That's Edwards AFB smack dab in the middle of the Mojave desert. I think I got to witness the shuttle landing one day when I was at home alone and it sounded like a bomb went off on my garage. And that was from about 30 miles off the base. Incredible.

The full glass cockpit was actually one of the last major upgrades to the Shuttle in the very late 90s to early 00s. I think most commercial aircraft already had the technology finely tuned before the changes to the Shuttle which was rocking the CRT monitors since the beginning, brand new for the 70's but by the 90s it was clearly outdated.
