I bought a 1987 John Deere 1050 2wd tractor and a John Deere 509 heavy duty/commercial duty 4" cutting capacity tractor and rotary cutter. I love it! The 1050 is great because it is turbo charged quiet, simple and reliable.
Me too1 I do this as Oregon Field and Brush Mowing. I have been eyeing this kind of setup and your video just confirms what I hoped for... this combo is AWESOME! I can hardly wait for your other Bush Hogging videos!
I've got anywhere from 12.5 - 15 acres to cut with this tractor and Bush Hog very soon. It will be the most toughest cutting job I've ever had to do. I'll be making good money though, so hopefully everything goes smooth! I plan on making a video too. The conditions will be VERY thick and difficult to get thru! The majority of it will be over the tractor. Probably 3 days or more worth of cutting.. We'll get to see what the Massey Ferguson 231 and Bush Hog 285 is REALLY made of!!... Can't wait!!
@Foggy677 It has never gave me a problem. Purchased it with 480 hours on the meter. Tractor now has 1,167 hours and counting. Matter of fact, I've had it for 7 or 8 years and it's never gave me ANY problem. I do keep the maintenance up on it regular though. But I've never had to put a penny in it. I did change the alternator/fan belt 1 time cause the old one broke. I also had a few flat tires but that was my fault. Been the best tractor I've ever owned and I highly recommend Massey Ferguson!
@brian93ist I used a Howse rotary cutter back in 2002. I didn't care for it. I owned a 5' King Kutter rotary cutter about 5 years ago and it was ok, for the money.... I don't know if you've ever used or owned a Bush Hog brand rotary cutter, but Bush Hog is the absolute Best you can buy. I have owned several in the past.
I like the bush hoggin. your 231 tractor is very very much like the 261 that i have over on my channel. isn't it great to run down a big bush or tree and the tractor doesn't even grunt!!!!
Yeas it is great! I LOVE a a Massey Ferguson. Just bought a new Bush Hog BH15 cutter because the 285 was just a little harder on my tractor than what I like. Not by much though! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the BH10 series rotary cutters from Bush Hog. Thanks for the comment!!
+231MasseyFerguson The BushWhacker 6 foot cutter is very very heavy. you sure know it on the back of my tractor. So, I understand your comment. I got a great deal on mine when i purchased it, and it had held up great. I have cut some monster stuff with it.
@rgdoiron Thanks for watching! I have a passion for re-claiming land....I've seen your "bush hogging a tree" video several times... LOL... I used a flail mower about 6 years ago on the back of a Ford 6610 when I used to work for a municipality. I liked it, but using a "Bush Hog" on the back is my favorite thing to do with a tractor!
@brian93ist My favorite tractor so far is the Massey Ferguson 231. Mine has 940 hrs. I owned a bigger tractor in the past, a '97 Mahindra 485 DI, and loved that beast. Wish I never sold it! I owned a couple Yanmar tractors also (YM2000, YM2500)... But I do love my Massey the best! My favorite John Deere tractor is the 1050... Massey Ferguson and Mahindra are the only 2 tractor brands that I would buy. The ONLY rotary cutter brand I would buy is the Bush Hog brand... It can't be beat.
Nice video! I love to bush hog as well. Picked up an old flail mower and now I use both. There's something about reclaiming the land from chaos...see my video "Bush hogging a tree"
That Perkins 3 cylinder sure sounds good 👍🏻

Thanks! Yes, the cutter and tractor are a great combination. This 5' model Bush Hog is all the 231 wants though... It's really heavy!

And I forgot to mention the Bush Hog 285 is for sale. Pretty much mint condition!

The slip clutch is not slipping on the cutter! It caused the tractor to completely die 3 times while doing this job!
