ScreenPrism Can you do one about why the sequels were lackluster/failed? It's almost as interesting to see why a series declined as it is to see its success story. Great videos, keep it coming.
Which one? Sequels have almost always been lackluster in terms of story telling and world building. If you're more cynical, they've almost always been money grabs that pander to the audience. Devoid of the same spark that made the originals so popular. There are so few good sequels that you can actually name, it makes sense to look at why they're different from the norm. As opposed to looking at why the norm is the norm.
WarriorofCathar I actually liked Terminator: Salvation. It seemed like there was some story to it that was worth while. Rise of the Machines and Genesis did just feel like money grabs.
Well I won't go shitting on you for liking it. But for me it was so much squandered potential. It could have been so much more. They did a decent job of building the post apocalyptic world but then we got a strange convoluted plot about some half human terminator somehow meeting with an angsty John Connor. Some how Skynet planned that John Connor would attack the very facility that the Hybrid Terminator was being developed in, somehow run into John Connor and somehow would lead him into a Skynet trap to meet the original T-800 and then finally sacrificing his heart for John Connor.Perhaps the terminator salvation movie that I wanted would have been about John growing into his eventual role as the leader of mankind and leading the final push to destroy Skynet, which brings us to Genesys and would have neatly closed the loop.Genesys was a fan service and a greedy cash grab.
The phrase "No fate but what we make" sums up exactly my problem with the other garbage sequels for the movie. T2: No fate but what we make T3: we can't change our fate IMO, T2 wrapped the story very beautifully. There is really no need for T3 or Genysis. Story-wise, Salvation goes to the right direction, but the movie quality is nowhere as good as the original two movies. To me, Terminator series ended with T2.
I've read rumors that Cameron is coming back for T6, and ignoring the last 3 movies. Linda Hamilton and Arnold are also coming back, but again, rumors.
Before I saw the two films (aged 14) I already knew that Arnold would sacrifice himself at the end of the sequel, but that line was completely unexpected and so well written. It's the perfect example of the rule of three. First time he's brings it up "What's wrong with you're eyes?" We all have a chuckle. Second time "Why do you Cry" we all sit up and pay attention. Third time we all cry for him.
John Connor: No, no, no, no. You gotta listen to the way people talk. You don't say "affirmative," or some shit like that. You say "no problemo." And if someone comes on to you with an attitude you say "eat me." And if you want to shine them on it's "hasta la vista, baby." The Terminator: Hasta la vista, baby.
The more heartfelt and deep, emotional elements within Terminator 2's story are what elevate it above all other big budget action/science fiction films of the era and even to this day in my view. The evolution of these charters between the first and second films are nothing short of brilliant, every other film in the terminator franchise either attempted to and fell way short of or didn't even bother trying to recapture the same emotional tone that T2 established.
The problem with some sequels. There is no reason for it to exist based on the events of the first movie or past sequel. Terminator 2 has the ideas the events of the first movie is speaking of a sequel.
The Matrix would have been pointless if there was only the first one. It's about Neo's philosophical journey, and ours too. With only the first one, the philosophical message was incomplete.
I think that's what they tried to do, but when the movie was about Neo's Psychological journey the things everyone said were at times pointless and boring, like when he talked to the oracle and the Merovingian they say the same thing Neo really only changes during his meeting with the architect he really changes, with Oracle and the French dude he is just confused and doesn't want trinity do die then rest of the movie is just action and a introduction to Zion, so what I'm saying is though sequels were necessary so Neo can become the one, they sucked but yeah you right and this comment is pointless
The last scene in Terminator 2 always makes me tear up. I've seen the probably a thousand times since it came out when I was a kid. It still grips me from start to finish every time.
Fantastic analysis of one of my all time favorite films. T2 is the bar that all have to measure up to. Thumbs Up and Liked. You have a new follower here.
Everyone remembers the Terminator apologizing to John for having to die as sad, but Sarah shaking his/it's hand out of real acknowledgement of him as a developed individual, even after everything she went through in the first film is more epic, IMO.
