Love our foxhound. First-time dog owner. Great with people, other dogs, kids. Stubborn. I disagree on the shedding. I vaccuum and sweep every day. Needs at least two walks a day. Extremely affectionate.
Constance Sheckler Thinking about getting a foxhound puppy. I live in a row home in the city with parks nearby. This would be my first dog, would you recommend it?
I work from home so if you do not, you might want to reconsider. Foxhounds are very attached to their owners. Also, be sure to get your foxhound chipped, if they catch a scent, they are OFF! We have chased ours several times, a miracle he has not been hit by a car. Be sure to have a leash on him, including a body harness. Had cats by entire life, and LOVE this dog
@@KaitlynMarieMusic We thinking when we can. Buy a good brand underground electric fence that will keep ours in the 5 acre lot. Teenagers & well mommy has been pretty sick lately or we done got 1. Underground fence with 2 rechargeable collars so keep freshly charge 1 on him. They give them adjustable gently shock that should train them stay in the yard. Get close line "zap" We got a training shocking collar with remote control now. It helps a lot but must keep eye on Houdini very closely. Blame dog can be gone out of range before you know it. Dog can run very fast. Big ears just flopping & tail wagging all the way in the distance. LOL. I bet dog hit close to 30 mph open field woods don't slow him down that much too.
I love my foxhound Stanley. I got him when he was 6 months old. He is the sweetest dog ever. Foxhound are very sleepy but during the 8 hours a day when they want to play, they are very energetic. Foxhounds are a great breed if you can give them the proper amount of exercise. If not they can become somewhat destructive. But they will love you twice as much as you could ever love them. Stanley is one of the best dogs ever
Just rescued one that was left to die in a forest near Ocala, Florida. He’s been a bit skittish, but super friendly with my girls. I know we will get him to trust and love people again.
A great dog breed. Maybe the best I've ever owned. I got Thunder when he was 4 years old and honestly, I felt like he was the size of a small pony on such large, spindly legs. I was afraid he'd have a hard time integrating with my cats, or even worse be aggressive towards them because he was a type of hound. All my fears were found wrong when he seemed to fall in love my with my cats instantly. Thunder knew no strangers and was a joy to just about everyone he met. He lived until he was 10 and I still greatly miss him. I recommend getting a Foxhound to anyone who is interested!
I love my American Foxhound, Miss Maggie Mae (or Mayhem as I like to call her at times!). She was rehomed 4 times before I got her. She LOVES everyone that she meets and insists on hugging them. The dog park is always an adventure, she has many, many friends there. Not sure about the rest of you, but she loves the water, and snow which I cannot figure out for the life of me. Agree about the shedding, she gets regular baths, but I am constantly sweeping up her fur. If you have the space and patience, this is a great dog to welcome into your family.
Minutes before I wrote this, my 11 year old American fox hound was insisting I hold one end of his bone while he chews the other. We adopted him from the SPCAN April 2012. We think he is also slightly part lab, the the a FH is definitely the dominant. He was the most active dog I’ve ever had for about five years, and it’s a real understatement that they cannot train the hunting instinct out of them. Watson has proved to be one of the best dogs I’ve ever had and to think that one day he won’t be here is soul crushing. I have two small children, ages eight and five. They don’t know life without him. We foster dogs often, and he is so docile and easy-going with both people and other dogs. I definitely understand why Washington had 36, and if I had as much land as he did I would too.
Great dog. As 10 week to few month pup we keep it inside it getting cold. Never used bathroom inside once. This impressed Mommy. Really very smart Dog. Dog now our inside dog still at 3+ years old.. No you boys not taking it hunting he might get hurt. He so fast I always said we should name him Houdini disappear that fast. We shouldn't keep him inside as much but Mommies dog now. He look so sad looking out window wanting go play.
The Beagle is very similar in terms of behavior/walks. It just sleeps all day long. But if you take out the leash, it'll go forever with you. Too bad that a lot of families pick a Beagle and never take it out for walks and such.
We rescued ours, and we love him. We were told that he was a beagle. Well well well, we were surprised! Anyways, he is very smart, can be stubborn, sweet, SHEDS A GALLON OF FUR A DAY, requires about one or two walks. I absolutely love him
I am training my foxhound to not hunt, because we have guinea pigs. We use stuffed animals and squeaky toys to teach her to "leave it" and be "gentle". To help exercise her hunting instincts, we are doing nosework with her-- teaching her to find food in toys/the house. We also plan on teaching her to find other scents like people/objects. A good option for someone who has other pets like cats, rabbits, or guinea pigs. Our foxhound puppy is very gentle, but energetic!
My giant Beagle (Foxhound) was great. We lived together for 17 years. I loved him. I got married because of him. He and I did everything together. God, I miss him! He was my once in a lifetime Dog, and I was his once in a lifetime human. I was with him at the very end. We slept in the same bed for 17 years. I still remember the day we met each other, and so does he. We hit it off immediately. We belonged together. He was the best Dog ever. He thought I was the best Human ever. I still miss him. Knowing him made my life complete. I'm still stuck with my Wife though.
We just lost ours after 12 years. He was an incredible dog. Super smart, funny, overly affectionate, you could tell we meant everything to him… but boy….he could HUNT. I hiked 60,000 miles with Max and the dead animals he would find and bring back where beyond comprehension. The nose on this breed are really remarkable, just like their personality. Let them off leash and they gone, but always come back with a smile on their face: You might wait an hour, but they will find you. Anyone wanting to own one will have to succumb to that fact. These dogs need to be free and follow their instincts or they will be miserable, and tear your house up too.
I have a American foxhound beagle mix and I'm looking to find some type of game or toy that his hunting characteristics can come into play. Any suggestions? As much as I would like to hunt, I do not
Rise Above Media if you are in a rural area you could hind something scented for him to search for. Also try to find something he can run after or chase. American fox hounds are bred to chase not kill
we have a stray an away\or abused or dumped American Foxhound in our neighborhood, we feed him but he is still skittish and afraid of hand. We named him Buddy. :)
My family rescude a dog named moose and we did know his breed but i did a littel resherch and found this video this pritty much confirmd his breed weave had him for 5 years now
No they are not big beagles. I have had many beagles and they are basically morons compared to the American foxhound. We adopted our Genevieve several years ago and she is so smart and super friendly but we had to get her a companion so we adopted our Walker trig coon hound Vincent and he is so cute and funny!
Those NATO artist are so inventive! Oh yeah they have their billy bon bones studies every day. True true innovative brains they are! Nothing to say of super intelectual artificial mind! Oh yeah. Havn't you heard that wonderfull story of the last supper? Bulls eye competitiones! Ín the middle of nowhere! O yeah in the year of the white iron cowbull! WOW! what colour will they prefer those bulls be dyed in? You see nowadays transparancy is the highest valuable currency! Oh yeah.
Had 2 of these dogs, 1 lived to 17, the other to 15, both were great, miss them dearly.
Your dogs life spans are so encouraging. Watson is almost 11 1/2, and to think he may only live another year breaks my heart.

