Time may be running out for Big Ben

- London's Big Ben has been chiming out the hours for 156 years. But it turns out the ancient clockwork - a charming example of Victorian engineering - is a bit temperamental, and problems with accuracy (last summer it was a whole six seconds out of whack) have prompted calls to shut down and rebuild the clock, a process that could take years. Mark Phillips reports.
I miss that clock, here in England, its very hard to say goodbye to it for 4 years, I'm used to it ringing everyday that i go to work, its been there since i was a baby, and i really was annoyed by it when i would go to school, but i learned to love it, i really wish it would be fixed this year, I miss my favorite clock!!
Why are you saying thats its been there since you were a baby
Its been there since 1859
@@speedbitgaming4124 they mean that that it was there even when they were a baby
Don’t despair! It’s the future now and all is well!
@@speedbitgaming4124 Man you dont know a figure of speech
They said they'll be down around mid 2023.
i'm american and I visited London. I love the city it has that ancient feel to it, and I loved every bit of it! from the tower of London to the buses, Its a time capsule that needs to be chariest. America would have destoried the clock years ago, just for it being old.
I know right! (I'm from Britain though) I love going to London and it wouldn't have the same feel if it was too modernised. (btw I go to america every 2 years and I can't get enough of it!). 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
xXShargiaArtsXx Indeed, London, it's Palace, Tower, Bridge and Cathedral of Westminster, as well as all it's other great historical buildings and Landmarks need to be Cherished! The bell known as Big Ben, is the largest ever cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in it's considerably long history of over 500 years, it's the oldest business in England. They've closed the doors on the original location and have planned to relocate, but the good thing about the Grade listing process of buildings is that once given Grade I or Grade II status such as the Foundry has been granted, it means that the building cannot be demolished or destroyed or modified by modernisation, so beautifully retains its original features and appearance and prominence in history and that's something no one can put a price on, regardless of nationality. I'd like to think that many Americans, have a pride in historical status and the sanctity thereof, and appreciate the beauty of the landscape, the monuments, ruins, great buildings, stately homes, castles, palaces, of England and Great Britain. There's plenty of them still, and many organisations, individuals (myself included) and charities dedicated to maintaining and preserving them for all time. And of course discovering the remains and locations of those that are lost.
Hey wolf
“Ancient” yeah Big Ben isn’t even 150 years old
@@arrow4749 Yeah ancient is definitely the wrong word to use lol, but London is a definitely a place with some wonderful old architecture
NNNOOOOO!!!! I DON'T LIVE IN LONDON BUT I STILL LOVE
BIG BEN!!!!!!
I know same!
@Simons Big Ben is being restored right now and will be chiming again in 2021 which is next year! This comment is in 2020.
I live in London and it’s just been boring without big ben
I've planted a tree next to Big Ben back in '07 and always visit it whenever I'm in London!!
You mean on the side with the clock tower and Big Ben? 'Cause I have a Lego set, and it's only got the part with the clock tower. There's a tree next to one of the doors. Is that it?
You mean next to Elizabeth Tower Big Ben is the bell that chimes on the hour
I don't see what's wrong with Big Ben. They can change a couple of mechs and reinforce the shot bearings/ replace. They don't have to tear the whole tower down.
Yeah...you don't throw out the baby with the washwater!
DWMCFan Productions They're not tearing the tower down, but the clock and bells will be out of action for a couple of years
I did some research and they're making improvements, such as an elevator, new mechanism, and the things mentioned above.

All over 6 seconds? Seriously?
I know right, it's just 6 SECONDS.
My grandpa used to work there and a 4/10 of a millisecond can REALLY BE BAD IN THE FUTURE!!!!! It may not work properly ever again if it's like that. The mechanism can mess up.
Dude the clock is supposed to be within 1 second
ScarecrowMedia When it was built it was within 2 seconds per week.
It’s no laughing matter Big Ben must at all times be accurate you don’t understand how important the clock really is
All hail the geniuses who built this clockwork !!!!!
except for that this video is talking about how the clockwork is outdated..
Ugh im out
As usual, America's media workin on a fear/terror basis.
?????????
