How Temu Makes Money From $10 Smartwatches From China

- Bargain e-commerce company Temu has had a whirlwind 2023.
Quietly launching its app in September 2022, it only took the company a few weeks to top app store charts, edging out Amazon, Walmart and even fast-fashion brand Shein. By February 2023, the 5-month-old company made its TV debut during Super Bowl LVII, airing two commercial spots totaling an estimated $14 million. With an annual advertising budget of about $1.4 billion, Temu is focused on aggregating a user base of nearly 100 million people by year-end.
Temu's popularity is largely due to its ultra-cheap knockoffs. Users can get an Apple Watch dupe for $10, Yeezy knockoffs for $4.99 and gaming consoles for $20. On top of the steep discounts, users are bombarded by coupons, free shipping countdowns, flash sales and discount wheels.
While on its face the company looks to be a Boston-based startup, it is actually backed by a well-known name in the Chinese retail space, Pinduoduo.
"China is really the linchpin in Temu's strategy," said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail. "A lot of the products that are sold on Temu are manufactured in China. They're shipped directly from China to the U.S. So those labor costs compared to manufacturing in the U.S. and elsewhere are really low."
Temu's rise in popularity has also courted scrutiny from the U.S. government, accusing the website of exploiting de minimis shipping rules to undercut U.S. retailers. Under de minimis rules, shipments valued under $800 are not subject to duty taxes and undergo minimal customs checks.
Beyond that, a U.S. House committee accused the retailer of violating U.S. import law by using forced labor to supply its products.
Temu and Pinduoduo did not respond to CNBC's request for comment.
Watch the video above to learn what's behind Temu's success and what could disrupt the retailer's massive growth in the U.S.

Temu is owned by PDD Holdings, a company founded in China that has been credibly accused by members of Congress as being linked to the Chinese Communist Party. Congressional investigators also believe Temu is illegally selling products made by forced labor in Xinjiang, where the Chinese Communist Party is committing genocide against the Uyghur people. Uyghur peoples who are imprisoned and enslaved in concentration camps are being forced to create much of Temu’s goods.

The more interesting question is "How does Apple convince consumers to purchase $400 Smartwatches that cost the firm $26 to produce?"
Apple products are a reap off.
Let US citizens enjoy cheap electronics and goods which are comparable to branded goods.
😂😂😂 baaaa baaa 🐑🐑
$26 to produce each unit but the cost of Research and Development is where the price tag is. Engineers work for years tinkering with hardware to make smaller, thinner, faster chips. They make up this huge cost with the Apple price tag.

If an American company did this, they would be on tv saying: “we optimized our operations to maximize shareholder value and believe that small government and fewer regulatory hurdles are the key enablers for value creation. Even though others in my sector make six figures per person, I want to be the first member of my polygamous family to earn a million dollars. I am well aware of the expenses involved with putting in longer hours to earn more money.
If the market has taught me anything, it's that it usually makes a comeback, but I can't seem to concentrate on the long term, especially because important things like my retirement and my reserve are having a disastrous impact on inflation. Wish is also an "American" company. The difference between Temu and Wish is that Temu is pushing hard. Really hard. Tons of money is being pushed towards getting grabbing western users.
The secret of temu's cheap goods is that they directly establish a relationship between factories and consumers without intermediaries to make price differences. And the same products can only reach consumers through multi-level dealers and retailers on Amazon.
It's what they claim, not what they really do. mainly because no one is willing to disclose ditching taxes and running sweatshops.

After a certain point, yes. It’s interesting how the government keeps saying companies like shein and temu have an unfair advantage over other COMPANIES by shipping things under 800$ to avoid paying tariffs BUT they don’t say that it’s the CONSUMERS who benefit from this since these companies are able to make things more affordable for the everyday people, WHILE abiding by the law. When I first started my wholesale business in the US, my import used to be less than $800 per shipment. But after doing my math, I would have a unit cost of at least double than if I had imported a larger shipment. Which only makes sense because the larger your shipment, your unit cost goes down. This use to be a competitive advantage that US based sellers have against foreign sellers on sites like Amazon and eBay. Now, I'm seeing warehousing/fulfillment companies offering storage space for bulk imports from manufacturers from China so that Chinese sellers/manufacturers can now ship directly to American buyers and compete directly with American sellers.

