Great Episode ! This focus and decade long struggle, how it evolved, but of course the rifle way is still there, all techniques used as needed- birds personality, and the only two time used big 'um. This is such a juicy chunk of some sweet stewardness in the heart of mankind.
Cover the lake with floating solarcells. bit by bit. Ask for money from people like Gates etc.
This man really chased pigeons off a sidewalk as a kid and said "this is what I wanna do when I grow up"
Wonder why these idiots dont just put a layer of nets over the lake
@@aaaaaaa4821 I can see the reasoning but I think with how large the lake is, it would make it impractical. Also I think the birds would have the ability to actually chill on the nets but they would, 1. rather find a way to the waters edge and 2. Probably have a high likely hood of getting caught in them.

Instead of making the mining company to clean the mess they created, someone spend millions to scare birds. Weird.
@@georgisimeonov243 well it’s a bit difficult to clean up something this large.
A friend of mine told me this story a while ago. Apparently there was this mine that had been flooded. The area around it created a contaminated lake. Over the years the lake started to become cleaner, no one could figure out why. They finally figured out that it was the goose poop, As birds were going over the water and pooping in it, there were microbes in thier poop that thrived in the water and literally ate the contamination. Weird eh?
was the "person" who told you this story a goose, perhaps? Sounds like classic goose trickery
Dang now we need goose poop water instead of this filtered crap
The microbiome is one of the most important things to helping the environment, and people often don't recognize its significance. If you'll recall the BP oil spill... well, the main way that was cleaned up was not by siphons or solvents, but by dumping tons and tons of nitrate fertilizer into the waters. This helped blossom up the microbes, which would eat and process the crude oil.
The person worked for the Environmental Protection Division of the State it happened it. It was probably about 30 plus years ago. No. I'm not making this up. She's legit. Maga Nerd. She would not make up the story. Believe it if you want. I believed her, as she wasn't trying to BS me, just part of a conversation we were having about another topic. You are pretty smart fella aren't you
I love how (supposedly) it's less expensive to hire all these guys for 30+ years, use all this expensive equipment to deter the birds instead of taking the permanent approach of draining/filling the pit.
you would think it would be cheaper to put a whole net over the area?
They can’t fill it in because it’s flowing ground water. Plugging it would cause a pressure imbalance which could theoretically cause a sinkhole and make shit a lot worse.
Not to mention the millions it would cost to drain it and it’s not like you can just dump it because it’s toxic water so you’d have to safely get rid of millions of gallons of water…
That is expensive and not easy.
I know retards like yourself like to get angry at things you can’t comprehend but it’s not healthy.
The job market in Montana is horrible so even if a permanent solution was cheaper I think MT government and voters would still vote to keep these jobs funded. That’s just how people are up here.
@@mixeddrinks8100 A net over a mile wide lake? Yeah....no. And all that would happen is birds would start nesting on the net, which wouldn't exactly solve the problem, and eventually the net would degrade, then you'd have even more pollution from the giant net needing replaced. You'd also need to have pillars installed all over the lake to support the net over the water, with enough room to get out there under it to do maintenance. And we're talking a mile wide. We're talking about a whole skyscraper worth of materials and construction needed. Those bullets might cost a couple of dollars a pop. Maybe they fire it 5000 times a year....over 20 years, that's still vasty cheaper than a net or anything else.
There's a couple things you don't know. First - jobs in Butts are almost impossible to find. Most ppl I know that live there have remote jobs. Second - Berkeley Pit for better and for worse has been used in areas of studies for years - thankfully it's very rare to find a lake this messed up. Thirdly - this is groundwater that's been contaminated. It would be almost impossible to drain with how much water passes through there and if it was just filled, the groundwater would disperse.
That is a very good question and there are some resources out there if you are interested in further research!
Did they think about creating a second clean lake nearby in order to attract the birds away and cover up the water of the poisoned lake, for example with those swimming black balls used to cover up water reservoirs in order to minimize evaporation?
Imagine him going hunting with his buddies. Everytime he misses they pat him on the back and say "that's ok bud, it's how you were trained"
Imagine, your job is to save and protect the birds. And in your downtime, you hunt and kill birds....
thats funny
@@Semi_Successful Well you gotta do what you gotta do for money. Doesn't have to mean he really cares about birds.
@@Semi_Successful Hunters contribute between 1.5-2 billion dollars a year to conserving wildlife and habitat. They also volunteer their time and labor to maintain local state parks and lakes keeping them beautiful and clean for wildlife and future generations. Far and away more than any other demographic. The fact that we have an intact suite of megafauna can almost solely be attributed to recreational hunters. For the most part outdoorsman understand, and care far more about deer, birds, and fish than city dwelling hippies who don't interact with or see wildlife other than to drive through Estes Park to see elk from their car. If you actually care about wildlife you should be ecstatic about hunters and hunting. Just the facts.
@@Semi_Successful Hunting is totally fine if you put the food to use. The only hunters I despise are those who don't make use of their prey. There's nothing wrong with protecting birds from literally melting due to human activity and then hunting some for food, those are totally separate things.

