Even if you know the basics, make sure you stick around till the end of this video to see some sus chord flexibility! Also you'll see a freak video editing glitch that I'm leaviing in. I really don't want to re-render and re-upload this video as ugly as it is, It's just a huge pain to do that and means I wouldn't be able to repost this video till tomorrow, so enjoy the huge ugly error :)
I'm a drummer and all your words make me feel really stupid, but when I hear the examples, I get it. It's making it easier to communicate with my bass player on how we can make changes to spice up what we are working on. I know sus ment suspended, but didnt know how to get there and now I do. Thanks for all the videos my man they're much appreciated.
This channel is “indisputably “ the best music/ guitar theory channel on UA-cam. Rick Beato is awesome, but to me, Jakes lessons are easier to grasp. Thanks for another superb lesson!
I love Rick’s video series where he breaks down “What makes this some great” as well as his insight on the music industry, but his channel is not really a teaching class. Jake breaks it down and teaches it for anyone. Btw... buy his poster. It makes you feel musically smarter. 🤣Worth it!🤩
(As a piano player, I adore lessons in C and Am.) Other places spoke of a Natural Second and a Perfect Fourth. It relaxed me to hear them both called Natural (one fewer term to figure out.)
I have gone from knowing zero theory and actually thought it was something beyond me until I discovered Jakes channel. I now have a small handle on some of it and owe this man bigtime Thanks so much I am truly grateful.
this guy is hands down outstanding, he encompasses musical knowledge and talent and his delivery is next to none, this channel is on a league of its own
I love how you treat modes with casualty on your videos. It really shows how it's just something else about music, and not "something the average dude doesn't do". I just composed my very first piece using the knowledge from your videos and it ended up being Lydian. I didn't choose it, but once I realized what I was going for, everything became much easier.
How you break things down so simply really helps. Things that seemed hard or confusing, make total sense with your videos. You're killing it. Great layout for videos, quick and to the point. You rock dude
Perfect timing: I was just this morning fiddling with inserting sus chords into a progression I've been working on, for some of that serene shimmer. Let me add my voice to the chorus of praise, Jake. I've been playing for 30 years, learnt a fair bit of theory in that time, but nothing and nobody makes it all hang together with with such simple clarity as you do. Great stuff.
dude, not only Jake knows a fucking lot of music theory but has the amazing talent to explain it and make it sound as clear as water! Hands down the best online teacher (y)
I love having something i have heard all my life being explained with music theory, so i can understand it and apply it where ever I want. Thank you truly so much!!! Those who don't know theory, don't know what they don't know!!!
Dude you made me smile and jump up to show my wife when you said they sound "gospely and Churchy", because when I tell people Dimebag not only favored these "gospel" chords but wrote one of the greatest solos in all of rock history in Floods. That song was my intro to suspended chords and months and months (and months) of trying to teach myself something so complex where simply memorizing fret numbers blew up in my face. Back to square 1 it was lol
Lizzio is king,I'm 54 yrs old, finally learning the right way while having the most fun ever with revisting my disorganized originals. Making steady progress
I love the suspended sound. As a kid I remember listening to all kinds of blues rock stuff- cool and all- but then my mom comes home with Moving Pictures. The Camera Eye changed my life.
Your lessons are THE BEST. The fact that you back up the theory stuff with quality, FUN demonstrations featuring some excellent guitar playing is doubly impressive.
Oh man !! you made that "sus chords" lesson so easy and quick to understand. Music is a skill, but pedagogy is an other one and you have it all. cheers from Paris/France.
One of the songs I've written, "Across the Field of Glass", makes heavy usage of suspended chords in the verses, and I think of it every time I hear an Asus2 chord now. It's really like you said- it has this fragile, shimmering sound, so weightless and vulnerable. Suspended chords are really beautiful and I think people should use them more!
This channel blows me away. For someone like me that knows the bare minimum when it comes to music theory, Jake makes everything so easy to understand.
You really teach and play beautifully!!! Clear and understandable and when you play it out...your bring together with a full band sound that sounds professional with HIT QUALITY. THANK YOU for your incredible presentations!!!
Another fantastic video that lays it out in a way I can understand. You always use the right language and graphics at the perfect pace. Thanks for doing what you do!
IMHO you've got the best lesson channel on UA-cam !! Hands down !! I totally understand all these concepts but never really "got it" , in the aspect of application to make my original ideas "spicier" !! Or , I was applying the concepts correctly but didn't really know why it was right ... I just knew it sounded good !! LOL thanks , Jake !!
I barely noticed the glitch, or the changes because I watched you two singers' antics. I love you guys, thanks to all who make this happen! You're all awesome!
Hats off for you qualities as a presenter and a teacher. Your videos are not only super clear, but super relevent and full of practical applications and handy suggestions. Plus, I love your fake-hits compositions.
Wow Jake. I love, really love your videos. Although I know about the sus chords, I find inspiration for teaching them. You are a great guy. Cheers from Germany.
Jake is like the "booster rocket" that gets me into the higher orbit where I can understand what Rick Beato is laying down. And for that, I SINCERELY thank them both!
i can't get over the fact by how good of a teacher you are. i struggled with any theory no matter the lessons and after i found your channel i've learnt so much already. Thanks :)
Looking to make actual song creation interesting, I just looked up suspended chords. I was interested in their usage, ie where you can use them. This video was the result of my search. It was EXACTLY what I wanted to find! Thank you so much!
love the modal mixture over the sus2! Wanted to chime in and say that you CAN suspend half diminished chords which are the actual chord at the 7th degree. The half dim sus4 is a sharp11 sus 4 (B E F A resolve the E down to the D) and the sus2 is a natural 2 suspension, which means you need to travel briefly outside the key, but still really beautiful(B C# F A resolving the C# up to D). Usually they sound like 2 chords for a secondary dominant minor key, but suspended diminished chords (especially half diminished)are under-used and have so many wonderful applications! PS I understand that enharmonically, suspended diminished chords spell inverted b5 chords and augmented 7ths and stuff so it's not as cut and dry but depending on function they can still shine as legitimate suspended chords. Classic example is in a minor ii V. Picture these chords as quarter notes. Left hand single note, right hand chords. (B A B C# F) (B A B D F) (E G# B D F) (E G# B D E) (A A D E) (A A C E) That would be Bm7-5sus2-bm7-5, E7b9-E7, Asus2, Am. You could name the suspended 2 chord just "Bb5sus2" but I think it's so clearly functioning as a suspended half diminished it's better to describe it that way.
The thing I like most about suspended chords is that sus2 chords are just inverted sus4 chords. So you can do a smooth key change with something like A-minor -> Asus2 -> Esus4 -> E-major.
Man Jake, you really make understanding theory much easier than any other teacher I've ever experienced. This one was somewhat rudimentary for me, but it was an excellent refresher and I definitely learned to think differently about sus chords. I agree with another comment about Rick Beato. He's an unbelievable wealth of knowledge and knows his sh!t down pat, but he looses me quite often. I'm sure it's my pea sized brain, but when I watch one of your lessons (no matter the depth) I'm instantly into it and I never feel lost. You're one of a kind good Sir, keep up the great work. #patreon. Love your channel!
whoa. that was some serious knowledge the Professor just laid down. I always wondered about this. I used to think of it as "chords within the chord" so to speak. These videos from Jake are like building blocks for me: a little knowledge at a time. Good stuff.
Fine work! Would have loved you to do that song Major-Minor-Lydian-back to Major. Looking forward to Part II. When you get to possible problems, curious as to what you think about sus♭2 and sus#4 chords.
Right up there with all the other comments rooting for you. I really get the ideas at the pace you introduce them. This is tutorials done right. Bravo and thanks.
Hi Jake, i've been watching a lot of your videos lately.... And it's helping me sooooooo much about the basics. I've skipped a lot and now i'm here. watching, learning and applying the basics. Thanks for your channel!
This dude has the best lessons fr lol. Excellent work! Love watching your videos! Thanks for sharing! Your effort in your lessons shows your passion for music and teaching, and I find that remarkably endearing and respectable. From all the student musicians out there, thank you!
I love how BeardStank takes off his sunglasses at the end to reveal Lydian-strength prescription sunglasses underneath, while Lydian Jake puts ~on~ his Lydian-strength specs. Hilarious and at the same time an absolutely amazing sound.
Hey man, they’re actually not that difficult to use. Basically treat them as dominants chords, they build tension that wants to be resolve. The difference is that they’re symmetrical, you can build a new aug chord every major third from the note you started, so you can use them to change keys.
That was SUPERSWEET! I must say!. These vids literally cut years of self taught stumbling through music theory and practice!!! invaluable!!!!!!! Thanks Jake, Beardstank (sounds more sophisticated than Jeff! Lol) and all your Patreons.✌🙂👍
dude i love you, you are priceless and I hope youre doing well. you are an immense inspiration and you are enriching hopefully not only my life but many others. i hope your sleep is free of night terrors and is only filled with cotton candy clouds.

