Quick to use the term 'racist', when it is used to describe people who aren't actually racist it looses it's power. Tip, only use that term if people are genuine racists e.g Nazi's etc...
In my experience of playing where I’m from some of the best players I’ve played against have been Asian, the talent is definitely out there.
Sami bigs why would they win just because they are Asian? Don’t even know any pro Asian atm
I actually have my own story. I’m 19 And last year was one of the best on my academy team yet the manager didn’t fancy using me and I don’t know why. I was performing well in training yet still was getting no gametime. I think we have a stereotype about us that we are different , we are weak and can’t play at a high level. Ever since I started playing football at the age of 4 , I have wanted to play professional football.
I have also tried out for a non league first team , I performed better then most players in the actual first team in training and scored one exception goal where even all the senior players congratulated me and told me they hoped to see me again. Yep you guessed it , no phone call back from the manager and no communication. I believe I only got the trial in the first place is because I sounded English on the telephone. Even though I was born here and lived here all my life.
Anyways , great documentary Adam and Copa 90.
Lmao what? I am white and I was rejected plenty of times from different places before I managed to gain recognition from my county team. It is the same for many world class footballers who have been told they are to small or to weak, like Lionel Messi. If you are good enough and have the right mindset, there is nothing stopping you.
Thx for sharing ur experiance bro👍

I get the whole 'my parents want me to be a lawyer/doctor' narrative but I can't see how that accounts for the lack of at least a few breakthrough players. African parents are also notoriously strict yet there's many British players of African origin. I live in a town with a large Asian population and to say all young Asians are education focused/on the path to high flying careers simply isn't true; just like any race you have some parents who are strict, some interested in sports and some not interested either way.
No where near as strict as asians. Also asians many have family members who are well off and parents expect their kids to compete. This not a surprise considering home ownership is high 68% for both pakistanis and indians second after white british at 70%
Education is a problem in the paksitani community - lack of edcuation- makes no sense that stereotypical nonsense

North african (berber and arab like benzema or zidane)are almost 10million but they are not many (fekir, rami, benzema, ben arfa, nasri, guendouzi) i can count them on my hand.

I remember when I used to play professionally , that kids parents that would go to the games and be buddies with the managers would get more minutes . So family support is quite important . Vikash Dhorasso was a French Asian player, played for Lyon and PSG, was also in the French squad
Areola is pure asian also who has a successful career in Europe and represent France internationally though he is Filipino
Being from stoke there is a huge Asian community I played for Asian dominant 11 a side and indoor football sides …there were some hugely talented players in those sides to the life of me never fathomed how they were not on either port vales or stoke city’s books.. to put it into perspective 4 of the lads ended up playing for conference, northern premiership and north west counties clubs in which they were in a minority of players won played at that level without being released by a professional youth system…
I can’t help but feel racism and stereotypes plays a huge role in this …
I feel like a lot of things have to go your way to become a professional footballer. One of which is luck. Technical ability is only part of the puzzle. I’ve seen so many exceptional players never get noticed because they weren’t in the right place at the right time.
Also seen other exceptional players who have had to give up their football careers because of tragedies like one guy I know who was a Tottenham youth academy player went through a time where his parents died and he had to quit football to work to support him and his younger sister. It’s a very complex topic.
What people want is the same recognition as everyone else. They don’t want to be favored, but looked at equally. So when you have scouts that have preconceived notions about a player, solely only their origins, it will impact their reach.
The bigger issue is outside of sports and should be focused on. The everyday social subjectives that are present in society has a trickle down effect into sports, education, jobs, etc.

Brown British people need to stop othering themselves, yes your ancestral roots are South Asian but you are British.
Africans and Carribeans are starting to mix to the point that both cultures are merging, they always didn't get along in the past but I think it's easier for a Carribean to mix with an African than a Indian Hindu to Mix with a Muslim Pakistani, that's the problem. It's a lot harder for them to view themselves as a single base. Regardless when it comes to other aspects of life they're extremely successful.

This entire problem is the same problem that we have in America, but just with kids in general. Then after college, they get a job and live a normal life. Asian societies are heavily based on class, a family will do all it can to build itself as a high respectable family in their society. Football however has always been a lower class of sport and therefore thats where I think the problem lies. If this wasn't the case and the problem only occurs with British Asians then it does not explain why almost all asian national teams are not the best and there is no stand out asian player in the world.
Hit the nail on the head we are always competing with each other for long term benefits
Which asians are you talking about! That doesn't apply to paksitanis and bangladeshis who are more working class than any other race (statistically the poorest)
Yes. That also explains why there are tons of Asians in higher class sports like cricket
Asian families only want their kids to become doctors, lawyers etc and isn’t too supportive of football as a livelihood
However that mindset is slowly changing
That is already changed, it's just that the other are not willing to see it
Our generation will change it. The parents of the generation above are not supportive. I had to become either a lawyer, doctor or Engineering. I came second in state for school shotput. But parents would never let me play football because it was dangerous. I become statistical analysis who is tad over weight, but I will always wonder what could of been every time I watch a game. I think with pain in the community things will change. An entire generation of people thinking would could of been, usually in history the next generation goes on to do things no one expected as they will be backed all the way.

