- How to teach remotely with a Google Slides Hyperdoc. In this week's education technology tutorial, veteran educator and edtech enthusiast Sam Kary shows teachers how to set up a lesson during virtual teaching.
Teachers are currently finding themselves in an unprecedented moment where many around the world are being asked to teach lessons remotely. Although it's important to learn about different education technology programs, it's equally as important to create self-contained independent studies that students can't work on at their own pace. Hyperdocs allow teachers to create engaging, rigorous lessons that can be as high-tech or low-tech as you want. Once you learn how to create a hyperdoc, you can embed as many technology programs as you wish in order to keep your students engaged and interested.

I would like to thank you first for all the videos you post it’s really very helpful... and I wish that you can make video about how to create whiteboard recording using iPad ...
You're very welcome, Mariam. Can you send me an email at newedtechclassroom@gmail.com to explain a little more about what you're looking for in a video like this?
I try to plan 5E lessons but am always looking for resources. You talk about your 5E lessons video but I have yet to find it. Did you make a video that goes over 5E lessons? Thank you for all these great videos! It is has been a great resource as I am planning for the upcoming school year.
Hi Katrina, Thanks for your comment and question! I do cover the 5es in several videos, but only organically. In other words, I don't have one specifically about the 5es per se, however definitely look out for some content I'm releasing soon because I will be discussing the 5es in greater detail in those videos!
I think the video you are thinking of is this one: ua-cam.com/video/s9Vwcro03xI/v-deo.html

Thank you so much for all the time that you took to create this and share it with the teaching community. I am really looking forward to teaching some AVID College Prep strategies that I was worried would not translate well online. My question is, how do you create the hyperlink in the first place? Thanks!
You're very welcome! First copy the url for a website or document you want to create the hyperlink for. Then, go to Google Slides and click Insert -> Link, and then paste the link you just copied!

Wow! How do you do this? Your kick butt! Thank you for not rambling on and on. You are a mean lean teaching machine! Thank you so much. Question: how do I link the students to a google doc with a graphic organizer like you did? Is this a group organizer or can they be assigned to individual blank graphic organizers?
Ha, thanks! The way I have it set up here is as an embedded "view only" document, but you could also edit the back end of the link to say "copy" in order to force-push make a copy to students so that they have their own. Either way students will still need to share their documents back with you. Best of luck!
Do you have videos about how to use hyperdocs and kialo? I think it would be a great resource, your vides have been so helpful. Thank you so much.
You're welcome! I don't have a specific tutorial about Kialo yet, but can add it to the list!
Impressive!
Thank you!
Love this! Why padlet instead of Jamboard?
Hi Alethea,
Thank you! The two programs have different functionality. Padlet is much better for posting loads of different types of media (links to web pages, screencasts, videos, etc.). And students can comment on each other's posts/not delete each other's posts, etc. But Padlet doesn't have a laser pointer and background graph paper, etc. option like Jamboard , so not as functional as a live teaching whiteboard.
Thank you for the great video. I teach first and was hoping to see a simple hyperdoc as well. Thanks
You're welcome, Lisa! So glad it was helpful!