I already love this channel for what it is, but at this point.. Their quality is just getting so much better by the videos released. T2 is my all time favourite film and I just love how this channel fits to what I actually watch and like. Thanks ScreenPrism! Looking forward to more of your content.
I so love this channel. The insight you give these films - even ones I've seen dozens of times - makes me appreciate them more. Your dictation is clear, and to the point, not making you sound pompous, or too relaxed. Keep up the good work.
The thing about Cameron "pulling the rug out" (re: The Terminator is actually there to protect John) is that the ad campaigns revolved about how he was the good guy in this movie. It seemed like everyone knew going in, so it didn't really have that big of an impact when it was revealed (though I didn't see it till it was out on video at that point)
I always think that, even if someone woke up one day from a coma and someone said "lets watch T2" and they had never heard a thing about it, I still think people would be stupid not to figure out that, New Cop Terminator Bad, Old Terminator Good, before that "Get Down" moment.
You should do a video on Taylor Sheridan's unofficial morals trilogy (Sicario, Hell or High Water, Wind River). I've heard different names for the trilogy though. They're all very similar thematically. I feel like there's a lot to analyze in them. :)
I never knew the first two films were originally intended as one film. Well, it does makes sense then that the second act would "surpass" the first act.
It seems all the best sequels are perfect continuations of the stories whereas the worst ones are very forced. T2 Judgement Day and Empire Strikes back are both part 2's to the original instead of simply being a 2nd movie. This can also be a bad thing like in recent movies that are parts of a story but made only to make more films thus dragging the story longer than it needs to be like the Hobbit. I believe Shrek 2 is also one of the greatest sequels ever made and far surpasses the original but it's again a perfect continuation to the first movie.
If you've never seen the Director's Cut of this movie, watch it! They cut out so many important scenes and context, it really makes the entire movie MUCH better and much more logical. It should have been the theatrical release!
Arnold was the ideal guy for the role. Practical effects are the best, i love that. Too much CGI makes me feel like im watching a cartoon and i am not interested in cartoons.
Early 90s 'We can use CGI to bring Dinosaurs and advanced cyborgs to life, this is incredible' now 'Ugh we don't have to go outside, we'll CGI a sunset in later. No just CG that car crash...'
This film is among only two other films, Godfather and Alien in that the first two movies feel like both sides of the coin, they work out perfect together, you can't imagine one without the other, and there never needed to be any more after those two
I like how Aliens does it too. They didn't even try to redo Alien. Instead of Horror in Space, they gave us a Starship Troopers pre-boot. Seriously, Hudson calls it a "Bughunt." Twice. "Another bughunt."
I wish more hollywood execs looked at good sequels like T2, Empire Strikes Back, Godfather 2 etc and used the formulas found there. It's all just rehashes and remakes. Thanks for the video.
Great video, it's like a wicked tribute of the film. I love this film and its messages but the first one will always be that little bit more special for me because of the more dark 80's horror feel and music.
Easily the best sequel of the time. Expanded on the first one, gave a us a story worth watching, and one of the best hero's of all time. Also god dammit the ending gets me every damn time.
Thanks so much for this video. You are right. This is not just a special effects showcase. It is a human story we can all relate to. It is sad but true the later efforts are more hardcore sci fj and less humanity. It is such a smart idea to reexamine the classic to see what works. Also, Linda Hamilton and Sarah Connor are my heros.
im 22 years old and only recently watched the terminator movies, both were so freaking amazing i could not believe my eyes. Sometimes i dont get how we went from movies like Alien/Aliens or Terminator1/2 to the crappy action movies we have today. Plus, i know this sucks but, nowadays the female characters and even the male characters feel really off and slight sexist if not really sexist in most cases, but these old movies were so amazing and to me there isnt as nearly as much social difference between the female and male characters, Ellen Ripley is awesome, the Terminator is awesome, Sarah Connor is awesome, and so on and on. There are just so many great characters in these movies i love them. Unlike a ton of horrible action movies nowadays with horrible characters, god so many of them suck
Used to think T2 was the best, but I've come around to thinking the first is better if only because of its tighter pacing and grittier aesthetic. Still one of the best sequels though
It's a shame big-budget hollywood movies nowadays (including pointedly Cameron's Avatar) can't learn a thing or two about the value of restraint when it comes to special effects. Reserve them for impact rather than plastering the movie in them and robbing them of their power to amaze and dazzle.

