This is the very reason why I like this channel. It reminds me why I began learning woodworking in the first place: for my wife and my daughter. I didn't want to be that Dad my little girl couldn't rely on to fix anything... So I learned how to fix and build anything for her and my wife. My little tip for buying lumber at Lowe's or Home Depot: buy the 16-ft lengths if you can. They come from the lower part of the tree that's more stable, and they sit on the shelves longer because not as many people use them, so they have a longer time to dry out and show any twist. Take your battery circ saw with you and cut them up in the parking lot to fit them in your vehicle if needed.
I only buy 2x4s if doing actual construction projects. For woodworking type stuff, I just buy 2x10s and 2x12s and rip them down on the table saw.

Fellow Arkansas woodworker here. Used to do construction, but became a teacher. At the start of Spring break, when we went virtual at school, wife got a booth in Russellville and had me make shelves, benches, and other simple things since she thought I was bored. It is a small booth, so only have a few things at a time. My skill has gotten better. Been watching your videos for tips. Done a few custom shelves, bit finally got an order for a farmhouse table! Spent an hour at Lowes looking for lumber... There are good pieces, you just have to go through the entire stack.

Last year my buddy and I went to a cabinet shop outside of town and checked out the pallets of scraps and let me tell you, they had a lot of pallets of hardwood scraps. Prices ranged from $50 to $300. We bought one for $150 at $75 each and holy crow just half of that was a lot of wood. I'm still using it today. I will probably see if he wants to go in on another pallet soon. We got a great variety of wood like oak, maple, poplar, some walnut although not much of that and some type I think is alder but not too sure. Mostly panels of various sizes, some large some small. Any rate if you have a cabinet shop nearby check them out.
    Another great video Matt. Thanks.

I can drive 4 hours to Lumber Mills in the mountains but, down and dead Mesquite and Ironwood are plentiful. I go deep into the desert and chainsaw my own, rip down to usable pieces, but no Amish 'round these parts pard. Got lucky once I still have two 2"x14"x6' ironwood slabs, I'm just waiting for them to talk to me and tell me what project they want to be.

Here is my best guess for your wood just from the couple seconds I could see them, in the order you pulled them out. Number 1,3,4,5 and 7 all look like cherry or red oak. 2 and 6 are definitely poplar. 8 does look like maple. Don't know about the cut offs. The red one is definitely cedar. The darker brown one is walnut. Next to last look like cherry again. Last one may be ash or white oak. Hope this helps

I ordered this box and got red oak, white oak, ash, poplar, a little walnut, a piece or two of maple and a very nice piece of purple heart. My thoughts are your box was very similar, and neither box had any cherry. It's easy to tell the white oak from the red as the white oak is noticeably more dense and thus heavier (also the color is a little different). White oak is prized for boat building since it's tough and resistant to the elements (and the reason the USS Constitution got its nickname, "Old Ironsides"). Anyway, there are good pieces in this box for mallets, small jewelry boxes or other small projects. I will buy it again.

Here's you a cool tip a lot of people don't know. If you go to Bartons, and you see any damage what so ever in the lumber, they sell it to you 1/2 price. So say you see a 1x6 with the end chipped, go up front tell them, and it's yours 1/2 price.

One is Badger Hardwoods (in Wisconsin, I think) and the other is Wall Lumber in North Carolina. I ordered from Wall because the price was slightly better, but they have an order minimum of 10 BF per species. I was able to get 10 BF each of 8/4 hard maple and cherry (surfaced two sides, one straight edge) from Wall for less than 8 BF of each would have cost at Badger, and both prices blew away Woodworkers Source.

The owner is a really good guy and has thrown in a extra piece or two for me a couple of times (don't tell him I told ya that.. lol). There is also a place here in Conway called Urban Timbers that turns locally harvested trees into ruff cut boards but you have have the tools to finish them into dimensional lumber. I really like the idea of it but, the prices are really not that much better when compared to the finished lumber you get at the other hardwood dealers and the selection is limited to what we have around here. The stock is hit or miss also because obviously they only have walnut for example if they have cut one down recently.

