Awesome dance sequence that's part of a movie chuck-full of fun stuff and worth the DVD Purchase!!
One of the earliest and funniest comments on this video...'Did they not have gravity back then?!!!' LOL
One of the latest comments is this one.
Those moves are absolutely insane!!
Slam Stewart lived in my hometown, Binghamton NY, so he would play at the local schools from time to time. It was so much fun.
That makes me jealous!
Just learned that he lived in my hometown (San Diego) in the 1960s!
I was just walking my dog and some dude on the street is like "get into this Slim Gaillard, I'm related to him," I was like yeah yah whatever, but then this dude floored me with some Motown history, and I came home and watched this. This is timeless.
Phenomenal dancers and musician I just sitting in awe and their energy and coordination.
Sure is Limelight material.
there was a period of time in the mid-late 1980s i used to bump into slim all over the place in london, just walking around, and got to know him on nodding terms, bless 'im! good memories and a great perfomer!
The brilliance of the performance overcomes the context it is presented in. I don't think any musician or dancer could watch this and not be impressed by the talent displayed here.
Slim Gaillard and Slam Stewart performed under the name of Slim and Slam and made some wonderful recordings. Have a listen to 'Palm Springs Jump' an absolute classic. Thanks for the lovely posting.
This is absolutely amazing! The music and the dancing is in perfect timing with one another.
I wish more people danced like this today. Long live Slim Gaillard.
Dancing choreographed by Frankie Manning (in the overalls) and danced by the following in order of appearance:
· William Downes & Frances "Mickey" Jones
· Billy Ricker & Norma Miller
· Al Mins & Willa Mae Ricker
· Frankie Manning & Ann Johnson
www.savoystyle.com has a lot more info about these dancers =D
Thanks for the information!
Trickeration - Nice to acknowledge these people. How did you learn of them?
Thanks for the info.
Frankie Manning was amazing.
Not taking away from the other Dancers, but I was drawn to his ability (in this clip) to move his dance partner around ..like she was a feather.
Its just incredible
With a name like The Harlem Congeroos, you know they got to be good! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Good gravy, that was fantastic.
TREMENDOUS ... MARVELOUS DANCE ROUTINE, ONE OF BEST OF ALL-TIME.
I'm overwhelmed with awesomeness after watching this video.
Sumadinkso Kolo :)
uff -1 za moju gramatiku
Pa ovo je genijalno!
Max Milian Nema veze, Slim&Slam do Milvokija OPAAA!:D
Of the thousands of videos I've seen on UA-cam, this is the one I keep coming back to, time after time.
Heck, if I made it a point to watch this every morning, I'd never need caffeine again!
une extraordinaire sequence de jazz et danse dans le chef d'oeuvre du non sens
Ran across Mr. Gaillard while reading on the family of Nona Gaye, this was truly a find for me. He was very talented and the creativity used in his style of playing and body language speaks volumes.... thank you so much for sharing. and yes the choreography was awesome !!!!!!!!!
BBC did a series of four programmes on Slim Gaillard quite a few years ago. At least one included Slim singing and playing with Nona Gaye and family.
The whole move is totally worth buying the DVD! Funny funny funny!
TOUT SIMPLEMENT FABULEUX....surtout pour cette époque...
Sweet baby Jesus the dancing looks so dangerous
Pure unadulterated talent
visto negli anni '40 e mai dimenticato: UNICO! suonare il piano con le nocche...
Break what?, the best dancers ever, was in the swing era, they we're amazing, and the music players uhfff....unbelievers.
They truly got EVERYTHING it takes!
You couldn't possibly learn how to perform like this even in a top Academy teaching Jazz Shows!
Looks like they invented all of this RIGHT ON THE SPOT, without ever rehearsing!
noisyfan from Germany
Great jamming & wow what a dance segment.
Look how young they all are! Early for Slam!
It is really amazing how fast things have changed in 100 years... that's why we always revisit styles. Enjoy your musical journey!
Makes me feel like wanna play jazz so much
What would America be without Black culture, particularly the MUSIC. Divine!
what would be America without piano, guitar, and freedom of speech, right?
Where would music around ther world be without the American Black culture? The Lord knew what he was doing when he was creating the America Salad.... "Just enough spice! " "Give it some zipppp!" "Just right!" "Delicious!"