I think a lot of this push back is, in the back of their minds, politicians know we have a competitive problem and use alternative narratives to avoid just acknowledging that AS the root of the problem. Back in the 50's, Japan had a reputation for shoddy goods. They improved quality and offered better prices. Even in the 70's, Japanese cars were not the thing they are now. In the 80's you got that Gung Ho movie (with Micheal Keaton in it, a 'pop' reaction) as we struggled this with what's an identity crisis in where the U.S. stands in manufacturing. The torch is passing still and will continue. I expect India will be the next push-back as they are a rising technological power as well. What's ironic is a LOT of what we've preached to these countries regarding manufacturing that's made them so competitive are things we've failed to follow through on ourselves (complacency).

how do they get something from the middle of China to NJ in a week for free?. i can't mail a package from NY to CA in a week for less than $10.
Just to think how Americans are helping Chinese economy so directly is beyond me.
"Give me a paid news story that's really just a Temu ad without telling me it's a Temu ad"
This video forgot to mention that Temu, like the rest of Chinese marketplaces, leverages subsidized UPU postage rates (40-70% lower than regular rates) for underdeveloped countries (isn't it ironic that in order to get subsidized shipping the second economy of the world claims to be underdeveloped?)which is why shipping from China is dirt cheap but if a dissatisfied customer wants to return the products to China then they would need to pay the full international shipping price as US is a d developed country and doesn't get subsidized shipping.
This is totally untrue. I requested several times for Temu products returning. The process is not only easy, but totally free for me.
@@nexcenent.3331it was true a year or two ago. Now they know they need to make the investment to make returns easier
Pinduoduo, the mother company for Temu is a Private Company and they make obscene amount of profit in China alone. Pinduoduo is not a strategic business. Why on Earth would the government subsidize a private company like Pinduoduo?
All western countries, are paying for Chinese shipping to all of us. Undercutting our own business.
We are paying them, to destroy us.
subsidized shipping. did you pull that out of your a**?
The economy in USA is a driving people to use Temu. The prices are going up so much a person can't help, but get drawn buying the low cost items especially people with low incomes.
It just proves that how high the profit margins are for most companies
not really, because, the chinese government pays for the losses of TEmu, because TEMU is chinese gov company. similar projects by the chinese gov companies are running in south africa as well, with the goal to undermine local, regional african businesses and with success which means many shopowners went bancrupted. its instabilizing local companies. and china attacks now western world, europe and usa as well with same goal, to instabilize economy.
its not bargain, you pay with instabilizing and bancruptcy of own economy. temu was located in china but when too many people saw through, they located cooperation in usa as well. its the chinese project to attack western countries and exploiting africa in the end
Out of curiosity I ended up buying 4 pair of shoes, 2 pair of jeans, 2 dresses and a few kitchen gadgets. The chemical smell from the shoes and clothes were awful. The quality of the jeans wasn't bad but I found the cotton style dresses were sub-par material. Not soft after washing them. I didn't expect top of the line, but my curiosity is now satisfied, I don't plan to get anything else from them.
They only sell China made cheap knockoffs.
Some of these items ended up on Amazon through sellers. I bought a swim suit that gave me stomach pain when ever wind hit me. There was something wrong with the material. It felt like gall bladder attack. At first I thought it was me, but then I realized it was whenever I put on the swimsuit. Its better to feel and see the fabrics or keep to known name brand. I will never buy online clothes again. I don’t know what chemical was on it, but it was physically causing me pain.
@Miss_Sylvie Wow that's wild!
@@christendenise220 It is nonsense.
Yrp, bottom of the line from china.
This video is putting me on two big important decisions in my life. Do I order the smart watch or do I delete the app?? 😂
Why is this audio quality sounds really bad? Do you bought microphone from temu?
They might not pay duties or regular shipping rate but they pass the savings directly to the consumer instead of keeping them as profit. Meanwhile the local retailer might pay their fair share of taxes but their prices are tripled or more for the same product. We need companies that compete fairly and responsibly and also not gouge the general public.
Not gouging the public will never happen. Thats corporate rule #1, get as much money as possible.
Can't have it both ways with Capitalism
But these products are made from slave labor
Not to forget the local retailer has the fixed expense salary rent utilities insurance etc etc
@@nitinmirpuri3313 exactly. There is so much more expense when adding an international warehouse alone.
C'mon, who green lighted this? Tf is up with the audio?
was thinking the same thing.
Same - horrible audio. Maybe the microphone came from... Temu.
We're over-vilanising Shein or Temu, but in France, when I need a kitchen accessory or a bathroom organizer, I won't necessarily go to Ikea or local supermarket and pay 30€ or so, for an acrylic or "bamboo" organizer, when I can get the very same thing for 10€ or less from Asian e-commerce. Whatever you can get in UE, it's made in China but eventually assembled in the Netherlands...
The quality is the same, but the price is more pocket friendly, especially in the recession.
As for the quality, let's just say that everything will break if you don't take care of it or if it's made to be repurchased.
And also what you can find on Amazon for 26€, you'll find for 6€ on Shein, sooooo.....
It sounds like you got the mic purchased from there as well...
Great video I ordered 30 items for $130 last month it came in 2 weeks and I was surprised at the quality of all products.
So how were the qualities of the products?
Its good and cheap

