  • Runnings as 6Z03 Welwyn - Welwyn via Peteborough, we see the grinding machine doing its thing through the station on the up fast, also note that it sprays water before and after it's gone through to avoid any fires.

Had never heard of these before today. Was driving through Kenilworth at night and saw all the sparks, followed the train to Coventry, lost it as it neared the city and turned back. I think it said C1202 on it. Stopped to get fuel and as I was getting back into Kenilworth it was heading back they way it had come, but diverted onto another track and headed towards Warwick. Immense amount of sparks flying, and quite big clouds of dust too. Spectacular to watch. Glad I happened upon it.

I live in NY USA on Long Island, right off a main train line here, across from my home, one of these came through last night and made about four passes all told, from 1:30-2 a.m. or so,
and was beeping what sounded more like a car horn than any normal LIRR train horn, and was highly annoying!! haha. I looked out, having been awakened by the commotion,
and saw the sparks flying from the front car of the train. This model was older looking and was only about two large cars in length, with three bright LED type head lights on the aft section.

These trains pass me by frequently. Guess living next to a railway has its perks? It looks so abnormal and violent, but it's designed that way. It's pretty at night, too.

Currently there are 3 of these loram grinders in the UK. C2101 c2102 and c2103. They use anywhere from 10.000ltrs to 25.000ltrs of water per shift depending on how many chains/miles they are grinding that night.

What's the water for? I am guess to cool and thereby temper the metal..

Probably, I get that but all that water so close to the live ole set up must be dangerous surely?

@@metallitech Possibly that and to put out any fires that the sparks from the grinding may start.

Strange that they don't use a vacuum , here in Europe grinding machines collect the dust

restore the profile and remove irregularities from worn tracks to extend its life and to improve the ride of trains using the track. Rail grinders were developed to increase the lifespan of the tracks being serviced for rail corrugation
