A friend of mine told me this story a while ago. Apparently there was this mine that had been flooded. The area around it created a contaminated lake. Over the years the lake started to become cleaner, no one could figure out why. They finally figured out that it was the goose poop, As birds were going over the water and pooping in it, there were microbes in thier poop that thrived in the water and literally ate the contamination. Weird eh?
The microbiome is one of the most important things to helping the environment, and people often don't recognize its significance. If you'll recall the BP oil spill... well, the main way that was cleaned up was not by siphons or solvents, but by dumping tons and tons of nitrate fertilizer into the waters. This helped blossom up the microbes, which would eat and process the crude oil.

I love how (supposedly) it's less expensive to hire all these guys for 30+ years, use all this expensive equipment to deter the birds instead of taking the permanent approach of draining/filling the pit.
They can’t fill it in because it’s flowing ground water. Plugging it would cause a pressure imbalance which could theoretically cause a sinkhole and make shit a lot worse. Not to mention the millions it would cost to drain it and it’s not like you can just dump it because it’s toxic water so you’d have to safely get rid of millions of gallons of water… That is expensive and not easy. I know retards like yourself like to get angry at things you can’t comprehend but it’s not healthy.

@@mixeddrinks8100 A net over a mile wide lake? Yeah....no. And all that would happen is birds would start nesting on the net, which wouldn't exactly solve the problem, and eventually the net would degrade, then you'd have even more pollution from the giant net needing replaced. You'd also need to have pillars installed all over the lake to support the net over the water, with enough room to get out there under it to do maintenance. And we're talking a mile wide. We're talking about a whole skyscraper worth of materials and construction needed. Those bullets might cost a couple of dollars a pop. Maybe they fire it 5000 times a year....over 20 years, that's still vasty cheaper than a net or anything else.

Second - Berkeley Pit for better and for worse has been used in areas of studies for years - thankfully it's very rare to find a lake this messed up. Thirdly - this is groundwater that's been contaminated. It would be almost impossible to drain with how much water passes through there and if it was just filled, the groundwater would disperse. That is a very good question and there are some resources out there if you are interested in further research!

"Has anyone pointed out the irony that you protect birds and then go hunting". As an avid outdoors man there is no irony here. Wildlife conservation and protection is spearheaded by those who use the resource the most. I love fishing and do everything in my power to protect our lakes. Without a healthy fish population I would lose sustenance, a passion and most importantly a beautiful array of water creatures beyond those predatory fish we catch. Same can be said about land animals and birds! Wild Turkey re-population in Ontario was spearheaded by hunters. That has been a huge conservation effort success.
Dump thousands of floating balls in this pit, so that the entire water surface is completely covered and there is no water exposed!! That way the aquatic birds won't even see the water and won't be able to get to the water ither.
legit feel the same as an avid fisherman, nothing pisses me off more then people tainting the nearby lakes and rivers by killing every non "food" fish they catch and not removing their old fishing lines and plastic garbage from the surrounding area, too many a time have i had to remove shitloads of braided fishing lines left behind by careless "fishers" that would otherwise surely have caused devastation and/ or death to the wildlife in the area. This all seems ironic since i like fishing myself and in doing so hurt the fish caugt on my line but atleast i do my part in trying to keep the fish and nearby seafowl population somewhat healthy for future generations. As you stated, hunters, fishermen and outdoorsmen are usually the people who are the most educated in and try their best to keep the ecosystem at a healthy rate so that other generations can experience and be part of it in the future, as ironic as it may seem to some.
Dead birds are the best scarecrow ever (this is actually true). Birds are smart enough to realize that whatever killed a dead bird may still be lurking about.
Did they think about creating a second clean lake nearby in order to attract the birds away and cover up the water of the poisoned lake, for example with those swimming black balls used to cover up water reservoirs in order to minimize evaporation?
I like how this video talks about how it is possible to reverse humanities past mistakes on the environment. But can we all agree that it’s hilarious how their solution for keeping birds off the lake for almost 30 years was literally just a gun.
I'm curious but how much would it cost to fill/cover the lake? I remember seeing a video by Veritasium where a lake was covered with black circular balls to prevent evaporation, if I recall correctly. But an additional result could be that it prevents the birds from landing on the water.
Interesting thought. I looked up some information and the pH of the water there is 2.5 which means it is highly dilute sulfuric acid. The pH of CocaCola is 2.5 as well. So yeah, it isn't good for animals to hang out in it for hours but it isn't quite as dangerous as I was expecting. At that low concentration, several plastics and rubbers are compatible with sulfuric acid, so the idea could work.