Every time I see a Temu ad I think of Portlandia's 'Instant Garbage' skit.
That's what is called flash sales, so of those quick ecommerce companies are not for the sake of long term projects, Temu will burn once real competition starts and major countries starting to ban the app, just like Wish which did the same business model as Temu and is not ending well for Wish either.
Audio quality feels like it was recorded off an very old laptop
Where is the referral link?
The way things are going, Temu may become one the last places where the average person could afford to shop. Stopping it may severely limit what the average person can afford.
My thoughts exactly.
That's why CNBC is snitching , and crying about it. Their advertisers are mad about being exposed. Walmart has been ripping us off for years.
Yes, Pinduoduo has created a miracle of rapid growth in China, because it is only here that people realize that money is really valuable.
Gotta keep that liquidity within the motherland homie
Just wait for an EMP to hit. You'll wish you hadn't helped put the local stores out of business! 😊
So Temu is like the Lazada/Shopee for the US
While here in Asia, we are just starting to get Amazon.
I wonder if Temu comes to Asia what will the impact be ?
@@Abebil3 nothing really, its basically like ali express lazada.
everything from temu is VERY VERY FAKE COPY

Amazon will have a tough time to compete with Lazada and Shopee.
This documentary looks like an AD for the 10$ smart watch xD
“So what is temu doing with your data? Well anyway we bought a watch and thought the box was nice”
Critics like to say Temu products are cheap because they are low quality, and a lot probably are. But what they don't want to admit is that many of the products on Temu have no equivalent versions ANYWHERE ELSE in the US. I go to Temu for the unique and creative selection, not the price which will probably rise higher after the teaser stage.
Exactly. The good times and cheap prices arent going to last forever so Im stocking up on the essentials that I know Im going to need down the road like; party/cake decorations, gardening supplies, first aid equipment (splints, etc.) and so on because I refuse to be gouged by local corporations.
In actual capitalism, a price point is a reliable narrator of the item's worth. Not so in petrodollar fantasy lands, where everyone wants "a bargain": free lunch. Essentially legal loopholes to allow stealing when others pay the price.
And have the backbone to cry that it's jsut "fair" to get the "market" price in their fixed gamble market. Exploitation yesterday justifies the same range of prices today, and forever.
Me too. I got this unique dead hanging Halloween rat.
@@sboinkthelegday3892 Have you ever been on Temu, 🤡? Just like a grocery store chain, some items are cheap and others are not to offset the cost of selling those cheaper items. Its up to the consumer to be savy and decide what best to spend their money on. Clothes for me on Temu is hit or miss, but for house stuff, they are great because they have items Ive never seen on sale in my city. I like the variety in their storage items. I live in an apartment so that comes handy. You dont like it, dont shop there. End of problem.
You are going to be blown away when you see the diverse selection from Japan