Great videos, keep it coming.
Seconded.

i felt the same, T3 and Genysis sucked balls and Salvation could have been so much more if it had a better story but i still liked it
I've read rumors that Cameron is coming back for T6, and ignoring the last 3 movies.
Linda Hamilton and Arnold are also coming back, but again, rumors.
@@CyberDragon10K its not a rumor anymore amigo !
One of the greatest sequels of all time!
"I know now why you cry" My eyes swelled from just the 5 seconds they showed, im such a wuss lol
You're not the only one. I cried as a kid and showed my ex this movie and the waterworks started lol. Crying during T2 is acceptable lol.
Before I saw the two films (aged 14) I already knew that Arnold would sacrifice himself at the end of the sequel, but that line was completely unexpected and so well written. The Terminator: Hasta la vista, baby.
yortzandat in others words damn you James Cameron
It makes sense though. Real men look up to warriors.

Yep it's sad how T3 just tried to be T2 and failed.
This was the first movie that truly blew my mind.
Music at the end gets me every time
These images here from both T1 and T2 films are incredible!
Damn man, they sure don't make em like they used to.
Very good year of content of this channel. Keep the good work screenprism
I be back....to watch the next video.
Thank you!
The problem with some sequels. There is no reason for it to exist based on the events of the first movie or past sequel. Terminator 2 has the ideas the events of the first movie is speaking of a sequel.
Agreed.
Like the matrix, what is the point if Neo is basically a God
Terminator 3 could have been just as good and the final twist was damn awesome.
The last scene in Terminator 2 always makes me tear up. I've seen the probably a thousand times since it came out when I was a kid. It still grips me from start to finish every time.
Fantastic video, as always. Why your channel doesn't have ten times the amount of subscribers is beyond me.
Hey thanks! We're getting there! Channel is basically only a year old. Appreciate everyone's support.
Deniro Kitsune Their GoT's videos get on trending from time to time, but I don't know how much that matters
When the scene of Sarah and the terminator shaking hands came up, I got chills.
This movie never gets old
Fantastic analysis of one of my all time favorite films. T2 is the bar that all have to measure up to. Thumbs Up and Liked. You have a new follower here.
GOD her voice is so much better than watchmojos chick *SUBSCRIBED!
Agreed. watchmojos sounds like she's reading off a teleprompter where as here it sounds very much like her own thoughts and ideas
These videos are about thoughtful analysis, not quick, shallow trivia points. That's the biggest difference.
Completely agree. The content and her presentation of it is so much better than a lot of others out there.
The narration in the beginning scene of T2 by Sarah Conner, personal speaking, is one of the best in all time.
But WatchMojo has time stamps
Everyone remembers the Terminator apologizing to John for having to die as sad, but Sarah shaking his/it's hand out of real acknowledgement of him as a developed individual, even after everything she went through in the first film is more epic, IMO.
"She's not my Mother Todd!!!"
Masterpieces! Both T1 and T2.
God, what an masterpiece
I already love this channel for what it is, but at this point.. Their quality is just getting so much better by the videos released. T2 is my all time favourite film and I just love how this channel fits to what I actually watch and like. Thanks ScreenPrism! Looking forward to more of your content.
Please do a video on Nightcrawler, Old boy, Whiplash and matrix🙏
456praveen Ubale Whiplash 👍
I so love this channel.
The insight you give these films - even ones I've seen dozens of times - makes me appreciate them more.