Thank you so much! I love this resource! Question: When adding a hyperlink for a Google Doc Note taker, does each student receive his/her own copy of the Doc to take notes on?
You're welcome! No, unfortunately. You'll need to have them make a copy of each document. Sorry, I should have explained that in the video. Another option would be to post the docs separately to Google Classroom under the same assignment and click "make a copy."
@@EpicMrsNeel Wow, thanks for this!
Do students then need to share with you or submit separately on google classroom? Is there a good way to keep this organized for the teacher?
@@EpicMrsNeel ...but what if they click on the notetaker doc more than once?
@@NewEdTechClassroom did you do a video on what / how this works. I could think about it and figure it out, but wondering if you did the thinkin for me already. ;)
Really helpful. I've made hyperdocs before but had never considered using SLIDES for it! So smart.
Quick question: How long would you expect a project organized like this to last (especially if teaching remotely)? Is this a few days? A week? Several weeks? I'm thinking about the Fall and I need guidance on pacing expectations. Thanks for the help!
Hi Meg, thanks for your feedback and your question! All of the HyperDocs I've shown in my videos were lessons I actually used with my students, and for the most part they complete them in a single week. I teach 6th grade, so I think it's totally feasible for students that age and above to do so. Lower grades might need to draw out the assignments a little longer.
Another factor is how experienced your students are with using technology. My students had already used all the apps shown, so they didn't require lots of time learning how to use the programs. If they need to, it will definitely take longer! I'd recommend starting the fall with a "tech onboarding" program whereby your teaching key foundational tech skills, as well as some of the basics for how to navigate the main programs you'll be using. That'll hopefully save a lot of headaches in the future.
Do you have a tutorial on how to make an animated video to go into a hyperdoc? I am trying to add GIFs into an animation and have no clue where to go. Thanks. BTW love your videos. They are saving my sanity right now.
Are you trying to add an animation in addition to a GIF? If you just want to add GIFs, these easiest thing to do would be to get the GIPHY Google Chrome add-on and then just drag and drop the GIF in. Are you looking to do something other than that?
Sam, you are AMAZING! Your videos are clear, well-organized, and engaging--by far my favorite source for integrating technology in the classroom. I have two questions. First, I'm not sure how to pull all of these components together. I'm relatively tech savy and have used many of these programs and platforms in the classroom, but I'm having trouble syncing the massive amount of tools we have at our disposal. For example, in the past I've created Slide books that I use with my in class lessons. They look similar to your Hyperdoc slides. Yet I just finished setting up the framework for my Google Site using your tutorial, in which you showed us a fantastic way of posting daily assignments and directions in conjunction with Google Classroom. Would it be redundant and confusing to students to put those directions on the Google Sites daily assignments and in a Slides Hyperdoc? Secondly, I noticed in your tutorials that you teach middle school HSS in California as well as I do--hello from So Cal. :) Do you ever share or collaborate you content specific lessons?
Hi Julie! Thank you so much!!
I think the best approach in terms of setting everything up is to have a clear, predictable system, and to keep it as simple as possible. As long as your instructions are exactly the same in Google Sites as well as the Hyperdoc, I think it's totally fine to have the instructions in two places. But if you start posting them in both places, just make sure you continue to do so so that students know where they can predictably go in order to find instructions.
I know I also show how to sequence a ton of different programs in this tutorial, but I wouldn't start out the year that way. Instead, I'd start by very slowly incorporating different apps and building out your suite and adding complexity as the year progresses.
I do share my lessons! I have posted a few to my blog at newedtechclassroom.com
For most entries I've included graphic organizers/lesson plans as well as how-tos for the programs.
Right now I'm actually no longer teaching social studies: I'm going to be a full-time technology teacher! So I won't be collaborating about SS, but am always interested in sharing ideas with others. You can also email me at newedtechclassroom@gmail.com because responses to my responses get lost in the sea of UA-cam!

This has been very helpful. I will be using your resources without a doubt. One suggestion: The word "effective" can be a tricky word when applying it to a political or social leader in an essential question. For example: Hitler was effective, but in a bad way. Other leaders were effective in a good way. Maybe we could ask Was Qin a good leader or a bad leader? (Just trying to help teachers avoid possible confusion with the students)
Yeah, I hear you. The intention with this activity was to actually determine his effectiveness as a leader versus whether he was good or bad from a moral standpoint.
I lovvvveee your topics and presentation very much and I've been learnng a lot. I teach 4th graders with special needs in the less priviledged zone here in New York City. I do understand the benefits of techonology but its a challedge to teach my population on how to access these tehnologies not to mention that It is difficult to "engage" prents to the learning of their children becuase of a lot of barriers, language being one. I've been using less tech- ways to solicit answers and engagement from my students (e.g. using 5x6 whiteboards to show their answers, write their response in the chat box., etc). Any tips Sam?
Hi Charlie, thanks so much for your feedback! If students have access to a chat feature I'm assuming they have access to a laptop? If so, I'd try to use some free programs with interactivity functions so that students can engage more actively with what you are teaching via live lessons. Tools like Quizziz, Kahoot, GoFormative, Pear Deck, & Nearpod will all be worth taking a look at.
I know those aren't non-tech solutions, but they are free (or have significant functionality with the free version), and easy to use, so hopefully they can help out a bit. If students have smartphones, they can also use the app version of these programs as well to respond live while you are presenting info!
Good informations, I really would like to know more about your remote teaching tools.
Thanks! I have a lot of videos on my channel about remote teaching tools, so I hope you find them helpful!
I am a virtual teacher and just learning about Hyper Docs. I wanted to ask you how often you use/create hyperdocs? Do you have a new one for each day or does it last for a week or a unit?
This is a great resource! One question, if I assign the slides in Google Classroom with each student getting their own, does the hyperlink for the Google Doc provide an individual doc for each student?
No, unfortunately it doesn't. I do cover some other options for how to address this in my Part II version of this video.

