@JUST ME 80's and 90's!
So many remember"s.
@JUST ME x,,z,,,,,
Still listening 2021🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾. Timeless vocals😎🎤
Very classy vocals should do some new music
This record only reached number 54 on its original release in the UK charts. Then on its remix release in the mid 90's only got to 36. Proof that the most perfectly written pop songs are not normally hits. This is a masterpiece.
and how 'before today' wasn't a # 1 hit is beyond me..
It doesn't have to be number one. That's just a number.
EBTG wrote so many amazing songs before Missing that were criminally ignored. This was one of them!
Probably explains why it didn't enter my radar in the 90s, such a perfect piece of music
She makes Grown Men Cry !!
Every time i hear this song .........❤
When my parents separated, my mother was always listening to this album when it was her turn to pick me up or drop me off at my dad’s place. So this particular track imprinted on me as a theme for driving between two homes. Wasn’t until I listened to Language of Life as an adult that I could really appreciate how there’s a lot of heartbreak throughout this album’s theme but with much more optimism that you’re gonna make it out okay ✨
I completely agree with your insight. It is bitter sweet.
How come that reminds me of the audio book I am partaking of there right this comment in June 2022, David Copperfield?
Nice comment of yours different from the most saying nonsense.
My view is other, I've always been fascinated by the voice intro and the rhythm later and yes, there's a bittersweet atmosphere around as they say.
es muy melancolica. un abrazo amigo
it is very melancholic. a hug friend
Totallyagree,defining times 🌹
Tracey Thorn still gets me teary-eyed with this song, Missing, and her rendition of Corcovado. Nothing has changed since the 80's in my heart when it comes to her. Love her now as much as i did in my early 20's.
Yes, their Corcovado is my favourite song, too. LOVE from Taiwan❤🌺
EBTG ist perfect and delicate songs !! ❤ Corcovado version ❤️👍
I love her voice so much. Such an underrated group.
Not underrated by me! Over the year's there about 20% of my listening.
@@Chipnolan6 exactly... people need to stop calling "underrated" something they don't listen to often.
I listen to this song at least once every week,so melodic!
Same thoughts over here.
magic voice!!
Been a fan since I was 17 now 57 they still sound amazing

What? They have been out for 40 years???

Where'd you been?
Parecem não, são ótimos até hoje 😊

Tracey has, by far, one of the most beautiful female voices...
Agree! Her and Corinne Drewery!
This is my favorite of their songs.
Yes. I’m torn between her and Elizabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins. It’s a tie.
Miss her so much. Her voice brings me near to tear every time.
TRUE!!! FROM THE PHILIPPINES!!!
Timeless, sophisticated, soothing... just like coming back home, throwing one's shoes on the floor and slumping on the sofa with relief
How could anyone not fall in love with this song. It touches the soul.
Very underrated band ...
no they're not
Duo
What a band accompanying Ben and Tracey on this album. Omar Hakim, John Patitucci, Larry Williams, Lenny Castro and sublime saxophone solos by the late legendary Michael Brecker
+Stan Getz tenor sax on "The Road"
Michael Landau by guitar.