the glitchness added to the lydian weird style...i dig it
I'm a drummer and all your words make me feel really stupid, but when I hear the examples, I get it. It's making it easier to communicate with my bass player on how we can make changes to spice up what we are working on. I know sus ment suspended, but didnt know how to get there and now I do. Thanks for all the videos my man they're much appreciated.
Keep up the good work, Jake-and thanks for your blend of accessibility, utility, and humor!
What!? You published something less than perfect? Horse shit.
The PhrygianSus2 chord sounds so damn dissonant and evil. And it's kinda fun to play around with in my opinion.
Can't wait for the second video. :)
This channel is “indisputably “ the best music/ guitar theory channel on UA-cam. Rick Beato is awesome, but to me, Jakes lessons are easier to grasp. Thanks for another superb lesson!
You mean indisputably*
Arthur Cole indisputably it is!
@Verty Any basic theory book will do. I've never owned the Beato Book, and have no issues following him.
100 percent agree.
I love Rick’s video series where he breaks down “What makes this some great” as well as his insight on the music industry, but his channel is not really a teaching class. Jake breaks it down and teaches it for anyone. Btw... buy his poster. It makes you feel musically smarter. 🤣Worth it!🤩
One thing I love about your lessons is how you change keys. I can't stand any more lessons in C major and A minor.
Thank you, yes!
Many guitar teachers, unfortunately, start teaching in just one scale, and have you capo to other keys.
TRUUUUU and he doesn’t stay in the same key for examples. He can sometimes enter a new key when he brings on a different example
(As a piano player, I adore lessons in C and Am.)
Other places spoke of a Natural Second and a Perfect Fourth. It relaxed me to hear them both called Natural (one fewer term to figure out.)
This lesson in A major xD .

