HiFi Tube Pre-amp: Wiring the Rest

  • In this segment I show finishing up the amp by wiring up the preamp tube and the volume pot. This series is less step by step, as we just did most of this in the recent spud amp build, and will be more "high level".
    This isn't something I came up with and I want to credit the designer: You can see more here on this project:

    This simple circuit has gotten a lot of praise. I'm a fan of simple audio gear so I'm going to throw this together and compare it to the winner of our shoot out, stay tuned!

    You didn't employ the ground lift switch, it's very useful I found. It will be interesting to see if you needed it or not 😊🤗 nice build btw!

    Looks great ! Can't wait to know the sonic result. It's true that I never saw a pontentiometer at the output stage of a pre eamp. Anyway it's nice to experiment things.

      I guess it's no different to a pot on the input to a power amp?

      I plan to cover this, if the amp has a volume control, you should leave this one out.

    Yesterday I saw an ad that advertised radio for sale one dollar volume stuck on high. Thought I can't turn that down

    This has become a very high-quality device
    But. . . you can pimp this with a second tube. . . . if each channel has its own system. . . (this will reduce the crosstalk of the channels against each other)....
    Must be sounds great as it is!
    and thx for the vid!

    Very cool design. Thanks for the link to the schematic and site. I’d love to try this design with octal sockets for 6SN7, 6SL7, etc. too. Looking forward to the deep dive vid. Have you ever experimented with a transformer volume control? Thanks for another great vid!

      With a 6N2P the preamp sounds really amazing. I was using the excellent Gold Lion ECC83, but the 6N2P is in a different league.

    Can't wait for the next video.
    When using mondorf capacitors does it matter which direction the input signal enters considering it has a foil.
    Have you experiment with this, some say yes it has a direction some say no. I just noticed mine had one lead shorter than the other.
    Thanks again for another great video !!

      I normally try to wire them with the signal going left to right with the writing on them facing me, but I screwed up and wired one of these backwards. I wasn't going to throw it away over that mistake. I've honestly not heard any difference but ideally you do want the outer foil going to the lower impedance.

    Great video! Where do you source your hookup wire? Teflon or PVC? And where do you get your lead wire sleeves/coverings? Subscribing to your channel has really improved my diy construction skills. Keep up the good work!

    • @SkunkieDesignsElectronics
      @SkunkieDesignsElectronics  2 роки тому

      I'm just using wire sourced off amazon and same with the lead sleeves. It's just PTFE tubing designed for 3D printing.

      @@SkunkieDesignsElectronics ah yes that's what I thought. Could it be modified for phono input?

    • @SkunkieDesignsElectronics
      @SkunkieDesignsElectronics  2 роки тому

      @@hyperion8008 That's really a different animal: it needs a TON of gain and is VERY susceptible to hum and noise. Would likely need DC heaters, more power supply filtration etc. Not going to happen with 1 tube like this pre-amp uses.
