I just wanted to say thank you so much for reading my daughters letter , she is currently watching the upload for the 8th time jumping up and down with happy tears in her eyes you just made her whole month .
Your daughters letter got me good. My girl was raised around cars and shops with me being a mechanic for 30+ years. The memories flooded in when Sarah read the letter. Now with her being 17 , going to school and working full time to fund her own project car I think I created a monster! But! I created a good one I think. Her first project of her own choosing is a 73 Dodge Charger R/T. Proud Daddy!
Hey Sarah! I think you are suppose to open the inspection hole plug, then fill from the bottom drain plug, replaced the inspection hole plug, then remove caulking gun nozzle and replace drain plug. That is how it is done with marine gear lube. It basically creates a vacuum to hold the liquid in. Good Luck!
I know this happened ages ago, but in case others can use this info: first, have the inspection hole open when you fill, then before you take the gun away, put plug back in the inspection hole. This will slow the drip when you try and get drain plug back in. Secondly, put the tube of oil in the fridge overnight, this will greatly thicken the oil, making it hardly drip at all. Finally, make sure the car, or at least the metal of the casing, is as cold as possible which will keep the metal from heating up the oil you fridged overnight. I’ve never done this job, but I’ve done similar jobs as a steamfitter in my job. Loving your channel so far, find it delightfully subversive.
I dont know if anyone already comment this, but for my TT I put the refill tube in the fridge the nite before and the liquid becomes thick so a little is wasted in the refiil.
@Walter K Bauer If you actually would have paid attention during the video, she explains why she used the bottom hole instead of the top one, she also said that the top hole would have been the most logical to use
I love to see those jack stands under the quick-jack; thank you I can now watch comfortably! Where is Sarah ST ??? Remember, we don't "fail" we were just a bit unprepared! Also Sarah, I would write on the back of those lic. plates the name of the gift giver and the date received as well. Years from now it will be enjoyable to look back and reflect on the times you had and what was going on during that period in your life. I know, it seems insignificant now, but when you spot it (name and date) years from now, you'll really enjoy it. (do it on all your gifts from tubers!)
Hi Sarah. I love your videos! Next time you have to replace your haldex filter, maybe loosen the inspection plug a little and pump you new oil in the drainage hole until oil comes out from the inspection plug. Therefore you would of pushed all the air out and when no air bubbles come out of the inspection plug, tighten the inspection plug. Because of vacuum you have created by tightening up the inspection plug, no oil should leak out the drainage hole when you take the caulking gun out. Then you can put the drain plug in and tighten it.
Hi Sarah! It's Josh from the Quick Speed Shop Channel. I'm glad you like the shirts and plates. It tried to send you some plates from states you didn't have on your wall and one from NY where I live. I look forward to every video. Thanks for the shout out and hope you like the shirts!
what you do is remove the bottom plug, then take out upper plug to drain it....then you fill from the bottom hole, till fluid comes out of top plug. then leave the oil tip in bottom hole...now put top plug in, get bottom plug ready to be put in, have plug in you hand near drain hole. quickly pull tip out and insert plug.... then recheck fluid level, every engine oil change and all fluid levels in the vehicle... Great work Sara....jeff
Don't worry about your mistakes. That and your charming prestation style are the reasons I follow your channel. You always convey the reality of diy. Keep up your outstanding work.
Oh the infamous haldex unit. These TT videos take me back to my early years and getting into cars. Spent roughly 14k on upgrades, mods, and overall service and that’s with being a DIY guy. Couldn’t imagine the labor cost for everything I did. At least I sold mine to an Audi Forum member, who never drove or saw the car in person. (It was kind of a big deal...) great TT videos. Keep them coming and don’t forget to change that timing belt and get the metal water pump vs the plastic impeller version which is most likely what’s inside yours.
I'm guessing >90% of youtubers would have edited out the haldex fluid fuck up, we appreciate the honesty. I watched the last couple of videos with my daughter, her concentration isn't great yet but I think it's awesone for her to see a girl working on cars - so thank you from us both.
Hi Sarah, I am an aircraft mechanic and don't know anything about automotive maintenance. I subscribed to your channel because I just enjoy looking at you. Thanks for your very entertaining and informative videos. - Tom Finelli, Ottumwa, Iowa.