didn't know that, great insight
Wow I didn’t know it was Omar on drums, great drummer
I believe some band don't go "Under-rated" they're simply Eclectic enough to have their "Own Aficionado". Bands and Groups like Everything But the Girl, Swing Out Sister, Johnny Hates Jazz, and a host of other went under the radar of mainstream, but were hits among us. Tracey Thorn, Corinne Drewery, and other artist carried powerful voices, hold uniquely feminine touches of sincerity that resonate through their songs.
Tracey has such a beautiful voice, clear and tone perfect, I've been listening to this band since 1984. thank you for the music Ben and Tracey x
Tracey has an awesome singing voice!! Absolutely!!!
I feel so weird but every time I hear this song I get a lump in my throat and want to cry
This song gets me every time. Every single time.
Takes me back to better times , oh how I wish I could go back in time ❤
Same, same
1990 was 30 years ago 😮... I was 18 then.. geez ... I loved this song ... where did the time go ?
So many people that were here are no longer.😪 I understand too well,Bless you!
right!!!!! I was 15 and used to play this song OUT!!! Good times
I was 12, and I loved this style of music. I preferred VH1 over MTV back then!
There are many stories people have shared here that really capture their sentimental connection to this song. Musicians may hear a west coast vibe, but I feel this is very English 'town' in its essence. It does capture a zeitgeist of the late '80s where jazz was instrumental in so much music. I'm afraid the days of poetic music are far behind us now. ❤
She could have been as famous as Adele with that lovely voice.
What makes this group so wonderful is even before the song itself is over you are nostalgic for it.
LOVIN TRACY'S VOICE ALL DAY LONG!
Just as good now as it was when I first heard the song
Really does hold up....great writing and singing.
I heard this song when it was first released on VH1, immediately bought the album, and proceeded to buy all of EBTG's albums - and now, Tracey and Ben's. They are so underrated.
The chorus at 1:27 has always been such a haunting beautiful line where she sings "stretching away as far as my eye can see" Love it
The Language Of Life is one of those albums I can’t go too long without hearing. Just brilliant.
i love the way ben watt looks a tracey. i love people in love! it's such the greatest thing on earth
One of the best songs!
Beatiful music...........
Thank God for these good old songs!
This was the first song that I ever heard by EBTG, all the way back in 1989. I was 14 then. I fell in love with it and went out and got the album, The Language Of Life. Though I have to admit that much of it was a bit too grown up for me to truly appreciate at the time, I would return to it time and again over the course of 30 years, even after going through many different phases of music listening. I would always discover something new in the songs, as I rekindled my love with the album every now and then. TBH, while the songs are top notch, the production is a bit too slick and sounds dated at times. Later on, of course, there was Amplified Heart (which is probably their best) and Walking Wounded, both of which I also fell in love with. On the whole, EBTG is one of the few bands whose music have stayed with me... with their melancholic melodies, forlorn poetry, and of course both of their distinctive voices (Tracey as well as Ben's). Their music is like an old photograph that reminds me of something I shouldn't forget, even though I tried so hard to forget. Wisdom in a pop song? Who would've thought it could happen?
Very well articulated!
If I may riff on the opening sentence of your closing paragraph - their music is like finding a photograph of times I regret forgetting
I was 30 in 1989.....I really loved hearing this song, really fell in love with Tracey's voice, totally agree with many of the comments here that EBTG were and probably still are terribly underrated! Really pleased to have latched onto them again! 😀
Saw this vid on an episode of Midnight Love in 1990!
This is the first song I heard by Everything but the Girl. Brilliant duo! So underrated!
This is such a SoCal sound of the time and still a sound nostalgic today.
God I still love this group ❤ My gf back in the early 90’s got me into them..I still playing missing(I’m a DJ) at the club I play! I can’t blve they finally have a new album coming out after what 20 years? ❤❤
When?
Heard a rumor about that also, funny thing was also a dj in the 90's, still am but only rarely.. ran several venues back in the days.
what a great sax solo on the end of an amazing track
The song takes you to a beautiful place specially if you have good memories with this song.
yes bro... many memories🥂
man it really does.....I can remembering going to Germany to visit my GF at the time who was stationed @ Ramstein AFB & driving around the countryside in Germany with her & hearing EBTG, Brand New heavies & swing out sister.......Just sublime
Well said, Sir🤛😇
This song drive me to heaven
2:08 Absolutely love the increasing urgency each time in the repetition here - it’s as if she’s chanting a spell to make sure he calls her home
She is such a special talent. She is similarly masterful on 'Paris Match' with the Style Council. Her voice and her phrasing make that song.
john Pattitucci on the bass. Have always LOVED his basslines. Very inspiring and talented bass player.
Ah yes and agreed love his work with Chick Corea too.
didn't know it was him -- should read their credits at some point and study up.
I haven't listened to this classic since back in the day! I've got tears running down my face, sweet memories of the nineties are flooding back. What a voice! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I remember watching this on VH1 in the 90's and I wish they would had played it more. "The language of life" was such a great album along with the other ones prior and after. Thank you for blessing your music in like Ben and Tracey.
Absolutely !
I missed it!? I do not recall watching this video on VH1 back then? (My memory is pretty good) was this on VH1 is the USA? I first heard this song on a smooth jazz FM radio station in the late 1990's. Just found the video several moths ago while browsing EBTG videos on YT.
@@christopherhazell420 Yes. I recall seeing it a few times around March of 1990.
@@christopherhazell420 I'm from South Africa and I remember VHS classic was the only channel I would definitely see this on. They would play it randomly or when they have their early 90's playlist and this use to play. It could've of been Vh1 UK
One of the best songs of the 80s
When I first saw this video on MTV's 120 Minutes I loved the video and the song even more, this song is why I became a fan of EBTG
Me too!
This song was most played in Smooth Jazz channel radio in Wichita Kansas.
From The Language of Life, 1990
Unmistakable voice, underrated band
For a brief moment I am still married to the most beautiful girl in the world and life is worth living.

