I just bought the m3 and I have a 13 pro max and I haven’t used it a lot yet but with a variable nd and a case it balances nice and works good! Excited to get use to it and figure out all the buttons and what not. I appreciate all your videos and keep up the good work!!

@@byshotmedia i just sold it and i didn’t use it as much as i thought i would but as long as you balance it really good you should have no problems. The touch screen on mine came unglued and started to separate from the handle, i never used it and never dropped it so not sure whats up with that. Hopefully its just mine and not a known problem.

@@byshotmedia I never used the app, I just used the gimbal as a standalone gimbal. The app to me was just garbage and inconsistent and I’d rather just make my life easier and strictly just use the gimbal by itself.

Simon, you are a life saver! That ZY Play hack was just what I needed to calibrate (manually adjusting the tilt) my Smooth 5 without having to connect to a computer. Thank you.
Nice video Simon! I got the Smooth 5 for use with my Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, and was considering the M2 or M3, but after watching this I'm still pleased with my decision. I also purchased Filmic Pro the day after Zhiyun announced integration with the Smooth 5, and I think Zhiyun /Filmic have done the Android integration really well. I'd also like to add that it was your reviews that really turned me on to Filmic.
It is possible to capture at 4K@60fps on Android now?
@@4340leo Mmm, probably not. Manufacturers disable some resolution /frame rate combinations to ensure phones will record successfully. Filmic Pro however has settings (Filmic Labs option) to override the limits, so you can at least experiment to see if your phone is powerful enough to handle it.

To improve speed of set up on the crane M3, I got a large camera backpack with lots of padding and when finished filming i just lock the axis in place and keep it like this instead of folding up to the compact size. When next filming, jam the phone in and you only need the most minor of adjustments to be ready to shoot.
I really wish the M2, M3, and other “pro” gimbals were supported by Filmic Pro.
Absolutely what we filmmakers are waiting for. Plus we need full support with our extra accessories

I just bought a smooth 5. One big problem is that the mode/power lights are VERY dim. You can see the lights indoors but outside there is no way you can see if the gimbal is powered or what mode you are in! This is mentioned at the end of this video.
as far as microphones go that shouldn't be an issue using the smooth 5, it has a 1/4 20 thread on the arm, you can get a mic adapter that screws on and there's also adapters that screw on to the the bottom of the handle. So no need to attach an external mic on the gimbal motor.

Really great in depth review of those gimbals I also love the look of the M3 but 100% agree the smooth 5 is so easy to use and so quick to set up. As a newbie filmmaker I really don’t need any extra things to think about, I want to concentrate on the composition etc and just crack on with it. The smooth 5 certainly lets you do that. I am only just starting out on this adventure. I recently bought the Smooth 5. Still , when time allows having a play with it.
I really love it, so far. A lot to learn. One immediate thing I noticed which is a bit annoying and potentially worrying is the clamp. It's great that it is so strong but it does deform my phone case. To the point that it starts popping out. The shape of the clamp jaw is a bit odd.
It is very useful! But I still like to confirm that M2s cannot hold iPhone 15 pro max with the cage and anamorphic lens plus 67mm’s ND adepter, and I should buy M3s, am I right? Do you have any other recommendations except M3s? Thank you so much!
Was wondering how come no s22+ or ultra video & what's going on with moment did they stop making phone cases for their lens??
I'm on the brink of getting a Crane M3, mainly due to the fact that I also have a DJI Action 3 camera, and the Crane can mount this and use it. The Smooth won't - it only works with smartphones, unless I've misunderstood things. The other gimbal I've looked at is the DJI OM6, but again, this won't mount an action camera - not even their own Action 3. Well, you can clamp it in the smartphone holder, but it obscures most of the front touchscreen, and it's a bit of an insecure workaround. So the M3 looks to be the one. That way I'll be able to use both my iPhone 14 Pro Max and my Action 3. Don't know yet how fiddly that changeover would be, though...
I haven't got round to including action cams in my tutorials (or experience), however you can also look at gimbals like the Moza Mini-P www.gudsen.com/moza-mini-p
I love your work man. While I will never "record" at 24/25 fps myself, you have shown me how very capable today's camera phones can be. Do please keep in mind, there is No film in your digital camera, No footage involved, Nobody is filming anything anymore. It's all just 'Digitally Recorded Video' on a timeline. Cheers 🍻

For a beginner like me, the most important part is balancing the camera on the gimbal. I've watched many videos on the M2 S and only a couple have shown balancing. And they were not very detailed. Has anyone seen a detailed video that shows how to properly balance a camera on this gimbal?

