are bland boring cars. Are uncomfortable, drive poorly, with underpowered engines and old technology. But say you want something that is an appliance. You can depend on. You buy the Toyota. Then how embarrassing is it to yourself when it is no better than the Chevy you traded on it? People love to lie to themselves. Or to protect an image. “I buy quality”.
Not saying Toyotas are not reliable but they don’t stand out by any means. Take that from a mechanic with 22 years experience.
P.S. every Toyota owner will tell you about their own,or their uncle’s, or their Dad who had 500k on his with only routine maintenance. All fake. All cars have rubber bushings in the suspension, balljoint wear internally, bearings wear, clutches in auto transmissions wear. Sure a good car uses better materials but nothing goes 500k without suspension repairs, auto trans overhaul, motor mounts, sensors, and oil seals/gaskets. Nothing!

Im all for consumer information and transparency but how does one calculate a reliability score on a 2021 vehicle with such a small window of operation? Given alot of failures require time, use, operational variation - how objective and useful are these scores? Is the polling sample exactly the same for each model? The problem with review sites is that you see 25 people complain about their cars (which is human nature) - but in a forced sample of 10000 owners who all have no complaint but 25 complain - how predicable and relevant is the failure?

Also, my 2020 Ford F-350 just got out of the shop after 3 weeks for a transmission recall, in which the entire transmission had to be dropped to replace a planetary gear after just 5000 miles. I have had equal issues from GM in the past, but to be honest, I think its how much money the various companies are handing over to Consumer Reports to get favorable reviews. The later models just aren't having any issues. Most engine issues they do see are from lack of changing the oil. The owners will swear they change it regularly, but when it comes out like mud, its pretty obvious it hasn't. I don't put an ounce of credibility in these "consumer" reports. They are more unreliable than the vehicles they report on.

The 8 speeds are solid units and can handle a lot of heat and horsepower, they may be clunky with that old fluid but we haven’t yet seen one come in that needed to be replaced. We replace more 6L80’s than anything, especially if the fluid wasn’t changed before 50k miles. The engines that need to be rebuilt or replaced are obvious the oil wasn’t changed.

A simple flush and refilling with the intended fluid, the problem forever went away.
I had a 2016 GMC Canyon that I crisscrossed the country towing a 4,500lb RV. With over 60,000 miles on it I never had to lay a screwdriver on it. It worked flawlessly. I recently traded it on a 2020 Silverado RST 5.3. Likewise, it has performed flawlessly, I guess time will tell.

A week ago I bought the 2021 Silverado Lt 5.3 8 speed and 2 days later at the 236 mile mark the truck would not go into gear. Every gear was neutral and my wife kids and my self where stranded all check engine light came on. Dealer sent out a tow and we got a loaner. It’s still in the shop and no updates. I think it electrical not sure at this point. I just want my truck back and working!!! Anyone have this issue happen to them?

My dads 2017 Silverado z71 4x4 , had a oil leak. This was caused by a warped oil pan from the factory. Took it to them six times. They finally called the place where they installed the motor. They had it on record, that they installed a warped oil pan. They gave him a a hundred and thirty thousand mile warranty.

Just now seeing this video but we had a 2018 Silverado, 5.3L and we had issues before and after the brake recall as well as a new transmission at 23k miles. When you’d pull the gear lever from park to drive, it would lunge forward as if already in second gear and would gradually start backing the brakes off even when fully stomped down. It was great fun lol

Tundra behind a RAM on reliability? Something fishy there

Not surprising if you're an actual owner, plus they do lop the HDs in there too. A well-taken care of Cummins Ram routinely goes north of 500k miles.

@@hellkitty1014 good point on HD. This is just 1500 though. I’ll say this, the move to the ZF transmission was the BEST decision they have ever done. I’d say that right there is why I keep seeing Ram place higher in reliability surveys.

No significant probs to report after a year with 2020 RST 5.3L 8-speed 4WD except the AGM battery had to be replaced. By the way, when the battery goes with new trucks even the transmission gets wacky.
The bad CR report has me a little worried but we see here the models and all have so many combinations that it’s hard to say where the risky factors are.
The 6.2 L sells to macho guys but it runs on premium fuel which, last I checked, was $0.80 more a gallon. They lowered the price on the diesel for 2021 making it affordable.
The head unit (or center stack display) is a little buggy sometimes, such as when losing the SiriusXM signal for no reason.
I asked them to refill the NITROGEN for the tires (which is touted as valuable feature) but spying on the mechanic I saw he used plain air.

I'm here to confirm reliability issues with the 2021 Silverado.. Mine is in service right now with 3300 miles and needs new lifters.. My brother-in-law has a 2021 also, and his has been in service 3 times under 5000 miles. We both have RST trim with the 5.3 and 8 speed. I bought mine in FL he bought his in PA.

Consumer reports changed the Toyota Camry from best buy to do not buy back when they had accelerator problems. I have a hard time trusting them.
Truth is, we don't really know what's reliable until 10 years later.

There are other trucks out there that are also reliable and will keep money in your pocket. I had a truck a couple years ago that was guzzling 43 gallons of fuel a week.