Sarah, glad you kept the messy Haldex servicing in your video. It is how the service is prescribed to be performed, so you followed it. You are always genuine and give an accurate portrayal of your experience wrenching on your vehicles. If you encounter a difficulty, you include it and tell us how it really is going. Appreciate the honesty. I know you inject your humor and personality, and appreciate that too, but you do not skim over a difficultly or road block for the purpose of what makes the best presentation on UA-cam. Again, genuine, and you are awesome for it.
Hi Sarah from Scotland I love your videos , I have had an MR2 like yours and now have that Mk1 TT 225 and a Boxster S My dad was a 40 yr car mechanic who welded and paint sprayed / crash repairs He had me driving at 9 You are very skilled , interesting, funny and stunningly gorgeous especially in denim shorts Keep fixing so thoroughly, you’re addictive to watch Lots of love Iain
@2:54, so jealous of that porta-cool in the background. A smart and effective investment if you plan to spend hours in the garage between April & October.
Loved where you were in the opening scene (wish I was there). Anyone who works on cars and says they never made a mess is lying. That's why we had the cheap kitty litter around. You ended as beautifully as you began. GO ABBY!!
Sarah....Your channel is a God-send. I've got my eyes on a 2001 TT Cabriolet. Everything you're doing to Tee-Ter is going into my "Things to do" list. Thank you for going through all this stuff in so much detail.....that...and you're personality and innuendos are quite fun too. Awesome channel.
Beautiful intro! (And the scenery and the sunset weren't so bad either! 😉) "The filter sits sideways... Like... Well, that's kind of suggestive!" @ 4:37. Sooooo funny! 😂😜🤣
I feel your pain, I had a 2004 VW R32 that had the same BS Haldex filling method. I did, however, have a special Haldex filter wrench that was all one piece made by VW/Audi that worked great!
I changed out the side markers on my 2016 civic awhile back and one of the regular amber bulbs that came with it burnt out recently. I decided to swap them for LEDs because they look cool, last forever, and use less energy. When I did this I thought it looked great and started thinking about swapping all the lights in the car for LEDs. Until I looked at the side markers at night for the first time and realized they were so bright it actually hurt to look at them. Then some time after that I pulled up to a red light and the driver in the car next to me was shielding her eyes from my LED side markers. I immediately went home and put normal bulbs in them again. This turned me off the idea of swapping for LEDs, but I did swap the interior, trunk, and reverse lights for LEDs, which I think are useful
Also installing the fill plug before you switch to the drain plug replacement will slow down the leak Luckily servicing the Haldex won't occur very often!
Hey Sarah the way you fill an out board lower unit is similar but you remove the inspection filler then fill from the bottom before removing the bottom you put the view level plug back in that causes a vacuum so it won’t come back out. Sorry I missed the vid so a late comment hopfully it works that was love the channel great job on the vids and the puns
Cool to see people still doing stuff with the first gen TT. I've just knocked the cobwebs off of my 01 TT, had to replace the integrated throwout/clutch slave. Hope you never have to do that. Anyway, the Haldex service seems like a PITA the first time, but after the second or third time you do it, you'll be able to do it in the dark without spilling more than a drip or two. I have my plug ready on the hex driver, pull the fill tube and quickly plug the drain with my thumb so I can get the caulk gun out of the way, then quickly swap my thumb for the plug like Indiana Jones stealing an idol in The Lost Arc. Piece of cake.
Reminder whenever you change a filter reminder especially an oil filter make sure you get the old o ring out. It's not uncommon to have double O ring leak. Especially if you take your car to one of those spiffy quickie oil change cheap places with Elmer Fudd working on it.
Your theory is correct on the filling. Once you have some oil in there from the bottom there should be no problem in filling the rest through the inspection hole. I did this on mine without issue. Also there is an overflow hose (if it is still there) from the Haldex that goes out to the left side skirt area so don't freak out if it starts leaking along that side for a couple days after filling it. Could also be the right side? My Audi TT PTSD is still hiding some of the memories. At the end I had a stethoscope and a 1000 page workshop manual, it ran perfectly. And that's when I decided to sell it. I still miss driving it tho.
Just an idea for the future. It would be a challenge, but if you can put the inspection hole plug back in before pulling the caulking gun away, it may create a vacuum, and prevent so much fluid from flowing out before you get the drain plug back in.