as we all view this from our American made iPhones

Isn’t apple and Amazon etc playing like same with us with our data? So if Amazon sells the same stuff from china is it ok?
The U.S. NEVER mentioned anything about the EXTREMELY HIGH profits made by the American importers, wholesalers, and retailers through global sourcing. Temu's advantage doesn't rely on labor cost or tariff, which won't make that much difference from other type of international trading. The real savings come from somewhere in-between. For instance, a shoe at FOB $3.00 turns out to be $9.99 on the shoe racks of discount stores, or even $15.00 in the department store. Where did that $6.99/$12.00 go ? The retailer's cost is usually only half of the selling price. In-between, the additional charge goes to American importers and wholesalers. China has only earned the smallest fraction of the whole chain, as the Amercian buyers are over-too-good at "killing" the price. It is the U.S. importers, wholesalers, and retailers who have grown their EXTREMELY HIGH profits ever since outsourcing in China. As people of God, it's really a shame for being a burglar while pointing China as a thief.
Temu loses money. They sell overstock trash that can't get sold in mainland China or to other companies.
Yeah - I guess when you have to pay employees an actual wage, pay for full price postage and real taxes its considered "extremely high profits".
The 50 cent army is waiting for you, wumao.
OK Hop Sing
Are you a large language model?
this is stupid, they provided local job and was part of next gen capitalsm move, temu is a bad bussiness model for usa
I bought some household items like a wheeled storage bin and a dishsoap pump dispenser. Packaging was awful I was surprised the items were not damaged, but, I am very happy with my purchase and the dispenser was cheaper and better quality than what I could pick up at Walmart or TJ Maxx. Will probably buy more of the same because of those reasons. No I wouldn't buy clothing or electronics from Temu, but plastic household items, absolutely.
Oh you would be surprised of the surprised 😂
As long as its not food storage or baby items or pet items. Hell ya. But woth lax regulation, there could be toxins in the plastics. Laundry hampers and toilet cleaner. Ya go for it.
you think they have FDA in china? there probably using super cheap toxic chemicals to create those items. If you buy from a famous u.s brand i doubt they will ruin there brand by using toxic chemicals atleast your getting something somewhat safe or can even sue the company if they use illegal chemicals to make it.
Apart from the plastic things, I bought lots of smart switches, USB switches etc and they work very well. Later I did find the same thing on Amazon, it's more than 50% cheaper
The clothing items aren’t anything worse than what you get at Walmart
So basically it's cutting out Jeff Bezos as the middleman?
This video's audio sounds like it was recorded on a beat up iPhone 4s in the stall of a midwestern community college bathroom.
Bahahahaha
“To most people on the street, it just looks like an Apple Watch.”
The LAST reason I bought my Apple Watch was because of what other people thought. I bought it for its functionality. I couldn’t care any less as to what it looks like.
Fr lol, Apple Watches can be as cheap at $150, it’s not really a fashion statement or a bragging right. What matters is the function of the watch
For a lot of people it IS a bragging right, and they love to show off how "wealthy" they are. It's just the world we live in, the poorer you are the more you want to convince others that you aren't
It has less function than a majority of other premium smart watches on the market. I still don't think it even has a swipe keyboard to type normally like on every other device.
If you have an Android phone, most of the Apple Watch's features are useless because they don't mesh well. If I want a watch that looks expensive as a conversation piece, I'll get a $400 Chinese Tourbillon mechanical watch. Plus a small fitness band.
That's weird since Apple devices have the lowest cost-effectiveness of tech out there. They're overly expensive with lack of functions that cheaper devices have. Hence the common thought process is that people must buy an inferior product only because it's popular.
I don't understand how anyone can buy this landfill stuffing more than once.
You don’t understand a lot of things of this world; and yet the world functions with or without you
You thought TikTok was stealing your phone data? Welcome to TEMU.
In other words, if you can't beat them, accuse them of all kinds of violations, abuses and crimes. 😂😂😂
As asian, I always avoid stuff that insanely under price (cheaper) than the normal price tag. It's easy to find cheap thing around here yet it's hard to find company that care for our health, I'm even to go to Eco friendly.
There's a lot things that can harm for our health from dangerous material yet they can get away with it because it's not consumable. And yes you can find $10 watches, that should be only strap band price. If you have to buy something make sure to know what campany from, what material they used, and there's product number. Some company here start to realize some smart consumer and they tried to used safe material and added QR code for authenticity. Please use this type of product.
And always remember the rule when buying things, sometimes the cheapest ended up being a cost more.
the thing is...in America, you might be paying 10x for the same item. The American CEOs just kept the profit. You can't really compare prices from china vs pricing from America. The later includes management's bloated salaries.
YET they still come from CHINA

*I began my investment journey at the age of 27, primarily through hard work and dedication. I am to share that my passive income exceeded $100k in a single month for the first time. This success reinforces the importance of the advice mentioned earlier. It is not about achieving quick wealth, but rather ensuring long-term financial prosperity.*
Through closely monitoring the performance of my portfolio, I have witnessed a remarkable growth of *$500k* in just the past two quarters. This experience has shed light on why experienced traders are able to generate substantial returns even in lesser-known markets. It is safe to say that this bold decision has been one of the most impactful choices I have made recently.
The adviser I'm in touch with is *'Donald Nathan Scott'* He works with Merrill, Pierce, Smith incorporated and interviewed on CNBC Television. You can use something else, for me his strategy works hence my result. He provides entry and exit point for the securities I focus on.
What differentiates the poor from the rich is what both do with the information they get. While the poor doubt almost all the information they find, the rich get richer by doing things that the poor did not do when they got information. For financial success and investing, always work with a financial advisor who is ready to help you succeed.

Well not if you doing it even more "evil" then Amazon. They purposely undercut the Market so much that they LOSE Money for now. Just to establish themself and hurt OUR western Economy. Amazon still bad though.
Actually Amazon started like this with Books. Undercut the competition to drive People out of Business even if its not profitable in the short Term. Once a Marketplace is big and mighty they can DICTATE the Prices like they want.