2dasimmons 😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😬😱
This is totally crazy ! Super hot jazz !
That dancing at the end is some of the craziest dancing I've ever seen!!
Wow! Those are some complex dance movements, especially by the ladies...quite impressive.
Larry, Taiwan
Norma Miller (the cook) is still with us today at 97 years young. Still active today according to Wiki. All the best to you, lass!
Quel bonheur de revoir ces images.....Merci
Awesome this should have been the highlight of the film...Cant believe these moves watch the dvd over and over..
You're probably right -, here we have REAL LIFE on one hand, and VIRTUAL LIFE on the other, each one in his own right! And if the latter one pleases and excites us, it's areal work of art.
Incredible piece of American History, and even more incredible dancing!
And now, after seeing this all, I've got to gather my bones !
Swing Dancing, a great part of American history. I can't believe people used to do this... so cool!
There is nothin', and I mean nothin' like swing. This is AMAZING!!
Wow! The dancing was incredible.
my mom redid this whole dance in high school lol im going to find it and post it. Real music and real dancing!!
This was truly amazing! I see elements of current Dancehall in there! Just wow, so much energy! I can't believe that was 1941!
"... blacks brought... emotion and feeling into music. I love the blues and jazz." We commonly read about emotion in connection with blues and jazz but it's interesting to note that blues and jazz both arose roughly 1900 and lyrics about emotional subjects were already very popular with white and black songwriters in the late 19th century. "He's Coming To Us Dead" by black songwriter Gus Davis was typical of the time.
This is not simply dancing. It is defying gravity to music.
I threw my back out just watching this video.
I tore a hammy.
..perfect to start a nice day...whooopeyloney!!!
This is a treasure.
this is AMAZING. I see elements of from the swing dancing that are currently in Dancehall. Sooooo much energy! WOW

INCREDIBLE! I´VE JUST SEEN THIS MOVIE IN A CINEMA CALLED "FILMOTECA" HERE IN MADRID, AND IT WAS AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE! THANKS FOR POSTING THIS INCREDIBLE PIECE OF THE FILM.
Very true. Dancing is all about balance and a firm foot.
Slams phrasing is untouchable
I have owned this brilliant film for years, but didn't know this was Slim Gallard playing!
Thanks for the information.
great moment of fun/time speed ***** THANKS !
Saw this film tonight for the first time. Loved the whole movie, but this is by far the best sequence. Thanks :)

Good times, even with some loss...
That's some badass playing/dancing, Thanks for sharing!
Slim Gaillard is the guy on the piano and Slam Stewart is on the bass, known as "Slim & Slam."
Incredible
A must to watch all the way through. Ot there will be trouble.
WOW!amazing.
amazing........
Brilliant!
Wow! The music is awesome, but the dancing is out of this world! Seriously aggressive and energetic. Love it. Thank you for posting.
What a swing, brilliant
Marvellous!
One good things leading to another!
Thanks!
ouch...that last split!
Thanks for sharing - this is great.
Ongelofelijk gaaf!!!
Amazing!!! :D
This is mad !
It's impossible to dance this fast for more than a minute or two... remember this is a movie and there are many takes for this scene alone! Through the wonder of editing, this scene flows like one dance. Also they danced many more minutes extra for the parts they didn't use, or the parts they had to retake!!!
Definitely!
This is equal parts amazing and horrifying
Beauty.
@trailertrashrnr This May, I heard Norma Miller herself say that she was so excited to watch all the dancers the night before, because we've really gotten it. We're dancing the lindy hop, and making it exciting. And btw, she's one of the dancers in this clip.
There's more talent in this video than the whole godamned Grammys. Too bad Slam Stewart is a forgotten name, one of the alltime great bass players.
I don't care if you speed it up, slow it down I don't care if it's choreographed or was improvised. It is some fabulous dancing!!! Period. I wonder what folks' opinions would be if Fred and Ginger were doing It. Don't hate-Appreciate!
lol that was awesome
-niesamowite!
@inputmodule The whole movie is amazing. Non-stop antics and thoroughly entertaining!
this is good plese do more!
Doesn't get much better than that! Thanks for posting! :-)