Squeeze the haldex fluid into a syringe(buy separate). Open the inspection hole. Add a flex tube with filler hole adaptor to the syringe. Attach filler adaptor to filler port and squeeze syringe until the fluid runs out the inspection hole. Close the inspection hole.
hi sarah for future reference never remove the upper plug on that model of haldex it has nothing to do with the oil level its for assembly only. oil and filter renewal as follows change the filter-remove bottom drain plug and drain oil the next bit is tricky as you discovered first off find a long enough extention bar and close fitting socket to fit inside the oil cartridge to use as a plunger - remove the spout from the oil cartridge and using the drain plug thread width as a gauge trim the spout a little thinner than the plug and screw the spout into the drain hole-put the new grain plug on the end of a good fitting allen wrench- now get comfortable under the car trim the top off the oil cartridge and screw it on to the spout put the socket and extention bar inside the cartridge and push the plunger all the way in- heres the tricky part unsrew the spout until it becomes loose enough to pull out but keep the spout in the hole -if your right handed pick the new drain plug up by the allen wrench with your right hand and position it next to the spout now calmly pull the spout out and let it fall away while putting the new plug in place in one movement and rotate the plug anticlockwise until you feel the thead click then screw the plug in clockwise and tighten. a vw guru showed me how to do that. just out of curiosity if you heard anything fall when you removed the upper plug it was a check vavle ball bearing if so the unit should be removed and fully disassembed to retrieve the ball bearing. ps love the videos
Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but I just fixed this issue of rapid flashing on my 05 F-150 turn signals after I installed LED bulbs up front. I still have the incandescent bulbs at the rear but I bought a turn signal flasher that works with both at the same time. Such a quick and easy fix of about 5 minutes.
hi sarah , if you pull the top plug and fill your tank full then put the top plug back in without removing the tube until the top plug is tight then when you pull the tube out of the bottom hole nothing will leak out !!!! Magic !!! lol
You fill the lower unit of a outboard boat motor the same way. You were very close the first time, all you needed to do is put in plug for the inspection hole (top plug) and tighten before you remove the filler from the bottom hole. That way it uses the vacuum to hold the oil in while you install the fill/drain plug (bottom plug).
Howdy, Sarah! Thanx for the video of servicing the TT's Haldex system (similar to my Volvo XC70). Looks like the engineers that designed the TT did not have to work on the car's Haldex AWD system. Cheers! Michigan Jeff
Hey Sarah , just a suggestion , if you put a rubber hose on the nozzle of the calk tube preferably one that will fit snuggle in the hole , you can lay down the calk gun and be able to use both hands to switch the dran plug . great video .
The last oil change I did I forgot the drain plug washer on my '06 Forester. Everything was going great the second time around until about halfway through the refill. I got a bit keen/wasn't paying attention and spilled oil all over my AC compressor and everything below! What a great smell :/
I’m so glad you’re doing this TT Build. It’s a great go to reference source. I’m considering buying a TT as a track/weekend car. So, this all helps so much! You’re awesome Sarah!
Put some flexible, clear tubing (ex. fish tank filter tubing) on the tip of the tube in the caulking gun, and squeeze the fluid in the "viewing" plug very slowly to prevent air bubbles. A few extra seconds saves alot of aggravation
For your own piece of mind, you are doing very well. You are also correct about working on the ground is far different from having a full lift. It is very difficult to not be attracted to you bring that you are smart, have a great body, are very capable, and the fact that you are very pretty. Your also fun and funny! I am an ASE Certified Mobile Mechanic, and would love to assist you in anyway.
One of the best things have used so far is fluid transfer pump from amazon for adding fluid when servicing diffs but this one is a little different. Keep up the Good Work!!
Another great video, Sarah. Changing fluids can sometimes be a very messy affair. Especially with the totally lame service procedure that Audi wants you to follow. Kudos to you for going by the book on that procedure. I really enjoyed your intro; on the outskirts of Tucson. I've not seen that part of AZ., but it looks really beautiful. Keep up the good work. Your projects are coming along nicely. I also like that fact that your fan base includes young girls that want to follow in your footsteps and that you acknowledge them.
chiefgecko I don't think you'd be able to pull a vacuum as there must be a vent somewhere. With the temp variations of the fluid and gears, you'd have leak problems due to expansion etc if it were a sealed unit.
Sarah, don't be embarrassed about that little bit of oil. I once started to fill the oil a freshly rebuilt 350 but forgot to install a new oil filter. The oil comes out as fast as it goes in. THAT was embarrassing!