You literally read my mind,and I love your videos by the way awesome and inspiring filming including silent eye ,I do have a question I purchased the zhiyun M2s and am wondering about the universal smallrig the reasoning being I am just coming to digital and while I can edit years of being a harline film purist I believe it would be beneficial with a thread adapter for multiple lenses filter manufacturers and configurations as to eliminate (as much as humanly possible) editing for artistic integrity not quality btw do you believe this would be compatible,god bless you and your loved ones and your work
Brilliant review Simon, so you didn't have any issues while filming with all the lenses and filters using Zhiyun Smooth 5? No vibrations or lose os power in the motors in quick movements? Did you have to add your coins kit for balancing?
I've never had any issues with the Smooth 5, except with a moving timelapse (I just discovered)

@@SiHorrocks Dear Mr Horrocks, I am going to buy a new smartphone with my birthday money, there is one issue that I have with my android smartphone is when I am recording a video at 60fps, sometimes the video frame rate drops to 30fps and this is in bright sunshine at 1pm, it only lasts for around 2 seconds but can you please tell me if iPhones also do this.
Great detail video. I have the same gimbal. Can you please do a video to shoot video vertically and balancing the gimbal with S22 ULTRA. as I found gimbal doesn't hold cell phone vertically and portrait mode doesn't help much.

Thanks for your review. I don't think the Smooth 5 is for professional use. I can't use it with a professional top light. That alone makes the gimbal more of a toy than a tool of work. I can't add a shotgun or a wireless mic receiver such as Picogear.
I can't even use it with the Freewell Sherpa case with their new fish eye lens or macro lens at it would exceed the maximum recommended weight for the Smooth 5.
Iphone 14 Pro 206 grams Freewell iPhone 14 Pro case 62 grams Freewell Sherpa fish eye lens 243 grams Freewell Sherpa macro lens 184 grams maximum recommended weight for Zhiyun Smooth 5s 400 grams. The numbers don't add up.
FYI, M3 also uses double /single click cycling through modes

Hi Simon. I am very new to Gimbal and I haven't own any of them yet. I am thinking of getting one, i love the DJI OM5 design but unfortunately I read lots of issues about compatibility issues on S22 Ultra (since i am using one with case also), so is there any best of the best recommendation for me? WARNING : Crane M3S only provides stabilization for smartphones & action cameras. Button controls are not supported. I linked my iPhone13 pro max with Crane M3S and issues were :
1. Struggles to connect via Bluetooth. Nightmare.
2. OBJECT TRACKING IS NOT POSSIBLE FROM ZY PLAY APP WITH PHONES.
3. It’s only for Mirrorless/ types cameras.
I have not seen a single crane m2s exclusive balance video with Sony ZV-1 like camera. Could you pls do one?
Hi there, could use some help, I am looking to get a gimbal that will need to work well with both Canon M50 and iPhone 14 Pro, but am wondering about how I will be able to use a mic with the iPhone...does any gimbal model support a cage or have a shotgun mount anywhere on it? Or does any of them leave the usb-C port open so I could use a Rode VideoMic Me-L for iPhone?
Thank you for the great content but could you please stop balancing your gimbals the way you do? First have them locked in the same position as when the gimbal is running (of course the gimbal is off at this time). Then unlock each axis at a time and balance it for the action of that axis. Finally, turn on your gimbal and run an autocalibration. Simple and easy! Btw bought the crane m3 with your help so thanks again for the videos... Hopefully my explanation can help my old man a bit 😉
I like the idea of getting the Rode GO 2 wireless mic but, ouch that's a hefty price! More than I paid for the Smooth 5.
I don't understand why rigged up something so big and heavy from something that is small.
Im considering the M3 just because I am entertaining using a Smallrig cage. But for all of the gimbals, do you convert the footage for the anamorphic lens in post to have the proper desqueezed video dimensions? Or is there a way to view the footage while filming in the proper aspect ratio?
only way is to use a 3rd party app which allows you to desqueeze the video in the app while filming
I cant seem to get the Crane 3 to balance probably even after trying for days and also it keeps constantly locked screen on and off every few seconds. Bluetooth doesn't seem to work even though it finds it on my smartphone. Too much hassled with the crane m3 unfortunally I wonder if perhaps Smooth 5 would be way easier without having to balance every parts of the gimbal.. Apart from does the Smooth 5 needs to be calibrated ? ((Crane m3 seems far too much confusing to balance every parts and never seems to be balance it correctly. I am using a android Samsung S23 Ultra phone)) I think i gave up using the crane m3 and might return it as much as i like it because it has a small screen.. Might try out the Smooth 5 but i sure wouldn't want to have the same unbalance issue with the smooth 5 unless there's only 1 part where you balance and the rest is automatic done ? So smooth 5 is almost set up automatically for me or do i have to do exactly the very same thing as to Crane m3 ? Before i used the smooth 4 which seems easy set up but had minor issues with it since i used it a lot over time.

