As a fisherman, im very happy (for both yours and the fishes sake) that you didn't catch one lol. If you'd have hooked anything, it would've ripped that piece of wood straight from your hand and spent the rest of its life being stalked by it. River fish in the UK are incredibly strong & tough fighters and the current would've made it impossible without proper tackle! I would recommend you learning for the next one, its incredibly fun and incredibly rewarding! Tip: in order to know when it's biting the bait, you'll need to buy a float. It basically sinks under water as the bait is dragged. When it disappears, you know to strike. Keep up the good videos, all the best!
Float fishing on flowing rivers isn't as easy as that mate. Trotting with a stick float is quite a skill for a total beginner and he'd be more likely getting tangles of line that look like birds nests. Fishing with a quiver tip would likely be more successful, or better still, touch ledgering by holding the line between your thumb & finger because there have been so many times you won't see a bite on your quivertip because river fish are way more shy than they are in the over stocked and easy to catch carp fisheries where you can quite easily sack up with over 100lb catches of carp etc
MTE. I honestly like those "failed attempts" a lot more, because it shows that it takes a huge amount of preparation and experience to just go live off the land like that. Most channels won't show it, they just upload their stuff and be like "ohh, it's so easy, everybody can do it".
The challenge videos you do are, without exaggeration, some of the best content on this platform. Everybody I've shown your stuff to has been transfixed by your intriguing editing and novel ideas for adventures.
[SPOILER!] It is somehow incredibly entertaining to watch you wander around the wilderness. Even though you failed, I'm glad you decided to film it, narrate it, and post it!
It's important to be able to call it a day before it's too late, reminds me of a show about a man walking the Nile and one of his friends getting heat stroke and within 1hr went from fine to dead
What a tonic why am I still watching up until this point you’ve only managed to walk across Norway successfully but most importantly you’ve inspired me like someone else said the best thing on you tube please don’t stop.
Ahh, that might explain why after they failed to catch any fish and were walking back to the camp site i was thinking "things can only get betterrrr" 😆
This'd be a lot easier to do in Canada, in most places you can just head north for a few hours and you're in the middle of nowhere with nobody around for dozens of kilometers.
As a Canadian, these were my thoughts exactly. Lots of rivers that are bountiful with fish (if you know how to catch them) and food to forage if you know what you're looking for.
@@thozynator6094 In most of western and southern Europe good luck finding wild forest where no one cares what you do. In Northern or Eastern Europe there are still plenty of places.
Another Canadian here. The "woods" in the UK look so managed and civilized. I've camped in England and it was odd never really being away from populated areas, always close enough to walk to a shop etc. Reassuring in some ways but you never have that feeling of truly being in the middle of nowhere.
@@Lucysmom26 As a Canadian I would say bears could be a problem in most northern woodlands situations which would make it less than ideal. Wolves in some areas as well. Also overnight temperatures even in the summer can get fairly low when you are up north in the woods.

I've watched Ed Stafford do this many times and often thought it seems pretty easy. Thank you for reconfirming the idea that it is NOT as easy as it looks and I should stay at home! :-) Great content, enjoyed as always
Man this music, commentary, it always brings the feels, I get an automatic itch to rewatch How not to travel Europe again (after having it watched twice already this year)
When Tom said he was going to eat a worm I had uncomfortable thoughts about that guy who ate a slug for a dare. Obviously I knew he didn't come to harm but honestly it isn't worth it.
Fun fact: Crab apples and apples as we eat are not "True to seed" meaning they don't replicate from the same seeds they produce, so those crab apples that tasted good to you guys were actually like super rare to be tasting good! Avocados are the same way
@@neonwhitea.1548 I think Finland and Canada also have plenty of room. You could also do it in the us, but you’d probably have to go to a national park and get a permit to fish and camp (not sure how hard it is to get without a us citizenship).
You should do some sort of challenge in Ireland. Connemara is a perfect location for remote things like these. Many islands in the bay that are uninhabited, would make for great content imo.
Oooh, I could do with this being a new series. You're certainly not as experienced as some of the bushcraft youtubers, but the inexperience and your amazing storytelling makes this good fun
This made me realize how fortunate I am to live in America and in western NC mountains. Forest, rivers, creeks, everywhere. I’d feel suffocated living where these guy live. It’s beautiful if you can see past the Get Out signs hanging on every tree.
Yes! I already have a weakness for fishing/survival videos, seeing it done by the best "storytelling" UA-camr is even better! Thank you for improving my Sunday evening :)
There's places like The New Forest but it's very heavily regulated and patrolled. People do wild camp and forage there but you have to really be in the know, to know where to go and how to do it. Part of the reason is obviously disrespectful people who don't know how to cohabit with nature, and would leave mess and cause damage or even fires. Another part of the reason is the Earls and Dukes who own a lot of the land of England see it as theirs... Saying it like that seems ridiculous in 2021 but it is true one Earl owns a lion's share of the green spaces of England. Wish it was like Scotland or Norway.
Tiny country with a crap tonne of people, its been like this for a long time and only going to get worse. Any "forest" we have is actually a small wood lol.

