Co-sign. I could not beleive the idiotic reactions people were having in video. Street was full of Darwin awards about to happen. Black bears only come around people if they are ill, or some how desensitized, it's not normal behavior. This was an extremely dangerous situation. One swipe of that bears claw and your guts would be spilled out. They can go through sheet metal on a car door. Worked at a nature center where we once briefly had a small black bear, very young, they used a very thick rug like a shield to go into his cage for cleaning etc, and even that little one would hit with a force you would not beleive. An adult black bear could easily kill a soft squishy person.
I wish people would understand that bears have feelings. Look enjoy and don't act ignorant. I was raised here, it just bothers me when something bad happens the bear gets put down because of idiots.
I think bear also get unfairly put down over peoples fear, i mean last year we had a bear wonder into Chattanooga, which is a two and half hour drive from Gatlinburg, not that far from the Smoky Mountains, everyone was keeping their distance, no one was doing anything stupid like feeding and harassing it, and what did the authorities do, shot it dead, for what? such a despicable gross overreaction.
Still no Bear resistant garbage containers at the The Village Shops. Brilliant! When someone get's mauled, maybe they'll rethink their position on open garbage containers. This has been a problem at The Village Shops for years with this exact tagged and collared bear. Love to see them, but not like this.
The bear was wearing a tracking collar. This is not the bear has had a run in with the wildlife department. I followed one around like this until the Park service showed up. I didn’t think that the bear would actually bother anyone unless a kid came running around a corner and surprised the bear. I had a 10mm with plenty of ammo just in case, but I never had a cause to “bear arms” that day. Sorry for the pun. Okay, no I’m not 😁 but anyway brother Bruin was taken away and released as far as I know.

Park rangers & scientists tag animals for tracking purposes. They watch where they travel, how far they stray from area found, and many other things too numerous to write. This may be a young bear, and got confused or has been around humans before. Like any wildlife curious they are of all the smells, sounds & things going on. But safety first, never approach a wild animal, dont chase or try to get a photo op, its not wise. Bears are timid creatures, more afraid of humans then we of it. Its so unfair to them to destroy their habitat and kill them off. Let them be, they leave you alone, dont force confrontations.