Trying to add vibrato to a keyboard. That's how you know your brain thinks in guitar terms.
Using what's called aftertouch. My 200 Euro Keylab 61 doesn't have it.
If you press ANYTHING strong enough, it will get vibrato'ed. Even a mayonnaise.
@@OmenAhead ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Let's be honest. Every guitarist does it.
Hahaha I do this all the time on the piano and I don't even play guitar
I have gone from knowing zero theory and actually thought it was something beyond me until I discovered Jakes channel.
I now have a small handle on some of it and owe this man bigtime
Thanks so much I am truly grateful.
this guy is hands down outstanding, he encompasses musical knowledge and talent and his delivery is next to none, this channel is on a league of its own
This is a clear, concise, bite sized explanation of sus2 and sus4 chords. Adding examples of their uses, icing on the cake. Good lesson!
The wigs, glasses, and froggytoad are great! You really nailed their application for the minor variation, too!
Everyone needs a friend like Beardstank!
as president I will endow each citizen of the globe with their very own beardstank
@@SignalsMusicStudio YESSSSSSS! You've got my 2020 vote!
@@SignalsMusicStudio I look forward to being so well endowed.
Even Hoobastank.
I need a trusted friend to objectively tell me what friend my beard should stank like.
Really excellent. What others complicate this man makes absolutely straight forward and concise. This to me is a real skill. And admirable.
Thank you to Signals Music Studio! 🙂
Asus2 is the opening chord for the Tristram theme from Diablo. Instant nostalgia flashbacks when you strummed that.
Also in "behind blue eyes"
I was hearing Jagged Little Pill more than once.
Stay awhile and listen
Radiohead use it quite often, and so did Jeff buckley.
I posted almost the same thing without looking at the comments. Every time he hits it and lets it hang out... ah...
I love how you treat modes with casualty on your videos. It really shows how it's just something else about music, and not "something the average dude doesn't do". you have done what my University teachers did in a semester worth of work within a 12-minute video thankyou

The switch to the Minor and the Lydian in that song there is incredible.
The best of youtube to learn how to compose. Playful, enlightening, visual, pure happiness. Thank you so much

Wow! This was a GREAT video!!!! Very well done! I am a retired Music Teacher. I stumbled upon this video. I subscribed!
God I love that Lydian Version…

I’m trying to get my mind around this comment
I get it. The sus2 in A is an inversion of the sus4 in E !
This should be the top comment

Great stuff Jake. This, and your other video’s help me so much develop in my song writing. My next song will surely start on a Sus2.
Dude, your sense of humor is as good as your lessons.
I was truly waiting for a video about sus chords. I learn a lot from every of your videos. Thanks a lot
i'm faiz from Malaysia, I always go to this channel than another tutorial's channel.. Very easy to understand... TQ

Great, from now on sus2 and sus4 make sense, and so much more ! Thank you so much Jake.

Dude. I love your videos. They help me understand things so much faster than just reading. Thank you x1,000,00
I love sus chords. I think they are my fave
G sus is your best friend 🤠
Can you do a video about augmented chords? I have never composed with augmented chords ever!
i second this
He has a vid on those!
Amazing explanation of the theory behind my "filler notes". Thanks! ❤❤❤
watching every video of you.. for me it is by this time the best channel on the whole platform honestly:) thank you!
among us players having an aneurysm with this video
You make it clear Jale and much more, as usual !!!!! Thank you.
Every musos should be subbed to this channel
These lessons have become my theory referrence. So clear in concept. Thanks Jake.
You are the best teacher online

This was the most usefull lessson on suschords i ever had. Thank you very much!
Woah the sus chords with the minor sounds really great and it’s something new that I learnt today!!😄
I love the composition you did, so much that when i'm working i play the last part over and over 9:56