One odd place you can sometimes get big sheets of lumber from is church pews. Sometimes a church redoes their space, and replaces their pews, and they get down to a few left over (usual sales are from expanding or renovating established churches to newer churches, who may have less space) and you can sometimes get those for a surprisingly low price.

I am doing a project for a friend right now making a wheelchair ramp to get into her manufactured home and the wood I got from the "Orange Box" and it is the worst. I let it sit in my shop area for a day while I was setting up the cuts and it twisted very badly. I took it back and went to the lumber yard in my area. The wood does cost a bit more but the quality is amazing. I will never buy wood from the Big Box stores any longer. I just looked up "Contractor's Wood Supply near me" and it was right there in my area.

Okay, I have a challenge for you. My friend is handicapped from 2 strokes. Subsequently, she has suffered contractures on her right side so can't use her right hand at all. I'm trying to make it easier for her to cook (her passion). She wants to be able to shred cheese, carrots and such. It would also be great if she could slice tomatoes and other veg. I know it's a BIG ask, but if I could make her something that would help her do what she likes, I would be grateful!

About a third of that box was softwood. I saw poplar, pine, cedar as well as the following hardwoods: cherry walnut, ash and I believe white oak. I haven't watched to the end, but there should be ~$25 plus shipping there. That 1x6x8 cherry would be about $2 here.

When you're shopping a big box store for lumber, even if it's just for shop furniture or a jig for a table or band saw, or a router table. Look for lumber that is marked KD-HT. That stands for Kiln Dried-Heat Treated. Generally this lumber is going to be much straighter than just about anything else they're selling, and that's because it has been kiln dried AND heat treated. The moisture level in this lumber is going to be very low compared to lumber that has only been kiln dried. The benefit of this is that you don't have to really worry about the lumber twisting, cupping or bowing, after it has been ripped, re-sawed, or cross cut.

I have recently found a lumber source that is close to me, and may have a second source. You're right, local is the way to go, if you want wood that is not warped, bent or twisted. The store staff has no problem ripping down a 1x12 or a 1x8, and I don't think I'm getting charged for the cut. I paid roughly $4.50 each, for two 6 foot 1x4s. I don't think that's bad for straight wood. I have one other place to check out that is closer, but I think I'll spend more there.

This might be common knowledge but I can get decent pine at Home Depot, what you might consider select or #1 without buying the pine that is actually labeled as select grade. If you look for the 2x12s, you can typically find boards that have a combination of rift/quarter sawn and plain sawn. You have to go through the trouble of ripping the lumber yourself since part of the 2x12 will be plain sawn and not ideal for fine furniture. But typically, this is a pretty good value especially compared to the select boards they have in stock there. Typically, you can get about 2 2x4s of good rift/quarter sawn lumber and then a third 2x4 of flat sawn. This usually puts the cost of the 2x4s at 50-75% the cost of their select labeled pine, which usually is not even that good of quality. At my local Home Depot, we have southern yellow pine that comes typically wetter (12-20% moisture) than the other lumber so I try to stock up and dry it in my drying room so it's ready to go later.
The rift sawn portions of each board are near perfect--tight straight grain with hardly any knots if at all. Some have quarter sawn portions instead of rift sawn which are easier to find. It's kinda rare to find rift sawn boards in 2x12, sometimes I'll get the 2x10s which I've noticed have a higher likelihood of having rift sawn boards but 2x12s are the best value, if you only consider the amount of lumber you get and the dollar cost. At my Home Depot, the 2x12s are on a different aisle than the 2x4s--at mine, it's sort of mixed in with the treated lumber so you might have to look a little bit to find them. You'll have to rip cut and cross cut the boards some to remove the big knots but if you take the time to process the boards some and dry them right, you'll have cheap but durable furniture-grade lumber.
I thought I saw you check out their 2x12s when you were at HD so I thought I'd explain further since I don't think you mentioned the possibility of good lumber from 2x12s.