Your dictation is clear, and to the point, not making you sound pompous, or too relaxed.
Keep up the good work.
Great video! T2 was the first action film I ever watched. I remember I was 8 years old in 1999. It remains my favorite film till this day.
T2 is extremely underrated.
Still prefer The Terminator (1984), the most perfect self contained science fiction films ever made
The thing about Cameron "pulling the rug out" (re: The Terminator is actually there to protect John) is that the ad campaigns revolved about how he was the good guy in this movie. It seemed like everyone knew going in, so it didn't really have that big of an impact when it was revealed (though I didn't see it till it was out on video at that point)

Brad Fiedel OST + a EPIC shoot (thumbs up), that f*cking ending get me every f*cking time!
Manly tears!
You should do a video on Taylor Sheridan's unofficial morals trilogy (Sicario, Hell or High Water, Wind River). I've heard different names for the trilogy though. They're all very similar thematically. I feel like there's a lot to analyze in them. :)
That's a great suggestion actually. We may just have to do that! Thanks Jake.
Outstanding.
Great analysis, one of my favorite movies of all time.
I never knew the first two films were originally intended as one film. Well, it does makes sense then that the second act would "surpass" the first act.
I read somewhere that Cameron wanted to make T2 the first movie but didn't have the budget so he changed the script.
The Sapien yep, me too. search UA-cam for 'terminator deleted scenes'. You'll be surprised ;)
if you see the deleted scenes from the first movie it would make more sense, taking out Cyberdyne was Sarahs original plan
It should have stopped at part 2
Affirmative.
Agree all the way
Ugh that hit me right in the nostalgia. Damn I love this movie so much.
classic flick
I have to watch this movie again, it's been years, such a great film
It seems all the best sequels are perfect continuations of the stories whereas the worst ones are very forced. "There's no fate but what we make for ourselves... She's going to kill Dyson!
"Cmon! CMONN!!(squeeker)"
+Nick Mattio shit! She's gona blow him away!
Imagine if Cameron had the budget to make T1 and 2 as one film in 1984. Wow, that would've been a great film.
Still the best film of my life. Amazing video.
Great video. Wonderful explanation of what makes T2 work so well and still hold up today
I don't know why, but I could listen to this narrator talk all day.
This a fantastic analysis of my favorite movie of all time. Keep up the good work, ScreenPrism!
Great in-depth look at probably the best sequel in Cinema history
Can you please do a video explaining the matrix?
If you've never seen the Director's Cut of this movie, watch it! They cut out so many important scenes and context, it really makes the entire movie MUCH better and much more logical. It should have been the theatrical release!
This Arnie-is-the-good-guy-twist would've been great if trailers and marketing hadn't spoiled that in advance, which they did again witz T-Genisys.
this movie always hit me on a very emotional level and still does. brilliant film
Great analysis and video. Thanks.
Pretty nice channel, I dig everything you've done here. You just got yourself a new subscriber.
Arnold was the ideal guy for the role.
Practical effects are the best, i love that. Too much CGI makes me feel like im watching a cartoon and i am not interested in cartoons.
Early 90s 'We can use CGI to bring Dinosaurs and advanced cyborgs to life, this is incredible'
now 'Ugh we don't have to go outside, we'll CGI a sunset in later. No just CG that car crash...'
Watched it in 3D yesterday. It was awesome!
I remember seeing this in the theater. I was very young and thinking back got spoiled in terms of special effects.
you are currently my favourite UA-cam channel. Can we get one for Twin Peaks when it finishes up in a couple of weeks
This film is among only two other films, Godfather and Alien in that the first two movies feel like both sides of the coin, they work out perfect together, you can't imagine one without the other, and there never needed to be any more after those two
A GriffinTV Empire Strikes back?
Leon Lawson That's an amazing sequel, but it is a big tone shift from the more light hearted adventure of the first one
aliens is a huge tonal shift from alien is well from horror to all out action
For me there's only two Terminator movies, the rest is just expanded universe for profit with no artistic value of any kind.
