- In 2013, a group of scientists launched The Brain Initiative. The aim? To revolutionise our understanding of the human brain, including working out how to read a person's thoughts.
Dr Rafael Yuste, Director of Columbia University's Neurotechnology Center, believes that we may soon be able to ‘reprogram’ the brains of people with diseases such as schizophrenia, and help restore the memory of people with Alzheimer's.
But we may also soon be able to change or control a person's thoughts.
With estimates that it will take just 10 years to develop wearable mind reading tech, what can we do to protect our minds from neurotechnology?

Your interpretation of their statement of intent, may be charitable, may be correct; but just as easily could be just as vacuous as it is flippant.
With the continuing erosion of civil liberties, in service of an ever expanding police-state, such a lackadaisical response seems to be the perfectly manufactured outcome of a person unhealthfully comfortable with authoritarian impulses.
Legally, and this is something you might want to spend more than a microsecond considering, things which are not specifically mentioned in a law or practice, may not necessarily be directly inferred; but by the same token, nor are they necessarily prohibited.
This is the deliberate obfuscation, the gray area, in which corporate-authoritarianism often operates.

Being a grumpy old man, I've seen far too many good ideas repeatedly be subverted for a lot of horrible purposes over the years; so I tend to be pretty skeptical, and, maybe, a bit too cynical.
But, as Lily Tomlin used to say, "No matter how cynical you get .. it's never enough."

Research into this should focus solely on self-defense against this technology. It is inevitable that an unscrupulous corporation or nation-state will use this for their personal gain. Inevitable.

I imagine most places will adopt a protection of information act, but just like what we have for our personal privacy on our electronic devices, services will be allowed to put a clause asking the user for permission. If you give them permission to have this access then they can use it how they want. And the technology will be so alluring that many will be willing to give up their rights for it.

Nope, there is technology out there where it is being used, remotely you don't even know its been used against you, it reads thoughts already, namely smart dust, the Governments are already onto it, scary and dangerous stuff ahead for civilization, believe me.
How many of us actually read the information before we click 'Agree on our phones? Do you?
Just imagine when criminal gangs or the mob get ahold of this technology. They could easily get your passwords and financial accounts. It would bring an end to undercover police work as you cannot hide your identity from someone using this tech.

This will be abused. Altering another's perceptions is really, really fucked up, even if the intent is to help them.
If technology can give a blind person sight, but someone were to hack that and alter what they "see", that would be wrong wouldn't it? Is that any different than altering the vision of a sighted person?
And this will go beyond vision. Would you trust someone else at the wheel of your perceptions to not abuse it?
It's the way of humanity: anything good has the potential for abuse. Predictive text even announced a lot of the sentence I just wrote. I was vexed because I like to think I'm more original. Let us hope the soul of humanity trumps the baseness of which we're capable.

I agree that there has been many instances where scientists weather forced by the companies they work for, or not, have done what you describe. But it is absolutely not correct to accuse all scientists of that. It really shows your harsh bias to put it in those terms.

I am living in Utah, US. People can remotely access my mind and thinking. They are doing so without my consent. Is this the neural surveillance? I don't know how they gained access and if there are things that was implanted into my body without my knowledge.
I have been stalked for a few years now. The stalkers use loud high-pitched sounds and electric waves to attack. There are some kinds of high frequency buzzing sound associated with the electric wave. My head and body can feel the constant vibration day and night. Sometimes it is really intense. I was woken up by the high-pitched sound and the electric waves most of the night now. It has injured and disabled me. It puts our life in danger. Not sure if this is the weapon that they use to access people's mind and thinking.
The attack happened anywhere I went. At my home, other person's apartment, shopping mall, in a park or in a car. Where did those high pitch sound and electric waves originate from? Satellite? Cellphone Tower?
I have been watched and monitored day and night. The stalkers make loud snapping sounds to my home walls and ceilings to let me know when they are reading my mind. Not sure how those snapping sound get to my home. I don't know who gave them the rights to do this without my consent. How can I protect my own thoughts and ideas?
Not sure what to do or if anyone will believe me. But this is really happening.

There is already mind reading technology/application without physical connection. Using the application, one can connect to the other person's brain and read his thoughts and also they can talk where only to whom they have connected can hear it. I'm in India and my neighbour is torturing me with it. I think there has been been a leak of secret technolgy and my neighbour has got it somehow. I'm not able to find the technology/application since it is not on the public forum. Can anyone help me regarding this.

Well the government is not a monolith, I'm sure there are many behind close doors that would or are readily condemning this kind of research. But at the end of the day it's really not the government's job to regulate what neuroscientists are and aren't allowed to research.
I've been experiencing something similar to this. There is a group of people that possess a machine that enables them to see, hear, and read my thoughts. They do this from a distance without physically connecting anything to my head or brain. Has anyone heard anything about this?

10 years ago I read a book about this and it mentioned The Brain project. I told my family and they all laughed at me and called me crazy. All of this is coming too fast! God help us! Scary times ahead for all humanity!

I see a huge problem with this (apart, that it creeps me out like hell). Every mind is different, you can't find two that are the same. Even if the minds of the same ethnic group are similar, you cannot use a standard way for reprogramming. I can only imagine that it will plant a sense of extraneousness inside of one's mind, if something else lived in their heads apart from them. This could result in a breach with oneself, which would make matters worse. Please don't meddle with the mind, even just threatening so sets people on edge. We really don't need another global hysteria. Also please leave people's genome alone. Two wishes for a peaceful XXI century.

@@trixter88 as some other people here pointed out, they have more concern than trust in this dubious project. The mind is a curious thing, more complex than you could form it with a rock-drill. Although I don't doubt that there are some minds simple enough that you could archieve progress with such methods. What works with rodents, doesn't necessarily work with humans. Unless scientists develop care and empathy for their patients, this whole phantasm will stay in the realm of Dr Mengele and his cruel experiments. Psychopaths can never heal, because they fail to grasp the very thing that allows healing. Western medicine has long ago abandoned to treat patients as a feeling, breathing, living creatures, they simply exclude mental and spiritual aspects of life, although they are very well aware that they play an important role in healing.