I hear youJeff same here...amazing what a song can bring back a flood of memories..You hang in there !!
One of my favorites from the 90"s.
I've been a fan of Tracy York and this band since i was 12....EBTG was, is, remains EVERYHING. Who is still listening to this amazing band in '21?
My favorite songs of the 90s! Beautiful lyrics. Still remember first seeing this video on MTV at MEC house. What amazing memories..
Been looking for this song forever! Never new the name of the band! but I got it now! Miss this type of music! Thank you for the memories!
Yet another great solo of Michael Brecker, that guy always gives surprises
Saw ebtg 1993 I think it was in Liverpool amazing such a shame they won't do live again I think tracy n Ben would be astonished at how many people want to see them so come on guys get back on the road we're all waiting
Somebody in the comments mentioned memories. So here's mine. As a teen I spent many midweek late evenings from about 1988-91 scanning the medium wave to tune into stations from other countries. One hot night in the summer of 1990 I stumbled across Driving being played as I did that. I didn't care what the station was, which country it was broadcasting from, or anything else really. I just felt transported by such a gorgeous tune.
Once it finished I fiddled with dial on the radio again. And then found a really, really faraway/fuzzy "Memory" by Elaine Paige being played. Two very different songs, but both with their own beauty. Less than ten minutes of my life, and over 30 years ago, but still in my memory. (No pun intended.)
I used to listen to a lot of radio in the 1980s and early 1990s. I loved pop music and still do, taping songs from the radio. Sadly, I no longer have any of those tapes but even if I did I do not have a cassette player to listen on. I remember when Radio 1 was on medium wave and its switch to FM. Ditto my local radio stations Red Rose Radio in Preston and Radio City in Liverpool. I loved it when it was possible to pick up stations from further afield such as Signal in Stoke ( I was in Southport) or Marcher in North Wales. An odd occurrence happened in France this Easter when me and my wife were there and had to use a somewhat decrepit courtesy car from the garage where the MOT ( controle technique) was being carried out. When I put the radio on ( medium wave only as it was an old car) it tuned into an English speaking station somewhere in Europe playing pop. I have no idea what it was as the sound was intermittent but we both remarked on how odd it was as it almost certainly cannot have been a station broadcasting in France. It was not Radio Luxembourg either although I do not even know if it is still going.
Gorgeous tune from a great time, do miss EBTG.
I have to admit I'm a bit more of a hard rocker/metal head, but deep down I love to listen to pretty much ALL genres of music. This record and pretty much EVERYthing from "Everything But The Girl" has always been one of my favorites. They have such a classy, dreamy, jazzy sound, and when ever I hear this song on the radio I always turn the radio up. Love her voice and just the overall vibe and feel of their music!
The real genius of EBTG is that they can swoop effortlessly between genres with such skill that everything they try works and is successful - from their early indie art rock, through smooth jazz pop, onto dance and even drum & bass. An incredibly talented band.
I feel the same feelings when i listen their songs...
Voice of an angel x
Everyt time I listen to it I love it more, thanks EBTG!2023

[Verse 1]
Oh loverboy, to you I belong
Maybe one day you'll wake and you'll find me gone
But loverboy if you call me home
[Refrain]
I'll come driving
I'll come driving fast as wheels can turn

Oh loverboy, I know you too well
And all of my lonely secrets to you I tell
The highest of highs, the lowest of lows

I'll come driving
I'll come driving fast as wheels can turn
[Chorus]
Driving
I'll come driving
Fast as wheels can turn
Driving
I'll come driving

Stretching away as far as my eyes can see
Deserts and darkness, my hand on the wheel
Loverboy, please call me home
A girl can get lonely out here on the road
A girl can get lonely out here on the road
[Verse 3]
You see some days I find the old ways frighten me too easily
I leave my key and say "I'm too young"
But loverboy, if you call me home
Oh loverboy, if you call me home
Oh loverboy, if you call me home
[Refrain]