I like how Aliens does it too. They didn't even try to redo Alien. Instead of Horror in Space, they gave us a Starship Troopers pre-boot. Seriously, Hudson calls it a "Bughunt." Twice. "Another bughunt."
If a Terminator can learn the value of human life, perhaps so can we..., What a masterpiece!!!
I wish more hollywood execs looked at good sequels like T2, Empire Strikes Back, Godfather 2 etc and used the formulas found there. It's all just rehashes and remakes. Thanks for the video.
I still argue that the original Terminator movie is my favourite romance.
Great video, it's like a wicked tribute of the film. I love this film and its messages but the first one will always be that little bit more special for me because of the more dark 80's horror feel and music.
Great analysis
so less cgi and more actual acting + hard work = better movie. Who would have thought :)
My friend Told me this Terminator was better than the original and I completely agree 😃
T2 Proves that practical effects are better than CGI
I just realized one of the guys working for cyberdyne systems is one of the lone gunmen from the x files
Easily the best sequel of the time. Expanded on the first one, gave a us a story worth watching, and one of the best hero's of all time. Also god dammit the ending gets me every damn time.
Awesome analysis! Thank you very much!
T1 AND T2 BEST MOVIES EVER
Both are great movies. The first one will always hold a special place for me, though.
because james cameron did it
James Cameron also did much the something with Aliens. Also why I am optimistic about the Avatar movies.
Jesus Christ this video was great! *Subscribed*
James Cameron made two of the best sequels of all time. That makes me curious for what his plans are for Avatar 2.
Heard Schwarzenegger change was his people saying killing and playing the villain would negatively affect his career. Not Cameron.
Terminator Exodys will feature Werner Herzog as the main character.
"Come with me if you want to pull a boat over a mountain."
Will he also be in Terminator Levytycus? I heard he's signed up until Terminator Second Chronyclez.
can you do more of these about action movies?
Keep up the great work
im 22 years old and only recently watched the terminator movies, both were so freaking amazing i could not believe my eyes. Sometimes i dont get how we went from movies like Alien/Aliens or Terminator1/2 to the crappy action movies we have today. There are just so many great characters in these movies i love them. Unlike a ton of horrible action movies nowadays with horrible characters, god so many of them suck
T2 uses the same time travel trope and again a t101...but now is a good guy.
Thanks for the info. I bet most people were lost.
0:32 - 0:54
No, the reason we watch Terminator 2 is because of it's badass action scenes lmao
Best director ever.
Great essay 👍
Thanks a lot! This was an amazing analysis.
Cool video. One of my favorite movies of all time...
I'm just here for Brian Koch
Piranha II: The Spawning (1981) was James Cameron's directorial debut.
I kind of agree with her opinion.Great video.
I didn't even know this was the 2nd one til t3 came out lol
Well written narrative.
This is why i love Kindergarten Cops. Put Arnold's Terminator persona in even more comedic way.
Used to think T2 was the best, but I've come around to thinking the first is better if only because of its tighter pacing and grittier aesthetic. Still one of the best sequels though
Fantastic video!
Is the Brian Koch , who wrote the script the same person, who adapted Manos to stage play?
Jesus! Nowadays that rear projection really stands out! Too bad the trailers gave away that Arnold was a good guy upon it's release....
It's a shame big-budget hollywood movies nowadays (including pointedly Cameron's Avatar) can't learn a thing or two about the value of restraint when it comes to special effects. Reserve them for impact rather than plastering the movie in them and robbing them of their power to amaze and dazzle.
4:09 - Stuntman Terminator lol
When he says 'Goodbye at the end 😭
i was informed that original trailer and poster for movie shows Arnold's t101 as good guy now, so that ruined part of mouse and cat play from start of movie
7:21 - I think Snape can also figure in this category.
Just imagine they wouldn't shown in the trailer tat Arnold is the good guy in this movie. Luckily for many people (me included), those weren't the time of internet and social media.