Aaron Quevedo Meaning that the title is misleading.
its called clickbait. more interesting titles = more ad revenue
Yea, we do that alot don't we?
Yeah it’s like an action film. “Big Ben has chimed out the hours for 156... years or has it!?”
Excuse me, but I just choked at the blasé tone of the American presenter saying that it'd be a pity if Big Ben wasn't there or the Tower itself. What a cheek! Sound like he was downplaying and disrespecting the importance and marvel of the wonderful Bell, clock and architecture of the tower in which it's housed. I'm Proud of London, proud of the Palace and Tower of Westminster, and the Cathedral of course, proud of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry that cast the Great Bell we all lovingly know as Big Ben. Londoners, tourists and people from all over the world love the tower, the clock and the beautiful bells that chime within. Sure it may be a few seconds slow, and need regular monitoring, but it's kept time since 1859 so it's not going to stop anytime soon is it? Too much money and effort would be put into keeping it running and in repair and the tower too!
Fun Fact: Big Ben is NOT in America. It is in fact in the United Kingdom, in the capital city of London!
We all know that
@@stephensnell1379 wow! 4 year old comment! Thanks for reading it. It was not as well known back then as it is now
Theres two things that I've read about Elizabeth Tower, I was recently looking up its history because I'm a huge fan of clock towers/chimes! #1, I read that 11 years ago back in May of 05 it froze at 10:07pm possibly due to hot weather! It continued but it froze again 13 minutes later at 10:20pm, supposedly it was due to unseasonably warm temperatures 90 degrees! I don't get how hot weather can stop a clock from running, it happened on May 27th, 2005! Usually in late May just before June is when the weather starts getting warm, unless its different in the UK! I'm from Long Island, been here all my life! And #2 many years ago on the night of June 3rd into the morning of June 4th the clock stopped at 10:13pm due to someone dropping a hammer into the works and it wasn't reactivated until the following morning at 10:13am, thats another thing that made me scratch my head! Why would you stop a clock for a full 12 hours for something that sounded relatively simple? But then again, they have their reasons! But Big Ben (the chimes) has always been fascinating to hear, Elizabeth Tower is a beautiful building! Like I said, I'm a huge fan of clock towers/chimes! I really hope to make it out to the UK one day to see Elizabeth Tower and hear the chimes in person, that wold be a smashing good experience!
Most likely, thats a good point! I never thought of that, that might've been what happened!
Thanks ;)
Anytime ;D
Ever heard of periods?
Magicking788 I HAVE SEEN BIG BEN CHIME BECAUSE I LIVE RIGHT NEXT TO IT
The tower is leaning slightly. it always has . But the lean is barely noticeable unless you stand far enough away . The tower could use some repair .
If I lived in England I would not want Robbie woken up at 3: AM every night just cause the clock played
Well if you were in London you'd have to face it
And the irony is it has been recently restored.
The clock ain't called Big Ben it's called The Elizabeth Tower the bell is called Big Ben
Oh for crissake, a brand-new Rolex Submariner mechanical chronometer is off by more than six seconds after a few months; in any case, I didn't notice a second sweep hand on the face of 'Big Ben".
Beautiful big ben
AHEM*Elizabethtower*AHEM
Americans love to be negative about the British, our ways values and our heritage they are so shallow!
Big Ben will what ever always be there it's part of our symbolic london life
If anything happens to it we will rebuild it's a symbol to london and the world that we will continue regardless and in dignity and pride
Ukboy Uk
...you know I could say just the same about your home right
I feel offended and I’m American not all of us is like that
Kinda intolerant to Generalize Americans as all hating British Culture. Many of us love it, My Grandmother is from England so a part of England is held dear to my Blood.
They should replace it with a giant talking clock and get rid of the ding.
it also the central icon to the new years display. titanium firworks. they work hard to frame it with pyro
Wow. I hope they manage to fix it and don't rebuild it! That's probably one of biggest icons of London.
Now big ben doesn't chime, only at new year. And is covered in scaffolding. Being renovated for 2021. X
thaks my old frend bigben
It's just the same time delay as a vine,,,
5 years ago
Awesome 🤗
Mabye they should replace the hands and bearings and then install a device that will monitor the temperature and Mabye install an air conditioning system to keep the clock room cool.
