      I got this 1 room that doesn’t have power to the lights in the room or hallway light. But the outlets are getting power.

    • @glasshalffull2930
      @glasshalffull2930 2 місяці тому +1

      @@Beall_ It’s not uncommon for the lights to be on one circuit and the receptacles be on another circuit. Try turning the circuit breaker off one at a time to see if any other lights or receptacles stop working. If they stop working, then you know that power is getting at least that far and then you could check those lights/receptacles (being sure breaker is off) to see if loose wires are the problem and everything downstream is not getting power.

    Electrician here. These are actually called Ground Fault Circuit Interruptor. The work by monitoring the output voltage of the outlet and compare it with the return voltage. If the return voltage is lower than the output voltage (Mostly because of a shorted circuit) they cut of the power before the board can fry.

    What if the outlet is supposed to have a GFCI outlet but does not? I think the GFCI tripped in my POS old house I bought and now my bathroom outlets don't work. In the breaker box there is the breaker box for the bathroom, the one with the little white button. Does that work like a regular breaker? I want my outlets back but I'm not sure how to proceed

    Some times gfis can trip other gfis down the line so check em all in the area even in other rooms sharing walls. In my old apartment we had an outlet in the bathroom that never worked until we found another outlet directly above it in the second floor bathroom under the sink with a tripped gfi..... Reset it and the outlet worked. Not even the maintenance people knew about it... Oh well at least it worked

    What if the gfci is old enough that when trying to see if it will fix the outlets that are out in the kitchen, the test button will not go in at all, and the reset goes in but does not click to show the reset but still has power to the gfci? *hypothetically* when this happened, I already checked the panel, tried resetting the breakers, even changed out the OG breaker for an updated one for safety and updated 2 outlets, Which was the symptom not the problem..

    That looks like a Square D style breaker, they have that center toggle trip position, also can have a red/orange flag in a window to indicate a short or overload. Then people get confused when it saps back to the middle. The tan colored Cutler Hammer breakers have no trip position, just Off or On. Is this better or worse? Not really just different.

      Because GFCIs trip at 5ma, at what current leakage do they trip in Germany ? Also in the new code most of the circuits are either protected by AFCI or GFCI, alot of people don't like em for nuisance tripping, but they do save lives

    • @mawer55555
      @mawer55555 Рік тому +2

      @@Hatim.13 thats quiet intresting as ive never expirienced or even heard of "nuisance tripping" however i belive here the standart is around 30mA for normal size home fuses.
      my appartment has a 230V 16A 30mA fuse
      (hager ADS916D) and the only times it tripped was when i had borken electronics connected or had oven, kettle and stove hooked up to it all at once (like 6KW total so just overcurrent)
      oh and ofc the one time i drilled into a wire that wasnt run accodring to german code 🤣(fairly old house)
      edit: just looked it up: in germany all ciruits not exeeding 16A that have a wall outlett HAVE TO HAVE a RCD with a maximum of 30mA leakage

    • @Hatim.13
      @Hatim.13 Рік тому +1

      @@mawer55555 Oh that's crazy, here we have the minimim main breaker is a 100A for apartment, and 200A for houses, 15A is the smallest breaker size and it is usually used only for small lights circuits!
      The new codes require almost every single circuit (including lights) to be protected by either a GFCI (RCD equivalent but with 5ma trip tolerance), or with AFCI (Arc fault detection) depends which circuits, this has significantly raised the cost of electrical panel upgrades, regular panel beeakers are like 5$ but gfci/afci breakers are like 40$ each, and combo breakers (that detect both afci and gfci) are like 80$ a pop, alot of Contractors and customers are annoyed with this.
      Also there is the problem that they included fridges, freezers and sump pumps (if your basement gets flooded during storms) in the GFCI protection requirements, and if you have an old appliance (like fridge or freezer) they seem to randomly trip the gfci, so if you re traveling you can comeback and find all your food rotten because the old freezer tripped the very sensitive 5ma gfci breaker/receptacle, or worse you comeback to a flooded basement and thousands upon thousands of dollars in damages because it rained heavily and the old pump motor tripped the gfci! Alot of homeowners install these protective devices to pass inspection then they replace them with regular receptacles/breakers, cause muricans would rather have an old appliance unprotected than buy a new appliance lol

      Also the pump part is quiet intresting and it dose make sens to go no GFCI on those I guess
      Also intresting that old cheap compressors can develop leakage didn't know that before

Some of the most hilarious calls are for simple crap like turning off power strips, power strips unplugged, tripped or plugged into themselves! Also, they’d hook up everything; monitor, keyboard, mouse, network and so on, but no power cords for monitor or computer AND they had no idea where they were.

      Good point. A GFCI protects everything downstream So if you have an outlet that's dead that's not GFCI keep looking you might have one tripped. It might even be someplace like the back porch or garage

      Don’t you love it that the GfCI for the master bathroom is sometimes in the garage 🤦‍♂️. I know it saves a few bucks, but seriously!!!