Thank you so much. You are an amazing teacher and resource for teachers. I am so glad that I found your channel. You are really helping me find ways to add rigor in a fun way. Is your district starting the year with remote learning? How will start? I always have done ice breakers and things to get them thinking creatively. I am curious how that will translate into remote learning. Thank you, again! Amy Hawkins 4th grade teacher, Oxnard, CA
Hi Amy, so sorry for the long delay in responding here! Yeah, ice breakers are definitely more of a challenge with remote teaching. I'm assuming you're no longer looking for ice breakers, but I am planning to put out some content about community building games to play with technology tools in the future. Hope the school year is going well so far!

Hi Sam! Thank you again for all of your videos, resources, and messaging this summer. We start back next week and I am hyperdocking every unit and lesson! So brilliant and thank you for introducing me to hyperdocs. I teach world history renaissance to modern day - do you have any other Hyperdoc lessons that you share or sell?
Hi Andrea, sorry for the delay, very busy times! I don't have any lessons to sell, but will be putting up resources on my website this fall. That being said, I also transitioned to a new teaching position, so my lessons won't be history based any more (I'm going to be a full-time technology teacher now!). Have you checked out hyperdocs.co/ to see what they have? Also Nearpod?
Best of luck with this upcoming school year, and I'll keep everyone updated as I post new sources!

This is another great video. I was wondering if you have a video or could explain how to add music to Google Slides. Thanks!
Hi Katie, TBH the most common way I add music is just by embedding a UA-cam video with music into my Slides. Another other option is go through the process of uploading an mp3 to your Drive and then inserting an audio file from Drive, though I find this far to tedious and no longer have mp3s, hence just embedding UA-cam videos.
Here's a blog entry explaining how to use the latter method: edtechawesomeness.com/2019/11/18/add-audio-to-google-slides/

Hi Sam. Awesome video! Thanks a lot. in your video you mentioned you embedded google docs in your google slide - Take notes. How can you assign a "make a copy google docs" for each student as a hyperlink in google slides? Is that possible? The thing is I want to provide feedback to students individually using google docs as a hyperlink in google slides
Hi, there are two ways you can do it. One is to manually edit the backend of the link so that it says "copy" rather than "edit" or "view." Another option is to copy the assignment link from Google Classroom and paste that directly into the HyperDoc. That will redirect students back to Google Classroom to open their assignment.
Thank you very much! I am following all your videos! I could not find the sample Hyperdoc in your website. Can you let me know how to download it. Thanks again!
Here it is! Scroll down to the Resources section: newedtechclassroom.com/how-to-teach-remotely-with-a-google-slides-hyperdoc/
I started using hyperdocs this semester. I have two issues:
1. I know how to make a forced copy, but ran into a issue when I linked a PDF. All my students got the same document. Not sure what I did wrong.
2. How do you make a hyperdoc for multiple classes? I linked an edpuzzle video on my hyperdoc, but the link was for only one of my classes. The other classes could not access their edpuzzle class.
Thank you for your videos, they are always helpful.
Hi Gretchen, I address these issues in this live show that you might want to check out: ua-cam.com/video/BO9s3FF-QBE/v-deo.html

Hi David, I'd find ways to make portions of the lesson into whole group interactive lessons (launching the engage phase, exploring content together with interactive videos/text, teaching how to use a creativity app, etc.)

What if I show you an app where you can easily create beautiful hyperdocks the way you like?
Can you use Max Thomason’s method in a hyperdoc. My system still uses EATS.