Cambridge Ma 1993 ...FM 96.9 and Scullers Jazz Club ... Amazing now as well as then..
Classy at it's best!..So smooth..nothing like it..Her voice is so strong and pleasant all at the same time..
I was born in 1995 and this is the first time I have ever heard this song. Am I the only one who feels a little sad when listening to this beautiful piece of music? I have read the lyrics and if we compare this song to others, this is not as depressing as other songs I have heard in the past but the way she sings it and the mix of jazz with other sounds create a rhythm that makes you feel sad, even if the song itself isn't that depressing and pessimistic really
You are loved Maria💛💚💜
It is a beautiful sad feeling ..
This is smoother than a silk kimono
Smoother than chittlins covered in hot sauce. Yum
The fine line between alternative music and MOR pop...love when artists go this way. Elegantly produced music...Tommy LiPuma
It's 2019 and I'm still watching/listening.
I love her voice so much. Such an underrated group.
great opening track to a great album. As smooth as Sade ... :-)
Always reminds me of watching a beautiful young woman waiting for her lover on a cold morning in Battery Park in 1995. A city now by another name..
I've been looking for this song for years...
(couldn't tell who the vocalist was...But it would come on the radio a lot when I was a kid. I didn't know whether it was Sade or Annie Lenox.) Now that I found it... I can sleep..Thnx UA-cam
Downing copious amounts of EBTG while sheltering in place because of Covid 19...thank you for being a gentle friend to visit.
When I was driving through Gainesville FL working for a blood centre I would wait for this song to play... Love the song
I can recall the first time I heard them: getting ready for work, 80s..after work- bolted to the record store and purchased Eden vinyl....will listen to them throughout eternity....also really helps when you are a dual national: born UK.
Thanks Everything but the girl for having accompanied all my adolescence and for having cheered my youth! I love you! Who's listening in 2021? I'm from Italy
i love you guys soo much, since i was a child... tracey's voice was one of the first things i fall in love with, love from Argentina.
Bringing on 80's/90's nostalgia vibes big time 😊

EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL - THE BEST OF EBTG
Everything but the Girl are an English musical duo formed in Kingston upon Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer, songwriter, composer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, producer and singer Ben Watt. The group's early works have been categorized as sophisti-pop with jazz influences before undergoing an electronic turn following the worldwide success of the 1994 hit single "Missing". The duo have achieved four top 10 and 12 top 40 singles in the UK and have received eight gold and two platinum album BPI certifications in the UK as well as one gold album RIAA certification in the US. Their cover of "I Don't Want to Talk About It" reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart in 1988, a feat later matched by "Missing", which charted high in several countries and reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1995 and spent over seven months on the UK Singles Chart thanks to a popular remix by Todd Terry which led to a Brit Award nomination for Best British Single. Their ninth album Walking Wounded (1996) set a new career best by entering the UK albums chart at No. four, and spawned the top 10 singles "Walking Wounded" and "Wrong". The band went inactive in 2000, with Thorn declaring that she would no longer perform live. Thorn and Watt, who did not publicise their romantic relationship while active, married in 2009, both released solo albums and said it was unlikely Everything but the Girl would be active again. However, in November 2022, Thorn announced an album had been recorded for release in the second quarter of 2023. Fuse, the band's first new material in 24 years, was released on 21 April 2023. The discography of Everything but the Girl consists of eleven studio albums, eight compilation albums, five extended plays, thirty-one singles, and one video album. The band formed in Hull during 1982, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, and singer Ben Watt. ♥️💯‼️And I have the great honor of having in my discography eight CD-albums by Everything But The Girl (or EBTG). Because I have three duplicate CD-albums and the other two CD-albums are just one copy of each. So, I have in my discography AMPLIFIED HEART (1994) two copies of this CD-Album. I also have two copies of the CD-Album WALKING WOUNDED (1996). I still have a single copy of the CD-Album, which is a greatest hits, THE BEST OF EBTG (1996). Also a single unit, also on CD-Album, from TEMPERAMENTAL (1999). And, finally, the most recent record work, released on April 21st of this year, the CD-Album, FUSE. Also two copies. Altogether there are eight CD-albums by Everything But The Girl as I mentioned at the beginning of this comment. Honestly, I've loved this duo since I heard the radio version of "I Don't Want To Talk About It". And, in the mid-nineties, when Todd Terry remixed "Missing", it was a huge commercial success worldwide. On their latest studio album, FUSE (2023), the British duo is to be congratulated for the excellent work. It took them a long time to come back, but the new CD-Album was worth the wait. It's very well done. I love the ten songs! It's worth having an album, in my case, in CD format! I know all the previous works of the EBTG. But after "Missing" and AMPLIFIED HEART, Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn became huge international stars! I simply adore them! ♥️💯‼️The Best of Everything but the Girl is a compilation album by English musical duo Everything but the Girl, released in 1996. Track listing: 1. "Missing" (Todd Terry Remix) from Amplified Heart, 2. "Driving" (Todd Terry Remix) Previously unreleased mix, 3. "Old Friends" from Worldwide, 4. "One Place" from Worldwide. 5.