One of the big reasons why british Asians don't make it in football because for too long English football was about the biggest, strongest and fastest players. British Asians are more skillfull and technically gifted, traits that were overlooked until recently slowly more british Asians will get the chance and breakthrough.

With football it’s risky to obtain financial success if you don’t make it especially at the age of 16.

It’s been on record that scouts are actively told not to take on Asian lads... this problem is far deeper...
Without even watching I can say it's because young Asian kids parents make them go to educational and familial obligations above sport.
Finally, this is a question I’ve always wondered myself, I don’t know why it’s taken this long to address it.
Well done Adam, Danny and Mat on producing this.
I’m married to a Sikh so I have a slightly different insight and from getting to know and learning the culture it’s very much family first and a good career. That simply comes from previous generations in India who were poor and just wanted a better quality of life.

It’s a shame really, hopefully things will change
I've played my whole life and always been told that I should be playing at a higher level. I was told by a scout that the only reason I never made it as a Pro or a level close to it was due to being asian and that scouts already don't tend to choose us.

Very interesting. I think it’s a combination of things. Once upon a time, I was desperate to become a Pro but a lot of things I felt just worked against me. From family support to the cultural differences. Eg. Drinking and even things like walking around naked in the changing room! (Sounds silly but it’s not something within Asians culture!)
Even though I am a British Asian, there are just some small and big things that really work against Asians making it imo.
What’s interesting is, in Germany, they manage to produce German Turkish footballers and in France they produce French Arab footballers. Yet in The UK, we do not see any British Turkish/Arab Professionals never mind British Asians! So there is something definitely wrong with the system too!
Dr Lawrence nails it. Genuinely wise words from someone who has committed themselves to a worthwhile area of study.
About time this topic is discussed - well done guys, great video 👍
Asian culture is a big reason. They are pushed to more respected professions. And those that are good footballers are too scared of failure as they would get mocked within asian communities for thinking they could do something different. Moreover, there hasnt been a British Asian footballer who has "made it" that they can identify with which also makes it more difficult for British Asians to believe they could play football at a higher level
As an Asian I know first hand that Asian parents focus more on education etc. Ive has played with a guy who was playing for the qpr academy, and they offered him a contract but his parents said no. He was fantastic to play with but I hated when I had to play against him lol. The talent is there maybe in the future we’ll see someone wearing the three lions top.
He is an immigrant so obviously life is already tough. I guess his parents see it as a risky and not respected job
I was signed to the Birmingham city academy at 8 but I only lasted until 15 and wasn’t offered a contract. It was because my GCSE’s were coming up I lost focus on football and my form dropped and my fitness got worse as I put on weight.
Simply Football damn that sucks maybe you can get involved through Sunday league or something

I coached a Bangladeshi School in a Leyton Orient / Lloyds of London scheme. There was one noticeable player a young Bangladeshi kid who was running rings around everyone. I asked the Leyton Orient coach you should get him in for trials. He said he would do it gladly! but the parents will not bring him. Given that a large percentage of East London is of Asian origin now they found it hard to find kids in the schools who want to come along. When I did ask one of the parents she told me it's just for fun. It's not a real job and not many make it, which is true! She also said she would rather he played cricket and focus on studies. Something many Asian families agree on I walked past my local cricket club and saw it has tonnes of Asian kids signed up! So I had to watch this and it seems from what the Asian lads are saying echo what I saw and was told.

The same can be said of English black cricketers or female racing drivers. Its not just one thing. I thing racism is a very small part of it.
Disanology you're assuming British Asians somehow don't like football or very few do, quite the contrary. There are thousands, who simply because they're Asian have lost out. Nice video. I've always wondered about this topic actually as I've known some good Asian players at school. I do think that the parenting/family side of things is still quite a big factor.

The only time football club discriminate against these British minority, is when they retire from football and want to be football club managers.

To become a pro footballer, you have to basically disregard the educational path which leads to A-Levels and then University. Many families do not want their children to gamble with their education for the slim chance of becoming a pro.