Thanks for the unintentional teeny innuendo. :) You're a sweetheart. Lubing the O-ring on the filter is a pretty good tip, btw. I use the old oil on the new oil filter gasket so it'll be easier to remove it later.
There's a reason you're not supposed to fill through the inspection hole. You risk the possibility of knocking the nut loose that secures the inspection plug if you shove a tube in there and then you're royally screwed. There's an adequate amount of fluid in the tube to allow for a bit of loss.
Nice intro segment. It not only looks dramatic with a storm coming in but you get that unique atmosphere... makes me feel very alive being out in that weather. Always nice to see you doing it for yourself. You've developed really good practical aptitude. I would guess you're done a heap of this kind of stuff before.
No need to apologize. U didn't do anything wrong. That fluid change is a messy job. U done well for your first time. Awesome nature vids as well. U Go Gurl!
I've wanted to get one of those quickjack lift sets, but I've never trusted them...until I saw that you also added jack stands just in case. Well done...that is exactly the way I will do it as well. :)
I feel your pain. I've had to deal with similar things in the past, and making a mess never feels good. But it is the experience that counts. You are going to run out of room for license plates at this rate. Nice collection you have going.
I have had that experience before just to let u know next time you do change oil there cut nose to sit over the hole so when u take away u can put plug straight on
So Happy I found your channel and subcribed,i have a lot to watch to catch up, but I just wanted to say your an Awesome mechanic of course and such a perfect beautiful girl with a wonderful heart too xxx
Yeah, I've been there. I gave one of my cars a awesome engine flush...a full five quarts worth. I forgot to reinstall the oil drain plug. So, you can imagine what kind of mess that made.
Kevin Hahs,,, jk I feel you bro, my first real start bike I got in 2002 it was the 2003 Ninja 636, beautiful bike but first time I changed the super expensive synthetic oil that I bought a huge (I forget how big it was but about 7-8+? liters) I need my bike spiff have only taken 5-6'ish. After the drain and filled the filter up/installed I started pouring in the oil and got super focused on the other 1" clear window that shows the min/max fill gage... So I'm putting and pouring and I can see my nice fresh synth oil sliding down on the looking glass but it just kept taking it and I didn't notice there fill line starting to fill at all.... Anyway long story long the fill bottle for special synth oil strait on to my Dad's beloved side lawn... Three to this day I believe still a dead shot there..... Lol
Sarah , I want you to know that I love your channel and that I always like watching you being you're a woman, do such and amazing job on the mr2 and the tt . you've a great job on both. God bless you.
Filling the bottom drain hole is always a mess.. i prefer going through the inspection hole lol... on a more serious note, keep up the good work i really enjoy watching your videos
It's not a " inspection " hole -- It the refill port. You have a to use a piece often tubing connected to the oil cartridge to fill through. How can you fill from a drain hole??
Such a great vid! Only just discovered your channel. Where the hell have I bean!? Maybe I'll give my Haldex a crack after watching this. Keep up the great work. You got spoiled!!! jealous. looking forward to the next one. All the best.
Yeah I lost about 5 quarts of gear oil out the back of my t56 when putting the eng and trans into my 240sx. Didn’t know where the driveshaft goes was also what sealed the fluid into the trans 🤦♂️
Suggestion; next time you try this install a piece of flexible clear plastic tubing over the end of the caulk tube of the fluid after punching a hole in the end of the fluid tube. Then take the plug out of the inspection hole. Insert the flexible tubing in the inspection port and slowly pump the Haldex fluid into the unit from the top. That way you won’t introduce any air bubbles in the unit. When it’s full it will slowly ooze out and you can easily reinstall the inspection plug. You won’t waste any fluid. Neat huh?
A friend misscalculated the angle of the drainplug on an automatic gearbox he had up in the lift. And yes he got the stream right into the mouth so he know wht old ATF-fluid taste like. :D :p As a bonus. One of my friend's nicknames are Oil-spill as it is always dirty around him when he works with engines. And I have done similar things like you when draining motor oil. Also I got hit in the eye with gasoline quality E85 we have here in Sweden (85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) when changing the fuel filter on a 2004 Ford Focus. :p

Yes that First Generation Haldex filter is is a PIA I purchased the VW factory tool years ago. The fluid is another PIA.