Is this really the most attached i've been to a giant tower clock?
IT IS 6:00 AM OR PM
why not put a modern tech clock in there
FUCKING NO ITS NOT GOING TO BE REPLACED BY A CRAPPY NEW CLOCK
Why not let the clock stay there and build another one right beside it and then soon removeing the other clock tower.
I will visit the big ben!
It makes me proud to be British. Best British Landmark.
3:10 big ben 12:00pm with new year fire work?
Pokemon ash pikachu Rider Nagano yes
PhoenixGaming thanks
Please do not destroy a great clock that been build for years
if the clock was that fast. or slow why make such a big deal about the precious mechanical clock? all mechanical clocks go fast or slow it's just part of the clock
why is it that people blow simple fixes and preventive maintenance out of proportion, with outlandish time and over estimated costs. These are simple mechanic. and should not be a major issue , man up and get the job done.
What's with all the Big Ben bashing in the media lately? London Has Fallen, Independence Day 2... Posters of Big Ben Exploding. What's up with that?
Not to mention V for Vendetta
1 year late and all but anyway... it's the most recognisable London and perhaps British landmark , it's a bit like when all the american landmarks like the white house get blown up in disaster films. They could show wembley stadium getting blown up but outside of britain it would hardly be recognised.
It would not be the same with out big ben
London’s Big Ben?
But what about the tower

Big ben turned off for repavement
It's a cbs Sunday morning story. Calm down.
Make it like overwatch big Ben haha
Real is……………..shikes
The narrator sounds so crude for some reason lol
Gah Madagascar copied london the circus movie
150 years is not ancient!!!!!!
But if Big Ben (Elizabeth Tower) becomes modern, will people enjoy it?
Answer: No.
Leave it to an American news journalist to try belittle a British landmark. Smells like jealousy.
Nothing to do with American News, its just a news outlet reporting how it is. Which is why Big Ben is currently going under Maintenance. When Landmarks get old, they break down. As such with a lot of renovations on the US Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore. These are all beautiful monuments none of the less, So it's not a surprise that the nations want to preserve it as long as possible.
P
50lbs of C4. Problem solved.
Lmao BBC ;)
May Big Ben chime, toll and ring forever!
Agreed mate
Yes!!
Well now it’s in repair! That’s really sad but it’s fine
sadly modern technology and culture is taking over the uk. just like they said, the red telephone booths are no longer used, double decker buses are more modern, classic black cabs are replaced by Uber, and so on and so forth. why does history have to be ruined.
no i love the red telephone booths!!
the fact that black cabs are being taken over by uber is a good thing because the black cabs are REALLY expensive. I should know cuz im a Londoner
Andrew Bui it's sad but the government is in control. :(
Andrew Bui Pretty much the phone booths are just used for wifi purposes and decoration.
Andrew Bui is that your sister in your saved videos ?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Doug Montgomery bn. B xd d
Doug Montgomery
Doug Montgomery FIX IT BIG BEN!
Nope.
Doug Montgomery Or, in this case, If it ain't broke, don't break it even more
Keep big Ben how it is if it breaks build it the same but keep those old bricks and send 1 to the museum but do not destroy it my grandfather died making it
goodness! They must never destroy big Ben!
@@mrmolotok5934 it has been quiet for 4 years to get repaired as other UA-cam videos mention it would fall down if that was never done
Geez...you Yanks always distort things, it's not temperamental, it's accurate and reliable and it's only suffered the odd breakdown...what do you expect it's nearly 160 years old! Of course it'll take lots of money to restore...nothing's cheap anywhere these days...
I know. For such an old clock to only lose 6 seconds a week is miraculous.
The clock is NOT called Big Ben!
Q Marr
Eh?
Pete Marr
Yep! Big Ben is just the hour bell, not the entire clockwork. Of course people often call the whole thing big ben.
Yes, it's simpler that way.
The Elizabeth Tower is everything to the city. We cant let her stop.
London would kill somebody for trying to tear that tower down. They are going to revamp her due to her lean anyways so I see no reason why she can't get this fixed to... I LOVE YOU ELIZABETH TOWER!