I specifically want to make videos only in vertical for ig Reels. Balancing was brutal so I made a counter weight that hangs behind & low the gimbal.

Do you mean that you want to use your phone mounted on the M3 or just use the phone to connect the app and to do motion Timelapse? The iPhone 14 Pro Max can balance well on M3, but can not be connected and control via app. Hope this would help~

Hi Simon. I’m just getting into videography and photography with a smartphone. Coming from a background of film and medium format(where costs are now prohibitive), I though to myself, ‘why not give the camera that’s always in my pocket a go?’. Smartphone cost aside, I’m amazed at the quality of film and stills available for so little cost. So, galaxy s22 ultra in hand, here I go. I have a question though, if you wouldn’t mind answering (if you know even). I’m considering a zhiyun m3 and a beast grip pro (for filter, lens mounting). Would you happen to know if one can successfully be mounted to the other? I don’t mind adding balance weights if called for.
the M3 can handle the weight, it's just the balance part is tricky. The more weight you put at one end of the device the more likely it will be a problem. Apart from that, I'm not sure you would be able to mount such a big cage like the universal Beastgrip one (because of the size, not the weight). I use Moment thin case plus filter mount with my Samsung Note20 Ultra plus lenses when using with a gimbal

QQ: what Samsung are you using for the filmic pro? I see that you have a 4K60 option and you're not in lab mode. I'm using a S22 Ultra and I can only get that option if I turn on Lab.

@@Davey89 Do you use a gimbal at all David? I’ll admit I’m struggling to find useable solutions for my s22 ultra in what appears to be an ‘Apple’ centric world combined with my limited knowledge. I downloaded Filmic Pro for its hardware support only to find limitations. Using the native app won’t allow gimbal use as far as I can see.

It's a shame they don't have functionality parity across the entire line of gimbals. Now I'm more convinced that Smooth 5 should replace my DJI OM4. I thought it would be the crane M3, but it seems like it could be frustratingly inconvenient.
I don't understand if Filmic Pro needs to support specific gimbals like the M3, or if Zhiyun needs to build in support in their firmware for Filmic Pro.

The Crane gimbals are more aimed at being used with regular cameras, with the option to use a smartphone. Which apparently means they can't have app support for filming via a smartphone. I know nothing about app design so I couldn't say why that is
@@SiHorrocks right on. Summer weather has really kicked in so it's time to venture out with a solid gimbal that can support all the frigging Moment gear.
Regarding app design, apple's camera API is very much open and available so controlling a shutter on their hardware shouldn't be a problem. It's clearly a choice to not focus (groan) on mobile phone app controls.
I own a Samsung Note 20 Ultra phone, and I took the zhiyun smooth 5s device, but it did not work with it because of its inability to connect to Bluetooth. I tried several times and the phone did not see it. Does anyone have an explanation or solution for the matter?
Hi~ you may try to quick press FN button 5 times to reset the Bluetooth. Set phone to End User instead of Developer Option.Hope this would help~

Simon I have the M3, the battery indicator never reaches full as far as it just continues flashing as if it’s charging and also the arm into the base seems to have some small movement, does yours have any of these traits? I have contacted ZH and they have requested a video from me showing the movement, they haven’t responded to the battery charging.

The systems are just wrong. The phone clamp arm needs to be longer and the motor at that end needs to be stronger and the main sliding adjustment arm clearly needs to either weigh more or be another 8 centimeters long. A gimbal is supposed to balance using weights. So if they want to remove the weight type, then the angles have to be increased from the pivot point outward. Somehow these wonder kids making these don't understand leverage. This could all be solved with very simple fixes but somehow they refuse to adapt and just make a good gimbal.

I haven't experienced that with my iPhone 12 Pro Max, it's always very stable with frame rates

You said you don’t worry about a mic on your Smooth 5 but gimbal arm is blocking the mic port on the IPhone. I must be missing something.
I don't worry because I use the Rode GO 2 transmitter as a standalone recorder. I record onto the transmitter than sync the audio with the video in Premiere. So I don't need to connect the mic to the smartphone

@@SiHorrocks syncing audio sounds challenging.
@@BeersInJapan not too difficult. In Premiere there's an auto sync so it takes 30 seconds per clip. Otherwise you can add a clap at the beginning of each clip and match the clap. Takes a bit longer, but I find filming is faster because using the GO 2 is very easy (as a standalone) - so in all its about the same time

Isn’t DJI 5 the obvious choice when compared to smooth 5?
It snaps in so fast and you’re good to go. It seems like Smooth 5 takes a very long time to get it ready.
DJI 5 lots of reviews saying it really doesnt work well with Pro Max phones.
