That transition (3:11 to 3:21) when Ben Kingsley goes from being on stage to being in the black and white film gets me EVERY SINGLE TIME. It's flawless.
I love how Melies starts speaking so hesitantly, as he's been so removed from speaking to others for so long and has forgotten how to do it, but as soon as he begins the speech about mermaids and wizards, the years fall away and he's that young dreamer again.
Pick up Peter Bogdanovich's Who The Devil Made It, a collection of director interviews. Every single one of them is amazing. Especially the guys you kinda don't know... It's a real treasure. I really mean this. Von Sternberg was a bit tight lipped, but you can always read his great Fun In A Chinese Laundry autobio.....
This is where George's heart truly lies, not as a grumpy toy merchant in a crowded train station. But its also a pity because he finally recovered his passion 7 years before his death
"Come and Dream with me." I saw this in 4th grade. It got me fascinated with clockworks. My teachers had shown it to the rest of my class. Those were the days when things weren't so serious. As children, we had nothing to lose. That's why the grown-ups were so sad. They're all children who had lost themselves. As I look back at my era, with one more decade of youth approaching (by current standards). I do wish to go back. When people weren't so angry. When the internet was more free. When there were wonders to behold. I know that many are returning. We all are. We have to. It's in our blood. Have you ever noticed that an oscillating spring is always gently jerked back? With the climax of its force at the maxima and minima? If you understand that. You understand not only this year, but the ages. See you on the other side. It will all be okay. I promise you. But only if you believe...
It’s quite a bitter surprise to me considering Scorsese’s words on the current state of the film industry in recent years. I love superheroes. But sometimes we need a break from them.
When I was a child I cried when Hugo’s dad died. Now as an actor and scholar of the seventh art, now that I studied this man, I cry in this scene. Once again… thanks Mr Méliès.
Georges Méliès is the giant all other films makers stand upon, without him pioneering the art of special effects, the very art of film making would have been seen as a novelty little slices of life but nothing more, he put heart and story telling into his films. He's the reason we still sit there and wonder while we watch movies.
CU Movie Buff Besides this movie and Iron Man 3, I’ve also seen Sir Kingsley in Gandhi, Thunderbirds, Night at the Museum 3 (RIP Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney), the Boxtrolls and Tuck Everlasting
Because he's in-demand, an award winner, instantly recognizable, successful, respected, and has $70 million in his bank account? You sure must have a peculiar definition of "underrated."
The artistry put in here! It's beautiful! I don't know why people thought this movie was weird. Even me. I hope I'll be able to give this film another chance over break.
Shane Aycock Trust me, I didn’t know what to expect from the trailers. The finished movie was more than I thought it would be. The second hour was when it gets really interesting with the film history and the images onscreen.
Totally agree. This movie has aged better than Avatar imo but didn't even get half the box-office or publicity that one did. Besides, I just think Scorsese has a better and more consistent filmography than Jim Cameron. Goodfellas (my personal all-time favorite)and Last Temptation of Christ are so much more weighty and have better performances than say, Titanic. This is the most effects-laden film Marty ever did but just the acting alone hits me. Asa Butterfield tearing up gets me every time.
George: "He saw a broken machine, and against all odds he fixed it." George may be talking about Hugo fixing the automaton, but this is also George talking about how Hugo had fixed him from a grumpy old man to a successful film creator
I just came here from watching the real Trip to the Moon film without sound. Last night, I revisited this beautiful movie on Netflix. Come and Dream With Me sounds like very wise words. The first time this ending I was a 19 year old high school senior. I’m 27 now
these are the films referenced in consecutive order: - The King of the Mackerel Fishers 1904 - The Conquest of the Pole 1912 - The Music Lover 1903 - The Kingdom of the Fairies 1903 - The Brahmin and the Butterfly 1901 - The Witch/The Fairy Carabosse 1906 - Whimsical Illusions 1909 - The Merry Frolics of Satan 1906 - The Kingdom of the Fairies 1903 x2 - The Merry Frolics of Satan 1906 x 3 - The Impossible Voyage 1904 - a trip to the moon 1902 x 2
Is this Scene got music references to silent films because the music change's rapidly and the music at 4:14 kinda sounds like the morlog music from Fritz Lang's metropolis

I KNOW MAN ITS SO CLEAN
Is that one of his real movies?
@@timowthie yeah I think once the transition hits everything is actually Melies’s films
Indeed! I thought that was crazy when I first saw it.
I love how Melies starts speaking so hesitantly, as he's been so removed from speaking to others for so long and has forgotten how to do it, but as soon as he begins the speech about mermaids and wizards, the years fall away and he's that young dreamer again.
One of the best children’s films ever. A true love letter to the magic of film, with a stunning performance by Ben Kingsley.
This was the most influential film that I have ever seen and also one of the most beautiful.

I've watched the movie for a school Project
So now in looking for clips to review it for

Yeah
It's still gets me. This beautiful scene, shows how majestically filmmaking is more than just images, it's true passion :')

This film was really well acted, extra kudos to the kids
If you're a cinephile, you'll love this film.
Scorsese is the best.

I think I weeped the final 20 minutes or so of this movie especially here
Sir Ben might be the most underrated actor of our generation.
Not really. He has a knighthood. hehe.
Well, it didn’t help when he starred in Iron Man 3
And an Oscar, I mean he's been fairly recognized for his colossal talent, I'd say.

George Melies is one amazingly talented and awesome filmmaker in my opinion! 🤩😉👍
It will always be my favourite movie. 💖

You could see Asa Butterfield's blue eyes from space
love this scene
Cameron said it was the best 3-D film he'd ever seen. And he was right. It was perfect.
It was when 3D went correct. It's like the tricks George Meliés came up with. Same sort of illusion.
Piotr Segal I haven’t been much into 3D in recent years. The last movie I saw in 3D was the Grinch.
George: "He saw a broken machine, and against all odds he fixed it."