Something that's glossed over here towards the end of the interview is the supposed irony of being a waterfowl hunter while loving and conserving wildlife. You can do both, and most do. You protect the resources the animals need to survive while not overhunting yourself. It's incredibly common and seems to be overlooked often by those who don't care for hunting.
Few people care more about wildlife conservation than hunters. Hunters spend more time in nature actually interacting with it than the average person. An average person, especially an average city dweller, will just parrot whatever conservation talking points sound nice enough to make them look good, while not having any real understanding of what they're saying. A hunter who spends a lot of time in nature and actively participates in the circle of life has a lot more reason to directly care about the biosphere of their hunting ground than an average person has to care about stuff that happens in some forest that they've never visited.
@@Thalanox if there were no hunters population would be out of control for all of the animals, hunters are necessary and useful but often hated by people who have only ever followed a trail

@@vincentpol its much more ethical to kill and eat an animal that has lived free its entire life in its natural environment than eat meat from a McDonald's that has lived in a barn its whole life being pumped full of steroids. Besides hunting is an important aspect of conservation, sometimes invasive special need to be culled to ensure biodiversity and the security of endangered species.
@@TolerablyInterested I agree. In a world with maybe 1 billion people. But as our population grows hunting is becoming less ethical because the populations of said hunted animals has dwindled dramatically.
@@vincentpol Hunter's care more about wildlife habitat and conservation than almost anybody in this country. Most hunter's want to see healthy habitat and healthy animals to support their sport. A portion of all ammunition sales goes to support conservation and makes up a large part of that budget. Hunter's are the ones who sound the alarm when animal populations are declining. Hunters in the 1970s were the first to recognize that they needed to change what kinds of deer they shot and began shooting either bucks or does depending on the local need to control the population. Hunting is essential to manage herds and certain species so that biodiversity is maintained. Hunters support wildlife study and the outdoors. The people most passionate about preserving the wildlife in this country want to do it so they can kill it later. Wildlife is a resource and we need to be stewards of it. People who don't support hunting have never been to the woods or know what animals are like. A guy can nurse a baby squirrel back to health and also go shoot them. Educate yourself. You'll find that the people most knowledgeable support responsible hunting. Poaching and hunting endangered species are deplorable to a good hunter.
just to clarify- i have lived in Butte for about 25 years. not long after we moved here, a flock of geese landed in the pit and they all died. at first they claimed that the geese had died from 'something else', but eventually determined it was the pit water. it was then that they got serious about keeping birds out of the pit. I do hear the siren often, since I work pretty much just below 'lake berkeley'
Without a doubt, fishermen and hunters seem to care the most about wildlife conservation and keeping our land clean and pristine and keeping open access for everyone. hearing about miners choking up talking about seeing thousands of dead birds in the pit is a good reminder that on an individual level none of us _want_ to create pollution; it's a problem that we create as an aftereffect, because it's easier or cheaper to do things the wrong way... or that sometimes there is no 'right' way, or sometimes even because something no one expected happened. It's a problem that we all create together, through our demands for goods, and it is something we all need to find solutions for together.
And human beings are still a fledgling/adolescent techno race with no parental model. It takes hundreds of years to get your sh|t straight. Seriously, wheb there are less people, there's a lower overall carbon footprint and thus no necessity to provide them with their human needs which in turns, damage the environment (yes, Thanos was right)
Protecting wild life is part of hunting. A portion of the proceeds from guns, ammo, and tags/licenses/stamps go towards conservation efforts such as this. Not only this but hunting keeps populations lower which lessens the spread of disease among large groups.
Infact sports men and hunters is the reson the dnr exists. Sportsmen do more than anyone else out there to fund that stuff. Every permit, all the tax on hunting goods goes back to the environment. Every tag for every deer ect. Classic case of people who know nothing about somthing makeing a opinion of said thing. A true sportsman reaches a point where he aims down that scope has a big ass buck in his sights finger on the trigger but doesnt take the shot, he is just happy to be out in nature. Dont get me wrong we will still shoot, but its not all about the hunt. Its not like football or another sport where the only place you want to be is winning. If the producer knew anything at all about conservation efforts in the states, he’d know that there’s no irony between Mark’s job and his love of hunting. By far, most of the money for wildlife and habitat conservation comes from hunters and anglers.
Common sense says there would be nothing to hunt, fish or trap if there were no animals as a result of no conservation efforts. Smug liberals like to pretend their vegan, electric car, concrete jungle lives are better for the environment than a rural hunter’s but many animals like boar and deers have almost no natural predators either because of escaped pets/livestock or human activity naturally driving predators away. so it’s the job for hunters to cull to preserve woodlands from getting overgrazed.

