Saw Tyner in a room with less than 200 people at his "retirement" party. I was standing about five feet away and said, "what power and color in his playing". Then I saw his huge hands that could play things that other's could not.
Thanks for this. Ever since the very first time that I heard the first few strains of A Love Supreme, I've had this almost fawning, slavish devotion to McCoy Tyner. Over the years, I've listened and made noble but amateurish attempts to copy him ( that doesn't mean I'll stop trying :) ) with a limited measure of success. Seeing this compilation is inspiration and motivation to continue. Again, thank you
Great post. The degree of LH/RH independence is bananas. Something special about his brain. My favorite though is his accompaniment on "These Are a Few of My Favorite Things" with John Coltrane. It sounds at one point as though the man has 3 hands! I would love to see footage of that.
Glad you included Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit from his early 70's group with Mouzon , Booth & Azar Lawrence That group always brought some powerful music. Liked all your choices, but as one person already said, only seven really??
I got to hang out with McCoy a couple times , so patient the first time I was 19 he sat with my cousin and I talked and answered every stupid question , The trio with louis Nash, Avery Sharpe , .My 7 + utopia from Tender Moments Atlantis- Message from the nile -extensions Pictures - the Greeting Survival Blues - Extensions - Appointment in Ghana- One night with blue note preserved - Short story -Joe Henderson In n Out.
My personal all-time favorite is ua-cam.com/video/-b9LWJwBxH0/v-deo.html from 1:20 on to 23:00. Out of this compilation it's no. 5 (Inner Glimpse), but you have to watch the original and see how, shortly after Mr. Tyner, Mr. Freddy Hubbard blows his mind out. :-)
His left hand is nearly an Axe! the nice things is: He plays totally without an ego" Please listen to his version where he plays Have yu met Mis. JonesI guess 1991
There's one thing that McCoy Tyner wasn't. He wasn't subtle. He didn't leave anything to chance. When I saw him back in the late 1980s at the Vine Street Bar and Grill in Hollywood, California, it sounded like more than 1 instrument when he was playing.
Would anybody be so kind to tell me where the last piece (nr 7) is extracted from? The link isn't working and would love to hear more of that! In any case, thanks a lot for the upload !!
Seven times? Tyner spent the entirety of the 70s in Beast Mode
☝️ 🔥
You got that right!
i still think the supertrios version is the best. I don't think i've ever heard a more intense Moment's Notice than that.
He's a monster on the keys!!!
In the era when everyone else plugged in their pianos for more power, Tyner still had more power than anyone else in his fingers.
The greatest Pianist to ever live. RIP, Saud (McCoy Tyner).
most powerful jazz pianist in history
YES
In no order
McCoy Tyner
Bill evans
Ahmad Jamal
Beast mode #1 proves why he is the greatest jazz pianist that has ever lived.
Saw Tyner in a room with less than 200 people at his "retirement" party. I was standing about five feet away and said, "what power and color in his playing". Then I saw his huge hands that could play things that other's could not.
Go, McCoy, go! I've seen McCoy seven or eight times here in Santa Cruz at Kuumbwa and he ALWAYS plays like this. All night. Every time.
Thank you thank you for this fabulous post. Caught him always when he played Yoshi's Oakland. He took you on a musical journey like none another.
This is insanely good. I think I just had an eargasm.
His genius is Immortal!

According to the late, great Marion McClinton, McCoy Tyner once broke piano strings at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis
I believe it. I saw him at Gilly's in Dayton,OH in the early 80's, I could see the piano shaking as he played. He had a lot of energy to get out!
Wow such amazing energy...percussionistic and loaded with beautiful melody

McCoy what a genius
McCOY once played congas, hence the strong hands.I saw mccoy snap a piano string at Yoshi in Oakland in the 80s
The batterist at #7 🔥
McCoy took Beast Mode into a higher species of animal!
The eye of the Tyner
My favorite things with John coltrane live in the half note (1965)
The greatest, The Real McKoy,
All good picks but sorry, seven is far too small a number to pick for. Mccoy is ALWAYS in beast mode.
Glad you included Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit from his early 70's group with Mouzon , Booth & Azar Lawrence That group always brought some powerful music. Liked all your choices, but as one person already said, only seven really??
My top 6:
1. Resolution
2. Inner Urge
3.Blues on the Corner
4. Passion Dance
5. Contemplation
6. Four by Five
Number 4 is Giant Steps
Oh, ok. I got it. Sorry
Don't forget 'Makin' Out' and 'Atlantis'
Saw him in Boston's Jazz Workshop, with Azar Lawrence, Billy Hart, Franco and Calvin Hill was incredible.
That thumbnail is a badass!!
He went sicko mode
Philly Love to Mccoy Tyner........................
He plays Star Eyes beautifully

Espectacular !!
You should start a podcast!
That would be amazing!
When are you going to a Joey Calderazzo vid? He absolutely shreds on Nothing Personal in Europe.
Quartal voicing and soloing mode :)
lol yes mccoy was in perma beast mode
Giant steps is the most scary to me 😆
His left hand is nearly an Axe! the nice things is: He plays totally without an ego" Please listen to his version where he plays Have yu met Mis. JonesI guess 1991
i would like to know the #7 ...
7:11
Inner Glimpse? Birdlike?
Teach me please !!
It's Inner Glimpse.
Not fair to compare 7 sessions of seamless fluidity in the peak of the explosions, wow, now I am tired.
As it goes this great man came to piano very late,13 years old i believe.
DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ungodly!!!!
Ya know if he looked at the keys more often I'd be more convinced he wasn't an alien... Just sayin
The lick 6:02
God

It's probably "Hannibal" from the album "Looking Out" and the video is extracted from Montreal Jazz Festival 1982. But, I'm not really sure.
Please add the lineup of the band
link for #7?
And he is still touring....(maybe he has retired now)
you spelled beast wrong ;;;;; it's B E S T