Yeah, i sure do love it! Its a beautiful touch, and helping me remeber my favorite clock.
London without Big Ben is like Paris without the Eiffel Tower.
Exactly true
the Elizabeth tower and big ben are so much to us Brits. look! it even survived the blitz! even if it didn't work anymore, our future generations wouldn't have the same spirit.you have a real surge of excitement when your stuck in boring traffic and you hear it go off. I'm only 11 but I know for sure that it's something special. I go to London a lot and I'm in love with its history. so many things to learn about it! it would be a real shame if it went. I was really excited because i saw it when I went to the houses of parliament a few years back with a few people i did a marathon with. (the view was spectacular) we heard it every hour and we were so excited. I've always been a true Brit and proud of it.
Exactly although one clock face blew up during the blitz by the germans
Big Ben ain't the clock, y'all...it's the bell. :-)
2:20 One clock its not the one clock.
I hope it doesn't change too much. It's a beautiful tower. But if it has to happen I suppose that's it. It'll still be there at least. The clock tower on my college campus has stopped chiming as regularly in the last few years. I miss the chimes. It always cheered me up.
I seen that clock tower an its building up close an it looks magical !
going tomoz
Can we stop the clock at 9:35...and if you get the joke leave a like lol
Americans..... why r y doing stuff about Big Ben. U don’t live in the UK so why do Americans need to know...... also it’s Elizabeth tower. Big Ben is the BELL
You can't get rid of historic figures to replace it with something else.
Hello, air conditioning or a dehumidifier? Of course the Brits can't take a dump without a committee.
Eh We can just buy a new one off amazon they have everything
I would be amazed if Amazon has 300ft clock towers for sale.😆
It will not have to be rebuilt...its the clock machinery that would have to be replaced. As for the buses they needed modernisation and black cabs will never dissapear in London there are literally tens of thousands of them.
ikr what is up with people saying we don't have any black cabs! there are too many! the I want the phone boxes gone, they smell GROSS
Most likely the call to Muslim prayer will eventfully take over. I'm not saying that with humor in mind either.
6 seconds isn't that big of a deal. Struggling to think of someone in a time-critical position who keeps time with a clock tower, lol. It still sounds pleasant and looks good.
Nicholas Smith I think it’s also leaning
they stopped the chimes for 4 years for repair of the clock tower until last year when it began to work again . i think they can fix it . by the way big ben is the bell not the clock . mobile phones have removed phone boxes all over the world , same here in Dublin Ireland
As an american, I love old clocks. I can only hope that they're cleaning, oiling and rebushing the old movement and keeping it in place and as original as possible because this clock means everything to the brits, hell it means a lot to me even and any kind of modernization would ruin the charm and authenticity of this clock.
The guy is 156 years old give him a break.
I'm sure each of the four clock dial mechanisms could be disconnected and serviced independently, without interrupting the clock and the other three dials.
What do you expect from Big Ben when it's almost 160 years old?
By the way, Big Ben has been renamed to the 'Elizabeth Tower'.
I don't think it was ever named Big Ben, as that was just the name of the largest bell.
It's still called Big Ben by most people. It was officially named the 'Clock Tower', and has officially been renamed as the 'Elizabeth Tower', but most people will identify it with its nick name,
DavetGames 'Elizabeth Tower' in your words, was never called Big Ben in the first place. It's called Westminster clock tower. Big Ben is the bell inside the tower
The Elizabeth tower isn't being tore down it's just the tower is old and it has cracks in it and it need repair from it collapsing. Big Ben is ok but the clock and the clock hands need repair due to being exposed oxidation for 160 years.
At the start of it shown BBC News with bongs. Only ITV News do that..,
The 6 pm and midnight BBC Radio 4 news programs use the sound of Big Ben, are you proud of your alternative facts?
So that's why they're renovating it.
I'm not English but I love Big Ben, to not have it standing in London would be catastrophic!!
don't tear it down ffs. it won't be the same if it's rebuilt!
Lexiiiiii Lou they won't tear it down. nobody here in the uk has suggested that ffs
I'm pretty sure people won't care if a bong is a couple of seconds off piste...