We thought our dog was a beagle and we found a picture of a foxhound, and we now think he is a foxhound.
But we are ordering him a DNA test tonight.
idiot the main difference is size, those are both scent hounds
idiot -- I have Beagles. The first time I saw a Foxhound I thought it was a Beagle with abnormally long legs... :)
Brilliant UA-cam name, whenever somebody replies to you it sounds confrontational haha
Did you finally foundout what breed your dog is?
We rescued ours, and we love him. We were told that he was a beagle. Well well well, we were surprised! Anyways, he is very smart, can be stubborn, sweet, SHEDS A GALLON OF FUR A DAY, requires about one or two walks. I absolutely love him
Laex Lade Yeah. I don’t get how the narrator thinks that foxhounds don’t shed much.
I love American foxhounds so much they are so lovable I have 2 girls ❤️

I adopted one..thinking he was a large beagle per the shelter...boy did i later find out, he was one of these lol stubborn bastard but i love him

We were told our foxhound was a beagle mix and he is not. We did the DNA thing. Unless he has short legs, he is a foxhound.
METAL GEAR
we have a stray
an away\or abused or dumped American Foxhound in our neighborhood, we feed him but he is still skittish and afraid of hand. We named him Buddy. :)
I have a foxhound that’s also named buddy lol

TBH, don't assume your dog is an American Foxhound unless it's 100% confirmed. I can't even find anyone who breeds them
It's basically a tall beagle then
A breed to surpass Metal Gear!
I'm fed from this dog

Exactly must accept his nature and have patience with his growth on becoming more "civilized" :)
