Personally, I found this to be a little confusing. What works for me is to think about whether I would be making a left or right turn onto base from the downwind. Or, when joining from the direction of landing, thinking about how to turn into final. So, really, once on a leg of the pattern, which direction to turn for the next leg.

I’m constantly using my heading bug to remind me of the runway used for takeoff or landing.

The graphics for hands are both left hands. When you say put your right hand in line with 22 on the DI I want to use my left because the graphic is a left had. Look at the thumb!

He clearly is using a “hand” for all hand-related graphics. Whether it’s right hand or left hand doesn’t matter, honestly. Listen to learn, it refute or nitpick. If you’re using your hands for this, something’s broken anyway. 200-180 = 20, 20 + 360 = 380, 380 - 45 = 335. Enter at 335, turn to 20, enter base and final, et voila, 200. It’s also very easy to visualize on the compass, without hands. Practice.

@@RetreadPhoto The video begins 'do you know your left from your right' and then goes on to use a graphic of a left hand to represent a right hand. I will be picky as I'm a pilot and details matter.

Haha that’s the first thing I thought too. I was beginning to think I didn’t know my left from my right but I got the point of the video.

This was very difficult to me when I first started to solo. I found that by drawing a sketch of the airport runways on the top of my hand to refer to made it easier to visualize.

Another great video, I learn something new every time I watch one.
I have 200hrs. And never knew, or forgot what RP was on the VFR sectional chart!

How to pick the correct runway at an uncontrolled airport is the first order of business then the correct pattern.
Pick a runway number that matches the wind e.g. wind is 140 at 10, pick runway number that is close to the wind i.e. runway 14.

I usually get ready for this in my flight planning. I’ll look at the airport diagram and visually see which side of the runway I’m coming from, and which side of the runway holds the pattern. In other words, left or right traffic will depend where the airport designates the safe zone. For example if a populated area is on side of the airport, the traffic pattern may be having to stay on the opposite side. This would be a reason why one runway is left traffic, and the other is right traffic. But if no, such restriction is in place, and there is no right pattern, then it’s just a matter of looking at the airport diagram, seeing which quadrant you’re coming from and figuring how to enter a 45 for the downward. If you use your hands the way it was depicted somebody is going to have a broken wrist. Please also people don’t try this in the airplane without an auto pilot.

This takes your mind out of the overall situational awareness and into the small world of your DG. I would argue not the best thing to be happening as you're approaching a field and must build a correct broader picture in your head (if no other reason - at least to make correct position reports).

I tell my students that left and right turn directions only apply when you're already in the pattern (that rectangle in the sky just above the airport).

I only got consistently good (in most, but not all, circumstances...) at my right vs left as an adult. Maybe it's just my own quirks but using the same hand drawing for both right and left hands contributed to some confusion for me when you were talking about using your hands in the cockpit. One thing that might have helped me on the first watch-through would be that for the second scenario, there is no indication of any traffic at that airport, thus crossing/approaching at traffic altitude and entering the downwind is OK. (I'm still in the habit of crossing mid-field above traffic pattern altitude to confirm what is going on in the pattern and on the ground, doing a "teardrop" and entering downwind at a 45 deg angle.) But this is a very useful discussion given how easy it is to mix up right vs. left!

Why did you use a left hand graphic when saying "use your right hand"?

Real world flying is being on a 10 mile straight in for rwy 33 make calls every few miles for a senior weekend warrior to make their first call saying they are turning base for rwy 15 when you are on a mile finale for 33.

I feel like the technique of using your left hand to fly the most convenient entry doesn't really answer the question of whether it was a left or right pattern (I'm still new to all this stuff, so maybe that's not what it was meant to answer, I'm still a bit overwhelmed with all the info). But as I was following along, my first reaction was to take my left hand and overfly the runway to right turns to downwind and base. that seems more convenient to me than what you did, since you aren't changing the direction of your turns at all

What about crossing midfield and then doing a teardop (270) turn opposite the pattern to enter the pattern?

This is very confusing. Instead: Set heading bug to runway direction. Left hand pattern: Keep the field on the left. Right hand pattern: keep the field on the right. Simple.