This is our taxpayer dollars at work. Saving birds with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment.
I'm curious but how much would it cost to fill/cover the lake? I remember seeing a video by Veritasium where a lake was covered with black circular balls to prevent evaporation, if I recall correctly. But an additional result could be that it prevents the birds from landing on the water.
My thoughts exactly!
Interesting thought. I looked up some information and the pH of the water there is 2.5 which means it is highly dilute sulfuric acid. The pH of CocaCola is 2.5 as well. So yeah, it isn't good for animals to hang out in it for hours but it isn't quite as dangerous as I was expecting. At that low concentration, several plastics and rubbers are compatible with sulfuric acid, so the idea could work.
Yeah, I was wondering I they’re didn’t covered it with a huge net or something.
It’s likely cheaper to just keep things as they’re.

Spraying 10 feet up the banks holds it in place.
Just put a board saying "Toxic water , dont land here" 😺😺😄😄
"Has anyone pointed out the irony that you protect birds and then go hunting". As an avid outdoors man there is no irony here. Wildlife conservation and protection is spearheaded by those who use the resource the most. I love fishing and do everything in my power to protect our lakes. Without a healthy fish population I would lose sustenance, a passion and most importantly a beautiful array of water creatures beyond those predatory fish we catch.
Same can be said about land animals and birds! Wild Turkey re-population in Ontario was spearheaded by hunters. That has been a huge conservation effort success.
Dump thousands of floating balls in this pit, so that the entire water surface is completely covered and there is no water exposed!!
That way the aquatic birds won't even see the water and won't be able to get to the water ither.
legit feel the same as an avid fisherman, nothing pisses me off more then people tainting the nearby lakes and rivers by killing every non "food" fish they catch and not removing their old fishing lines and plastic garbage from the surrounding area, too many a time have i had to remove shitloads of braided fishing lines left behind by careless "fishers" that would otherwise surely have caused devastation and/ or death to the wildlife in the area. This all seems ironic since i like fishing myself and in doing so hurt the fish caugt on my line but atleast i do my part in trying to keep the fish and nearby seafowl population somewhat healthy for future generations. As you stated, hunters, fishermen and outdoorsmen are usually the people who are the most educated in and try their best to keep the ecosystem at a healthy rate so that other generations can experience and be part of it in the future, as ironic as it may seem to some.

While also saving birds and wildlife.
I'm jealous.

I live and Butte Montana and i can confirm everything in this video is real especially the giant toxic pit we live next to.
You can hear the alarm throughout the town like he said? Looks like a neighborhood not too far off from the pit
Mark loves his job and it shows. That's rare.
I'm so happy to see his legitimate excitement, good on you Mark!
Are you really that happy for him ?
@@jsl2411 Yeah! Seeing people happy makes me happy. Seeing people miserable makes me feel bad.
Mark seems legitimately happy about what he does and seems happy to share it with others. That's pretty cool in my book.
Who wouldn't like this job lol
Who wouldn't enjoy getting paid to keep the environment alive ironically by shooting guns at what you're protecting . Win win lol

Many people don’t understand that true, real hunters are some of the people who care most about nature and it’s wildlife
Preservation is key. Every hunter wants their kids to have the same experience they had...
Sure bud - if they care, why do they murder and kill? True nature and wildlife lovers are vegans and don't kill innocent animals for sport or food.
@@keithrichardscorpse1230 it's the cycle of nature, those who love nature may want to participate in it in a more personal manner.
Murder is a part of life, its natural.
Unlike the mass murder of cattle in slaughterhouse, I hope you understand
@@keithrichardscorpse1230 that's such a subjective statement, don't say "true nature and wildlife lovers are vegans", you are attempting to apply your own wishes and own self beliefs onto groups of people, please shut up, thank you and have an amazing day.
@@keithrichardscorpse1230 Hunters are not poachers or "murderers". There is an important difference between a hunter and a poacher. All hunters (not poachers) have a deep respect for the wildlife that they claim and they pay it back in the form of conservation. Each & every responsible hunter pays into conservation each & every year in the form of conservation stamps and the liscense (or "tag") fee$. That money then goes into monitoring & conserving wildlife on the entire continent and not just from hunting but also from natural disasters. Read on, i got more...
* This then gives jobs to those working in conservation and hunters are the only reason they get paid for having those jobs.
* The hunt itself (claim not "murder") also benefits the genetics, disease, and balances life as it should be.
* Tags are only issued at a rate that balances the population, not just kills it into some kind of fantasy extinction.
I'm no chemist, but wouldn't it be possible to neutralize the acidity by mixing certain chemicals into the water?
I'm surprised politicians aren't trying to sell the water to Flynt Michigan as mineral water.
I wouldn’t even need to set an alarm for this, like most soul sucking jobs. This looks fun and I’d probably be in a good mood waking up 99% of the time . It’s outdoors and it’s helping animals. You get to play with expensive toys and shoot guns. This guy has the life.

just to clarify- i have lived in Butte for about 25 years. not long after we moved here, a flock of geese landed in the pit and they all died. at first they claimed that the geese had died from 'something else', but eventually determined it was the pit water. it was then that they got serious about keeping birds out of the pit. I do hear the siren often, since I work pretty much just below 'lake berkeley'

I wonder if foam platforms would degrade from the toxic water? seems to be an easier and cheaper long term alternative to just fill it with recycled plastic floaters
I love the story and the passion, but I can't help but think that a bunch of fans with soft fins in the water would do a better job. Can't go on the lake if you keep getting whacked by something. Likely be way cheaper too.
Also, I wonder if there's some form of algae that would thrive on what's in the water and produce oxygen.
