Came for Azula and stayed for Azula. She was a prodigy even till her last fight against Katara and Zuko. What went wrong was the constant fear and need for approval from her father. Zuko was just as bad before he switched sides. Only he got his mothers love and uncle iroh. Azula is my favorite character.
Azula. Sigh. She deserved better. She went crazy and i wish she would have been given help. She was raised in such a terrible way and had noone to help her see sense. To realise that what she was doing(her cruelty for one, which was definitely strengthened and encouraged by Ozai. That’s something he was “proud” of her for) wasn’t the right thing. At the end of the day, both her and Zuko suffered from abuse from Ozai. At least Zuko was no longer living with him and was able to meet new people, learn new perspectives, and get help for his own issues. Azula? Nope. I wish we had gotten to see her grow and change in a more positive way. I wish we got a happier ending for her.
Azula was amazing and while it is true that she was raised poorly in a few ways, she still made her own choices. She wanted to please her father. At any cost. Zuko wanted to please his father too but eventually came to his senses and went through the pain to do so. Azula did deserve better but she obviously wasn't trying to change things to better herself. Which may have been a cause in her mental slip.
Slipstream She wanted to please her father yes. But i think the way he treated her, and the fact that she had noone to approach or even talk to her about such things, noone to really be “close” with, is what fueled her wanting to make her proud. Mai and Ty Lee? They were scared of her, they didn’t really try to get through to her because of that. Zuko had Iroh constantly trying to get through to him over the years and he was constantly bitter, but then he met Aang and later on changed through his experiences. Azula never had that chance. Zuko never wanted to change either until he got those chances and experiences. Of course her choices are still her own, but i think that if she had more people trying to get through to her, and more experiences out in the world(not directly under her father’s influence), she would have tried to change and eventualy would have come to her senses. Just like Zuko. Though she wouldn’t have been all happy fun times, she certainly wouldn’t have turned out the way she did.
Honestly, Iroh deserves more credits for how Zuko turned out. He set the foundation. Though, they kinda helped each other. As Iroh had his own fair share of problems. Losing your child, your only one at that, is a bummer one cannot possibly fathom.
Also love how, during the last agni kai, you get to see that part of Azula that wished for a different outcome. That part of her, jealous of Zuko, who was able to free himself off those shackles. That part of her that knows, she's already in too deep and there's no turning back.
It's actual good story writing and as real as fiction can get
At the same time, remember that both kids spent time with their mother, originally, and Azula showed psychopathic or sociopathic behaviors from the beginning. At the least, strong anti-social behaviors that stacked over the years. (She had been the one to suggest that Iroh was no longer a good candidate for the throne after he lost his son in war, having no legitimate heir, with 0 prompting at all. She was always screwed up.) She started sick, and this isn't exactly the kind of world where you can get help for something like that. At least, I never saw a legitimate psychologist. Add any of those with narcissism, which she and her father clearly had (her father also had some terrible psychological issues, clearly), and you get someone who *can't* be saved. Not by anyone. She'd have just manipulated counselors, too.
And she did have those older sisters/twins to guide her. But she turned on them.
But we all like a good protagonist. And she was a very good, very clever protagonist. We love to hate and hate to love them.
The real victim here was how terribly the whole, wonderful, well thought out and awesome story of A:TLA was handled when it was made into a live action movie.
Actually interestingly enough Azula was supposed to get a redemption in season four which apparently was cancelled due to the horrible live action film. A tragedy really. She might have a redemption and happy ending in the comics but I am not sure as I haven’t read them.

when you find a chance to break your cycles
the moment you forget that you are suffering, the moment you think it's not suffering, but more like charging up, preparing, for a long waited vengeance, some people rise the normal way but those are forgotten quickly, the few who rise up after suffering or going through a lot, the few who rise up the hardest way, like apparently, you, those are the ones, whether they were heroes or villains, are remembered, for centuries. those are the ones, victorious or not, write the pages of the great book of history, many are simple heroes with the same backstory that a hero has, but few others, are just like asula, villains, with a unique backstory, the only thing that makes the difference between those few, is whether if you're going to lose, like asula, or if you are going to achieve victory.
hope this helps you remember we are all asulas, but unlike asula, we have the power to rise victorious at the end of our series.