Squeeze the haldex fluid into a syringe(buy separate). Open the inspection hole. Add a flex tube with filler hole adaptor to the syringe. Attach filler adaptor to filler port and squeeze syringe until the fluid runs out the inspection hole. Close the inspection hole.

Thanks for the scenery. All we have near us is Lake Michigan. For $8 they'll even let me swim! Planning my escape from Illinois.
I went to school in Prescott. I miss driving out to the middle of no where to watch the thunderstorms during monsoon season.
freezer thing sound like a good idea, plus use your finger or something cover the inspection hole after filled, it should slow the out pour
hi sarah , if you pull the top plug and fill your tank full then put the top plug back in without removing the tube until the top plug is tight then when you pull the tube out of the bottom hole nothing will leak out !!!! Magic !!! lol
you have to use a shunt resistor across the leds or not enough current will flow to slow the blinking
Your car thought bubbles keep reminding me of that show Blind Date! It's killing me, hahaha.
Most beautiful mechanic of our time!
I love her personality and her taste in cars. Keep up the show...
Two Sarah videos in one day! This one and your Mazda review. Thanks Sarah!
I also like that fact that your fan base includes young girls that want to follow in your footsteps and that you acknowledge them.
oh the photo bucket comment is so true, repowered my 986, Everytime I thought I found gold....nadda , Love the channel
You can prevent the fluid from rushing out the bottom if you can draw a vacuum from a vent or some other opening higher up.
Wonder if Audi mechs make up fitting for the level check plug with a hose barb and hook up something like a brake fluid vacuum to pull a vacuum?
I would think the same a effect would be achieved by simply plugging the vent while capping the drain.
chiefgecko I don't think you'd be able to pull a vacuum as there must be a vent somewhere.
I really enjoy watching your videos Sarah. They are funny, informative and genuine. Keep up the AWESOME work!!!
Thanks for the unintentional teeny innuendo. :) You're a sweetheart. Lubing the O-ring on the filter is a pretty good tip, btw. I use the old oil on the new oil filter gasket so it'll be easier to remove it later.
Man those Arizona skies... beautiful
*( My goodness. What a beautiful landscape of a state you live in. Gorgeous sunset. )*
Thanks Sarah - a project I will be tackling this spring.
Glad that you share your observations of nature with car stuff.
sarah
you did very good to fill thru the drain plug seems like the designers were drnking when they did it
That is some beautiful country out there! Thanks for the scenic views.
There's a reason you're not supposed to fill through the inspection hole. You risk the possibility of knocking the nut loose that secures the inspection plug if you shove a tube in there and then you're royally screwed. There's an adequate amount of fluid in the tube to allow for a bit of loss.
Great job and fully agree... never a mess only results from never any work done.
Keep up the good work Sarah, always love your attitude and sense of humor, greetings from Guatemala!!
Have a extension welded to that filter remover. So you never have to worry about stripping it. Get a impact extension from harbor freight. 👍👍👍
I have had that experience before just to let u know next time you do change oil there cut nose to sit over the hole so when u take away u can put plug straight on
hahaha your Spanish is not that bad reading those labels in products... great job with these videos. Thank you from Monterrey, MX
Heart of gold thanking everyone Sarah another belting video can’t wait for the exhaust video on the TT 😍
So Happy I found your channel and subcribed,i have a lot to watch to catch up, but I just wanted to say your an Awesome mechanic of course and such a perfect beautiful girl with a wonderful heart too xxx
Loving the channel. You’re part of my lunch routine. Forester Gump episode - installing a turbo blanket and header wrap please! Thx.
I can imagine the pain of filling the haldex unit from the drain plug hole. I did something similar with my 911 recently.
You are amazing. How you manage to do what you do is inspirational! Thank you for your channel. Never fails to put a smile on my face 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️
Wow a haldex? No idea I'm just a farmer in Texas rollin f250. You are quite amazing!
you catch it with your thumb and then put the plug on,if you push a black box out of the way there is another hole you can use 2 inches up
Abby is Sarah's lil' Tuner 😁💗😆
Useful tip, put the cartridge in freezer for half hour to thicken the oil.
Another great video! Love seeing the sights of the countryside in and around Tucson.
Such a great vid! Only just discovered your channel. Where the hell have I bean!? Maybe I'll give my Haldex a crack after watching this. Keep up the great work. You got spoiled!!! jealous. looking forward to the next one. All the best.
I love most of your videos and I also like that how impressively clean your garage is !