10 minutes in and its amazing what a different place this is than Canada, where I live. You call this the "woods", but everywhere you go is not only private property, but well beaten trails, vehicle tracks, built up bridges, and cultivated land. In Ontario, you can pick pretty much any direction and you're in the WOODS. You can get lost, you can encounter bears, moose, wolves, and other animals, you will not find trails, cultivated land, etc. Its true bush survival. But I support your attempt at what you have available lol.
You should do this in sweden as the land there is open for everyone, even peoples private farms are open as long as you dont do damage or steal crops. Allemansrätten is what it’s called. Also sweden have amazing possibilities with berries and plants together with norway!

the lower parts of rural Scotland like around Loch lubnaig/ lomond and Callander/ Stirling’s are really lush and full of good forest. So many raspberries around those parts, and salmon.
There was a guy in my village who died after eating what he believed to be wild garlic. He picked one, rubbed the leaves between his fingers, and correctly determined that it was wild garlic due to the garlic smell on his fingers. He did the same test each time as he continued to pick plants, but he failed to realise that the garlic smell on his fingers was not from each new plant, but from the _first wild garlic that he picked._ In the end he had picked about 2 wild garlics, and about 5 *lily of the valleys* - a highly toxic plant which looks almost identical to wild garlic. This is a fun video, but don't let it give you ideas about foraging. Frankly, it isn't worth the risk if it's just a hobby.
It's healthier than seating around all day in a office job and getting smashed on the weekends as a hobby. Stop discouraging people from outdoor activities.
@@Peasant_of_Pontus Nobody claims that as a hobby, you just made it up. I discouraged people from foraging, not from outdoor activities. You made that up too. Clearly you are the one with too much time on their hands. Find a hobby or something.

Stay inside and stop scaremongering others who want to do something fun outdoors.
Quick tip for next time you gonna fish with worms, you need to penetrate the worm at least 3 or 4 times. Just divide it into 4 segments, and pierce each segment with the hook one by one. The bait stays better on the hook like this and the fish eats it more easily (it swallows it whole) Also in my experience, trouts like grasshoppers, just cath one in the field and put it on the hook
Love the vids :) If I can give u a tip on the fishing, use a long stick and tie the line in the end for more range and also, trout are quite skittish so the distance also helps in that matter. Especially love your geo detective episodes, I’m so impressed every time u nail one. Keep it up

As a fisherman, i must say you clearly immensly overestimate the size of fish they would get in that river.
Matt are you always fishing for Loch Ness monsters or so?

@@bloxorandrokko nah, a decent trout in s fast River fights above it's weight
Float fishing on flowing rivers isn't as easy as that mate. Trotting with a stick float is quite a skill for a total beginner and he'd be more likely getting tangles of line that look like birds nests.
Fishing with a quiver tip would likely be more successful, or better still, touch ledgering by holding the line between your thumb & finger because there have been so many times you won't see a bite on your quivertip because river fish are way more shy than they are in the over stocked and easy to catch carp fisheries where you can quite easily sack up with over 100lb catches of carp etc
It’s nice to see a genuine person being real and uploading this failed attempt because a lot of people would have just faked it
MTE. I honestly like those "failed attempts" a lot more, because it shows that it takes a huge amount of preparation and experience to just go live off the land like that. Most channels won't show it, they just upload their stuff and be like "ohh, it's so easy, everybody can do it".
the descriptive words you choose to use in your narration make me smile. Excited for your second attempt, in a new environment.
You know it's genuine when almost all challenges are failed. Another great video.
The challenge videos you do are, without exaggeration, some of the best content on this platform. Everybody I've shown your stuff to has been transfixed by your intriguing editing and novel ideas for adventures.

As a canadian too, it's just so weird to see people actually having a hard time finding a forest lol

Kinda unbelievable that it's this hard to find a simple forest in england
And its probably private property in some stupid way or another.

Pink gills are one of the ways we're taught to distinguish between agaricus and amanita mushrooms where I live. But I wouldn't try one myself without having it identified by an expert - the risks of getting that wrong are just not worth it.

But I support your attempt at what you have available lol.
haha well england is over 100 times as densely populated as canada
Trout are very smart. And they are quick. They can tell if bait is fake and will spit it out immediately. It takes practice to have good enough timing
You should do this in sweden as the land there is open for everyone, even peoples private farms are open as long as you dont do damage or steal crops. Allemansrätten is what it’s called. Also sweden have amazing possibilities with berries and plants together with norway!

Watch out for meteors, falling airplanes, volcanic eruptions and nuclear weapons while you're at it

This is a wonderful collision of two of my favorite hobbies / channels!
There was a guy in my village who died after eating what he believed to be wild garlic. He picked one, rubbed the leaves between his fingers, and correctly determined that it was wild garlic due to the garlic smell on his fingers. He did the same test each time as he continued to pick plants, but he failed to realise that the garlic smell on his fingers was not from each new plant, but from the _first wild garlic that he picked._
In the end he had picked about 2 wild garlics, and about 5 *lily of the valleys* - a highly toxic plant which looks almost identical to wild garlic. This is a fun video, but don't let it give you ideas about foraging. Frankly, it isn't worth the risk if it's just a hobby.
It's healthier than seating around all day in a office job and getting smashed on the weekends as a hobby. Stop discouraging people from outdoor activities.
The fist rule of foraging is don't eat anything unless you're 100% sure, if you stick to this then there should be no risk
@@Peasant_of_Pontus Nobody claims that as a hobby, you just made it up. I discouraged people from foraging, not from outdoor activities. You made that up too. Clearly you are the one with too much time on their hands. Find a hobby or something.

@@notgaryoldman1178 Almost anything you do has some risk of death. You're overly cautious if you think forgaging is a particularly dangerous hobby when you're properly educated. Stay inside and stop scaremongering others who want to do something fun outdoors.
you never went back the following year! surely this needs a reboot. loved it!
Quick tip for next time you gonna fish with worms, you need to penetrate the worm at least 3 or 4 times. Just divide it into 4 segments, and pierce each segment with the hook one by one. The bait stays better on the hook like this and the fish eats it more easily (it swallows it whole)
Also in my experience, trouts like grasshoppers, just cath one in the field and put it on the hook
Love the vids :) If I can give u a tip on the fishing, use a long stick and tie the line in the end for more range and also, trout are quite skittish so the distance also helps in that matter. Especially love your geo detective episodes, I’m so impressed every time u nail one. Keep it up