On the topic of a hunter being a wild game conservationist: I've found that hunters and fishers are more concerned with wildlife conservation than any group save actual conservationists. Think about it, the only way they can sustain their hobby is to sustain the populations, and that means working closely with and monitoring conservation and wildlife game laws. This was an absolute tenant of Native American livelihood. They understood that they could only survive along side the land, to nurture and maintain it so that the land could give back for themselves, their children and their children's children.
I appreciate that that he tried to not be wasteful and used every part of the wild turkey he hunted. I think it showed his respect for the balance of nature.
You're quite right, and I believe it's thanks to lobbying from hunters - who were concerned that logging and mining companies were destroying their game's habitat - that the first national parks were created.
Ask the Giant Sloth, Wolly Mammoth, and Horse on their opinion of native american conservation. Oh wait, you can't. The native americans hunted them into extinction. The affect hunters have on the conservation of wildlife is neutral at best. While some of the money collected for hunting tags goes into conservation efforts. The problem comes when hunters go out looking to kill the best, and biggest example of the animal they are hunting. It's the opposite of survival of the fittest. The fittest are removed from the gene pool leaving the weakest to pass on their weak genes.
I feel like the company that made the mines shouldn’t be able to just turn the pumps off and cause a massive lake of toxic water to every living thing.
They did that in Guatemala. There was a pristine beautiful mountain forest with wildlife and some Canadian (not sure) company convinced the government that they were sitting on the biggest unexploited vein of gold and that the country would benefit so much if they let that company develop it. They provided jobs for the locals for about 6 to 8 months. They barely paid a bit of taxes to remove all of the gold. They razed down the mountain and left instead a barren toxic wasteland. They made a pit into a lake so toxic with arsenic. They told the locals not to worry, that in a few years the water was going to be safe to drink. It still is toxic. It has killed many birds and animals. A small poor country with no resources to know what to do is devastated by such a thing. The locals are now much poorer and don't even understand how to deal with the degradation of the environment. That's why a few years later when the company tried to do the same in the neighboring country El Salvador, they knew to say no and protest and stop the mining deal. But decades later the damaged area in Guatemala has just grown from the contamination seeping further into nearby streams and lakes. Then those people whose environment has been destroyed think of the only solution to try to reach the USA and find a job there. Even if crossing the border illegally. We should understand that the world is one whole, interconnected and if we damage some parts of it, even if we think it is far away it will have repercussions for everyone of us. It's like spitting at the sky, will fall back down. I wish there was a way to hold corporations accountable for what they damage, have them clean up no matter if they did it to a far away country.

The bacteria was gone but the toxin was still present and viable. The piles were set on fire. This took place at the Stillwater Marsh in Fallon Nevada. It was a sad thing to see.
Maybe try putting a lid on that pond. Spray foam up the banks and across the water 4 or 5 feet thick. The entire thing! Companies will be able to tell you the best type of foam to handle the weather forever but the foam hardens strong enough to walk across. Maybe 6 or 7 feet but put a lid on it. Spraying 10 feet up the banks holds it in place.

I hate geese. They have overpopulated in the area that I live in AND they are a protected species with only a certain amount of time that you can hunt them in the year. They are mean and they shit all over the place. I want all of them gone.

Weird eh?
was the "person" who told you this story a goose, perhaps? Sounds like classic goose trickery
Dang now we need goose poop water instead of this filtered crap
The microbiome is one of the most important things to helping the environment, and people often don't recognize its significance. If you'll recall the BP oil spill... well, the main way that was cleaned up was not by siphons or solvents, but by dumping tons and tons of nitrate fertilizer into the waters. This helped blossom up the microbes, which would eat and process the crude oil.

You'd also need to have pillars installed all over the lake to support the net over the water, with enough room to get out there under it to do maintenance. And we're talking a mile wide. We're talking about a whole skyscraper worth of materials and construction needed. Those bullets might cost a couple of dollars a pop. Second - Berkeley Pit for better and for worse has been used in areas of studies for years - thankfully it's very rare to find a lake this messed up.

@@Thalanox Well said.

@@vincentpol And I'm guessing there's 200 million other Americans that are eating meat that have no concept of how things work. At least hunters can appreciate how the system works. So who's the real problem? LOL

Protecting wild life is part of hunting. A portion of the proceeds from guns, ammo, and tags/licenses/stamps go towards conservation efforts such as this. Not only this but hunting keeps populations lower which lessens the spread of disease among large groups.

You could tell the reporter thought he said something “smart” when he asked about the irony.
That's a big reason why I support good hunting.

I didn't understand at the time why he got so mad but now that I'm older,I definitely get it. I love watching birds and all that stuff now and completely respect everything about them.
You should have cooked them. Delicious

Sounds like something a goose killer would say
I hate geese. They have overpopulated in the area that I live in AND they are a protected species with only a certain amount of time that you can hunt them in the year. They are mean and they shit all over the place. I want all of them gone.

If it makes you feel any better the goose almost certainly renested. Predation of nests is fairly common and geese will keep laying throughout the breeding season if they lose their eggs to a predator or flood.
